Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

The basic info is in the opening post at the top of the thread. We always encourage new people to read the "Welcome, Read this first" thread (which we keep bumping to the top of the list.)

So, yes, I can see that this thread does go off on tangents and variations, but hopefully not so much that confuses new devotees.

Eagle Grin @ your NSV! My DH supportive but frustratingly seems to only have to think 'oo I need to lose a couple of lbs' to lose 1/2 a stoneConfused whilst I diligently work at at it to lose my few lbs AngryGrin He is 6' 2 though & I'm 5'4ish.
No loss for me this week, perhaps it's muscle since I've started exercising & nothing to do with the extended w/es Wine Wink (hopeful)Hmm
Welcome newbies & good luck! Would hate to think the thread was at all intimidating/over complex, lots of good info & supportSmile

Morning team!
I can't decide whether to make today a FD, or do tomorrow. My last FD was Monday. I'd planned to do it today - DD1 (3yo) is at preschool so I've only got DD1 (8m) to contend with...but I've got a visit from my mother too!
So I'm sitting here having only had a glass of water and a peppermint and liquorice tea, wondering what to do.

Today...tomorrow...today...tomorrow...

zedzedzed · 12/03/2014 08:32

5to2waaa I know what you mean, it could totally look that way if you haven't read the older threads or OP first. I thought I'd strayed onto some sort of Pro Ana thread with people boasting about not having eaten for days and other people egging them on! Blush

I'm not sure what can be done though to change an appearance of something to newbies that isn't actually the case, the OP has everything newbies need and if they're brave enough to de-lurk they don't ever seem to be given complicated/prescriptive advice; just eat your tdee sensibly x5 days and do 2x 500cal fasts.

And if, like me, they finally read the OP carefully, all will be clear.

I find the support here invaluable and I'm really grateful for it. If people want to go low carb/no-alcohol/no-sugar/additive-free/vegan and get support here then that's their beeswax and has nothing to do with 5:2 but everything to do with making pro-active and healthy choices that make this woe work for each individual.

I kinda skim over the parts that I've nothing to contribute to (like the current porridge negotiations...I'm Scottish, if I never eat porridge again, deviant or clean, I will still have ingested a lifetime's worth by the age of 10 and l'd rather have cheese any day...also, Bovril tastes like bum and miso like seaside waste).

But if we only stick to 5:2 chat we'd have to give up chocolate-coated guinea pigs too, and that is unthinkable.

NFD here, seem to be eating my TDEE daily now...bit odd when I was 3-600 under previously, not sure what's going on, bit worried as it means I'll have no weekend leeway.

Happy fasting Wednesday Starvers...drink up, stay busy, walk it off; you can have it tomorrow.

zedzedzed · 12/03/2014 08:36

hellie tomorrow, there are more Thursday fasters then so more chat to get you through till dinner o'clock. Also, visits from MILs usually require biscuits/cake/tequila!

zedzedzed · 12/03/2014 08:42

Ooops...not your MIL, but ditto visits from your mother!

CiderwithBuda · 12/03/2014 09:24

Morning all.

Lovely sunny day here in Somerset. About to clean the kitchen and then go for a walk. I have a appointment at the chiropractor so will walk there and back the long way round. Then am gardening in the afternoon according to DH! We have two guys in clearing a few large and very overgrown beds. So we have a huge pile of garden waste to move to a compost area.

SV for me! 5lbs off since I started two and a half weeks ago. Am now 15st 7. Was 15 12 when I started 5:2 and 16 3 at beginning of Jan. Lost the first 5lbs low carbing.

5to2waaa - I think it's important that people realise that actually 5:2 doesn't work for a lot of people and the reason for that is that people just hear "eat 500 cals for two days and EAT WHAT YOU LIKE THE REST OF THE TIME" - but that isn't actually true. You do need to be aware the rest of the time - eating to or under TDEE. Understanding what that is. Understanding that eating healthy, unprocessed food is as important as fasting for two days. I tried 5:2 ages ago and gave up quickly as it was making me food obsessed on NFDs. And that was because I only heard the eat what you like message and was eating crap. So yes it can be seen to be prescriptive as that is how those who have found it worked really well for have done it. I'm finding the snippets of info very useful.

5to2waaaa · 12/03/2014 09:24

What you say makes sense, and I like zedzed's idea of skipping what isn't relevant to you (but I'm an avid reader and find that hard!).

I do think the threads have changed a lot from a while back, but it's probably a logical progression as peeps get further into the WOE and want to fine tune it/learn more.

I hope my post didn't offend anyone, it wasn't meant to.
I shall go back to lurking now as the threads move too fast for me to post!
Happy fasting everyone.

CiderwithBuda · 12/03/2014 09:26

Hellie - I'm fasting tomorrow. Out for dinner tonight to Zizzi's so am aiming on not eating much today if possible in preparation and then a proper fast tomorrow.

Helliecopter · 12/03/2014 09:26

zed YES! Ditto applies to mother and MiL...however I did manage FD on Monday with both inlaws here all day (they come every monday) and they're doing 5:2 as well! It wasn't their FD but they know what I'm doing at least.

Decision made. I'll fast tomorrow pass me the tequila

Out of curiosity, how many of us skip breakfast on NFDs? What's the first thing you usually have, lunch? Or a late morning snack?

Helliecopter · 12/03/2014 09:28

Oh don't lurk 5to2waaaa now you've starting posting just join in Grin

If I can't check the thread for a few hours, sometimes I read back and sometimes I don't but I always manage to catch up somehow and get back into the swing of it. (She says, having only been posting for a week or so!!)

Helliecopter · 12/03/2014 09:31

cider Mmm Zizzi's! Enjoy. Huge congrats on your SV! Well done. I also had a SV today...7lbs off since starting. Woo!

diabolo · 12/03/2014 09:40

Morning all. FD for me here, lovely 4 mile dog walk completed already in the morning sunshine. Grass mowing and some plants to put in will follow when the garden has dried out a bit.

Had my worst NFD yesterday, was in a foul PMT mood, some twatty poster on another thread really pissed me off, I ate far more than my TDEE and had wine. Why are some people so utterly ghastly? All they seem to want to do is upset others and criticise their choices, often without having any personal knowledge or experience of what they are criticising. I think this is probably the only thread where I have never encountered such bitchiness.

I am in a much better frame of mind today so...... Planning an omelette with mushrooms, spring onion and a little ham. Naice ham of course.

Grin
womblesofwestminster · 12/03/2014 10:18

like the current porridge negotiations

Nice one Grin I made it into your rant.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/03/2014 10:22

Morning all. Lovely NFD yesterday, didn't even try to count cals (the smoked mackerel lunch was followed by roast beef with all the usual - though I did have more veg/less pots and yorkies). Doubt I'll count today either as it's sausage and mash tonight - I'll do some roasted veg to have with that and try to put lots of that on my plate before the mash. That will be followed by apple crumble and custard- DD's request for example proper English food. No worries, I can not eat tomorrow Wink.

5to2 - hopefully people will read enough to realise that we're all different and finding what works for you is what matters - there's people doing all sorts of different things. Sometimes when there's info like the milk/ovarian cancer thing (which I'd not come across before) you do need to read the links which suggests that if there's a risk it's associated with high milk intake. 'Moderation in all things' covers many bases. Smile

EagleRay · 12/03/2014 10:30

Quick hello from me - FD yesterday and weighed myself this morning - have GAINED a kilo since weekend!! How on earth did that happen? Am mid-cycle so can't blame hormones. Feeling despondent and worried my shit metabolism has kicked back. Time to look at TDEE I think...

womblesofwestminster · 12/03/2014 10:31

Guys, I've got 2 new Pinterest pins I'd like to draw your attention to:

  1. Fruity water recipe:

www.pinterest.com/pin/308496643197344487/

Perfect for the weather getting all nice. Perfect for FDs.

  1. "Which life are you designing?"

www.pinterest.com/pin/308496643197235087/

A few weeks back a few folk commented that the bulk of my pins featured young models, so to counter that, check out this bad boy. :)

ErrolTheDragon · 12/03/2014 11:09

Nice boards... the second one is a good reminder of one of my motivations - I was 38 when I had DD, I want to be in better shape when/if she has kids than my own DM and MIL (similar ages) were. I'm more interested in being able to swim when I'm 80 than what sort of swimsuit I can wear this summer IYSWIM. So, healthy WOE - 5:2 with more nutritious foods, plus exercise.

Chocupid · 12/03/2014 11:18

Thanks Eagle for the miso soup Tip.
And don't be dispondent over your gain, I'm sure it will dissapear as quick as it arrived, if you don't let it send you off on a 'oh sod it I'll eat then' mindset.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2014 11:25

Wombles Great posters. The difference in those 2 women of similar age is stunning.
I noticed as my late mother went into her 70s, 80s, 90s how differently her friends aged / survived - quite a bit determined by longterm lifestyle choices.

Hi All I am starting Monday because I am flying a lot tomorrow around the place! Argentina has got to be the easiest place to not eat in the entire world...despite what people say the food is pretty shocking ! Absolutely no carbs ...all grilled BUT they eat bits of cows that I dissected at medical school! I read the inspirational blog and WOW you have all done so well and so healthily. A great WOL ! My father and elderly neighbours have been doing porridge and soup two days a week for 50 years and they are in great shape and still Scottish country dancing !
Eagleray I had giardiasis in brazil once too....I was never more delighted and thought it make me "perd les poids" sadly like you I felt sick and made some pretty anti-social odours until I eventually threw the treatment down my throat ! Apparently the lab in London thought they were up the amazon looking at my cultures ...nice to have made their day !,
Clearly being 5'5 is a non optimal height in your forties ....or maybe we try harder because there are more of us ! So adios Argentina for now and hello Europe . My Monday is going to be jasmine pearls, pint of water and every exotic green tea on the block followed by a Waitrose red wine and onion burger with salad late in the day and some soup before bed plus a deliciously early night !
My new simple Monday ...no cafés or restaurants and absolutely no entertaining other than sky+ and a workout !

zedzedzed · 12/03/2014 11:57

Oy! womble! No ranty, only pleasantness and porridge complacency due to cultural heritage!

Don't go lurking again 5to2 tell us what you're up to health/weight/fast-wise when you pop in.

Love the 2nd lady on your pinterest btw wombles and she looks just like my lovely granny, (who sadly died of a heart attack before she was 80, but who was very active and healthy and glam).
I'll definitely aim for the 2nd picture with you...at least we've made a great start here.

Hope all you wednesday fasters have realised there're only 7hrs till dinner now! Have some water, do the hoovering, walk round the block and think about what you'll nosh tomorrow.

Not2bObvious · 12/03/2014 12:30

Zedzed only 5.5 hours to my dinner! You must have read my mind, I was just having a slug of water and thinking I come this far, I'll probably only have 2-3 more struggle points, the bit where you're like "I can't take it" - cue tea/water or if it's 2pm, bovril/salty bum time ( I wish you hadn't put that pic in my mindGrin)
Thanks Almost, as long as the label says 12 then I'm a 12 who only frequents stores where 12 fits

womblesofwestminster · 12/03/2014 13:46

What a beautiful day here in Newcastle! :)

Who's fasting?

PrimalLass · 12/03/2014 14:05

Afternoon all Grin

I have missed quite a bit the last few days, but am happily still going, and on week 4. Still 6lbs down, which is a miracle after my weekend (pizza, curry, wine). Today is day 1 of TOTM and I am actually 1lb lighter than yesterday rather than heavier Shock Yesterday was a NFD so I am even more in shock as I usually gain 1lb back after one of those.

FD today. Lots of coffee, a cup of chicken stock, and can't wait until my usual FD dinner of piri piri chicken, asparagus and salad.
