Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

I'm cold, tired and have that icky taste in my mouth. Gotta love fasting.

EagleRay · 11/03/2014 17:51

Dakota - I'm at home with a stricken-scarlet fever DD too! Well, it's not confirmed but she has some of the symptoms and so the docs are treating her for it while we await the test results. Fasting has been fairly easy today as too busy with sick/crying baby to eat!

Today is FD no 7, so just into week 4 of this WOE and already 3kg down. This has been long enough, and enough weight lost for me to conclude that it's WORKING, where everything else has failed! A couple of people have said that they can see weight has gone from my face already - a lovely NSV as I've been horrified at the change in my face as I've gained weight. Oh and at the weekend my trousers fell down and my arse poked out the top - I guess that's another NSV albeit not a pretty one.

Anyone else got a slightly less than supportive DP? He kind of means well, but is horribly competitive and is trying to lose a bit of weight himself (he's a cycling fanatic who wants to be able to go faster uphill). I think he's pleased at me losing weight, but also gets a bit annoyed in a weird competitive way Confused It probably doesn't help that I work out with a personal trainer who is half his age Grin

beanandspud · 11/03/2014 18:02

Nearly at the end of two consecutive FDs and I'm just about coping Confused.

Had miso soup around 1pm and have had a couple of sticks of celery with scrape of v. light cream cheese to keep me going until DS goes to bed. Then it's soup and an early night!

Miffytastic · 11/03/2014 18:24

Thanks for the food suggestions.. I probably should have gone for nuts in the first place not a banana. I'm veggie so the lean meat isn't an option.
I find even plain almonds in their skins moreish, I think the christmas nuts had a big part to play in my recent weight gain!

Wombles - yes I do feel colder on FDs certainly. I find curling up with a hot water bottle is comforting in the evenings. I'm away for work and the hotel where I'm staying seems to have crappy heating so I'm under a blanket!

Managed the meeting thankfully :)

DakotaFanny · 11/03/2014 18:34

eagle hope your daughter gets better quickly.

Managed the fast. In fact have 200 calories left for tonight......mmmmm, what to have??

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2014 18:49

Bat That's such an important NSV: you can have an occasional portion of cookies and then stop. Brilliant !

Eagle Big (({hugs})) to you and your DD. Scarlet fever is horrible; hope she soon recovers.
btw: I love your NSV of trousers falling down !
Maybe your DP will have a similar NSV ?
Grin
Boleh
Sorry, I misunderstood your post & didn't know your history.
If you are losing 1lb per week, sounds like you have found the correct system for your bod.

If you want to ramp up fat-burning, your karate is a start, but add a couple of specifically HIIT sessions to your week: spin, skipping, interval sprints, circuit training, Crossfit etc

Or boxing or TaeKwondo instead of karate

Wombles
Some Lean women bodybuilders / lifters have reported problems with ADF or with 16:8, but they were sub-15%, far below anything anyone on this thread is aiming for.
%fat ranges for athletes and others are Here

Try Berries / Manuka honey / treacle / molasses as healthy options to sweeten your porridge.

Sugar and Splenda are both crap. Personally, if I must have sweeten something, I would choose the near-zero-cal crap like choosing diet Coke over full sugar coke. However, try to minimise this.

Helliecopter · 11/03/2014 19:05

Haven't made my TDEE cals go very far today, it would seem, not sure why. Maybe it's a post FD hunger or my brain playing tricks, so as soon as DD2 is asleep I'm looking forward to dinner (pasta with salmon, creme fraiche and lots of salad). But I'm more hungry today than I was on yesterday's FD. Odd!

Boleh think how amazing those strawberries will taste when you do eventually get to have them again! Bet there's some delicious food out there, I'd totally gain a stone or three I'm sure!

MazzleDazzle · 11/03/2014 19:06

On the subject of shop sizing: I bought two size 12 tops from Marks & Spencer! Haven't bought a twelve since my youth! And they're roomy.

Meanwhile, 2 pairs of work trousers I bought yonks ago from H&M in a size 16, finally fit me. They fit like a second skin though and really they're more like a very small 14. Jump from the mantelpiece jobs.

A confidence booster nonetheless though. Also ditched a huge bag of fat, frumpy clothes.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2014 21:46

Milk Concerns
Cow's milk has quite a lot of carbs, sufficient to be banned on most low carb diets.
OK, we aren't low-carbing, but add this to a bowl of oats and the total GI load is enough to cause problems for some.

My real concern: several papers linking high consumption to ovarian cancer , e.g. Lancet , Sweden

Some papers disagree, but I prefer the taste and low carb of almond and coconut milks anyway.

My favourite 2min Deviant Porridge

  • 40g flax-meal (or mix with oat bran)
  • Pour on boiling water and stir until thick.
-Add 15g of 90% cocoa Lindt choc
  • a heaped teasp peanut butter
  • and 1/2 teasp cinammon
  • Stir until all melted
  • Add a little more boiling water plus almond milk
  • Optionally blackberries

No sugary nasties, low GI, very filling, yum !

fasting 2 days running is beyond my capabilities - well done you

bigchoc
see I love a big glass of milk occasionally
I'm just not a cereal person

Chocupid · 11/03/2014 22:10

Tried the bovril for the first time yesterday's FD and it got me through a hungry moment in the afternoon, which helped it become a successful FD yippee!!
feeling more in control now thank god!

It helped but I wasn't to keen on the taste...
So want to try miso soup and similar to have more lifesavers up my sleeve for the tricky moments, but where will I find it in the supermarket pls anyone?

Not2bObvious · 11/03/2014 22:13

La la la, fingers in ears on M&S vanity sizing, had been v happy to fit in their size 12 skinny jeansSad Oh well, are river Island and oasis guilty of the same - cause I think that might tip me over the edgeConfused
Nfd drawing to a slightly sticky sucky sweet end - just a few apple drops and a few starburst
FD tomorrow as off out on Thursday - this will be my 4th fast til evening, I get through them ok but kinda dread the thoughts of it now, part of me wants to said sod it do a 16:8 mini fast, I'll see how the morning pans out. Any Wednesday fasters?

Buzi · 11/03/2014 22:13

Hello ! I weigh 70kgs and am 5'5 so I have a stone or more to lose ! Sadly had gained weight after 5 yrs of tamoxifen and the menopause at 37 ...lucky old me...to make myself feel better I jacked in my job and followed myDH around the world eating, drinking and feeling sorry for myself ! We'll just caught the side view of a real fatty who looks like my gran did in the mirror of a design hotel in South America ! Ye gnaws it is me and worse still the handsome fella standing next to me looks 5 yrs younger...the DH! I have tried many WOE life plans and failed...I did start the 5:2 in Jan and lost 5llbs in two weeks so I know it works...I just feel doomed ! Psyching myself up for Monday and new WOE can anyone give me some inspiration !

CiderwithBuda · 11/03/2014 22:20

BigChoc - that 'porridge' sounds lovely. Must give it a go. When you say 'flax meal' do you mean milled flax seeds?

I got to th end of my FD. Dinner was some pork stroganoff with peas. Small portion but I'm not sure of calorie count.

TalkinPeace · 11/03/2014 22:31

Buzi
you can do it.
Eatriskier and I are both 5'5 as well
think of this as the holistic start to the rest of your life, not just about a few kilos

Eatriskier · 11/03/2014 22:42

buki try the inspiration thread linked in op. Like tip says this is a whole new way of life. Even my dh has been suckered in and we can't see it any other way. Dh hasn't been eating fantastically on his Fd and last night I went out of my way to cook him a meal (couscous stuffed peppers and lemon tagine chicken with salad). Biggest plate of food he's had for ages let alone on fd. Once you get in the swing it is easy.

And if it makes you feel better I started at around 95kg. I'm 6st lighter now (haven't done that in kg sorry).

Eatriskier · 11/03/2014 22:42

buzi Blush Shock Shock sorry for the name failure

EagleRay · 11/03/2014 22:43

Chocupid I buy my miso from a health food shop but reckon you would find it in the 'world foods' section of a supermarket? I get through a sachet of the stuff on each FD but use half a sachet at a time so two mugfuls of soup for the price/calories of one!

Welcome Buzi - I'm the same height as you and 70kg is my first target, if that makes you feel any better! Are you still travelling in S America now? I guess the cheapness of food out there may make it harder to resist temptation. I spent 6 months in S America a few years ago and had giardia for 2 months - was quite ill with it, but didn't lose a single lb in weight Hmm can only think my metabolism was determined to hold onto the weight at all costs... Are you able to cook for yourself as you're travelling or are you eating out all the time?

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2014 22:46

Cider Yes, I get organic from Holland & Barrett - they have a super-healthy one with cocoa & berries, masses of antioxidants.
Any health food shop will have flaxmeal, also maybe Waitrose.

Welcome, Buzi. Lots of us folk here have lost successfully and the 5:2 threads are very friendly.

Why not jump straight in and join the Thursday fasters ?
That would give you time tomorrow to plan & shop your FD food.

MelanieCheeks · 11/03/2014 23:08

I buy the wakame brand of miso soup- comes in a small red box, in tesco and sainsbo beside the sushi rice, fancy soy sauces etc.

hopefulgum · 11/03/2014 23:15

I haven't been able to read the whole thread properly, I have skimmed through and had a look at that article, Mazzle. It seems to me that there is a mountain of anecdotal evidence right here on this thread that 5:2 works. I can see there is a bigger deficit when you do AD fasting, but it stands to reason that 5:2 will work, particularly if you keep an eye on tdee on NFD.

I haven't lost weight rapidly, but I believe that's because I am not strict with tdee and I have done a lot of dieting in the past, which has probably stuffed up my metabolism.

5:2 isn't just about weight loss either, there is evidence that fasting will makes us healthier overall, isn't there?

I am pleased that I did some HIIT yesterday - in the pool, swam my heart out. Doesn't seem like much - 10 laps as fast as I could with a slow lap between, as well as 10 warming up and 10 at moderate pace to finish. It felt really good to get my heart pumping like that, to feel breathless, and I plan to do it every time now. Grin Maybe it will help with weight loss, which would be a bonus.

5to2waaaa · 11/03/2014 23:15

Hi all!

Have been lurking on these threads for a good while and getting inspiration from you all :)

My worry is that the threads have been getting a little more prescriptive of late? And may put people off who are starting without knowledge of older threads.

I've noticed this change over the last month or so, and wonder if this is a good message?

I think the wonder of 5:2 is it is a basically easy system to get your head around? But now there's talk of banned foods, cancer risks, bad foods etc. (There are more examples over the last month, but annoyingly I can't remember them!)

It just feels like it's shifted too far from the basically simple original premise? Which is fine if you're a seasoned faster, but potentially off-putting for someone new to the WOE.

I'm not having a go! Just worried that new-comers may find it all too much if they dip in for a read?

Happy fasting all :)

Eatriskier · 12/03/2014 06:18

5to2
Ive not noticed the same as you at all I'm afraid. There are people here who have jointly encouraged each other into a sugar ban and/or lent arrangement but no one has been selling it as part of 5:2. If people have specific issues there are knowledgeable people on here who will give their opinions on what can help them but again it's advice to live alongside 5:2. Healthy eating is always encouraged here. We have people like tip and bigchoc who are able to give very good advice on how to change your lifestyle to a more healthier one but then they don't agree on some things like diet drinks, nor do they sell it as part of 5:2.
When anyone starts up the main advice is usually the same, start with calculating your tdee and fast two days a week. If it works then great, if it needs tweaking then pop in and someone can give you an idea.
Personally I've always thought this is why this woe rocks. It's completely adaptable for you and your circumstances, there's nothing prescriptive about it.

BetsyBell · 12/03/2014 07:26

52waah I could look that way BUT I've noticed that there have been a lot of specific questions that have been answered well. We are lucky enough to have some very knowledgable folk on this thread who are happy to to take time to impart reasoned, scientific diet and fitness information that they have gathered through many hours of careful research and gym activity (thinking about bigchoc of course).

I think most people do 5:2 in a way that works for them, but if extra help and ideas are needed then this is the forum for it. Grin

BetsyBell · 12/03/2014 07:28

Oops, name fail: 5to2waaa and that sentence should start it.
