Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

I'm pretty relaxed about telling people - most people have heard of it. If I get any negative comments I'll remind them that 5 days a week I eat not at a deficit. And if the negativity continues I'll say "I'm giving it a trial for a month, and I'll reassess after that".

ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2014 08:01

Morning all - SV to report, 57.9kg this morning which is nearly 1kg/2lb less than last week and .5 kg/1lb down on pre-halfterm previous low. Smile.

Tummy rumbling already so not sure whether today will be a brekkie-skipping one. I'll get some more tea in a moment and then try to start working

ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2014 08:03

meant to say, hopeful - if you're going to lose an inch off anywhere, the waist is def the best place! Perhaps that means you're preferentially losing visceral fat which is the most unhealthy sort?

Megrim · 07/03/2014 08:20

Wow at Betsy's photos!

I too found yesterday's FD quite hard, succumbed to a piece of Wensleydale with cranberries at tea time, which pushed me from my usual 550 calories to 670.

But had a major SV this morning, jumped on the scales (unofficial weighing in, as usual day is Sunday) and was finally under 11 stone, coming in at 10 st 13.0. Was amazed as the last three Sundays have been 11 st 3 point something. It's weird how my weight doesn't change much for a while and then a big lump comes off.

MetellaEstMater · 07/03/2014 08:40

I'm finding most people are much more accepting if this WOE than standard diets, or perhaps it's because of the health benefits in much more comfortable with telling people I'm adopting 5:2 as opposed to saying I'm on a particular diet.

Congratulations on the SVs!

BetsyBell · 07/03/2014 08:54

Hopeful I second Errol - waist is perfect place to lose an inch, visceral fat is the nasty, organ coating stuff so a smaller waist means that is the stuff being reduced.

I'm pleased the the photos are helpful. The summer 2011 set of photos were the ones that made me realise I was putting on weight - by the time I got it together to weigh myself I was shocked to find myself in the obese category. It seems ridiculous I know but I did not realise at the time I'd got that big. Before then, I seemed to stay around the same size (closer to the bottom picture) which most of the time I could convince myself was ok and it seemed to be self limiting so I didn't worry about it.

Before babies I was a bit slimmer than that - smaller waist, flat tummy - but really just as flabby. I'd had periods of skinnyness due to illness in my early 20s so I looked good but felt crap and was weak.

However, I did always feel self conscious of my body. I could make it look good in clothes but I always felt like I had all the grace and poise of a herd of elephants.

Now is the first time I've felt really fit and healthy. It's taken 2.5 years for me to feel enough distance from the 2011 photo for me to be able to look at it and know that I have made permanent changes. I will not slide into the various ailments that have affected the generations before me in my family and I'm determined to keep myself fitter and healthier than I ever imagined I could be.

The icing on the proverbial cake is having DS1 (aged 9) tell me that I've inspired him. He wants to be fit and healthy like his mum.

Mega NSV there! Smile With me its sort of been the other way round Blush... seeing my DD growing muscles from regular watersports made me realise that change is possible and being a small female was no excuse for feebleness!

Miffytastic · 07/03/2014 09:47

Ace result Megrim :D

Miffytastic · 07/03/2014 09:50

Mazzle don't be down, remember how much you've lost and Megrim's loss shows that it doesn't always come off uniformly. I can do the self-sabotaging very well too. Hang in there and don't slip off the wagon!

smaths · 07/03/2014 09:57

I would just like to say thank you to BigChoc and all the other people who have put all the information and advice about 5:2/IF on this site. I'm 34 and have been a fatty for my entire adult life. At my heaviest, around 10 years ago, I was around 16 stone/size 20 but for the past 8 years I've hovered between 14st and 14.4 (size 16/18). This seems to be a "stable weight" for me, I've had two children in the past 2 years and was back to this weight within 2 weeks of having them, but have never really succeeded in being any smaller (nor have I really tried, I made a couple of half-hearted attempts at dieting in my 20s and that's how I lost a couple of stone from the 16 but I was utterly miserable watching what I eat all the time).

5:2 appeals to me greatly as I like the "science" behind it and I also like the mental aspect of "it's only for a day, you can have [foodstuff] tomorrow" (if you still want it - often not).

I started 5:2 four weeks ago and have found it surprisingly easy to adhere to. My diet isn't too unhealthy, but I have a real problem with portion size and I don't really exercise. I am delighted with my results so far, which are:

start weight 88.9kg (14 stone) now 84.8kg (13 st 5)
start body fat 50.1% (eek!) now 47.4% (i have fat measuring scales)
start waist 42in now 40.5in
start hips 42 in now 40in
start bust 39.5in now 37.5in

So I have lost 9lbs, 2.5% body fat and 5 and a half inches in a month. Amazing!! Going forward I know that it's going to get harder, so I will try and introduce exercise and work on portion control during NF days to keep the momentum going. Got a long way to go, but I am going on holiday in September so my first goal is to be ready for it and not look like a beached whale in my swimsuit.

womblesofwestminster · 07/03/2014 10:33

MazzleDazzle Don't worry about the odd week of maintaining. Are you due on by any chance?

MelanieCheeks you mention negative comments, what have folk been saying?

smaths Congrats on the excellent start!

MrsFlorrick · 07/03/2014 10:52

Betsy! GrinGrin You chop wood with your hands! Just brilliant.
Once I post my "before" pics you'll see a similar story from me. And in a similar time frame to.

Ugh. NFD today after successful
fD yesterday. However I didn't have breakfast and just went into Starbucks. Bit of a sugar binge. Had a cinnamon swirl and a skinny coffee. Ate the swirl but had to stop drinking the coffe halfway as I felt so so sick. Almost thought I was going to pass out and be sick at the same time. Ugh.

Moral is don't binge immediately after fasting. Not on sugary shite anyway or you will feel ill and risk public vomming! Hmm

Yuk. How disgusting. Once upon a time I could have eaten several cakes and had several coffees no problem.

CiderwithBuda · 07/03/2014 11:31

Morning all. Another one who struggled with a FD yesterday. Was hungry all day so gave in and ate. Was at just under 500 late afternoon and the hunger went then. Had a meeting at DS's school and when we came back around 8.30 I made him pancakes. First one was a disaster and broke up so once he had had his I ended up eating that. I enjoyed it and stopped there. Need to work out how many calories but it wasn't too bad. I just had lemon and sugar with it.

Finding all the before and after photos inspiring. Well done all of you.

I weighed this morning and seem to have lost 4.5 lbs since I started two weeks ago. Happy with that!

Challenge for the weekend will be keeping away from the wine. Am off it for lent. Main reason is weight loss but using lent as an excuse!

Next week I am going to try 3 fasts. Didn't manage it this week but will try again next week.

About to head off for my first ever Pilates class. I have been having problems with back and leg pain since before Xmas and have been seeing a chiropractor who recommended a massage with a particular massage therapist. I discovered yesterday at the ripe old age of almost 50 that I have some hypermoblle joints. Thumbs, wrists slightly and ankles and somewhere in lower back/pelvic area. So I'm starting Pilates to try to strengthen my core. I did 7 weeks of couch to 5k last year but had to stop as knees and legs really struggled. Now I know why! Also having X-rays on my knees soon and some blood tests on Monday. Also need to get DS checked out as he appears to have even more hypermobility than me. It could explain so much!

MazzleDazzle · 07/03/2014 12:52

Yes Wombles I feel pre-menstrual, but as I have the implant my cycle is very long. Sometimes I feel like this a fortnight prior to my totm.

Thank you for the encouragement Miffy. I thought the exact same when I read Megrim's post, that although I haven't seen a loss this week, maybe I'll get a larger loss further down the line. On the plus side, the slower I lose it the more permanent it's likely to be and the less chance of even more crepe-y skin!

How did the Pilates go Cider? I used to go and found that it really helped my posture. Hopefully it will help your joints too. You must be relived that they have finally discovered the hyper mobility. Your poor DS, though at least they have discovered his at a young age.

After my morning work out I broke my fast with...

2 slices Kingsmill 50/50 toast and butter
2 Dutch crispbreads and butter
A slice of cheese
Bag of Golden Wonder crisps

Which, the way I'm feeling now, is actually fine. Roast chicken for tea (might try Jamie's lager can method) and maybe some wine and chocolate, since it's Fri and a NFD.

FabBakerGirl · 07/03/2014 13:03

Hello everyone

Apologies for being rubbish at chatting. Still sore from car crash and now I have food poisoning. We have worked out from what but I am a bit Confused as to why DH was ill on Wednesday and mine started yesterday and really is bleurgh today. Doing a FD by default as can't face anything though had a piece of toast with a small bit of peanut butter a few hours ago as felt faint. Have made bread but can't face it.

Car gone to be fixed. Have to pick the kids up so leaving for that at 2.45 then won't be home until after 6 as they have to see the podiatrist. DH has his instructions to put jacket spuds in and I am hoping I can manage that.

womblesofwestminster · 07/03/2014 14:33

I'm soooooo hungry. This fast is a hard un :(

Tiredemma · 07/03/2014 15:00

Hi all

I had a successful FD yesterday (probably more of 600 cals though as opposed to 500)- today though I have been a pig and had burger and chips at the pub for lunch and TWO wispa bars on the way home (defeating the whole object of fasting)- however I have just come on my period - does this normally make you ravenous???? (This is my first AF since fasting and prior to that was pregnant and prior to that never took a break on my pills so haven't really had an AF for years)

womblesofwestminster · 07/03/2014 15:06

does this normally make you ravenous????

Oh God YES!!

I get ravenous for a whole week before my AF. What you have consumed pales compared to what I put away Blush Binge-central!

If it makes you feel better, your metabolism is also boosted at that time of the month Wink

almostthereagain · 07/03/2014 15:46

Great to see the photos, betsy & errol what you said both said about your children resonates so much with how I felt. I allowed myself to be overweight & unfit & hardly noticed, thought it was just who I was. Feels so good to feel well & inspire your kids & in turn have them inspire youSmile
Having said that I was completely rubbish last night & had MORE wine so was def not a successful fast. Have also managed to have sugar in some form every day since start of lentHmm Must get a grip!

womblesofwestminster · 07/03/2014 16:37

I've just served ham and pineapple pizza & chips to DH and DC. That was painful. Envy

ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2014 17:06

Well done though wombles. Last night I had to make 2 different meals for DH and DD - and didn't really mind too much.

Today we went for a walk, shared a bag of crisps and a cake in the park café - and then bought a few things in waitrose on the way home, gala pie (with some salad) for lunch. Not something to make a habit of but nice once in a while. Smile But also got fresh tuna for dinner so that should be healthy.

womblesofwestminster · 07/03/2014 17:37

Last night I had to make 2 different meals for DH and DD - and didn't really mind too much

Were they meals you didn't fancy? That helps.

womblesofwestminster · 07/03/2014 17:39

My gym is starting it's next round of public weigh-ins in a few weeks. They weigh you weekly and put the details on a notice board next to your name in massive letters. You get a happy face sticker for a loss and a sad face for a gain, so everyone can see whether you've been naughty or nice.

I've took the plunge and put my name down.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2014 17:50

wombles - the meals were fine, things I'd have happily eaten, but I fancied the ready-meal curry more fortunately. Smelled really nice heating up and tasty too. I think I'll get a couple more of those for the freezer.

If there's something the rest of your family likes that you're not keen on, doing that on an FD while you have something low-cal but delicious has to be a good strategy though.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2014 17:58

Eat, you sound very poorly. Would your GP help, or have you given up on vets ?
Anyway, hope you feel human again soon
Flowers
Betsy You've inspired your 9-yr-old - top belt grading as Mum !
We'll all have a sentimental sniffle on your behalf.

Well done on your SVs, smaths, megrim Be proud of yourselves and keep on trucking !

Well done too you as well, BeanAndSpuds, resisting those conference biscuits to have a successful FD
