Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

so does not feel like a fast day meal.

Love it when that happens Grin

Not2bObvious I'm hoping a massive mug of tea after dinner will finish me off ready for bed.

MazzleDazzle · 06/03/2014 20:46

Snap Wombles DH is making me a peppermint tea now. I must be forgiven!

Jusp popped over from the inspirational threat to say fecking hell eat your pics are amazing Shock! Showed DH and he said "Holy Christ!" - usually I'm lucky if I can get an eyebrow raise out of him!

OMG eat!!!!!!!!!

Wow - you look fantastic, the difference is amazing. Bloody well done.

Helliecopter · 06/03/2014 20:53

I'm not glad that others have been struggling today too, but I'm also glad it's not just me! I haven't really struggled with food, but everything else!

Yeah, I think from now on I'll just be a bit more vague and trot out the "eat less move more" mantra as people start noticing the baby weight is finally going.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2014 20:57

SCIENCE: Longevity, BMI, Muscle, Fat

Several scientific studies have caused controversy by showing that people in the "overweight" BMI range (but not obese) have a lower risk of death from all causes than those with "healthy" BMI.
This was even though the studies excluded those underweight due to illness and took account of smoking.

An important study DeathMuscleBMI has explained this anomoly: the limited info contained in BMI, which considers only total weight, not its composition, i.e. % muscle, fat etc.

Risk of Death From All Causes
% body FAT leads to a monotonic increase in risk
% lean body mass (MUSCLE, bone etc) leads to a monotonic decreased risk

In plain language:

  • low weight and flat tum, but with little muscle, is NOT healthy
  • we need to reduce body fat to the lower end of the healthy range AND increase muscle.

So, since January I've been targeting
waist measurement and physical strength, NOT weight

Excellent post bigchoc. Very happy to read that as that's exactly what I've been targeting since Jan too :)

womblesofwestminster · 06/03/2014 21:28

Where's eat's pics?? LINK!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/03/2014 21:36

Assuming nothing goes pear-shaped in the remainder of this evening, I think I've done OK today, despite missing my exercise. Liquids until dinner which was - because I didn't find time to shop - a frozen sainsbo's BGTY coconut chicken curry. 390 cals which is more than I'd usually have in a FD ready meal, but still allowed for a pile of purple sprouting broccoli with it, lunchtime miso, and a couple of cups of milky tea (one of which is as yet unconsumed, my bedtime mug).

One reason it went well was because I got properly stuck into some work and had to get something sorted out against a deadline which is a surefire way to make the time whizz by. Then this evening we've all been snuggled up watching a dvd .... I bought my DD the Star Trek movie set for her birthday, which we're working through on nights when she hasn't too much homework. Tonight was The Voyage Home which was good fun. Smile

BetsyBell · 06/03/2014 21:42

Talking of pics, I've found some 'before' ones to add to my slimmer ones.

On my profile (just click my name)

ErrolTheDragon · 06/03/2014 22:05

Wombles - eat's photos are on her profile page too. Wow.

TalkinPeace · 06/03/2014 22:09

Betsy
WOW, those before pictures are like Eatriskier's
they show that inside lots of chubby women are lean mean athletes waiting to show themselves

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2014 22:28

Wow, Betsy, before / after.
Think how you used to be and the difference now - you smash boards in TaeBo !

OP posts:
womblesofwestminster · 06/03/2014 22:42

BetsyBell One of your 'before' pics looks like I do now Blush

Wow eat, what a transformation!! I find your face inspiring as I have a fat one and killing to get some cheek bones.

hopefulgum · 06/03/2014 22:51

Loving the before and after pics ladies - what an inspiration!

Weighed in this morning and I am down again! Woo hoo! I'm now 74kgs, which is the lightest I have been for years! I love that this WOE is actually pretty easy. Yes, sometimes fast days are hard, but when I get to the end of a FD I always feel glad that I held on and didn't give in.

I have lost an inch off my waist since I last measured (a month a go) but bust and hips haven't changed. I am a bit puzzled by that, but I know things can fluctuate with water retention etc. I am still so pleased about the scales. Grin

BsshBossh · 06/03/2014 23:01

Betsy wow! The difference between the befores and afters are really clear now. Sterling work!

Coveredinweetabix · 06/03/2014 23:17

Just coming on to say hi as I mainly lurk these days as the thread moves so quickly. I would like to put my application in though for slowest weight loss whilst doing 5:2. I started on Sept 3rd as 11st4 lost 11lbs over three months, put 12lbs on over December Blush & have now lost 11 of them again. So, my net loss is 10lbs which, I accept, is more than some of you BUT I did 4:3 throughout October, November and since 6th Jan!! Given how slowly I have lost doing 4:3, I do worry what my maintenance regime will be. But I am sticking to it and trying to accept that I may only lose 1lb a month and that, during that month, I will bounce around in a 3-4lb bracket. After all 1lb a month is still the best part of a stone over Christmas. And I still have 3lbs to lose before I reach the very top of my healthy BMI.

beanandspud · 06/03/2014 23:56

Completed FD today. It's been hard though and not helped by being away from home and surrounded by others drinking this evening. Came in at just under 500 calories including an Alpen light bar that, whilst it didn't contribute much in the way of nutrition, stopped me from tucking into 'conference biscuits'.

But it's done for the week and whilst I don't plan to go mad tomorrow it's a sense of achievement to be finished with FD until next week!

Not2bObvious · 07/03/2014 05:56

Morning all, fell asleep last night face down in my phone! Although waking at 5.30 is like a lie on for me. Having 2 very poor exercise weeks where after doing one or another class each week, the recovery had left me only able for a few brisk walks. I think I'm going to have to stick with JM and jogging in order to function at work and home! Attempted boxercise on Monday and it's left my wrists so bad I could barely type, and that's pretty much all I do for work. There's better ways for me to increase my fitness/boost my WL that are appropriate for me and mine. Defo showed me though about pushing yourself that bit more, so going to spend some time devising a planGrin
Nfd today, not sure if I'll have breakfast or not, hmmm, initial waking thoughts are I could manage without, probably cause all my cals weren't eaten til 7 last night.
Eat, Betsy your pics are such an inspiration! I so want to be able to have my pics up there some day showing a lean me, well done to you both!

Octopus37 · 07/03/2014 07:09

Did okish yesterday, went out for a meal with my friends and had a Mediterranean platter with chicken, halloumi cheese, olives, humus and flatbreads. Just had my usual breakfast this morning, got a bit of an upset stomache, could be having a couple of alcoholic drinks last night.

zedzedzed · 07/03/2014 07:25

Morning all.

Sorry to those who had a really trick one, but well done for getting through it. Amazing stuff wombles heading off a binge before it got you.

And betsy You is hot. Yo. Do what Bet say or hot karate mama gawn kick yo ass, foo.

Wow, that's such an inspiration. So much so that I've now actually looked out some dreaded 'before' shots in anticipation of having some 'afters' one day.

Have a healthy, happy NFD people, yes you can have it today, but save some for tomorrow too.

MetellaEstMater · 07/03/2014 07:26

Thank you for posting your photographs Betsy. They are very inspiring. I am right where you started - postnatal and just under 13 stone, which I am surprised and disgusted at in equal measure! It's not even all baby weight to be honest most of it is 'living with a man and eating what he ears' weight!

Eatriskier · 07/03/2014 07:26

Thanks all again. No cheekbones here at the moment though, I coughed my lungs up all night until I finally passed out. Think it's was about 3hrs of comatose. So I look like I've done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson, including having my ears bitten off and everything!

MazzleDazzle · 07/03/2014 07:27

Covered have you worked out your TDEE? Are you already within a healthy weight range? That does seem slow. Well done you for sticking it out!

Weigh day for me today and after 2 FD, I'm the same as last week. Sad

Part of me is annoyed, but on the whole I'm okay with it, I think. Lost 1st 9lb so far and I should be proud of that. In the past I've self-sabotaged, either to commiserate or celebrate my weight Confused! I know it's my totm too, so maintaining is fine. (She tries to convince herself!)

I try not to eat until 12pm on NFD, especially if I'm workingout in the morning, so still haven't eaten today, or had my coffee or water. Maybe that's why I'm so down.

Right, I need to get off MN and get these kids organised for the day. Then it's HIT class and finally some food, which I must say I'm really looking forward to. Roast chicken for tea too, which makes everything better!
