Fasting / 5:2 diet

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Mazzle - Pilates was hard! I found it had to follow - wasn't sure I was doing it all correctly and found the breathing so different to how I used to - for instance with sit ups - I would inhale and then exhale on the exertion. It seemed to be the opposite and I found it hard. Got home with a splitting headache which is all coming from the back of my neck so think I wasn't doing it right. I have found someone who does one-on-one sessions so i might have a few of those before venturing back to the classes.

Wombles - you are brave signing up for public weigh ins!

Fajitas here tonight for dinner. Challenge will be resisting wine.

Are you Strong Women ? (or strong chaps)
Hmm
I just posted a table on the 52ExerciseThread to assess your muscular strength.

Monitor Waist not Weight

  • 25% of people in “healthy” BMI range have high levels of the dangerous visceral fat, which coats and infiltrates your internal organs – liver, pancreas etc.
  • Monitor your waist. The narrowest point, usually 2" above the navel, is a good indicator of your visceral fat. This should measure less than half your height.
  • Fat on your bum, legs, arms doesn’t look pretty, but is much less dangerous. Still good to reduce this, as it is additional weight to drag around, so may over-strain the heart and also will limit your exercise .opportunities.

TiredEmma If you must spoon from jars :
^^
go for the best: organic pnut or almond butter, NO added sugar or preservatives, just nuts and optionally salt.

Even nicer on wholegrain toast with banana & cinammon. I fall into the jar afterwards.

bigchoc my immune system sucks, always has and anything that goes to my throat makes me cough for England. DD seems to have inherited that from me poor girl.

My plan for today was to keep moving, moving, moving and therefore by the time I go to bed I'll be completely exhausted. That and the codeine linctus I now have will hopefully knock me out. Haven't been too hungry though and have shunned dessert and wine in favour of a Charbonnel hot chocolate. I have become a Charbonnel whore. This woe has changed me.

I've basically missed this whole thread Confused it's too long in the tooth to read through now! So I'm marking my place Grin

I've had a hard week and today was my second successful fast day but I gave up Monday and Thursday due to horrible shouty cunts people at work but I thought I won't let them affect my weight Grin

Unfortunately, DP said he wanted to visit the pub. I have had two large glasses of wine and my heads spinning n my stomach is burning. Chips and fish fingers in ovenGrinGrinGrin but kind of HmmHmmHmm

I've also created a stir on AIBU. Some people are needlessly bitchy because of the anonymity of mumsnet. I see no need to be nasty ever. Unfortunately wine means I bit back. We'll see if I regret it tomorrow...

evees what did you do??

hopefulgum · 07/03/2014 23:46

Yes, EveesMummy this thread flies. I struggle to keep up but I really try.

Loads of great SV's. Smile
Lots of struggling fasters, to whom I can relate. I find the fasting particularly hard in the week before Af, which is next week for me, but I have decided that it is better to maybe have a 600 or 700 calorie fast than losing the will completely and binging, which is how I feel pre-menstrually. I know it is normal, as our hormones are trying to prepare us for a baby, even if there isn't one, seems a bit unnecessary to me. Why couldn't the great human body adapt to realising it is in fact not preggers and there's no need for extra carbs/sugar/cheese/chocolate/wine...?

I was so pleased with my little SV yesterday and so I teased myself by getting on the scales again today, fully expecting it to be up after a good NFD of eating Tdee plus a bit of coffee ice-cream. Very pleased that it is under again! I haven't been under 74kgs for soooo long. I plan to be very, very good this week (despite it being pre-AF week - will need a will of iron) so that I can edge a bit closer to 73 kgs.

eat, sorry to hear you are poorly. And fabbakergirl, sorry to hear about food poisoning. That is very unpleasant. Seems weird that your DH had it earlier - did you eat the offending item the same time? My Dh and I once had a mild food poisoning from some bad pumpkin (squash). T'was very odd. We ate our dinner and an hour afterwards he suddenly threw up. After a couple more times, he was fine. Then I think I threw up an hour later. Clearly my metabolism is slower than his, but iti s weird that yours surfaced days later. May I ask what you ate that made you sick? I hope you feel better soon.

It is Saturday morning down under, so I will be taking DS to swimming lessons and getting in the pool for some laps. I haven't swum all week as I have had a sore shoulder, but I miss it, so will try out the shoulder today. Hopefully it will be ok.

Betsy, I love that your son sees you as an inspiration (which you are). It is wonderful.

NotHoldenCaulfield · 08/03/2014 07:42

Good Morning Everyone!

I've been lurking since October Blush

This thread is so motivational and I love to hear how everyone is progressing. There is so much goodwill and I have learnt so much from people like BigChocFrenzy, Breadandwine, TIP, MrsF, and all you others!

I started fasting after my Son's birth in 2012. I watched Dr M's documentary with my (skinny husband) and it just made sense. I have a science background, as does my husband. I went from 11 stones and 7 pounds back to my PPW of 9 stones in four months. Then found out we were expecting again. So my DS1 had arrived in Jan 2012 and DD2 in Aug 2013. Wreaked havoc on the old waistline!

Started back fasting last November and I'm almost at my happy weight again. Concentrating more on fitness than weight at the moment though. Had a bad knee injury just before last pregnancy and really trying to strengthen that up!

So Zed - you are doing amazingly well, and I was so happy for you after your weigh in! You contribute so much positivity and high spirits. I love reading your posts! Keep on trucking!

Well, NFD for meWink. Off to feed my beloved DS. Strength to all you fasters and everyone else 'you can have it today!'

FabBakerGirl · 08/03/2014 07:54

hopefulglum - we had chicken Kiev from Lidl. Never had it before and never will again! I only went to Lidl to compare food prices and as there is pennies in it it isn't worth the extra driving. I always take an extra day when food poisoning happens. My head is killing, I haven't slept well at all, can't get warm and to add insult to injury I haven't even lost any weight. I am sipping water but can't face eating. I could cry as we have so much to do today plus one extra job I hadn't factored in and on top of my car crash I am feeling fed up. I don't even feel like baking Shock.

Slugsonmypeasgrr · 08/03/2014 07:58

Update: I did it! Thanks guys... Eaten the eorld's largest bowl of fruit and fibre for brekkie

Not2bObvious · 08/03/2014 08:17

Nice to hear your story NotHolden, glad you've de-lurkedWink I'm on my second 'can have it today's' and have just finished brown bread & scrambled egg. I think that's probably my second breakfast this week? After a gain of nearly 6 pound - the term yoyo seems to describe me perfectly at the min - I have a lot if work to do. However I'm not going into punishment mode, because I've noticed a pattern of gaining, working really hard to lose then cause I've been so strict to lose, gaining it all back in a feeding frenzy! So today & tomorrow tdee, and 2 x fd's next week. See how a week of fully sticking to the plan (much easier without choc/crisps/wine) does for me. I'm away next weekend so want my head in the right space. It's going to be an active one so that'll be good to balance out the inevitable food'festGrin

zedzedzed · 08/03/2014 08:31

Yay slugs!

Booo fab sorry you're still feeling crap...I find Kiev's are usually pretty grim, even fancy 'finest' ones, both dry AND mega-oily. I'm sure you could invent something better (I stuffed some chicken breasts with chorizo, brie, fig chutney and garlic, wrapped them in parma ham and baked...they were pretty yum! And actually less cals than readymade kievs).

Thanks NotHolden what a sweet thing to say. Really inspiring that after your back-to-back babies you're already almost at your Happy Weight using IF; that will be me one day...Happy size 10 Jeans? I will kick your ass one day this year.

Right. Off to our building site for the wknd again...banging head from experimental foray into wine last night; yup, it still gives me migraines, vodka is far better (and fewer cals).

Happy munching NFD-ers, we're having beef wellington tonight, very exciting and a bit posh...happy fasting any mental Saturday Starvers.

muser31 · 08/03/2014 08:56

hi guys. not2 i think i am pretty yoyo too at the minute. its not a nice feeling, i like to feel stable.

i am a bit disappointed with my progress on this tbh. how long does it take to get used to fasting? i find i give up quite easily.... and also that i find it hard to pick days to do it, for example, the days i am in the house along is a nono (maybe 2 a week) the days i got out with my toddler to friends etc might be ok but it depends because today for example i am meeting a friend at a pub type restaraunt place where i can minimise what i eat but i will have to eat something. tomorrow i will be expected to go for lunch with mum... i don't feel comfortable telling people about the fast. the only time it did work for me was when i was out most of the day and didn't have too much stress. does it get easier?

FabBakerGirl · 08/03/2014 08:57

I could definitely make something better - these had batter ffs not even breadcrumbs - but I had been trying for weeks to get round to making my own so in the end I just bought them when I saw them. Downside is DH has to do all the jobs today and I know something is going to go wrong as he won't do what I would have done. He has to deal with DD and DS2's osteopath appointments, exchange some shoes when I suspect the shop will refuse and go and get the food shopping.

FabBakerGirl · 08/03/2014 08:59

muser31 - it does get easier and you DO NOT have to eat. If someone is forcing food on you that it their issue.

Megrim · 08/03/2014 09:18

muser I just tell people I'm on a health and fitness kick, nobody seems to ask anything further.

Had my first (and probably last) ever KFC yesterday evening, as was driving two ravenous teenagers home from a long day out and that was what they wanted. Was quite surprised that a chicken burger, fries and a latte came in at 800 cals (slightly less really as I gave half the fries to DS), given that the Tesco chicken and bacon sandwich I had lurking in the cool bag was 500 cal. Off for a big walk shortly to counteract any resultant KFC lardage.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 08/03/2014 09:24

Zedzedzed, I started a thread about British people at my work place and friends in my life, not having the same drive as the polish people at my work and friends in my life. I wondered why. Some people agreed. Some took offence one woman was just downright bitchy and had been all day Hmm

BreakingBod · 08/03/2014 09:26

Can I please ask you experienced lot for some much-needed advice? I've been trying out 5:2 for the past couple of weeks but am struggling a bit to keep going with it, but I'm not even sure that food reduction is really what I need Confused.

I only have a bmi of 18.5, but I have a very small frame and definitely have excess fat around my stomach. My jeans are feeling tight and my belly needs addressing. I go to 2 high impact cardio classes a week (which I really enjoy) and also wear a Fitbit so walk a fair amount daily. I'm wondering whether 30DS (which I have but haven't done for many months, and never did it for very long) might help?

But I do also need to sort my eating out - I'm either calorie counting (or fasting) or I'm eating unhealthy snacks and 'treats' all day. I seem to be constantly researching the latest diet or eating regime, try it out for a week or 2, fail and go back to eating unhealthily. I need something I can stick with. If I use mfp I find that I just end up eating unhealthy but low-cal stuff, and I also find it a bit obsessive and depressing.

I'm thinking about either 6:1 or some variation of 16:8 (or even 14:10?), along with giving 30DS a decent go on the days I don't do an exercise class, aswell as focusing on trying to eat healthily - more f&v, and proper meals instead of picking and snacking. I've also accepted that I need to give up wine - I stopped all drinking very successfully for the whole of January, but my wine habit has crept in again, but even 1 glass (like I had last night) keeps me awake all night with a bloated, sore stomach, so I'm going to cut it out again. I'm also being investigated for IBS issues, as some foods definitely cause problems for me.

Does this sound like a helpful plan do you think? Or can you recommend anything else for me to try? I've felt increasingly depressed about my body shape for several months now, and really want to get it sorted in a healthy way. (Sorry for uber long first post by the way Blush)

CiderwithBuda · 08/03/2014 09:28

Fab - you are having a crap week. Hope next week is better. Food poisoning is horrible. And from yucky food even more horrible!

Zed - your chicken with chorizo etc sounds lovely. I think I have most of the ingredients so might try that during the week.

Well I didn't resist the wine last night. Started with gin and slimine tonic which was nice. Then had a few glasses of wine. I didn't go mad. But between the wine and good intake yesterday I have gained.

Am trying a semi fast today. Haven't eaten yet. Will see how long I can go. I'm hungry though. Was just about to go for a walk to take my mind off it and got to the gate and remembered DH is out with no keys! So I had to come back. Will head out as soon as he comes back.
