Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Hey womble My lo is 11 mo. she is very dense, heavy and long though so takes a lot of milk. When she was ebf I got myself into a calorie deprivation frenzy on 500 cals a day to rival a bodybuilder. It was boring and mentally unhealthy. I ate ridiculous quantities and thought about food all the time to the exclusion of anything else. This time deliberately not pushing myself to such extremes. Don't worry if you get like that you'll know about it!

Why is liquorice tea so great?

X

ErrolTheDragon · 06/03/2014 13:40

Hellie - I reversed gradual rise in weight into a gradual fall last year doing 5:2 and not counting cals on NFDs. Finding what works sustainably for you is what matters.

hopefulgum · 06/03/2014 13:51

Marking my place. Just got into bed after a fast day. It went well. DH made beautiful scallops for dinner. Yum . I felt very tired all day but still did the fast though might have gone slightly over. I still feel hungry but i am hoping the tiredness will override the hunger and i will sleep well.

Licorice tea is very yummy. quite sweet without the calories of sugar.

womblesofwestminster · 06/03/2014 13:56

peppermint and liquorice tea

Mmmmmm where do you buy that?

Breadandwine · 06/03/2014 13:57

Eatriskier probably too late, now, but I've got a great 5:2 ratatouille pie recipe on the recipe thread - also one with a Thai curry filling.

Zed, I use my flask instead of a cafetiere - it's easier to clean and the coffee's always ready to drink. Just leave it for 5 or ten minutes for the grounds to settle.

womblesofwestminster · 06/03/2014 14:27

I'm not sure if people would approve of my newest Pinterest board. It may be construed as fat shaming, but it helps me:

'How Stupid You Look When You Binge'

Eatriskier · 06/03/2014 15:00

b&w oooohhh, I bet DH would love a thai curry filled pie. I'll go have a gander. We're having leftover pie tonight though - chicken, chorizo, chilli and veg. DH feels too rotten to fast and I only mini fast nowadays anyway. My first crack at pastry for years coming up too. fingers crossed it won't be a complete disaster.

Helliecopter · 06/03/2014 15:44

wombles It's a Pukka tea - I get it from my local Morrisons, but I think Sainsbury's stock it too.

I'm off to look at your board!

Just had my apple. Best. Apple. Ever.

Not2bObvious · 06/03/2014 15:50

On my second fast til main meal FD. Struggling a little at this point, especially since I have a family visit before I get home to eat - sob!!!! Tea, tea and more tea. I won't be tempted by choc as I'm off it and my will is iron for the next 6 weeks. My only saving grace is I am having something fab for dinner and I am really looking forward to having the full 500 cals, I'll have enough for a few crackers/cheese after my meal if I want. 3 hours and I'll be there. I'm contemplating not weighing in til next week, allow another 2 x fd's on a choc/crisp/wine free week - surely it'll get me on track? Amazing how many cals I have to play with not having to make room for junk!

Breadandwine · 06/03/2014 16:02

Eat - it's made with a bread dough.

I don't 'do' pastry! 'Anything made with pastry can be made with a bread dough' is my motto! Grin

It's easier, cheaper and lower in calories!

HTH.

womblesofwestminster · 06/03/2014 17:51

How's everyone doing? It's my FD tomorrow, which puts me in a vulnerable position tonight as I have a tendency to binge the night before a fast. Must. stay. strong.

almostthereagain · 06/03/2014 18:00

Don't do it womble!
Eat 1/2 fat to flour, just enough water to bind, cold ingredients, chill before rolling, easy peasy! Good luck.
Have weakened & had a small bowl of cereal. Not sure if I have enough cals for dinner nowSad

Helliecopter · 06/03/2014 18:08

Waiting for OH to get home and I'm getting hungry now.

Been grouchy with DD1 this afternoon and I'm not sure if that's because of lack of food (even though I've felt fine until about half an hour ago) or because she is being a ratbag today!

I'm also a bit upset as I've just been called stupid for doing this by a friend. I need to keep it to myself in the future I think. She is a fitness bunny and slim anyway. She hasn't even heard of 5:2 and any of the science and general benefits. Not used to fielding negative comments yet. When I've done SW and WW in the past people generally accept that as fine. It's not eating much that people can't seem to get their head round...even though so many are doing 5:2 or variations of it.

Sorry for the moan. At least you all understand!!

MazzleDazzle · 06/03/2014 18:39

I'm fasting today and it's been bloody hard! Have came in at 600 cals, 100 over but hey ho. I've never been over on a FD before Sad.

Eat, it sounds like your DD is just like mine! Although you seem to take it in your stride whereas I lose the plot. Hope she's in a better mood now!

I've not been brave enough to tell anyone I'm following 5:2 Hellie, as I knew people would react how your friend did! I find it really hard though, when people are moaning about their weight. I'm almost tempted to whisper "I know the secret!".

Have had 3 days prior to today's fast which were either very close to, or over my TDEE and I had to miss my workout yesterday, so feel even more sluggish.

Is it a full moon or something? Everyone seems out of sorts at the moment!

Off to circuit training...

Eatriskier · 06/03/2014 19:12

mazzle I've totally lost the plot several times. And hit the bottle! She spent today at nursery and MIL took DS for the afternoon so they both had fun, a break from each other and a break from me.

hellie I think the standard lie we tell is 'eating healthily and exercising', although I've found people far more accepting on 5:2 when they see my significantly reduced frame

I used to make shortcrust pastry all the time but as I got fatter and my hands got sweatier I lost the ability. Figured as I'm now slim and freezing constantly I'd try my own, and this time puff. Its only slightly puffed but it smells amazing.

batfuttocks · 06/03/2014 19:13

Tricky fast day today. Tried to do tae bo advanced at lunchtime and it just made me wobbly and weak. So I ate some of my allowance then - then at tea time I got palpitations so I figure something is wrong today, and have upped myself to 800 cals. Kitchen now shut and I may as a Saturday morning mini fast to balance it out.

Wombles, if you want to eat later: try to put a proper snack, not junk, on a plate and sit and eat it properly, preferably with company. Make it a deliberate meal, rather than kidding yourself you're only going to have a little something then doing huge damage. Sitting and taking your time, chewing and thinking and tasting, should help.

Not2bObvious · 06/03/2014 20:06

Hellie I've had the same experience with people ridiculing me - most recent was today after 22 hours of fasting by a relative, who not 5 mins later commented they needed to lose some weightConfused I felt like saying f'off with yourself, at least I'm doing something about my weight! I think it's probably better to be all serene and do the infuriating less food/more move.
Have gone over my 500, probably hitting 750 but I'm still calling it a successful FD. First weekend without a glass of wine in a lonnngggg time, it's going to be interesting!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2014 20:14

One of my gyms runs a WW, with the usual monthly fee. People (nearly all women) attend, some of them lose weight, but most regain all of it and more, try again, regain, give up ......

The woman trainer who ran it for years was a sculpted fitness model type and kept proudly telling us all in the gym about WW, low fat, frequent small meals, how she never lifted heavier than 2kg dumbells etc.

BUT from her early 30s she kept gaining weight, even though she WWed, kept reducing her meal size, kept upping her cardio like a mad thing.

Several years on, she is a massive yo-you WW dieter, forever jogging, still on the girlie dumbbells and now frankly overweight, saggy skin, looking old before her time. She's had to stop being a trainer.

diabolo · 06/03/2014 20:19

It seems I'm not the only one who has found fasting today REALLY DIFFICULT.

I caved and had a 2 egg omelette with ham and ricotta for supper. Just could not face soup - felt as though I needed "real" food iykwim.

Still under 500 cals all done, but I have really felt it today, the worst ever. I'm going to go to bed as soon as I can and dream of some wholemeal toast for breakfast.......

womblesofwestminster · 06/03/2014 20:23

a sculpted fitness model type

What's one of those? Confused

womblesofwestminster · 06/03/2014 20:29

Thanks for the advice batfuttocks :) I anticipated being triggered so I put a banana in my gym bag to have after my workout (when I'm normally ravenous). It worked! I'm now boiling my brown rice for a proper sit down meal.

I know a lot of folk on this thread say 'no snacks' but that banana saved me.

BetsyBell · 06/03/2014 20:30

I had venison meatballs in spicy tomato again today (on recipe thread). So good, so does not feel like a fast day meal. I had a small portion of new potatoes as well as been feeling seriously hungry after a fasted evil Jillian workout this morning. Lunch was a carrot, 30 calories of ham and some leafy bits.

Sorry to those who have had a difficult fast day today.

Keep strong bingers, frenziers and fasters! Nearly bed time (for me anyway Grin )

Not2bObvious · 06/03/2014 20:31

Well done Womble, close the kitchen down after dinner and you'll be on your way!

BetsyBell · 06/03/2014 20:34

I must admit I do the " oh you know, move more, eat less..." type comment when asked. Technically true.

If pushed, I will reveal all and follow up with lots of hints and tips.

MazzleDazzle · 06/03/2014 20:36

I'm with you diabolo - toughest fast day yet. I hope this is a one off! A bit worried about what I'll eat tomorrow!

Off to read the motivational thread to keep me going.
