Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Fab - hope you have a better day today and that you don't catch the bug.

It is so nice to post on this thread and to feel that no one is judging you if you have a bad day, end up binging etc. I had a day like that on Tuesday after Monday's fast which I am determined not to repeat. One thing I have really learnt from this thread and the "Thread for those of use who are trying to eat better" over in Chat, is that you when gain insight into your eating behaviour it starts to help. Did my fast yesterday, today so far two pieces of toast with sugar free peanut butter. Good luck to anyone having a FD today.

Eatriskier · 06/03/2014 08:36

fabgood news about the lb. Not so good about the other stuff. Hope you feel better soon Thanks

My dinner was lovely last night and made all the better thanks to my experimental stuffing. However I did hit the wine last night following the rage stress. Dd came home from mils, decided she didn't want mil to leave, flung a giant tantrum and peed everywhere. Then refused to get changed so she was put to bed early. Figured it was just over tiredness.

Turns out she is just in one of those moods. She flung 3 tantrums before we even got her to nursery - which she was desperate to get to. At some point I had to pick her up kicking and screaming from our driveway and back onto our house. Poor dh is ill and staying at home today. Ds at least is OK. Confused

Am fasting, at least that's in my control

FabBakerGirl · 06/03/2014 08:40

DH has delivered the kids to school and he now has an insight into my mornings with them...

Man coming to look at my car in a couple of hours and hopefully can fix it super quick. DS2 still sore this morning Sad. Have put a note in the contact book for the teacher to call if she thinks he needs to come home early. DH has strict instructions to be available as I won't be able to get him if it is before 2pm. Still feeling emotional but hoping that will pass. Going to get some water and plan my day. Not used to being at home at this time so a bit lost. Might go and do the ironing.

muser31 · 06/03/2014 08:42

hi there. i also agree that restricting after binging is no good, it actually makes things worse. i used to be in an awful cycle of binging and restricting, and my eating was a lot worse than it is now, now that i don't restrict really. our bodies need the food. i actually believe to a point that binges sometimes happen for a reason, especially if people have been chronic dieters in the past, or have had nutritional deficiencies or eating disorders or stress on the body. food repairs the body. food is needed to repair damage incurred by periods of starving/dieting/ nutritional loss. sometimes binging is a way of our bodies saying i NEED this. and when i finally just let my body have the food it wanted (and the type of food it wanted - for example if it wanted something salty then perhaps it needed potassium, if i really craved cheese perhaps i needed more fat or calcium at that time) i learnt to trust my body more. yes i have a long way to go - but binging now twice a week is better than doing it a few times a day which is were i was. and i got here by being kind to my body and not beating myself up. yes of course sometimes we will still binge out of habit and not cause our body needs it, but the key is not beating ourselves up, being kind to ourselves, nurturing ourselves. what would you say if your best friend told you she had binged and how she was feeling about it? you would tell her go and take a nice walk, go and take a nice bath, it will be ok, have your dinner, think something positive, get out and enjoy yourself, etc etc... we need to take that same advice we naturally give others. oops that was a bit long for a newcomer. im on my 3rd FD today.

zedzedzed · 06/03/2014 08:43

Morning all. Hope fab's feeling less sick and shaky today.

Really hope Doris can pick up the phone and wombles has a better bum day.

I'm fasting today as usual, who else is?

Only one danger point today, I'm meeting a friend at a soft play centre (with a cafe full of paninis and cakes) at 3pm...hope I can just mainline coffee there till I get home and have FD dinner at 7pm (sticky-chilli-teriyake beef sirloin strips with peppers, onions, mushrooms, peas and coconut rice).

COFFEE
WATER
TEA
WALKS
COFFEE

Good luck all, we're one sixth of the way there already!

zedzedzed · 06/03/2014 08:46

true true muser

ErrolTheDragon · 06/03/2014 08:50

FD for me too... feeling a bit discombobulated because I still feel like I'd better not exercise, and I like getting good and warm first thing on an FD. Think I'll do some necessary housework before getting down to work properly. And drink more hot water.

diabolo · 06/03/2014 08:51

FD for me too. No loss so far this week, but on the plus side, no gain either.

Am starving hungry at the moment, so am going to have a banana in a minute. Dinner tonight is only a chicken and veg broth from Sainsburys at just 218 calories.

Have a good day all fasters. Hope all of you. On NFD enjoy your food today.

muser31 · 06/03/2014 08:58

i've had lots of coffee already. i had lots of plans on what i was going to do today on my FD as my dd is being minded, but i am sooo exhausted after a stressful day yesterday, a late night last night and night wakenings. all i want to do is sit online ... not very productive. i wish i could get a boost of energy from somewhere and a motivation pill!

somewherebecomingrain · 06/03/2014 09:31

Hello all.

No way I can catch up but hello eatriskier bigchoc mammyoftwo and hey EAGLERAY my mate from another thread who has the best advice and I have immediately frozen a yoghurt as she suggests. Also hello newbies!!!! Who prob think I'm a newbie.
C
Anyway doing the 1000 breast feeders fast which is a piece of piss really after my liquid only fast madness before Xmas.

So today it will be lentil soup and kale and frozen yoghurt for lunch, maybe an egg. Then a ready meal for dinner and maybe a hot choc with Splenda. Hopefully it'll be a bit less than 1k.

Not a bean of weight lost after two 1ks but it simply feels good to give my metabolism/digestion a rest.

mummyof2girlsx · 06/03/2014 09:51

Hello somewherebecomingrain Smile Hows things with you?

Don't worry if nothing lost, better than gaining so if you are maintaining and feeling good thats the main thing!

I still haven't reached my pre Christmas weight, but only around 2-3lbs higher and in normal bmi range so I'm not too fussed. I know once the summer comes I will eat more salads and less stodgy food so that will help.

Eatriskier · 06/03/2014 10:39

Ah, so there's a spanner in the works of my fasting thanks to dh. He's asked me to make a pie tonight. In theory this is fine but I'm about to cook up the filling. This house is going to smell of yummy yummy food all day Shock

zedzedzed · 06/03/2014 10:44

Bloody cafetiere shattered!! On a fast day!! In the morning!!!

AAAAAAAARGH!

It's ok.
Calm down.

Look, there are diet cokes, a jar of crap instant coffee and a packet of Buttermint tea in the cupboard.

It's going to be ok.

OK.

I've ordered a new cafetiere to come with my shopping later...but have sadly also just discovered they do something called 'salted caramel chocolate flakes' wtf...those sound amazing...

I have hit pay and closed the page down withOUT salty flakes of calorie doom. I can have them tomorrow..although I think buying them ANY time would mean sabotage...but I REALLY want to try them on next month's totm cupcakes; banoffee cakes with salted caramel flakes on top? Oh yes.

I NEED MORE COFFEE!

MrsFlorrick · 06/03/2014 11:14

Fab. Hope you're feeling better. It's been a rough week for you!

Eatrisker. How are you feeling now? Are you better? Obv other than having the rage earlier this week. Wink

Zedzed. Shock No proper coffee. Nooooo. Tea will have to be your friend then. You can do it!!

FD here. So far LOF. Grin I've got to nail this one! I have got to.
I need to sort the belly and wobbly hanging down arse before holiday!!Shock

Good news is I am cleaning the house so that will burn some fasting cals. Grin

Buttermint tea break. May have a cheeky bovril too. Thirsty today.

almostthereagain · 06/03/2014 11:35

FD here too. Had a very late dinner w 1/2 bottle of red wine after breaking down last night, def something in the stars going on!
On the plus side I'm still full. Sympathise eat I am cooking too, it's tough!
Hope the day is getting better for you fab Smile & you'll feel better, positive thinking is goodSmile
Failed to fit in proper exercise yesterday due to breakdown & lots of work today. Will walk the dog & try to fit something in tonight.
Have a good day everyone.

TalkinPeace · 06/03/2014 11:47

I think stress - even work related stress helps me lose weight

have not properly fasted this week but am currently spinning like a dervish about the Government's really nasty changes to the £2000 employers NI rule
so am staying caffeined up.
Might end up having a row with DH when he gets home tonight as well which will add to the adrenaline calories burned

zedzedzed · 06/03/2014 12:44

All still here? Still fasting away? Mrs F?

Only 6.5hrs till dinner.

I really, really need real coffee...without it this is much harder than usual. I have broken open the Emergency Diet Coke already...it's not doing it, so 2 cups of instant later and I've just made it through the dreaded toddler Lunch with just a half slice of wafer thin ham that poltergeisted its way into my gub...so, relatively unscathed.

TEA.

Off to soft play centre soon and The Cafe of Forbidden Deliciousness...where thankfully there'll be REAL coffee too.

Good luck all, keep on trucking.

CLENCH

DRINK MORE WATER

WALK IT OFF

EVEN MORE TEA

zedzedzed · 06/03/2014 12:57

PS does anyone have a fun weight-loss goal-setting chart/diagram/ticker I can steal? Something I can fill in to set goals for certain dates, fill in my TDEE adjustments, add some weigh-ins, maybe with healthy BMI indicator included...something a bit silly maybe, all the Google ones I've found are a bit dull, no charts of progressively less fat bums to tick off.

Ta.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/03/2014 13:00

I'm about to get my miso and probably another coffee. Safe in the knowledge that my cafetiere won't have shattered because - listen up, this is life-changing if you're a serial bodum-breaker as I used to be - it's made of steel. It dawned on us a few years ago that this was what we needed, DH looked on amazon and found them - single person size and big 'un.

womblesofwestminster · 06/03/2014 13:05

MrsFlorrick Hope today is going better than yesterday.

food repairs the body. Fasting also repairs the body :)

wombles has a better bum day.

Grin Well I don't plan on binging today, so hopefully I'll be okay. My bum only explodes after an uber binge. Good luck at soft play - you're a braver woman than me.

doing the 1000 breast feeders fast

How old is your nursling? Mine is 2 yrs and only feeds twice a day so I just do the regular 500cal fasts.

FabBakerGirl · 06/03/2014 13:08

zed I down loaded Happy Scale but they have recently changed it a bit so can't understand some of it.

Car been looked at. Could be without it for 2 weeks.

Hire car ready imminently so have to go.

Keep going all you brilliant fasters!!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/03/2014 13:20

food repairs the body
yes... but not sure that the sort of things people generally want to binge on (buns and choccie) really do that. However, making sure that you eat enough nutritious food (minerals, good oils etc) can't do anything but good.

Helliecopter · 06/03/2014 13:22

Hi hi hi...

Thanks all for the welcome :D

I'm on a FD today. Week two. Finding it fine. Haven't eaten anything at all...not even the crumbs from my 3yo's hot cross bun earlier. Good grief that was hard! Loads of water, peppermint and liquorice tea (have you tried it? It's amazing!) and one diet coke. I hadn't actually planned to just eat one meal today but that seems to be the way it's working out, so I'm going with it. That doesn't mean I'm not going to cave in and have an apple at about 3pm though...

I don't drink coffee but I feel your cafetiere pain! My OH uses a proper Italian stove top for rocket fuel coffee and loves it. Try one. They aren't expensive really and make lovely coffee (well, I am told. Certainly makes the house smell amazing).

I'm BF too, but my 8MO is not feeding loads so I'm still sticking to 500. Not sure if this is sensible or not but we'll see.

I'm not counting calls on my NFDs - my TDEE is about 1860. Should I be making sure I eat all that, or just under? I was hoping to keep it simple and not worry about counting too much. I do use MFP but get a bit obsessive and so I was hoping that keeping clear of daily itemisation might nip that in the bud!

Keep going all...brilliant work. Glad to see I'm not the only faster today. Motivation and support Thanks

zedzedzed · 06/03/2014 13:33

Thanks fab but I don't have an iphone, got an android and have found a couple of crap apps but none that let me set lots of little goals along the way.

I do have a stove top espresso thing..I have THREE of them! AND I have a coffee machine...but my whole effin life's in storage and has been for a year, so I will have to live a caffeine-free life today until the Tesco man brings me another crap cafetiere to break.

Thanks for feeling my shattered pain!

Megrim · 06/03/2014 13:38

Oh yes, we sometimes use a stove top espresso maker as it makes brilliant coffee. Also have an old cappuccino maker, although all my coffees come out as lattes, which makes great coffee.
