Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Oh FabBakerGirl, poor you.
I just read about your accident. How frightening for you, especially with a DC in the car.
Have a cup of tea and some thick soup, then sit down, try to relax.
You need an early night and some extra rest.

(((((fab))))) and to your DCs

FabBakerGirl · 05/03/2014 18:50

And now DH has thrown up so that is everyone but me ill for the next week Sad.

Do I have to keep the kids off now DH has been sick as per the 48 hour rule as they live in the same house? Confused

Can't face anything to eat or drink.

MazzleDazzle · 05/03/2014 18:51

Yes Fab, I second the rest. Have a bath and an early night. Your whole body will be achy...the fear and subsequent adreheneline will have taken its tole.

zedzedzed · 05/03/2014 18:56

Shite fab poor you! So glad you're ok. poor kidlies too...but I guess they'll forget it long before you will.

I STILL haven't passed my driving test as I imagine this sort of thing happening... WHILE I'm sitting the test. Sad
I bet it'd have been fine before I had these babies; it just makes everything more frightening doesn't it?

Look after yourself, cosy up and try to get some rest.
(((hugs)))

FabBakerGirl · 05/03/2014 19:05

I've definitely hurt myself. DS gets upset when he remembers the nose of the bang Sad.

FabBakerGirl · 05/03/2014 19:07

noise I mean

CiderwithBuda · 05/03/2014 19:07

Oh Fab how horrible. Poor you.

Not sure about keeping off school. I'd see how they are tomorrow. If we kept everyone off who had been in contact with bugs we never send them to school. But it depends on lots of things. See what tomorrow brings.

I feel like I have been out of control eating today. I bought soya and linseed bread yesterday and I have eaten loads. I can't do bread. Supposed to be off it for lent! It's all gone now anyway.

Just over 1,700 cals so far. I will try and stick to that now. Fasting tomorrow.

DorisAllTheDay · 05/03/2014 19:27

Another disastrous day. Sorry. Triple chocolate cookies, bagels, croissants, this day has had them all. On the plus side it's also had a cucumber and iceberg lettuce salad. MFP has me at more than 2500 calories and the day isn't over yet. And I didn't get round to phoning for a doctors appointment. Well, I phoned, but when the surgery receptionist answered I hung up. I simply can't imagine talking to a doctor about any of this - I've never discussed my eating with anyone, ever. Really. I'll have another go at phoning tomorrow, because I can't think of anything else to do. How can this be so impossibly difficult?

BetsyBell · 05/03/2014 19:29

((((((((fab)))))))) How horrible for you all.

You don't need to keep kids off school unless they've thrown up xxx

Not2bObvious · 05/03/2014 19:42

It's taken me 45 mins to catch up on all the posts since last night. And now that I have I can't remember who said what except for last few threadsConfused
Doris sorry to hear you're having a binge/bad day & Wombles too, nasty side affect. My binges just stay with me, ahem, so they can wreck my weight loss for another wk.
Fab that's sh*t about the accident, hope the kids are ok and the bug from you dh isn't catching. I started close to the same weight as you and I'm up/down barely keeping the stone off. In my care it's cause of binging back/forth. Only consolation I'm taking is at least I'm keeping it off, I'll get there, so will you.
I've given up choc/crisps and possibly...alcohol. We'll see how the last one goesWink When you're not wasting cals on junk, I can now spend then in food - how novelConfused
FD tomorrow, planning to fast til evening again. Anyone else fasting tomorrow as usual?

Breadandwine · 05/03/2014 19:53

(((( Fab )))) How awful!

You'll get through this, you're strong! Just remember the mantra, "This too will pass!"

Doris, once you've taken the first step you'll feel a whole lot better about yourself. And no-one is going to judge you.

I've said elsewhere about how we're programmed to eat when there is food available - now it's available 24/7. Nobody should be blamed for putting on weight - it's what we do.

I'll try and find the link.

Megrim · 05/03/2014 19:53

Fab tomorrow will be a better day. Hope you nail the silly moo that drove into you.

Miffy I did consecutive FDs for the first 6 weeks of the New Year - Sunday and Monday, and then another FD on Thursday. I found it gave my system a good kick start, although I was starting to get annoyed on a Sunday that I was looking at another FD the following day, rather than being able to thing "I can have that tomorrow". It was only on the first Monday FD that I got tired and crotchety, although that might have been something to do with being out all day and arriving home at 6.30 pm to a houseful of males who instantly demanded feeding.

I stopped because I had something on one Sunday with a nice lunch that I wasn't going to deprive myself of. Have settled into FDs on Mondays and Thursdays now (and occasional Saturdays if I find I've got to 2pm without being hungry) and weight loss is still good.

zedzedzed · 05/03/2014 19:56

Oh Doris Sad poor you.

I think you'll be surprised how much it helps if you can bring yourself to open up about all this, I found it's harder to keep repeating my unhealthy behaviour once I told everyone about it, but I don't underestimate the huge step that would be.

Try picking up the phone again tomorrow, that'd be a fine start.

There may be something hormonal/blood sugar/thyroid-y going on that needs help or simply ruled out.
You're right, it's not easy, but maybe it shouldn't be this difficult.

FabBakerGirl · 05/03/2014 19:57

The woman car crasher even shouted at me. AND wanted a medal for opening a door so my kids could get out of the car. Had lovely dinner and evening planned Sad. Gone to pot now. Had toast and DH has gone to bed. Room stinks of sick so I might sleep on the sofa.

Tiredemma · 05/03/2014 20:15

fab-- awful- just awful. Hope you are all ok. Thanks

doris- I had many a day just like that- I truly wish that every day i could really binge on what I really want to eat- anything sweet. Chocolate, cakes, the works.

I returned to work on Monday- its been so busy and I haven't stopped since monday morning- here, there and everywhere. Unintentionally had two consecutive FD's (completely by fluke- no time to eat on monday and then yesterday I had to take DS to a casting in bloody manchester and had no food again all day)

I know I said I wouldnt weigh myself after my ordeal last thursday (when I felt my world was ending because I hadn't lost any weight)- Well the electronic scales in the clinic at work were just too tempting and I found myself hopping on them today. Ive lost 3lbs since last thursday.

Not sure if its teh 5.2 or the nervous energy im expending - work is so stressful that I think that is the cause of this weight loss this week so I would imagine it may creep back up at some point.

I know I said i wouldnt weigh but how many of us can truly say that they would be able to just walk past these-

Chocupid · 05/03/2014 21:15

Sorry for you Doris but just remember they've heard it all before and won't judge you!

another FD fail here too, DH is going away for a couple of days tomorrow and wanted to take me for lunch, (he's a feeder) it was lovely but I grabbed the opportunity to stuff my face with both hands and now feel sick and disappointed... may be easier to try again tomorrow when he's not around.
On the plus side we spent some quality time together!

womblesofwestminster · 05/03/2014 21:51

batfuttocks Thanks so much for the book recommendation. I've ordered it from Amazon. The reviews are good :) Can you tell me what was it about the book that you liked most?

womblesofwestminster · 05/03/2014 21:55

DorisAllTheDay I'm going through the same journey as you. I spoke to my GP yesterday. She was very supportive and reminded me how I had made the first - and hardest - step by coming to see her. You can do it!

MrsFlorrick · 05/03/2014 22:17

To everyone in here struggling.

I am struggling too. fD fail here. And I failed yesterday as well Hmm

There must be something in the air! Seriously. Everyone seems to struggle.

And I've been binging on choc. I love choc but generally not as much as this.

So I'm blaming the weather and the universe.

Onwards everyone. We can all have a FD tomorrow. We will not fail together!!

My plan is in place and I intend to stick at it!

I think I've become blasé and I'm going back to some old crutches. Ie cup a soup to ensure I don't actually scoff anything before dinner.

So you all with me! FD tomorrow and we will cling to each other until dinner time and after to ensure the kitchen remains closed. Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 05/03/2014 22:22

Fab, what a horrible set of things together. Hope your DH can manage himself - my DH had a nasty DV bug a little while ago and manfully quarantined and cleaned up after himself so that he didn't spread it to me and DD.

Doris, take your lead from wombles and make that appointment. Rehearse what you want to say on here if it helps.

batfuttocks · 05/03/2014 22:27

Wombles it just helps you to figure out what you are doing, and why. The hardest part of getting better is to accept that you shouldn't try to restrict your intake whilst sorting the bingeing out. Believe me, I know how impossible that will sound when you are in a bad place with self esteem and are desperate to lose weight.

I realise now that I was at my heaviest, most unhappy, and unhealthiest when I was stuck in a cycle of bingeing then trying EVEN harder than ever to cut back afterwards to make up for it. Even now, I have to try and lose weight almost by stealth: if I think too hard about restricting, or push myself too far with calorie deficit, its like I have a switch in my brain that thinks I am going to starve and I'll overeat as a result. I know not everyone's like this: but for me it's not about will power, its about treading in eggshells so I don't awaken the beast!

This woe (but 5:2 not adf - i would definitely start packing food in id i knew the next day is be without) works for me but only because I allow myself to go over if that's the frame of mind I'm in: I just tell myself its better to get to my goal a day or two later, than to feel like I've failed and go on a really big binge.

I really hope you find it useful. You may well need to focus on this first, though, before you carry on with fasting.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 05/03/2014 23:11

Not read all threads but from last few I'm guessing Wombles and Doris are joining me in the bingers bad books??? 3 packets of sweets today at over 100g each and a twix. FD tomorrow. Hugs everyone. Tomorrow's a new day Grin

Miffytastic · 05/03/2014 23:19

primal lass glad it's not just me. I get cold too
BigChoc - yes maybe it could be cumulative...

Hugs to you Fab and Doris hope you can make that call tomorrow.

I'm feeling good tonight because I gave it my all at the full on bonkers zumba class I go to and then afterwards I left some Swiss roll my friend gave me because it was too sweet!

FabBakerGirl · 06/03/2014 07:41

Morning all

Good luck Doris. You can do this and we'll all be here to help you.

DH going to work Hmm. Not impressed. He is taking the kids to school and I am not even sure he should be doing that. I feel sick. Yay, probably getting whatever it is. Just cleaned up as sick of waiting for him to do it and binned my slippers. I have told him he is buying me a new pair.

DS2 sore this morning. DH oh so casually says it could be whip lash Shock. No bruising on him though so I am hoping he will be okay. Got to organise who is going to fix my car today. I could cry and the woman made it so much harder than it needed to be as well. Insurers have been amazing though.

In other news, I am a pound down Smile.

Doubt I will fast today as feel shaky at times but I also don't feel like eating so we shall see.
