The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Eve I can have a hangover on anything over 2.5 small glasses, lightweight! Did a 5 mile walk to/from shops. Still feel rough but at least I've moved my body today. Tried to jog but I just didn't have it in me.
FW I've fasted with very little sleep but not child related lack of sleep, which I believe is a special form of torture! You'll get back on track and you've done brilliant so far.

Not2bObvious · 22/02/2014 14:37

Oops! Forgot to add a tip, if you don't buy it, you can't eat it. Try stock up on food that will nourish you and give you a proper lift, so a sugar high and then crash. Nuts maybe? Nice cheese, good brown bread brown. And be nice to yourself, you're doing fabFlowers

BigChocFrenzy · 22/02/2014 14:49

Fuckwittery Poor you. That sounds horrendous. When sleep-deprived, I can neither fast not train.

Are you BFing ? If so, do take the full 1000 cals on FDs.
Even if you aren't, I think we should make a special rule that anyone regularly kept awake by small DCs needs 1000 cals to function.
Just do whatever kind of FD you can manage, because you would still achieve a calorie deficit.

If you are not BFing, do you have a DP or anyone else who could take over childcare the night before each FD ? Or for a long afternoon / evening, to let you have a siesta ?

FW I am bfing a 4 month old as well and she is going through a growth spurt (I think!) and has suddenly upped her feeding. I really noticed an increase in my hunger as a result. I used to be able to do 700 cals on a FD but now 1000 is the best I can manage. I am still losing though so that's all right. I am so sorry your daughter is unwell, I would be so stressed if that happened to my little darling.

mummyof2girlsx · 22/02/2014 15:47

Advice needed please Smile

I am awaiting a date for an operation (likely to be April) and am just wondering if anyone has any experience/knowledge regarding fasting pre/post surgery. When would be the best time to fast before surgery and how long after before fasting again??

I hope everyone i enjoying their weekends. I am looking forward to home made chilli later made by DH and I may open my chocolates that I got for valentines day.....I love weekends Grin

MelanieCheeks · 22/02/2014 16:56

Little navy tester day- was meeting got coffee with some old school pals I hadn't seen in years, and they complimented me on how toned I look!

MelanieCheeks · 22/02/2014 16:57

Navy tester day? NSV yesterday!

MrsFlorrick · 22/02/2014 19:42

Evening everyone Grin

Mazzle, Tired and so many others. Amazing losses GrinGrin

And great NSV!

Breadandwine. One kitkat in an emergency type situation is hardly crime of the century plus you say you enjoyed it.

That hideous M3/A3/M25 car park situation yesterday. I just just missed it by a cats whisker. I was heading down to Hampshire to see friends overnight with DC and I was on M25 which came to a stand still just by the A3 turnoff. I jumped on the A3 and had a smooth ride down.
Other friends ended up abandoning their journey down two hours later.

Bigchoc. Liking the porridge recipes. Esp adding peanut butter or in fact any nut butter. (Drools). Grin

Still recovering here but getting better. The worn out feeling hasn't fully left yet.

DH is out getting a treat for dinner.
It's not been an amazing week and FDs were higher on cals than normal. However not awful either has I had several days under TDEE. And no weight gain so a small blow out tonight.

Eatriskier. I'm glad to hear you've got some ammo for your GP next week. Fingers crossed for a speedy resolution and recovery.

Bssh. Still twins I think GrinGrin

TIP. You're a fantastic inspiration to everyone here.

Bigchoc. We're all in awe. Your workouts are as legendary as your frenzies. Wink

And no I'm not on the wine.

HandMini · 22/02/2014 19:49

Hi all, have loved reading about everyone's great weight losses.

I've been doing the 5:2 and contributing to these threads on and off since the beginning of Jan. I don't know if I've lost weight, but I think I look slimmer and my trousers are looser.

Fuckwittery - I've just taken a week off fasting and eaten a hell of a lot of crap because DC2s sleep has been up the creek as a result of illness etc. I'm going to be back on track on Monday. Come join me!!

womblesofwestminster · 22/02/2014 20:21

Guys I've got major PMS. Please talk me out of a looming binge. Major chocolate craving.

womblesofwestminster · 22/02/2014 20:29

Womble is your ToTM looming? Even though my binging has improved there are 2 days every cycle where the compulsion to eat from morning to night is beyond my control!

Shock How did you know?!

hopefulgum · 22/02/2014 23:59

Not2obvious, I am with you today. I should also stop at 2 glasses, but didn't last night and have not had enough sleep, abandoned the attempt at a fast day, woke up with hot flushes (grr...) and generally feel like shite.

My fast day on Thursday got screwed up with a big work lunch that I'd forgotten about, and so I thought I'd squeeze one in today. Instead I just ate three gluten free scones for breakfast. Angry

Despite only one fast day last week, and a few excesses the weekend before, I didn't put on weight, and have stayed at the same weight on weigh in. Phew!

I hope this week will involve smooth sailing and no stuff ups and two good fast days....

Womble - I wish I knew the answer. I too get all bingey before AF. I have heard it is because our bodies are trying to store more carbs in case we are pregnant, so maybe eat some healthy carbs - potatoes, bread (though I can't stop at one piece), sweet potatoes?

Not2bObvious · 23/02/2014 09:10

Morning all, you're obviously all off having a lifeGrin
Back to the land of the living and about to get ready for trampolining. Hoping I get through it ok, I like to think of myself as quite fit but this could put manners on me!
Womble no pms here but I did have a little chocolate party, 400 cals to be exact Blush Could have been worse tbh! Made up a selection of bits and when they were gone, I didn't go back for seconds. I'm thinking of willpower these days like a muscle, the more I exercise it, the stronger it becomes. Now, if were Totm, I'd have eaten a box of chocs in 1 sittingSad V strange the compulsion to eat at Totm, always salt/sugar. Time to get moving, doing a 16:8 as bouncing & food don't mix. Lunch will be homemade pizza at 2, can't wait!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 23/02/2014 10:03

Not2, trampolining is amazing. I used to compete when I was young and I was so fit.

Wombles, sorry I wasn't there. Did you binge or not? If it helps I heard TOTM means you need 500 extra calories at some point of it. Can't remember if before or during. I don't have them. I just love chocolate all month long. Shock

batfuttocks · 23/02/2014 11:34

Womble I am exactly te same: one or two days a month I literally can't control the urge. It's bizarre. I often only realise the next day when my period comes just why I was eating all the carby crap in the house. Also tend to feel suicidally depressed for one day to. Always feels entirely genuine and then boom! My period arrives and I am back to normal again. I say go with it, then the week after add a third fast day?

I fasted yesterday ahead of a night out, so although I went over the 500 cals i didn't derail the whole thing. Easiest fast day yet, felt fine (in fact a bit gutted it went to waste!)

Just done an hours tae bo and feeling full of endorphins. Smile

TalkinPeace · 23/02/2014 11:36

mummyof2
The leaner and fitter you can be before your op, the better it will go.
If you are used to fasting, the pre op fast will be a doddle (do let the quacks know as they will expect you to not be used to it)
and and muscles that will be cut through or keyholed through : tone them like fury so that they pop back with as little bruising as poss.

MrsF
Hope you had a nice visit here in sunny Hampshire Smile

womblesofwestminster · 23/02/2014 12:34

I ended up binging on porridge (I'm talking, 6 bowls!) That's not too bad is it? Blush

AF is due in 2 days. Fast day today. It's going to be a tough un! Confused

I've created THIS BINGE BLOCKER for use when I'm close to binging. It's a work in progress. What do you guys think?

j200 good luck with the baby-making! Thanks When's the next round?

Not2bObvious · 23/02/2014 12:52

I love the binge blocker Womble ,I'll bookmark that.
6 bowls of porridge, hmm, were you binging or punishing yourselfGrin
Trampoline done, as suspected I'm nowhere near as got as I thought. My core is made of jelly but at least my pelvic floor held out just about According to my shiny new toy, the fitbit one, I burned up 500 cals, not quite the 1000 the instructor quoted but then again a 5 mile walk yesterday only burned about 200. One of the pics on the binge blocker felt very apt, about not being able to exercise away a bad diet. I'm beginning to see why my loss is sooooo slow. I'm hoping the fitbit will help me push through and get to goal in the 3 months to my anniversary.

MrsFlorrick · 23/02/2014 13:00

Binge blocker Wink. Excellent. 6 bowls of porridge. I can understand that I used to be addicted to porridge.

TIP. Hampshire was fab. Great to see friends and all our DC played nicely. Always a bonus.

DH took the DC to museum so I could have a lie in. Now about to clean the house. It's filthy. Who knew two small DC and a couple of tiny guinea pigs could make a place so grubby Wink. Obv the piggies are in their house (cage) and not roaming loose.

Having a quick coffee before switching the steam cleaner on to blast all grubby surfaces.

It's meant to be an FD here. We will see how I get on. So far
Only tea and coffee though.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 23/02/2014 13:22

Wombles you genius. Love it!

Kate moss apparently says 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels' when she gets the urge...

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2014 13:27

Wombles Great page, I'm sure it will help you.
I really liked What you eat in private, you wear in public
That also addresses closet binging, as we tried to do in this thread title.

Not2b Unless you are panting and sweating, you are not exercising intensively enough to burn much.
Walking putside is good for psychological relaxation, mild depression etc. However, it burns few calories compared to other exercises.

Trampolining is fun and burns a lot more, as you have found.
You might also enjoy skipping, because you can do it anywhere. We do 10 mins skip before boxing, because it kicks up the system a gear in readiness for the main event.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2014 13:55

5:2 for Already Healthy BMI

Someone earlier quoted the study about women of normal BMI maybe not getting the same benefits form IF as men.

I think Betsy and I will have to work on that OP paragraph before the next thread, because most concerns about IF for women have been debunked:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, ntbo, less fat & inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range - Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains
Several of us on 5:2 already have normal BMI: Eat, Postman, Betsy, Tip, MrsF, Bssh etc but are continuing without problems.
I started 5:2 at 24.9 BMI (to avoid becoming overweight), still continuing at 22.5 BMI and exercising intensively 5 days pw.

Not2bObvious · 23/02/2014 15:34

Well I certainly sweated enough today BCGrin I do give a lot when I exercise between kickboxing, running and weights. I can't go to the gym but I make the most of what I can do with my time and I know I'm getting fitter - frankly I'd have been disappointed if it was easy today. Today was a "treat" of sorts while yesterday a walk was about all I could manage yesterday and it was better than lying in bed. I was just surprised about the calorie burn or lack of more so! Particularly when you look at mfp or the details coming from the treadmill. Eye opener for sure
