The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Sometimes, mostly not as ive had it into me that eating late is bad. I take medication that makes me feel sick on an empty stomach, but also makes me hungry. So in often wake in night hungry.

Can just about say have survived today's Sunday fast! It is 9.30 pm and haven't done much, just treating it today as a 'rest day', been a bit stressful at work. After a year of 5/2, am now working on getting the odd binge that jumps out of nowhere under control.
I used to think it was wheat based, as have asthma and a bit allergy prone, so now am very wheat sensitive, and not eating that has helped. Crisps and corn chips are now something that triggers a binge, so cannot start a packet! Anyone else find this?

About having a binge day – many of us on the maintaining thread are of the opinion that we should build into our routine the occasional ‘feast’ day – which is what our hunter-gatherers would have experienced, along with periods of starvation. Pretend you planned it – and then put it behind you! Smile

I think homo sapiens has always been an omnivore. Fasting is said to have been a normal part of prehistoric life, due to the need to hunt meat.
Obtaining edible veg and fruit required travelling too.
Grains, potatoes, rice, veg crops, domesticated animals, dairy etc came much later, within the last 10,000 years;

So, we probably evolved to fast and get a lot of exercise. Twix bars and other junk are too recent for our bodies to handle in large amounts.

I have 1 or 2 BIG meals daily, which suits my primeval hunter-killer self ^ so much better than the 4-5 meals I thought^ I needed pre-5:2.
I NEVER snack now

On Saturday's I eat a huge breakfast or brunch, train late afternoon, then have a huge supper. So, on that day I skip lunch.
Other NFDs, I have a huge lunch and a small post-training supper.

Sun-Fri, I skip breakfast. FDs are easier just with supper.

Poppy Junk, whether sweet or savoury, is deliberately created to be "moreish" in its combination of ingredients - and chemicals. It is very difficult to eat in moderation, because our bodies didn't evolve to handle it.

Doris Don't buy that choc or other junk, for the above reasons.
Over-eating healthy food, say once a week won't do you any harm; in fact it helps to maintain your TDEE and tops up your nutrients.
If a planned FD turns i to a healthy mini-FD, fine.

Buy ONE PORTION of junk on an NFD, if you feel the need.
Whatever you buy, you'll probably eat all of it at once, so do NOT buy packets with multiple portions.

Bigchoc. Grin I don't need to hide from you anymore! I've restarted Jillians Ripped in 30.

I've also realised that in less than 2.5 months (69 days to be exact), I will be on a beach so I am seriously needing to fight for it unless I want to be mistaken for a whale and harpooned!

I do have high hopes of toning up enough to wear a bikini.

The tummy is looking better than it has done.

I think when I first got to my goal weight the skin was looser. It has shrunk a little. I'm hoping working out a lot will help.

In certainly hoping it will deal with arse and thighs. Confused Otherwise i will look crap even in a swim suit.

Re skin, scars etc - why not wear an elegant one-piece ?

I just put everything from yesterday (including the family-sized Milky Bar that I forgot to include in my confession) into MFP. It comes to over 5000 calories. Blush

Thing is, I already know about not buying junk. What I don't know how to do is stop myself buying it when the monster within is raging. There are loads of shops near both where I work and where I live, open until late in the evening, and when the monster roars it's the most unimaginably major act of will not to respond, and sometimes I don't manage it.

And I don't think I have body issues. I certainly used to, but I've gone past the age and stage of wanting a perfect bod. I'm definitely in this for health reasons - the reason I still want to lose weight is that although I don't have huge amounts of excess any more, the excess I have is carried in the most dangerous place (around my middle) and I'd like to take another inch or two off my waist to get out of the danger height:waist ratio zone. As to how I look, well I've got saggy skin from having spent most of my adulthood obese, but when I see myself in photos now I'm perfectly happy with what I see, and I like being able to wear size 12 clothes.

I think it's almost all habit with me, probably compounded by peri-menopause and tiredness, but mostly habit. Eating has always been my secret pleasure and vice, and 40 years of yo-yo dieting plus over-eating have left me habitually reaching for the sugary and carby snacks. I managed to stay on top of things for over a year of sustained weight loss, but since October of last year the old habits have crept back, and the monster has been truly relentless at times. I'm working on all sorts of psychological strategies to try to tame the beast and establish new habits, but it's constant.

OK, new target. Today is an FD and I'm on it. I've had some water and two cups of tea so far, and I'm in the zone. Last week I managed two successful FDs and two successful NFDs followed by a minor binge day then a major binge day. This week's target is two successful FDs and three successful NFDs, one more than last week. That means getting through to Friday with no slip-ups. If the beast starts to roar I'll try telling it that it has to go away until Friday, see how that goes. Plus keep telling myself that FDs are a treat for my body and remind myself how much I like cups of tea.

Doris I posted before how I (eventually !) managed to avoid junk muchies with indulgent healthier food: basically complex carbs, fat, some fruit,
e.g. peanut butter & banana on wholegrain toast, deviant porridge, strawberries & cream.

I found it impossible to just substitute low cal rabbit food (fruit, veg sticks). It really had to be in the 200-1200 cals range.

Have you tried just emptying out your purse and then just keeping say a pound coin there for one junk portion, plus a £50 note and credit cards for emergencies not frenzies

Dorismy beast is alcohol : I'm not addicted but I am habituated
I can easily polish off 3000 of alcohol calories in a session
which kind of negates the 750 deficit from a fast day!

its hard to give up what you enjoy
but I have (successfully) restricted the number of booze days, reduced the percentage and reduced the blackouts

but life has to go on : so long term is better than ascetism

I enjoy 400g cheese fondue, supposed to be for 2-3, with wholegrain bagels.
Or I mix 2 pkts of chorizo and cheese with our deli's fresh tagliatelle.

So, on the days I have 2 big meals, I can easily reach 4000+ fairly healthy cals.

There are no perfect people here:
Tip likes her tipple but chox don't tempt her; I've no interest in alcohol, but I'll raid the pud trolley of my fav restaurants.

Don't want to submit to middle age and wear a one piece! Not yet!

You can't see my CS scars. Teeny tiny invisible line and its so low that I would be showing muff hair (sorry TMI!!).

The saggy lower stomach is another matter. Stretch marks are almost gone and you can't see them. But the aging horrible sag. Hmm Yuk. And it's sags into a sort of a bag type thing when I bend over Blush ew. Not pleasant.

Suspect a miracle is required.

FD today and its ending at 649 cals and on the basis I did my JM workout, its not bad. It's actually under if I counted my workout cals into it. Grin

Just need to stay out of the kitchen until bedtime. Wink

Got my next fast day coming up tomorrow, tbh hungry at the thought of it. Gong to do the same again and have two pots of soup, within 500 calories obviously.
Today have eaten:
2 pieces of seeded toast with sugar free peanut butter
2 scoops of chocolate brownie ben and jerry's at the cinema
Bowl of homemade veg soup
1 slice of seeded bread with sugar free peanut butter
Am eating a few Tescos humus chips

For dinner am having M& S fuller for longer Beef Rejang, with a yoghurt for afters, not great I know. Googled the calorie count of the B&J's and it came up with 260 per scoop. Could have had a normal dairy milk bar for half the calories.

MazzleDazzle they are such wise words, whilst I don't feel the revulsion I felt towards my body when I was 20 and bulimic, I do feel very down on myself for being half a stone heavier than I would like and for having a body whereby it is obvious that I have given birth twice. I need to remember that there is someone out there with a similar body to mine who is very happy. Also it is true that it is all relative, I am 8 and a half stone and in my mind should be nearer to 8 to look my best and feel cross with myself for not managing my eating better, to some may sound ridiculous, but likewise know that there are women e.g. my Sister who is looking to get under 10stone, she doesent understand me and some of her heavier friends don't understand her. Its also true about noticing peoples outfits, hair, vivacity, not body size. I'd rather have Dawn French and Nigella (or the Nigella of a year ago before hear recent daliances) than Gillian McKeith.

Octopus Feel proud of yourself for being 8 1/2 stone. Only a small % of adults are that weight. You have managed your weight well.
Embarrassed if people can guess you gave birth twice ?

Whatever your height, you must be in the normal BMI range, so I bet your GP smiles at you.

i know what triggers them.... tiredness and boredom. and being too tired to distract myself with something else, and not having the motivation there and then to go and do something else that requires more energy than sitting eating

Very, very true. Tiredness and boredom are a lethal combo :( I really need to start going to bed when that sets in.

Bigchoc. Cheese fondue. (Drools).

See my problem will be that I love cheese and chocolate. I also like wine but I don't actually drink very often. Average is probably 2 glasses a week. Ie 1 or 2 on a Friday or Saturday but not every week. It's about 5 or 6 weeks since I last had Wine. Probably because I've been ill and DC have been ill so not felt like it.

However still cheese and choc. Deadly. So high in cals and I could easily munch a load of cheese and then go for choc after.

That said for me biscuits were the killer. I could eat a packet in 5 mins. Literally a whole days cals in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea.

I also wanted to encourage some if you (Wombles - hugs).

I've lost almost 7 stone since DS was born exact 2 years and 7 months ago.

I'm am now back to my pre-DC weight (at last!).

I also gained 6 stone with my first pregnancy (DD) and lost most of that in 14 months before falling pregnant with DS and gaining almost 6 stone and now lost it all again.
I had severe insulin resistance which tipped into gestational diabetes.

If I can do it. Any of you can. Seriously.
I have NO help with DC. Everyone here can attest to my DH being a chocolate teapot. No family within a 1000 miles to help and closest friend is 1:30 hrs drive away now.

I tried various diets. But didn't find them sustainable. The magic with 5:2 is that you can slip for a moment and eat the extra choc or biscuits but you know you can claw it all back with an extra FD or a mini fast. And you've not ruined anything at all.
And once you reach goal you can still choose to have several FDs a week but splash out at the w/e with a bit of a frenzy if you like.

It's so flexible and simple.

And yes it's not super quick unless you do 4:3 or ADF which is hard work. And you will have stalls. I had a 3 month long stall. It was at the end and I was about 4/5 lbs off my goal weight but it didn't matter. And obv I got there in the end.

That's certainly a different way of looking at it! Were human beings designed to binge? If so, why d I get terrible runs and cramps after a big binge? Blush

Yes! And now you mention it, HIIT was probably how they exercised, no? I'm glad my PhD is going to be in anthropology :)

Doris - maybe I should be glad that since our village shop closed there's not even a convenience store within walking distance.

Would it maybe help if you had things like bagels in the freezer - so if you feel like one you don't have to go out (and be tempted by other stuff) but you've got to defrost it, then if you want another takes time again so you've more time for your satiety whotsits to catch up with what you've eaten?


I've no desire to wear bikinis so I'm happy to find swimming cosies with tummy control ... would be nice to get my legs in better shape though. Still, most of the time when I'm on a 'beach' holiday the point is to be on the sea not beside it so I wear shorts over cossie most of the time anyway. There's all sorts of advantages to active hols! Wink

mrsF I too have the post-baby deflated, wrinkled bag stomach (and empty boobs) - it's not a good look but I see it in a positive way - my body nurtured 2 babies, those are scars of the life I have brought to this world, and I'm proud of that.

I wear a bikini but not an uber-skimpy one - I'm not a teenager! The worst of it is covered and I certainly don't look amazing but who cares? No one is actually looking at you as everyone's too damn concerned about how they look in their own beach wear. Surely you'll be running around having fun with your kids? People might see you do that and think what a wonderful person you are. Smile, be confident - that is what people will remember of you - not an imperfect stomach.

I wear a bikini. Not all the time as its too cold Grin but obviously when swimming. High waisted as otherwise my small apron will eat the pants but I'm happy enough with myself to feel more than comfy in it. And confidence is worth more than the actual look right Wink

I'm a new 5:2'er although not a new MN poster!
I've just found you all so please forgive me whilst I catch up with the whole idea of the thread and read stories and whatnot.
Hope this is ok here and not on the new thread 40 :)

I'm 36 and have two DDs - my youngest is 8 months now and I haven't really lost a pound since she was born! I've had success with WW and SW over the years and whilst both were ok I need a new challenge and WOE for this baby weight and beyond. I've loved the idea and science of 5:2 since the documentary but I got pregnant shortly after it aired so I only tried a couple of weeks before stopping. I found the days I did totally manageable so I've approached my start this time with good gusto.

So now I'm on week two and today is my third fast day. Slightly more hungry this one than the others but fine really.

A long way to go (45lbs) but steady and slow is good for me as long as it's a do-able method...which this seems to be!

Looking forward to getting to know you all and stories and progress and whatnot! And especially how your 5:2 wol fits with family life.
