Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 39 - Chocolate-guzzling is NOT wanking: It should only be done in public! Learn healthy habits with our friendly 5:2 / IF support group

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

I gave Betsy a choice of rude titles, so I save the cultured ones for myself Grin
However, this title was highlighting that the 1st step some folk may need to take is to overcome any secrecy in bingeing.

LOVE the thread title - am marking my place as am crap with keeping up with these threads.

Am pootling along still although seem to be stuck at one weight at the mo - not going up though and not really managing fast days at the moment, so actually pretty pleased with maintaining for now. Need to get my head back in the zone......

Thanks, Betsy for the shiny new thread - with a title that feels as if it's just for me! Only in my case add in buns, bagels, pastries, cake, biscuits (especially the Sainsburys cookie range)...

Hope people who celebrated Valentine's Day had a good time and dodged the worst of the storms. It's a relief to see blue sky today. I celebrated the better weather by staying in bed most of the morning. Well, it was one way to avoid eating. I should have been doing spring cleaning like MrsFlorrick but I had a motivation bypass.

Wombles, congratulations on your determination. With an iron will like that you're sure to get there. Smile

Yes, BigChoc, I think there was a problem with MN yesterday evening.

Yesterday passed off safely for me, about 100 calories under TDEE. Today I'm aiming for 1000 calories total as I don't feel ready for a fast yet (I think it would make me desperate and not end well) but it's significantly under TDEE. Tomorrow I'll aim for just under TDEE again, and then try a fast on Monday if I think I can do it. I had a sneaky peek at the scales this morning, and 2lb of the bloat had gone, taking me back (just!) into the healthy weight BMI range. I'm feeling a bit more in control now, but still fighting to control the urge to head to the nearest supermarket bakery section.

OMG BigChoc !
Thankyou so much for that link !
I am feeling quite tearful here. I have just taken my wrist measurement and found out that I am a large frame and that my ideal weight is 62.4 kilos !SmileShockGrinConfusedHmm I have so many mixed feelings about that !

All my life I thought I should be under 9 stone and felt scared about how I could get there and stay there . Now I've just found out that 62.4 kilos is 9 stone 11 .
I can't tell you what a difference that makes !
And when I think that 2 years ago I got down to 64 kilos and then gave up because I couldn't face the long slog to continue going much further down ! Hmm I could weep ! I just piled it all back on in disgust at the thought of the slog !
And when I was a teenager ! I often weighed between 9 stone 11 and 9 stone 13 and all I thought about was that number on the scales! Far, far too high in my beliefs and so I thought I was a fat pig !

I'm going to have to listen to some soothing music or something Shock.
I can't take it in !

really

Hi everyone!!! Loving the community spirit here. Think that'll help a lot.
Ok so I've had a read and not yet clicked on any links.

A supplier at my work is on this diet and he's doing really well. Then I saw it on here and am gonna go for it!!!! Grin

I know I'm gonna find this hard because I literally have no will power. A good day to me is only one bag of sweets at work and chocolate at home. I have a reasonably good metabolism (or used to) but my big fat piggery gets in the way.

I have to lose 13kg as I want to be 57kg. I've been trying for about four years. By trying I mean I've talked about it a lot. I had DD 2.5 yrs ago and put on 30kg Hmm I lost that quickly enough and had time to exercise when she was small. Now I work full time and don't exercise and I comfort eat.

I tried herbalife and quit after 4 days and I did clean 9 and lost 11lbs but quit on day 8 Hmm DP goes to the gym 6 days a week and looks like Adonis the cunt

I've plugged in my wrist measurement and I have a large frame (suspected that tbh as am a bit of a moose at 5 8"), but it has just told me my ideal weight is 11 stone 2. That's pretty generous, as I am around that weight right now but still have lots of excess fat (on back, arms, stomach etc). Think it doesn't help I have a high body fat percentage (30% - bah) though - maybe it'd be more accurate if I had more muscle than I do? Really need to exercise more to get that percentage down and keep my muscle.

My goal is more a body look than a number - very little stomach fat/ability to wear crop top without shame, but I reckon that'll be more like 10 stone or less on me. We'll see.

Fast day today, waiting on lamb tagine... mmm!

So what do you think TIP?

I've been tidying though clothes this afternoon and I wondering if I should just get rid of the ones that I'd been hanging onto just in case I get under 9stone. Once I did but it was because I'd been ill.

I also feel that at 62.4 kilos I 'd need to have a toned body to feel ok about myself . But I'm working on that at the moment doing Shred. And any how I want to exercise and fast for my health.
But I'm curious now . Do you peeps think this calculator us trustworthy ?

Lilyjo
to be honest, probably get rid of them all
except for the very few items that are such classics that they will look good even in another five years if you happened to keep heading leaner (as Bssh has)
and then go to charity shops and pick up different clothes.

if nothing else, your shape changes as you get older
I had a waist when I was young. Now after lots of gym, 2 kids and middle age I have no waist at all ... so waisted clothes are gone Smile

pandarific

BigChocFrenzy · 15/02/2014 18:26

LilyJo Glad that helped. We should consider our individual body when deciding on nutrition, exercise, aims. You may be very different to your best mate or fav actress, even with similar height and age.

Don't be too fixed on a particular weight or BMI. What is most important for anyone is waist measurement. Main aim is for that to be less than half your height. It is individual how far below it is practical to aim.

I'm sure you can achieve your goals and sustain them on 5:2 Smile

BetsyBell · 15/02/2014 18:32

pandarific If your DH reckons a decent tagine will be ready in an hour then yes, you have every reason to LTB!

And yes I agree that it's not about numbers*. Many have reported good loss around the stomach area and the inches go down quicker than the scales at time.

*I checked my ideal weight on that calculator and it came up with a figure that was 6kg lighter than I currently am (and the weight I've been stuck/maintaining at for 6 months) so am sulking slightly! Wink

Healthy weight is normally given as a range, to take account of individual quirks. Very muscular individuals may be heavier and healthy, but this works for nearly everyone: WeightFrameChart

Bigchoc you body weight calc thingy!!!!

Aaaaaaaargh.
It tells me that my ideal weight is 63kg (ie 19BMI). I'm currently 68.5.

I thought I was pretty good here but apparently I need to lose ANOTHER 5.5 kg which is what 12lbs?
FFSAngryAngry so I'm still fat. Grrrr.

Oh well. I guess that's me off the maintainers thread and back to 2 FDs p week.

Oh well I could use the next few weeks to get back on track with my workouts (its been 4 weeks since Jillian and I had a dateBlush) and whilst toning up try and shift that last stone.

I was going to have choc later. Am not now Angry

BMI 19 sounds low for anyone not a teenager. BMI is also harder on very tall folk.

Bigchoc Wink. I am not muscly. But I do have a huge amount more muscle than I did pre DC (weedy).

TIP. Thanks Thanks.

I do see what you mean about accuracy for the very small and tall.

That said at current weight I don't look especially slim so perhaps working towards losing a few more lbs wouldn't be a bad thing.

Bigchoc. The navy body fat thingy has me at 23% (it called me "fit" GrinGrin).

That said its only just into the fit range.

Does it count that I have several lbs of loose skin on my stomach (boak)?

Oh and adding 3lbs to naked weight helps too.

Perhaps it's another 5lbs for me rather than 12Wink

Report
BetsyBell · 15/02/2014 18:49

tip haha! Possibly true Grin

Those who are genuinely worrying about that chart (MrsF I'm looking at you) it really doesn't ask nearly enough questions about you to give you anything that useful. It's really just acknowledging that we have different builds though I'm not convinced all that can be ascertained from wrist measurement and height alone! Especially women.

As bigchoc says - the height to waist ratio is far more important as the waist reveals visceral fat - the stuff that coats your organs and that we really want to get rid of.
