Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Not2bobvious, you naughty girl!!! Wink How you feeling? You got dioralyte?

Not2bObvious · 22/02/2014 08:52

Like porridge, diorolyte(can't spell me) does nothing for me unless you count making me want to throw up. Time is my only cure - it'll take til evening before I recoverSad Never mind, I'd say it would teach me a lesson but as a repeat offender I've disproved that theory. Had apologised to dh, who has been v nice to me. Poor mans just happy I've stopped berating him like a fish wife. Oh the shame!!!
Anywho, I've abandoned the fast idea. But I might try do a run later, I couldn't feel much worse and having added my cals to mfp (nearly 3000, a quarter of that wineBlush) it might be advisable.
Anyone doing ought nice today?

MazzleDazzle · 22/02/2014 09:07

B&W and BigChoc, thank you, it's very reassuring for new folks like me, with a fair bit of weight still to lose, to hear about the days when your eating habits aren't what you'd hoped. It really goes to show that there is no such thing as a failed day in this WOL. You can make up for it tomorrow.

As of today I have lost one and a half stone! Actually, I'm just under Grin. It has taken me 3 months. In terms of weight, I'm half way there. My goal is 3 stone. This is the lightest I've been since the birth of DD2 who is nearly 3.

Not2Obvious Shhhhh! I have a night out tonight! You'll replace my excitement with dread. I hope I can use a bit of self-control and stop when I've had enough, but fear this time tomorrow I will feel just like you do! You have my deepest sympathy Thanks IMHO there is no feeling worse than a hangover. Take it easy.

BetsyBell · 22/02/2014 09:07

Not2 - oh dear - you got to 'angry drunk' stage, what were you drinking?!?

I am thinking that at some point I've got to start fasting again. Perhaps I should to a weigh in and find out just how necessary it is.

It sounds like we're having a day at home - 7yo seems to be currently sobbing downstairs, a sure sign he's under-slept big time. DH is off to that there big London town today so just me and the kids (and minecraft, our latest childminding service).

I've got to practice lots of Tae Kwon Do stuff ready for grading in a week's time Grin

I promise not to kick the argumentative children...

postman fabulous and inspiring anniversary post !thank you . You and I started this around the same time! It's great to see all the annual updates..
boleh well done on your NSV , it feels amazing doesn't it ...especially when you start getting all the compliments from people and you will. It's great when they tell you ' ooh you don't want to lose any more ,you're getting too thin' usually code for 'you skinny cow I'm jealous 'Envy Grin

mercibucket · 22/02/2014 09:35

hello all

been 5:2 since jan and today i lost the last pound of the stone i have been chipping away at

just wondering if you find 5:2 improves your mood (maybe not on the fd). i am overall chirpier but the day after a fast day i always wake up bouncing with energy.

have enjoyed/been inspired by all your posts. thank youThanks

KateBeckett · 22/02/2014 09:36

Wow, well done mazzie

I finished my FD on just under 600 cal, would have been less but I had a handful of dark choc chips to try and stave off a raging migraine. Didn't work :( so I am now peeved at myself for eating the extra cals for nothing!

Can anyone settle a disagreement between me and Dp? He thinks it's best to eat most of your FD cals in a morning, but I thought it was best to wait as long as possible before eating? He has done loads of research into 5:2 and has been doing it longer than me... But I still think I'm right!

Tiredemma · 22/02/2014 09:38

just wondering if you find 5:2 improves your mood (maybe not on the fd). i am overall chirpier but the day after a fast day i always wake up bouncing with energy

At the risk of sounding vomit-inducing, I really feel amazing - im buzzing knowing that I am now more confident in how I manage my diet/lifestyle change.

Megrim · 22/02/2014 09:42

Wow, lots of SVs and NSVs, well done everyone. My own NSV is I went up another notch on my belt (thinking now I might have to have even more holes made).

Kate I think its whatever suits you best - personally I find having something for breakfast kickstarts me into feeling hungry on FDs, so now I drink tea / coffee / Marigold boullion / fizzy water until 6.30pm ish and then have the majority of my calories for dinner.

EagleRay · 22/02/2014 09:48

Morning all

Weigh-in day this morning - this is the end of my first week (FDs were on Tues and Thurs). Yesterday's NFD wasn't too bad, although unexpectedly spent it at home as DD had a D/V bug.

So, anyway, here's my weights over the last week:

15/2/14 (7 days ago) - 80.2kg
18/2/14 (morning of first FD - 79.8kg
22/2/14 (today) - 78.6kg!!!

Am very pleased but mustn't get complacent! I often find I lose an encouraging amount of weight in first week of doing anything, then it grinds to a halt. So need to keep doing what I'm doing, and probably fine tune the TDEE. Thanks for the extra info BigChoc - I wonder if I'm one of the unlucky people who has a low TDEE. I think what will be telling is if I lose weight in weeks 2 and 3, if it starts to slow down I will monitor more closely on NFD. Should also point out that at this time of month I can expect to see a little bit of weight loss anyway, but it would never normally be anything like as much as this!

Well done on reaching your 1.5st goal Mazzle! That's fantastic progress in 3 months.

And also well done to Merci - that's amazing! I think I've had some mood improvement - certainly find on FDs I'm very productive at work and seem to be very good especially at problem solving and working through tasks that I've been putting off for ages (my job is very technical and detailed)

BetsyBell · 22/02/2014 10:15

kate there's no 'right' way, it is entirely adaptable to suit individuals how they see fit. You are getting a good number of fasting hours in prior to eating your 500 calories and he is getting his fasting hours in later.

I always consider each fast day to be 2 lots of zero fasting - 1 set which starts the night before a fast, and another set which starts after you've had your 500 calories. Whether that is a good way of thinking about it I don't know but it works for me!

Well done eagleray, a great start :)

postmanpatscat - I haven't thanked you for your anniversary post - I love reading them. Have you put in on the inspirational thread yet? It should definitely be in there :)

Did a weigh in after a week of no fasts - it's ok - I'll resume next week when we're all back at work and school and hopefully I'll stop getting colds which monkey with my appetite.

I think it's been easier just to eat mindfully every day, as it is the NFDs which are the hardest when I have access to my home supplies most of the day! It's easier to be moderate when there's no excuse of a fast day to fend off the excess (in the short term anyway).

I too am someone for whom porridge makes me fiercely hungry within an hour. I haven't eaten any since I realised this!

Ladies after lurking for a few weeks I have decided to bite the bullet and join you. I have put on 7lbs in last 4 months due to fertility treatment (which hasn't worked yet) and general binge eating as feeling so annoyed that my body isn't working probably. Have now ended up with a belly but sadly not a baby one!!

Anyway first fast day today and I'm already hungry! Going to have a herbal tea now and go for a walk to take my mind off it. Plan is miso soup and tuna salad for lunch and then the prawn tom yum that I have seen the recipe on here for and maybe a low cal jelly for dessert.

All support much appreciated, you seem like a lovely bunch x

jjlou · 22/02/2014 10:52

Hi Not2, I am suffering too following post work cocktails. Trying to log them on MFP this morning just made it all so much worse. Blush. It's only through using MFP that I've realised how many calories my Friday nights involve.
I managed a little run this morning which made me feel slightly.Off to my aunty's for her fabulous buffet which usually involves every pastry based food known to womankind, so no restorative breakfast either.

MazzleDazzle · 22/02/2014 11:10

Welcome j200, you're right they are a lovely bunch! Lots of encouraging and handholding when needed, or indeed a kick up the backside when needed. This WOL, I've found, definitely improves the bingeing. Sorry to hear you're having trouble ttc. Must be very tough. That said, many fasters on this thread have become pregnant. Fingers crossed it helps you!

Thank you for all the positive comments re. my SV. Much appreciated.

Oh, and I forgot to say earlier, Potsmanpatscat, your story is so encouraging for everyone. Thank you for sharing it!

Not2bObvious · 22/02/2014 11:11

Jjlou did the run make you feel slightly better/slightly worse? I'm still lying in the bed thinking of what could possibly make me feel better, darnit why haven't they invented time travel so I could go back and stop after 2 glasses (Betsy it was only wine but I'd say a good bottle and then another small glass when I got home , may as well been meth's with the state of me now)
I've only eaten 1 slice of toast, 1 sausage although I really would love a twix now....drifts off into Twix fantasy. Ok! That's it, I'm getting up and out, I've wasted enough of the day. On with the gear and I'll jog/walk/crawl to the shopping centre, bit of retail therapy is in orderGrin

BigChocFrenzy · 22/02/2014 11:30

Well done indeed, Mazzle. 21 lb or 1.5 stone is wonderful in 3 months. Already half-way to your goal, wow !
Flowers
You always sound pretty disciplined and serious about losing, so you really earned your success.
^^ Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 22/02/2014 11:32

Welcome to our WOL, J200. I hope you enjoy it and have the same success so many of us have had.
It can take 2-3 weeks to get used to fasting, so post whenever you need support or advice.

TalkinPeace · 22/02/2014 12:14

j200
there was a thread a while back about the problems of fasting while TTC and about four people piled in saying they had fallen accidentally pregnant once they started fasting
the suspicion was - and later discussion went on for a while
that the fasting kicks your whole body into a different gear
so it might do the trick for you too Wink

Emmabryant123 · 22/02/2014 12:40

Nfd Today
Started with porridge with sliced banana, mixed dried fruit and flaked almonds and a caramel hot choc
Now having a coffee with the last of the coffee from the jar but its not strong enough for me.
Dinner is chicken fagitas may add some grated cheese to them and hm chips to
Tomorrow out at a Chinese buffet restaurant about 2pm for late lunch so will save my self for that
Then liquid only until 6:30pm Monday night (but not 500 cal) as don't want to loose more weight but I want the health benefits

postmanpatscat · 22/02/2014 12:56

Well done mazzle merci and eagle on your losses.

And thanks for all your support, fasters. We are both winners and losers!

j200 · 22/02/2014 12:59

Thanks Ladies, if this WOL gets me a BFP then even more reason to stick with it Grin
Survived the hunger pangs and the sunshine is amazing- really feel positive! The success stories are so inspirational! If I lose a pound a week I will be pleased...

batfuttocks · 22/02/2014 13:25

J200: hello! Just wondering, are you above your ideal BMI? If so, losing weight may help you to get your bfp. However, if your BMI is 25 or below you may find it doesn't. There's a link (I think. Few posts above and also in the op) to explain that stressing your body by fasting turns off hormone production in some women, leading to infrequent or absent periods. Started fasting during trying for a baby and had to stop for that reason. I had to gain a stone or so as I was a low BMI (was fasting for the health benefits at that time!) and then ended up falling pregnant two days before starting fertility treatment! Unfortunately, although I have now got the lovely baby I was trying for, I also still have that extra stone so I am back here again ;-)

Best of luck to you but just thought I'd mention it's not always useful to lose weight when ttc UNLESS you are overweight to begin with.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/02/2014 13:27

I especially love Saturdays on this WOL !

I enjoyed watching the cleaning duo make my flat all sparkly clean again and I'm going to the gym shortly.
I'll have early supper at my favourite local restaurant, where I'll eat an absolutely delicious 3000 cals, mostly healthy, all top quality, but including dessert.

So, I skipped breakfast, just had a shake for lunch, with another shake planned right after spin.
Yesterday was an FD with fasted training and the restaurant does only award-winning slow food (!) so I'll be chewing the table by the time food comes.
Supper will be worth it though.

For those who asked about being able to train fasted: by supper, it'll be 45 hrs on 900 cals total with 2 strenuous fasted gym sessions.

On 5:2, I now want the very best quality food on NFDs; no more junk for me. This WOL has definitely improved my habits and enjoyment of life !

TwittyMcTwitterson · 22/02/2014 14:11

Sometimes dioralyte does that to me.
Last time I had it I threw up all over my feet because I'm super classy.

Do you feel better yet? Are you out of your pit? Wink Have you tried sprite? Apparently that's best. Doesn't sound like you drank that much. One bottle and one glass? Think I read it right.

I'm just cooking a chip butty. Yum!

You guys all sound crazy fit! You should be really impressed with yourself. I have got myself in a bit of financial strife. Selling my car on Wednesday and instead of getting another and lending money off my dad (embarrassing I know) I might just use DPs instead at weekends and cycle to work in the week. It's 12 miles I think and all hills. Think that'll help me lose loads of weight or my mind
