The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

that fitness in middle age is more important than in youth

BUT

mummyof2girlsx · 23/02/2014 16:26

Thanks TIP Thanks I have been 5:2 since October 2012 so well used to fasting Grin. At target weight and been maintaining for a while.

How long after the surgery should I try a fast day? I won't be able to exercise for a while once I have had the op so need to fast to limit the potential weight gain!

TalkinPeace · 23/02/2014 16:34

mummyof2
PM if you want to really natter

she'd gone under fasted too!
and was back in the swimming pool in ten days!

batfuttocks · 23/02/2014 16:39

Love the binge blocker Smile

Dotty342kids · 23/02/2014 17:14

Right, I'm here and I'll be back with the usual Monday fasters tomorrow! Enjoy your Sunday dinners everyone Smile

TwittyMcTwitterson · 23/02/2014 17:20

Who is fasting tomorrow? I'm not sure why I've chosen Mondays. they're shit enough aren't they?

MelanieCheeks · 23/02/2014 17:31

Monday is probably the most popular fasting day! It follows the weekend of indulgence, gets the week off to a good start, and isn't likely to be derailed by cocktails with friends or takeaways.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 23/02/2014 17:34

Oh, I'm not sensible enough to think like that Melanie! Makes perfect sense.

I've abstained from binging this weekend. Purely because DP is an absolute prick very supportive and wouldn't let me buy my usual rubbish on our food shop yesterday. I just want to lie hear in a sugar haze covered on sweet wrappers Hmm

TwittyMcTwitterson · 23/02/2014 17:34

Here **

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2014 17:48

MummyOf2 Please ask your doctor when you can re-start exercise, which muscle groups and how long until you can train vigorously.

After some operations, the surgeon requires you to start walking the next day, with resistance training and jogging soon after.
A pal in her 70s was required to do HIIT-type treadmill work within days.

However, some operations require a period of total rest, because exercise would hinder recovery.

If you have the ok, I'm sure I can invent a few routines for you to do - the doctors may even suggest something.

Best wishes for a very quick recovery after your op.
Flowers

Not2bObvious · 23/02/2014 17:50

I normally do Mondays but as I couldn't last week, I swapped to Tuesday and it kinda suited me. The gap of one nfd to Thursday worked well. Hmm, 16:8 tomorrow with a mini fast I reckon, sub 1000. Just cause I still need to repent a little after my big feed on Friday and choc'fest last night.
Eve you'll thank your dp in the long term, the resentment will fade as your ar*e shrinks Grin

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 23/02/2014 17:52

I have to say this week is a total washout, am having my second period in 2 weeks and feel like shit - both physically drained and knowing I'll have to go back to my consultant who will want to operate which may well leave me infertile/in early menopause....like we've not got enough on! So fuck it, I've had waffles and Im having dominoes tonight and Im seeing my friends and getting drunk/eating cake this weekend, I'll pick it up again next weekend, sorry

TwittyMcTwitterson · 23/02/2014 17:54

Haha. I thank him for it now but I was a tad upset whilst walking around Lidl.

Like I say, he has the body of Adonis and I'm a wobbly Buddha. I once told him if I weighed more than him he could leave me. We are very close to that point. He's 72-3kg. I'm 69. Weighing myself tomorrow to see if that's changed. I'm meant to be (and aiming for) 57. I'm happy with that difference. Grin

womblesofwestminster · 23/02/2014 18:12

Glad you folks liked the binge blocker Grin I'll keep adding to it!

Fast day for me today. So-far I've had zero cals, but it's been a tough day.

BigChocFrenzy :) A similar closet binging one is: "Your body keeps an accurate journal, regardless of what you write down"

Not2bObvious · 23/02/2014 18:13

You poor thing Ipoked, that sounds miserableSad Do what you need to do to give you a bit of comfort, really hope you get some treatment that helps Flowers

akarucker · 23/02/2014 19:11

BlushBlushBlush oh heck - six months off and a 2 stone gain! BlushBlushBlush - yikes - I've got no excuse (well, I've got loads, but none I'll bore you with). So, I'm back! First fast tomorrow. I wonder if it'll be like starting again, or if it'll be an easy fast? Just scrolling through the posts to see the newcomers (and not so newcomers...) who's graduated to maintenance, and who's still here....

I must say, quite looking forward to getting back to 5:2. Not sure why I ever got off track as I'd decided this was a wol, but Hey Ho....turns out a two stone gain in a few months is pretty treacherous on the body. Knees hurt, out of breath, living in leggings etc.

I always said, and still maintain, that I have 'disordered eating' but I hope this doesn't mean that I cannot find a way for this wol to work for me. I really do want it to, and I'm upset that it seemed to have backfired. However, I feel determined to lose some unhealthy weight, and 5:2 is the only thing that is drawing me back.

I hope I'm not offering any negative vibes by posting this. All I can say is that 5:2 worked brilliantly as long as I was on it. Should never have abandoned it.

Ooohhhhh....it feels good to be back already and I haven't even started yet! Planning out tomorrow's fast.

northeastofeden · 23/02/2014 19:17

hello everyone, I'd like to join please! planning to fast on Monday and Thursday this week. I would like to lose 25lbs in 25 weeks through this woe. Does that sound realistic? I seem to have gradually slipped into less and less healthy habits and this seems the most manageable way to do it, especially as I have to travel a lot for work.

HandMini · 23/02/2014 19:19

I'm fasting tomorrow after a week off. Love the BINGE BLOCKER! Thanks for that.

BetsyBell · 23/02/2014 19:22

((((((akarucker)))))) Welcome back! I wondered what had happened to you :)

You CAN do this!

Welcome northeastofeden! Lots of us will be fasting with you on Mondays and Thursdays and your goal is realistic and we'll have you back in to good eating habits too.

MadameJosephine · 23/02/2014 19:25

Hello
I've been lurking for a while now but feel I really need to take the bull by the horns and do something about my health (trying to focus in that rather than weight as I've yo yo ed all my life and had some periods of disordered eating). I'm 42 now and 15 stone with a family history of diabetes and premature deaths from heart disease - nobody on my mothers side lives past their mid sixties and it's beginning to scare the hell out of me. I have a 17 year old DS and a DD who is only 15 months and I'd like to live to see her grow up and I would especially like to set her a good example. I've struggled with my weight from childhood and have vivid memories of my mum on radical diets, at one point she hit 23 stone and was taken into hospital to have her jaws wired shut! My brother has recently lost a lot of weight following a gastric bypass but I'm not sure that's for me. I'm a scientist by background so 5:2 appeals to me because the evidence is there to support it so hoping I'll get my head round it and take the plunge this week. DD is still breastfed but it's not like feeding a newborn so should I still go for 500 cals on my first fast or should I ease myself in gently do you think?

BetsyBell · 23/02/2014 19:29

And welcome to you too MadameJosephine! As you are breastfeeding you should have more calories - aim for up to 1000 and gradually reduce down to 700.

northeastofeden · 23/02/2014 19:34

Yay! Thanks betsy that is reassuring. I think I'll stick to a simple veg soup tomorrow, maybe with some lean protein to keep me full.
Waves to everyone else! Thanks for the bingeblocker wombles I will definitely stop treating my stomach like a trash can!! That is apt!

Southeastdweller · 23/02/2014 19:52

Welcome back aka. Some of the 'graduates' here including myself have posted our stories on the Inspirational thread in this topic so please have a read through for an extra boost! If it's any consolation, I had three decades on and off of disordered eating that's improved a lot since I started this WOL.

Welcome to northeast and Madame also Smile.

MazzleDazzle · 23/02/2014 19:57

Welcome MadameJo and well done for addressing your health. My Dad was overweight and died young. One of the reasons I started this WOL was to improve my chances of living long enough to see my kids and future grand kids grow up. It's not a question of can you do this; you have to do this. I strongly recommend you work out your TDEE and calorie count on your NFD. I didn't in the beginning and actually put on weight. Good luck and keep us posted with your progress.

After a weekend of over-indulgence I'm looking forward to fasting tomorrow. FDs this week are Mon & Thurs. Fri is my monthly fitness test/weigh in/measurements. Praying for inch loss around my middle, since last time it stayed the same whilst the rest of me shrunk.

Unfortunately, BigChoc, my push ups still aren't great - I can manage 5 and they're fairly shallow. However, I've only been exercising since the 6th Jan. after almost 4 years of doing nothing Blush! I now work out four times a week. I'm hoping that the stronger and lighter I am the easier press ups will become. Have been doing boxing and weight lifting to work my shoulders/upper arms.

Keep meaning to start couch to 5K. I have a 10K obstacle course later in the year and I cannot run at all!

womblesofwestminster · 23/02/2014 20:03

akarucker welcome back! What do you mean 'disordered eating'?

MadameJosephine How often is DD bfing? I'm still bfing my 2 year old (twice per day). I have 500 cals on a fast day, the same as everyone else.
