Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 39 - Chocolate-guzzling is NOT wanking: It should only be done in public! Learn healthy habits with our friendly 5:2 / IF support group

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

I like to do the ironing when annoyed with DH - I imagine he's in his underpants as I iron them!

womblesofwestminster · 20/02/2014 19:01

I think I heard Paul McKenna say once that fat people think about food all the time until they actually eat then they just shovel it in.
And I thought yes that's me, I do that!

Yep, that was McKenna. He encourages folk to be mindful and stop when full. Admirable advice but easier said than done.

BetsyBell · 20/02/2014 19:13

You can do it wombles - there's nothing like a fast day to teach you to savour every morsel of those meagre 500 calories! Take that experience to other meals too.

It works especially well if you're actually hungry when you eat - ie if there's no snacking between meals.

I'm doing really badly with snacking at the moment. It is all, technically, healthy stuff, but calorific nonetheless.

I've been meaning to calorie count my dish of nuts and fruits I'd been scoffing nibbling of late, it should frighten me away from the re-fills...

Mimi!!!! Shock. I think I may get my steam cleaner out and blast dusty radiators at 250c and imagine H while I do it.

womblesofwestminster · 20/02/2014 19:42

savour every morsel of those meagre 500 calories!

So true!

Not2bObvious · 20/02/2014 19:47

FD coming to a close. Did a decent amount of exercise, 3 mile jog, 25 mins of JM. I'm closer to 800 but I'm calling it a success, I said to dh a few mins ago that I'd love to sink more wine and hit the crisps but I am having a cup of tea with an orange (I did have a glass & half of wine with dinnerBlush) Tomorrow, Thursday club we eat like queens/kingsWink Bring on the twix!!

batfuttocks · 20/02/2014 19:55

Yum. Just finished my pasta with broccoli, garlic, lemon and chilli. Lots and lots of chilli.

Managed to get to 7.15 with no food, only a little milk in some minging coffee which I couldn't manage to drink black.

Bovril tried today too which got me though the dreaded 4pm slump.

Huge brain fog though, which I didn't get on my first fast. Does this get better? To the point where I mumbled incoherently at a shop assistant.

Big nsv in that I handled a grab bag of giant white buttons and condensed milk, for baking, without succumbing. Smile

Well done everyone fasting today. Going to have a cuppa and a few slices of frozen banana then my mouth is officially shut til breakfast.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 20/02/2014 19:59

Not2bobvious, what's JM?

2nd day lucky!!!!! I didn't eat til 1pm and then I had chicken breast with tikka and a covent garden soup. I did have a little slip and ate 100g of jazzies. But that's still great for a ft pig such as myself. Grin I'm gonna think about another FD on Saturday but weekends are weekends. I'm gonna do one Monday and easily not eat chocolate.

And yes, I eat my twixs in public! I get looks sometimes. Not often. A friend introduced me to this and I've never gone back Grin

Talking of chocolate, you should get a kit Kat finger and drink hot chocolate through it like a straw!!!! Wink

Southeastdweller · 20/02/2014 20:00

wombles You need to cut back on buying so much crap and if necessary talk to DH about this because he should be supporting you on this WOL. If it's not there you can't have it.

Not2bObvious · 20/02/2014 20:20

eveesmummy JM is the inimitable Jillian Michaels! I watched her on the biggest loser for years, bought/attempted the 30 day shred for oh maybe 3-4 days[ grin] I've now discovered a number of her workouts on YouTube so I'm taking full advantage! I love love love Davina but sadly/proudly she's not challenging me enough since my fitness levels have improved.
Jillian kicks your ar* se

EagleRay · 20/02/2014 20:35

Evening - coming to the end of second NFD and found today pretty easy! Busy at work all day and didn't actually feel hungry til I was driving home from work this evening. Had exactly the same food as Tuesday - litre of home made soup over a long lunch period, then stirfry veg with quorn steak and a teeny bit of cheese for dinner. Still felt starving afterwards but gave it some time for my dinner to go down and feels more manageable now. Would really, really love to have lost some weight this week but we shall see - will hold off from weighing til saturday.

I think i've come in at around 600 cals again as been putting a bit of milk in my drinks. I figured it was a fair swap for the small amount of BF I'm doing, although DD is more interested in twiddling these days Confused

Tiredemma well done on your weight loss!!! Very inspiring - Jan 6th isn't that long ago at all and just shows what can be done in a short space of time.

Thanks for the prolactinoma info BigChoc - I have pretty much given up on seeking medical advice for it as been complaining about my increasing weight since the diagnosis and had the following fob-offs:

  • it's hormones
  • it's the drugs
  • it's your age
  • you are eating too much! There weren't any fat people in Belsen you know (this was out of the mouth of the consultant, and at the same appt he also told me it was my fault I hadn't met someone and had children as spent too much time going off abroad enjoying myself)

So I still have no idea what was causing the weight gain (or possibly, what was making me want to eat more food). I've been off the meds for a year due to pregnancy and BF and not looking forward to going back on them as they are pretty nasty (but that's a whole different thread) but I am pretty certain I would never have got pregnant without them and I want the chance to TTC again!

Well done everyone who got though another FD today. I'm off now to throw a few weights around before bedtime!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 20/02/2014 20:37

Oh! I saw her on a sky work out channel. Recorded to do in the evening and turned out it was a half hour infomercial and Amy child's program after was shocking. Mr motivator rocked it tho.

I've got clare Nasir's work out DVD. It's pretty good. Also done it 3/4 times Hmm maybe I'll YouTube JM. She did look good. DH goes to the gym all the time. Took me the other day and it's amazing. Million times better than DVDs. Wink

TwittyMcTwitterson · 20/02/2014 20:37

Woah! DP took me!!!! DP. Shock

DorisAllTheDay · 20/02/2014 20:46

there's nothing like a fast day to teach you to savour every morsel of those meagre 500 calories

Couldn't be truer. I treasured every mouthful of this evening's chicken and veg soup. I made the 250 calories-worth last for 22 minutes (yes, I timed it).

Well done, batfuttocks for letting the white buttons make it into the baking not into your mouth. I call that a most impressive NSV. On the brain fog, I can't comment as I don't recall having brain fog on FDs. Well, no more than usual.

Not2be that sounds like a successful FD to me. I'm afraid I won't join you with the twixes tomorrow on account of I can't eat just one, but I'll be with you in spirit and living for the day when one twix is enough.

As for you, Evees, congratulations on successful FD but did you really have to plant that idea about drinking chocolate through a kitkat in my head?

That's my last FD till next week, too many things planned for tomorrow and the w/end for fasting. My aim is to stay close to TDEE and not binge, I'll be satisfied with that.

Cheers, Chocupid Wine here's to another successful FD.

DorisAllTheDay · 20/02/2014 20:50

Eagle, I didn't see your post before. Your consultant should be struck off for so many reasons. What terrible things to say to a patient, on just about every level. Angry How can so-called clever people be so stupid and arrogant?

Not2bObvious · 20/02/2014 20:58

Doris I'll have to admit to half a twix earlier when visiting, but I quickly put the other half in their fridge. Out of sight out of mind is working well for me these days.
EveesM, nice to hear your DH took you childish titter to the gym. I have been a member in around 5 gyms over the years. These days my gym is my sitting room and my shed (where my treadmill is) I can sling myself out of bed an hour early and get my workout in before the kids wake up. I'm pretty happy with my results, and it fits in with family/work life, home workouts are the accessible way for me to work out. Sadly gyms not accessible anymore for me

MazzleDazzle · 20/02/2014 20:59

NFD here and didn't eat until 5:30pm! Was too busy and just didn't have time. Contemplated having a FD, but made chicken casserole with yorky puds for tea, so I couldn't resist. Oh, and a four pack of Toffee Crisp was winking at me from the fridge (but I only had 1!).

About to sit down with a glass of wine and DH. He has been stripping wallpaper all day and pulling off old plaster. I have been to the beauticians and the gym Blush.

B&W if I ever have the willpower to cut one square of chocolate into 9 pieces and suck each one slowly with a minute between each one...I will die a happy woman! That's phenomenal.

MrsF, well done on the dress. A size 10! You've made it!

Doris, trying on clothes just because you can? Why haven't I thought of that? Generally I hate shopping, but trying on swanky dresses that actually fit sounds like a real confidence booster.

FD here tomorrow.

EagleRay · 20/02/2014 21:05

I know Doris - I was devastated at the time as felt so belittled and mocked. He clearly gets his ideas about the world from reading the Daily Mail - if I'd had the presence of mind at the time, I would have got a copy of it, rolled it up and shoved it where the sun doesn't shine.

if you google the subject of health benefits of statins in the water supply you will easily identify him but lets not go into that

CheshireSplat · 20/02/2014 21:08

FD here too and just going mindfully over my calories! I'm part time and today's my Friday so I'm having a glass of wine which will take me to 525. I only had 370 on my other FD this week so don't feel so bad. I know alcohol shouldn't be a crutch but its only 100ml and I've had a bad week at work, DDs sleeping (or not sleeping) dreadfully and DH is poorly!

Abatha good luck with the job hunting. There's no way I could do FDs when I am at home. Too much temptation. It's south easier at work.

DorisAllTheDay · 20/02/2014 22:53

All things are relative, Mazzle. If ever I have the willpower to have a four pack of Toffee Crisp in the fridge and only eat one I will die a happy woman. Not that I would ever put chocolate in the fridge. It tastes so much better slightly melting.

I'm off to google Eagle's evil consultant. I was thinking about him all the way home and fuming. What a tosspot.

Boleh · 20/02/2014 23:01

I just need to jump up and down and shout about my 1st SV - under 11st for the first time in 2 years!

Next target - 10st 8lb, which will be 1st off and the lightest since I started with MFP in 2009 ish - and lighter than I got with Slimming World. Serious challenge!!

SunnySideOptimist · 21/02/2014 03:27

Hello all, just wanted to say, with relief, that I had a very GOOD FD today, unlike the one earlier this week. The strategy: just coffee and tea until the Witching Hour (4pm), then a big salad of tuna, arugula, lemon juice, chili flakes, salt & pep, and a Rykrisp cracker.. which was so so so good. Smile Ate a pkg of roasted seaweed while I watched the Olympics and am now preparing for bed. Probably about 400ish calories today-- YAY! And it felt good, too. Even had a weird energetic burst of euphoria around 3pm, not sure what that was about, but I'll take it.

TiredEmma your weight loss is an inspiration to me! Keep it up! And Doris I echo the others: that consultant has GOT to go.

Big cheers and huzzahs to you all and many thanks, as always, for the inspiration. Thanks

TwittyMcTwitterson · 21/02/2014 05:26

Sorry Doris. On the bright side tho, if you do it with one finger and a small drink it's not many calories but a little like heaven Grin

Not2bobvious, I like your gym home! I can no longer go Hmm he goes on dinner break as next to work. I could go at 8 or 9 when DD is asleep but I want to see DP in that time and that's usually errand running time Hmm

Working sucksShock

batfuttocks · 21/02/2014 07:22

Boleh Smile good work!

My scales were down this morning (77.6kg from 79) but its early days so hoping ill be able to keep it off.

Doris: you've lost me with taking that Kitkat out of the fridge. Chocolate must be cold Wink

BetsyBell · 21/02/2014 07:28

I hope all this low quality chocolate under discussion is being consumed in public?! I'm guessing not if no one is sharing their goodies... ShockGrin
