The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Sorry, I obviously meant no snacking between meals, darn phone

diabolo · 20/02/2014 10:08

FD for me too, managed to eat well under TDEE yesterday but then had a couple of glasses of wine.

I find it really hard to fast after having wine the night before so I'm already drinking a Bovril - I must not drink before a FD.

Supper tonight is a great chilli prawn noodle recipe I use a lot. 80 cals worth of prawns, a homemade tomato, garlic and chilli flake sauce ( no more than 70 cals) and 150 grams of Amoy noodles at 221 cals means a full tummy for 370 ish cals.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Tiredemma · 20/02/2014 10:12

diablo your prawn dinner sounds divine- would you mind sharing with me the exact recipe?

Im on a FD today after eating like a pig in London yesterday.

Just fruit tea until about 2.30 then ill have an omlette.

For dinner im having a portion of Hairy Dieters Cottage Pie.

have a good day!

abatha · 20/02/2014 10:29

Hi All,

Looking to shift a couple of lbs so decided to attempt the 5:2.
I'm rubbish at diets and am really pleased with how my first week of fasting went.

I'm currently unemployed :( and I wonder if I will be able to fast when I start working, nothing more embarrassing than your stomach rumbling in the middle of the meeting!

I have an unhealthy relationship with food and always see it as a treat, I also love sweets and chocolate, I think if I were to cut them both out I would be surprised at how much weight I would lose.

Anywayyy really pleased with my first week, I skipped breakfast had soup for lunch and a stir fry with noodles for dinner. I was surprised how much that filled me. With me being home looking for work I have been eating and baking to fill the time, I do need to listen to my stomach, just because its 1 o clock doesn't necessarily mean its lunch time.

Enjoying reading everyone's tips, its great to have a space like this for some encouragement when you feel like your slipping.

diabolo · 20/02/2014 10:29

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2249/cheats-chilli-prawn-noodles

This is the basic recipe. I use garlic instead of onion. I don't use oil (works fine with spray lite) and I omit the coriander and tomato purée.

I also use Amoy straight-to- wok noodles as they have less calories than egg noodles and everything gets coked in the same pan so it's easier. A 150gram serving oft hose is 221 cal, so you end up with a filling plates full of foods which is great on a fast day

diabolo · 20/02/2014 10:30

Miffytastic · 20/02/2014 10:41

Blah! just weighed myself and even though I've done 3 FDs the past 7 days, I am 2.5lbs heavier :(

So pissed off. It's not going to stop me but bloody hell, I'd have liked a loss to spur me on... Sad

BetsyBell · 20/02/2014 11:50

miffy how disappointing. Keep at it though as I'm sure suddenly a load will come off when you're least expecting it!

I'm hoping I've done alright this week - no fasts but I've tried to eat moderately so hopefully it'll be ok.

Still feel like crap - now feeling impatient too as the whole half term holiday has been wasted with my stupid cold.

February is not my friend this year.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/02/2014 12:02

Miffy
Your weight can always vary a few lb due to totm, water, undigested food etc so don't worry about it.
However, have you checked your calories for the NFDs ? That is a common reason for not losing, if this persists.

womblesofwestminster · 20/02/2014 12:28

It's like I'm in a state of panic, and I'm not in control of what I'm doing.

Yup, that's me. :(

BigChocFrenzy · 20/02/2014 12:47

EagleRay Your queries about prolactinoma & 5:2

I just Googled to check the science, because I hadn't heard of this condition.

General Info

  • Prolactinoma is over-production of the hormone prolactin, due to a benign tumor in the pituitary gland.
  • This causes a decrease in estrogen for women (decreased testosterone for men) and can lead to fertility problems, or unwanted hair gain.
  • It is normally treated by taking medications, often longterm.

Some Answers

  • It often causes weight gain, even when people cut down on calories. So, not due to any increased appetite.
  • Fat is sometimes considered by scientists to be part of the endocrine system, so would be affected by any weight loss method or exercise.
  • 5:2 / ADF / 16:8 all affect the endocrine system, but I can't find science articles to say if fasting would be beneficial.
  • I only found "complementary medicine" - NOT scientific- which recommend buffered fasting as treatment.
  • Fasting is for those in normal health, not taking longterm medications for chronic conditions. So, I recommend you check with your doctor before fasting . Until then, best to just eat healthily to TDEE.

Additionally
Here is a thread on 3FatChicks for women suffering from prolactinoma and effects including weight / hair gain: Prolactinoma

Hope this helps and best wishes for better health and weight Smile

DorisAllTheDay · 20/02/2014 13:00

wombles, it's tough, isn't it? I've developed a whole load of strategies over the past year and a half and they work a lot of the time, but there are still times when the physical craving for food just has me in its grasp. It's like a monster within. Still, I'm developing new strategies all the time (e.g. the re-orienting my fantasy for chocolate into a fantasy about a cup of tea yesterday just came to me on the spur of the moment via TIP's insistence on drinking instead of eating when you feel the cravings) so I live in hope of two things: either I'll eventually come up with strategies that can defeat the monster within even when at the moment it's out of control, and/or the physical effects of 5:2ing will slay the monster for good.

In the meantime, I'm struck by the diversity of ways of eating a Twix! So, those of you with more - erm - unorthodox approaches, tell me, do you do your nibbling in public? Or do/would you eat more conventionally in company?

Miffy, I agree with what others have said, and I really sympathise. It's horrible when you don't see the results you're expecting. Well done for not letting it derail you, and I hope you're able to report an SV next week.

Diabolo, thanks for the recipe. I'm definitely trying that next time I have an FD where I'm home in time to cook dinner. Speaking of which, today is an FD and I'm working late. I've got a busy afternoon lined up so I should be OK. I've had some salad for lunch (100 calories) and I've got a Covent Garden chicken & vegetable soup (250 calories) in the fridge for dinner. I've allowed myself 70 calories-worth of milk for tea as it's such a long day and might require lots of hot drinks. I also have some bovril with me if I fancy it - haven't tried it yet, but might do so later.

Welcome, abatha, and well done on your successful start. Good luck today TiredEmma, Not2Be and any other Thursday fasters.

Chocupid · 20/02/2014 13:10

FD for me today, all the binge eaters, I hear you!

I do it and its mindless really...
I think I heard Paul McKenna say once that fat people think about food all the time until they actually eat then they just shovel it in.
And I thought yes that's me, I do that!

I have a small fear of hunger... It stems from when I was 16 And working abroad i was an au pair for a french family and remember after a long day and a salad for dinner going to bed very hungry and lonely, it was the longest night of my life, so I have always equated hunger with loneliness.

But it can be overcome as I lost 3 stone last year with 5:2. I got control and learnt not to fear hunger.
Had a relapse recently and put 12lb back on after stopping, so I'm back on it Fasting today and I know when I reach goal I will continue to use this WOE for maintenance as it helps with the control.

Good luck all fasters today, we've made it passed lunch time well done!

have utterly failed on fasting this week.
Ho hum.

abatha
drink LOTS - that way the work day goes past without a rumble
if needs be take a couple of carrots peeled and chopped into BIG pieces and munch them during the day : stuff all calories but take ages to eat
(and great for when I'm at clients who freak a bit at the thought of skipping meals)

MrsFlorrick · 20/02/2014 15:32

Afternoon everyone Grin

Well done for walking away from the twix!!! Serious NSV. Grin

Having a bit of a strange day. Feel stressed out when I should be relaxed. Argued with DH over the phone which we never do! As phone arguing. And I was shouting which I sometimes do but I'm usually polite enough to do it in person.

I feel jittery and panicy for some reason.

I suspect its TOMT messing with me. Hmm

NSV. Went into HObbs tried a size 12 body con dress. It was waay to big. Size 10 was perfect.

Didn't buy it as I couldn't find shoes to go plus I don't have an occasion for it and you couldn't wear it to the park with the DC. Grin

Still. Very nice to have to ask for a smaller size. Satisfying.

However the sight of porridge tummy arse and thighs in shop mirror lighting combo. ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused Scary Shock
Yikes.

I was in denial about how bad it was from circa my belly button down to just below my hips. Shock

Obv its fine under clothes but there is fully lit view. Yuk. How awful.

So Bigchoc. I need to get squatting and crunching with you and my other pal Jillian.... Oh god I hope it will work!!

Am also going to google skin tightening treatments. I seriously need it. Shock

Tiredemma · 20/02/2014 15:36

Thanks to you all continuing to motivate me with your amazing posts- another 1lb off this week.

That makes 9lb total since Jan 6th.

Thank you x

Eatriskier · 20/02/2014 17:23

First FD back for almost 2 weeks. Easy to get into the swing of, but I forgot how bad hunger pangs could be. I'm not giving in though, and they've almost given up the ghost. Plus not too long until tea time anyway. Hope everyone else's FDs are going well today.

I keep seeing posts to eagle and getting worried that I've reverted to my old name and am posting without realising Grin

NSV, I'm finally out of granny pants. I still have an apron but its not trying to eat my knickers anymore!

DorisAllTheDay · 20/02/2014 17:24

Oh dear, MrsF, sorry to hear about your phone argument. They are so stressful. Will there be an opportunity to kiss and make up this evening? Fantastic news on the size 10, though. Since losing weight I quite often go into TKMax and try on clothes I've no intention of buying just because I can. It's the fitting into them that counts - and hey, it's much cheaper to try stuff on than actually buy it. Somebody ages ago posted a cool website where you could see photos of real people at different heights/weights. I thought it was great, but they were all clothed - a similar one with people in underwear or even swimwear would be fab so that we can all actually see that we're not the only person in the universe with a pot tummy, flabby thighs, whatever... Mind you, I don't think many people would post on it unless they had perfect bods, so maybe it would be depressing for the rest of us.

Fantastic SV, Tiredemma.

Chocupid, glad to be fasting with you again! Gosh, that quote from Paul McKenna sounds just like me. I feel sorry for your 16 y-o self going to bed cold and hungry, and it must have made a huge impression to have stayed with you. How is your fast going?

FD going well here. I was at a work meeting this afternoon where there were biscuits on offer. 86 calories each (I'm very experienced at MFP-ing biscuits, so I know this information without needing to look it up). I resolutely ignored them and got through the rest of the afternoon safely. I'm about to make another hot drink, and I don't anticipate any difficulties waiting until 6.00 at least for my soup. The way I'm feeling at the moment I think I can manage to leave it until nearer 7. I'm so glad to be back in control. Even if it doesn't last, every day under control is another day I'm not gaining weight and feeling crap about it.

I love this thread, btw. Have I said that yet?

Littlemissnutmeg · 20/02/2014 17:26

This diet is quite frankly ridiculous! Just read about Chancellor George Osborne doing it. What a load of old shit!!!

TalkinPeace · 20/02/2014 17:41

just because Gideon Wallpaper is copying us does not make 5:2 ridiculous
unless you mean ridiculously easy

MrsFlorrick · 20/02/2014 18:04

Doris. Thanks. DH is out tonight galavanting so we won't be making it up today. I'm still strangely furious with him

Intend to use anger to clean house once DC are in bed.

Eatriskier. Yay. You're back!! (((Hugs))))

TIP. You've not failed. Just deferred slightly Wink

Back later. DC are flooding cloak room yikes.

Chocupid · 20/02/2014 18:08

Waves to Doris and thanks again!!
well done on for passing on the biscuits!

And well done Eat do they have knickers on MFP??

I'm away and in a hotel so got a yogurt at breakfast incase I got hungry, but I didn't want it and have had nothing but tea all day, going to be a bit trickier this eve as we are eating out... Hoping to have some sort of fish and veg, then tomorrow I can have a proper meal out.

Hope everyone else is doing well today!

BetsyBell · 20/02/2014 18:18

Just noticed your horrible pizza experience upthread tip - totally concur - wouldn't touch that sort of stuff with a bargepole (not least because I'm tight!) However, just did a handmade pizza session with the kids and results were awesome! Not least because you know exactly what ingredients have gone in but because you can make pizzas the right size so don't have that horrible bloat feeling. We made delicate, crispy numbers that reminded me of a long ago, all summer long, camping trip to Italia as teens

A topping of nostalgia really improves a meal!

Quite wishing I had a glass of Chianti to go with it but the DH is out and the kids have had a PJ day so no calorie busting trip to the shop for us.

So, no fasts for me this week either. Half term and colds are quite the anti-fast combo.
