Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Congratulations boleh Grin Excellent work. I'm sure you'll easily surpass your Slimming World low and blow them a raspberry on your way down the scales. This WOE is free and infancy reduces grocery bills substantially. What's not to love!

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 21/02/2014 07:32

Erm... in fact not infancy Wink

OP posts:
batfuttocks · 21/02/2014 07:34

As the current owner of an infant I would have to agree: shopping bills are most definitely NOT down Smile

BetsyBell · 21/02/2014 07:48

Yes to clarify: infants in the house raises bills but fasting adults reduces them! It's a good reason to get DPs on board with this WOE Grin

Eatriskier · 21/02/2014 08:09

I'm like not2b, I have a home gym - well I have a 2 in 1 cross trainer and a hula hoop. I recently haven't bothered to get up and hour early too on a Monday and Thursday. Hooping usually happens when the kids are in the bath or when I get a nice lot of them both napping at the same time.

Whilst I was ill I didn't eat all the way to TDEE as I just couldn't. So I lost more weight. This week I decided to be more free with the calories, only doing a mini fast yesterday and a 16:8 on Monday but overall ensuring a calorie overage (not hard). I've only gone and lost another lot of weight Blush. Seriously WTF is wrong with me? I have now hit the magic figure of 6 stone lost since last April. I tried to stop half a stone ago. I don't even know where its coming from! Oh well, I suppose I will just have to have some valentines chocs tonight and wine, and make that meal on sunday 3 course...

Not2bObvious · 21/02/2014 08:36

On the subject of exercise & time, I remember Dr. Phil saying (I know I know, but I've a strange fondness for him Confused) that we've all the same 24 hours in a day and if the president of the United States could find time to jog, ( I think it was Clinton at the time, though I'd reckon Obama's fit enough) then so could we/me/you. Basically that we all had the same numbers of hours, it was up to us to make exercise part of our lives, intentional exercise. Hence my getting up an hour earlier when I can drag my ass out of bed, lunchtime walks, always on the look out for opportunities to get some movement in.
On a very happy Friday note, I'm down a smidge under 3lbs!!!! On my original scale I'm 11.2.2, on my new bastard one I'm 11.4.2, either way I'm 8 pounds down in 9 days. Over the flipping moon, very close to lowest weight, now I just need to not cock it up. Have a night out tonight, meal & drinks, got to balance guilty feelings/damaging behaviour. I'm going to have what I want BUT I'm going to eat very mindfully to appetite.
Eat I can see how the WL would concern you, especially as you're at your target. Your tdee might be a lot lot higher than you think? Time to experiment, possibly with a multi pack of twix/toffee crisps Wink All joking aside, try eat more, change name to EatAHellofaLotMore Grin

Not2bObvious · 21/02/2014 08:38

Huge congrats Boleh!!! You must be floating, being so skinny and all Wink

TwittyMcTwitterson · 21/02/2014 08:49

Eatriskier, 6 stone!!!! Sweet Jesus!!! Bet that feels good! Congratulations!!!!!!

Not2bobvious, screw dr Phil!!!!! Hmm I get up at 5 a it is and bed at 11. Ish. I don't like him now Wink Obama is pretty fit tho Wink

I have a thigh toner. still in box does that count?

Not2bObvious · 21/02/2014 09:24

Shame on you EveeM, you can't screw Dr Phil sniggers again

Not2bObvious · 21/02/2014 09:28

You could bring the thigh toner back to the shop if you feel it hasn't worked Wink False advertising and all that, no one said you had to open the box for it to work?!?!
Another Dr Phil'ish, don't shun me now, if you've always do what you've always done then you won't see any change. He said it better than that but ykwim. That in mind, I'm doing something different and have booked a trampolining class for the weekend, I have a trampoline myself(well the kids do) Hoping it might show me how to get more out of it? Also eyes on the prize, I want to see 10 something on old & bastard scales in the next month

KateBeckett · 21/02/2014 09:53

Hey everyone, 2nd fast day today! Managing okay so far - haven't eaten anything yet. I'm planning on having a banana if I get too hungry!

Have had as if few days visiting friends and family, so have put away quite a lot! I took my niece out yesterday though and I'm hoping all the running around and carrying her burnt a few calories!

Anyone else fasting today? X

womblesofwestminster · 21/02/2014 11:30

I did it again :( I binged. We need a bingers anon helpline!!

Ack. Why am I so weak?! It's only in relation to food. It doesn't make sense!

Not2bObvious · 21/02/2014 11:55

Poor WombleSad You'll be coming down from the sugar which is like having the fear with a hangover! Don't let guilt over binge drag you into repeating!
I haven't binged this week, tis early yet though, but first of all you have to sort out your environment. If you must have things you binge on, then put them in a cupboard that's not in plain sight. Set yourself a rule that it's out of bounds. If you let them, the urge to binge can fade just like hunger pangs on a FD. I know I talk myself into binging - surely we can talk ourselves out of it.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/02/2014 12:08

EagleRay
From science articles, it seems weight gain is definitely a side effect of prolactinoma. Even people who have significantly cut calories have gained.
So, it is not your fault ^^

Your consultant sounds a total arse, totally lacking in human empathy.
Yes, everyone will lose on sufficiently few calories, but if the real TDEE for a prolactinoma-sufferer is 1200-1500 cals, then it is dreadfully difficult.
Ok, he is NO help.

Good news
Some folk with very low TDEEs have found 5:2 helps them live a more normal (but still restricted) life on NFDs, rather than daily calorie restiction.
So, you are on the right program.

Important
-Your TDEE with prolactinoma may be much lower than what the calculators say. You may need to experiment to find what level you need on NFDs.
-Try 5:2 first, so at least you get used to fasting. However, if you find you are not losing / losing too slowly, then try ADF / EOF for 2-3 weeks.

  • Some sufferers, who want to avoid the drugs, have found their prolactinoma symtoms were helped by fasting and by giving up caffeine, i.e. in coffee, cola (so have the caffeine-free versions)
DorisAllTheDay · 21/02/2014 12:18

Boleh, that's wonderful news. Do you have a calorie-free celebration planned? I think these markers should be rewarded.

(((( wombles )))) We definitely need a bingers anonymous helpline. In the meantime we'll have to make do with each other Smile. I do think it's a lot to do with physical addiction as well as psychological, and it makes it terribly hard to fight. Can you distract yourself at all? Has posting to this thread helped? I know when I was in the throes of my five-day binge last week I hid from the thread, and coming back on Thursday was the beginning of me getting back on track. So it's a good sign that you've posted, I think. Would it help to 'fess up about what triggered the binge (if anything) and what you've eaten, and do some thinking aloud about how you're going to get through the rest of the day? I don't have much more internet time today but I'll come back and check in a little while.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 21/02/2014 12:27

I binged too. I don't feel guilty tho because I can turn it around. Maybe you should think like that??? I've had 2 big packets of love hearts one of refreshers (only think stopping me eating the fourth is that I'm saving them for DD) and a king size twix... Which I blame you guys for!!! Wink

I don't like this dr Phil! But he's not wrong Hmm

Thigh toner was £6. Maybe I'll use it... Tomorrow!

BigChocFrenzy · 21/02/2014 12:29

Eat Maybe your thyroid level or another parameter is within "normal" bounds, but not for your particular EatRiskier design of bod.

I'm sure other folk have nagged you to eat more calorie dense foods, but in your case, you can also break some of the normal eating rules.

So as well as the healthy yums:

  • avocado and chicken / salmon on bagels
  • cheese fondue or melted on toast
  • taramasalat or hummus with pita bread
  • peanut butter, almond butter, nutella on toast or spoon from the jar
  • any nuts or seeds
  • olive oil on salads
  • butter in potato

Also indulge:

  • the coffee shop cappucino / drinking choc with cream and choc / latte etc
  • they even have some with a scoop of ice cream at the bottom
  • have a big cookie, muffin, donut, cheesecake etc with it.
  • I averaged 2,000 cal per coffee shop visit in my bad old days !
  • chips, especially battered fish and chips
  • milk chocolate with / without filling
  • ice cream with choc sauce and sprinkles, YUM !

Nobody else should eat like this except as a treat - this is to GAIN

MetellaEstMater · 21/02/2014 12:30

Congratulations boleh!

Second fast day went okay but I rush is seen diablo's thoughts on wine before a FD before Wednesday night as a couple made yesterday morning tricky. Mini LSV though as went to the baby cinema to see Dallas Buyers' Club (love mat leave!) and didn't have a snack - possibly a cinema first as I vividly remember having mint Poppets when my granny took me on my first cinema trip as a child!

BigChocFrenzy · 21/02/2014 12:34

Boleh Great SV. Well done !
Flowers Grin ^^

Well done, Bat. Early days, but sounds like you are making good progress too.

womblesofwestminster · 21/02/2014 12:41

Thanks for the non-judgemental support guys. If I told DH how I feel after I binge, he would look at me like this Hmm and say "erm... well don't do it then".

I know I talk myself into binging

Yes! I do this :( Here's what goes through my head an hour before a binge:

Go-on, treat yourself. You've been good all day.
You really want those chocolate digestives. They are your favourite after all.
You're fasting tomorrow so it won't matter.
Maybe just have one, so you've had a taste.
This porridge just isn't giving you the same high is it? Go-on, have the digestives.
They're just 5 foot away. Go-on.
You won't be able to eat them tomorrow because it's a fast day. This is your last chance!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 21/02/2014 12:50

Wombles, it's like you're in my head! I'll support you through it if u want? We can help each other Grin

DorisAllTheDay · 21/02/2014 13:07

wombles, as someone who still hasn't cracked the binging habit but is working very hard at it, one of the things that works for me sometimes is to try to replace the usual script with a different one. My 'default' script is rather similar to yours, and it's not so much talking myself into binging as giving myself permission - or maybe finding a way to rationalise the monster within. Here's what I try to replace it with:

'That packet of chocolate digestives is not a treat, it's punishment. You know quite well that if you buy it/open it you will eat the entire packet and then go on to the bagels and buns. Stop thinking about how nice it will be to eat them, and think about how crap you are going to feel afterwards. Don't do it - at least, don't do it now. Just get through the rest of the day without doing it, and let tomorrow take care of itself. There is not about to be a massive food shortage - chocolate digestives will continue to be available. You are not going to go seriously hungry. Walk away. You haven't bought them/opened them yet. Go on, walk away, and you will feel fantastic.'

It's now become a habit that this goes through my head along with the default script. It doesn't work all the time (witness last week, and the whole of December) but if the monster within isn't completely out of control it helps me to subdue it.

If your experience is that you talk yourself into binging, then if you work hard at it you can probably talk yourself out of it as well. I'm not saying it's easy - I know better than anyone that it isn't - but you can probably do it at least some of the time. Would it help to write down a 'talk myself out of it' script and work on saying it when you're not about to binge, as practice? I did that at first, to try to internalise it.

I won't be online much this weekend (DD1 is visiting with new partner, I'm about to go and meet them at the station) but I'll be thinking of you.

Good luck all fasters, and see you soon.

postmanpatscat · 21/02/2014 13:24

Well done losers eatriskier and emma and boleh and sorry if I've missed anyone.

Today is my 400th day of logging in to MFP (don't log food any more, just exercise) and my one year anniversary of 5:2. I would say that I feel great, except that I had a hysteroscopy and polypectomy this morning and now it's like period pains with copious amounts of wind thrown in for good measure! Apart from that, I'm doing great Grin. DP had a benign tumour removed from his wrist yesterday so we're a healthy pair today. He keeps looking daggers at me when I call him Keith Lemon Smile.

So, I am 25lbs (ish) lighter, staying mostly within my comfort zone (around 8st 2 - 8st 4) and have not seen my original target weight of 8st 10 since the day I reached it 9 months ago. 5:2 has been absolutely ideal for me. I gained a few pounds on an all-inclusive week (I blame the strawberry milkshakes and mango juice as we skipped lunch AND ran for an hour every day) but it was so easy to lose it again. Since the autumn I have fasted because I want to, or because a couple of pounds have crept on. I'm eating better, my self-control is much better, I am running up to 20km at a time and usually 3-4 times a week. I can't wait for the weather to improve so I can get out of the gym and back on the pavements.

I am a size 8 (6 in Next, but that's their fault, nothing to do with my shape or size) instead of a tight size 12 and I have a whole new wardrobe of skinny jeans and slightly shorter skirts. I wear my bikini with pride (especially when lying flat) and feel much more confident.

DP has also lost loads (not 5:2), going from just over 16st to about 12st 10. We hope that we have secured long, happy and healthy futures together as we didn't meet until we were 42 and 46.

I would say that I'm a 5:2 evangelist, but many people still don't get it, they just look at you like you're mad. Mad or not, I'm still a walking advertisement for it anyway!

Breadandwine · 21/02/2014 13:34

That's what I love about this thread - it's completely non-judgemental! Flowers

Couple of things:
If you feel hungry, and you nibble something sweet - it will NOT assuage your hunger. Rather it will awaken the hunger monster within, and you'll feel MORE hungry!
However, if you have something savoury - some carrot sticks, celery, even a small mushroom; or a hot drink - miso, bouillon - even water; this will carry you over, and your hunger will abate.
A timer of some sort is useful. Have a piece of cake, as I've just done, then set the timer for 20 minutes, and you can refuse a 2nd piece.
Biscuits. Take a biscuit, by all means, then toss the packet up on top of a high cupboard. Or only have a biscuit if you're on the way out - and then don't eat it until you're halfway down the street.

I used to be a biscuit muncher of some repute - once I found out that ginger biscuits were generally vegan there was no stopping me! And Oaties (from Lidl) are also vegan. I used to make chocolate biscuits by melting dark chocolate and spreading it over the Oaties. 1 square to 3 biscuits. Stick the first one in the freezer and the chocolate is solid by the time the other biscuits go in.Grin

But, I've had an opened packet of ginger biscuits in the cupboard since before Christmas. And an unopened packet of Oaties has been there for ages as well.

This WOL has definitely reset my appetite - a biscuit these days is a rare treat.

Confession time:
Last night I fell off my vegan high horse after a fairly traumatic, flood-affected, rain-sodden couple of hours on the M3/M25. On the way home I stopped for some LPG and found myself in possession of a Kit Kat - admittedly 70% chocolate and Fair Trade - but it wasn't vegan, and I don't buy Nestle products. Angry

But I've forgiven myself - and I did enjoy it!

KateBeckett · 21/02/2014 13:38

Wow postmanpatscat what an inspirational post!

Well I didn't eat my banana, only just having something now - a 100 cal ainsley harriott cup a soup (cauliflower cheese - satisfying my inner cheese monster!)

I am looking forward to being able to have a bigger portion tonight - smoked salmon, scrambled egg an mushroom planned. May even treat used to a slice of toad depending on calories.

It is definitely feeling easier today. I think evaluate I've waited longer to eat and haven't had anything solid yet.

I can be a binger aswell, especially with Nutella straight out of the jar Blush I like the idea of a script to talk myself down, will have to give that a try!
