Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Tips and Links: Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
Inspirational: eatriskiers thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Hello to everyone. I have watched and learnt (well, lurked) for about 7 months and thanks to you all have managed to fine tune a WOL that has enabled me to lose weight, keep it off so far, and more importantly for me not stress, and no guilt when munching a wide range of goodies that previously would have me hyperventilating with worry!
I saw a write-up in a weekend newspaper magazine a year ago, and thought 'that looks interesting, think i could do that'. I dread to weigh myself as i get totally obsessed, so decided not to.

A year later, I am down about 2 dress sizes, cope with fast days and inspired other members of the family with some happy results!
Thank you all, there are some of you who really inspire me, and I have joined to thank you, to lose some more, and then to maintain
cheers

BigChocFrenzy · 09/02/2014 11:34

Betsy Worked for me without lb penalty.
After 3 NFDs followed by 2 Frenzy days, missing an FD and 3 days exercise, I am exactly 9 stone. Strangely, I am usually that only after the 1st NFD. So, if anything, I have lost a lb
Hmm

THank you for the FB invite, you probably won't get many takers from here though because we like to stay imaginary on this thread!
A few of us know who each other are, but generally its nice to have the rants anonymous Grin

poppy welcome to the mad house Smile

Lilyjo Happy Birthday

and I hope that the sunshine is helping people to feel better.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/02/2014 13:40

FD tactic: In future, if any FDer finds themselves battling hunger, they might find it helpful to consider Megrim's sardine, peanut butter & mint jelly sandwich. That should be the only allowed extra food.

Slightly off-topic but I'm busy plotting skin treatments involving manuka honey, lanolin and my favourite oil blend. I will report back (when I've bought some manuka!)

I'll be testing them on my zitty nose, dry winter skin and usually-verging-on-being-chapped lips.

BetsyBell · 09/02/2014 14:11

I'll throw some aloe vera into that mix too!

Not2bObvious · 09/02/2014 17:55

I'm keep feeling like I've wandered onto a pooh bear fetish thread! All this talk of smothering oneself in honey.... Makes me wish I could stomach it! It's truly amazing the restorative powers, filing the info in my "stuff learnt from t'internet" that I generally have to pretend I read in a magazine otherwise dh does eyeroll about my virtual world.
Well 4'ish days of 16:8 (slightly dodgy morning in the cinema with a handful of popcorn/jellies, so more a 14:10 today) Beginning to feel back in control but a bit dismayed at how hard it is to keep within cals. Went to gbc and had a bun less 4oz burger, a few of the kids chips (genuine few)half of half a discarded burger bun- my own child's, not random stranger leftovers! And I still reckon it was around 500 cals according to mfp. Nearly a 1/3 of my daily nfd allowance and it still wasn't a decent feckin burger! On the plus side I'm about 4 pounds lighter than my freak out fright WI on Thursday morning. I have an FD tomorrow, lunch plated and ready, dinner still tbd. It's going to be a good week, it has to be! I can't go backwards after 9 bloody months.
Thanks to Ernest for the fitbit info, defo think I'll invest, I need things to encourage me from time to time and I'm also dying to know cals burned for JM ANC my new addiction - Billy BlanksGrin Envious of Betsy with her Taekwondo class, nothing like that round my way. Just gotta kick my way around the sitting room as the kids snigger at me

Chocupid · 09/02/2014 19:44

Finally watched the horizon fat v's sugar last night,
And I'm a bit confused as they found that exercising without sugar (carbs) tells your body to burn muscle for energy... Is that right? And if so where does that leave us who exercise on an empty stomach ie mornings or FD's.... Confused

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 09/02/2014 19:52

God, I want something... On a FD and need something sweet , DP has a chocolate lovetub in the fridge, talk me out of it?!

TalkinPeace · 09/02/2014 19:57

Chocupid
Boring messages like "everything in moderation" do not make good TV Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 09/02/2014 20:24

Chocupid The Horizon twins did their 2 extreme diets for several weeks (10 or 12, I think) before their fitness tests.
Also, the no-sugar diet was almost no-carb, much more extreme than Atkins. Even those who combine 5:2 with some days low carb do not go to the ridiculous Horizon extremes.

When we do fasted training on 5:2 / IF it is at worst after a single FD, so the body still has sufficient fuel.
I train intensively, sometimes fasted and I think my photos show my muscles have not dissolved.

Thankyou very much for thé birthday wishes. I really appreciate your kind thoughts. Grin
Went to neighbours for crepe as planned - but I did go a bit mad- chocolate , apricot jam and all.

Now it's time for a proper meal before FD tomorrow. I'm going to try and come in the right side of my TDEE today. But, it'll be only just !

LilyJoAndMe · 09/02/2014 20:47

Not2 - Lol at your kids sniggering as you kick your way around sitting room. Tomorrow am my DH will be side stepping past me as I jump around our living room with pink face and stripey pyjamas doing my exercise as he leaves for work - wisely without comment or sniggering -

LilyJoAndMe · 09/02/2014 20:51

Badger - think of the jeans, the shorts in the summer, not to mention the bikinis Smile.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/02/2014 21:54

Not2b Shame about no TaeKwondo. Maybe you could try a Taebo DVD ?
Exercise could help you lose weight, but only if you do NOT eat back your exercise calories

Lilyjo, I am glad you had a good birthday. Do you live in the Southern Hemisphere? A couple of comments you have made make me suspect it may be so.

For those of you who have a fitbit, I would like to get one and just had a quick look on ebay. Do you have a wrist band or a thing to clip somewhere? Do you have to have an i-phone too? (Sorry - total Ludite here). I would really like to know how many steps I am doing at work. I feel like I am very active (I am a teacher) but don't really know.

I spent the morning in the garden yesterday and came back in totally worn out, dripping sweat and puffing. It seems a much better workout than my swimming a km. I am actually a bit sore today too, which means it must have worked some muscles Grin And the bonus is that I've planted more vege for us to eat.

I hope the gardening might have sweated away some of the excesses of the weekend. Even after blowing out on Saturday, I still couldn't convince myself to stay away from the key lime pie and had another slice yesterday. You know, it really was worth the 460 calories. Just so creamy and tangy, with that crunchy sweet buttery base....I am glad it is all finished now. Phew!

tiggermummy70 · 09/02/2014 23:53

I have fitbit one which I wear in same place as my ultra. tucked into centre of my bra next to under wire!

works really well rarely managed to dislodge from the caverns of my cleavage Grin

LilyJoAndMe · 10/02/2014 06:40

Hihi with the fitbit in the cleavage !

Here no fitbit. Just little old me on JM in my front room. Onwards into my FD. Thinking about all others on FDs.
[ waves to all ].

Hi Hopefulgum. Great to be out in the garden and doing keep fit too!
Nope, not in Southern hemisphere. I live in France. Soon it'll start getting nicer weather. But right now it's pretty rainy ! Grin

Hope all sickly people are on the mend now. Take care all.

bishboschone · 10/02/2014 07:26

2 weeks today and I'm 7 pounds down.. So I'm pleased with that. Fd today .

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 10/02/2014 07:59

LilyJo thank you for the motivation, I held out and didn't touch it! Although I'm not sure how thin I get, that wearing shorts/bikinis will ever be possible, I'm stretch marked all over!

postmanpatscat · 10/02/2014 08:07

Well done bish

Another fitbit user here, I love mine and wear it on my waistband unless I'm wearing a dress. Have been known to attach it to my knickers when there seemed to be nowhere else to put it out of sight!

Fasting today, who's with me? I've just crept outside my target range, DP is away so I am eating crap but going to the gym more and the two are obviously not balancing each other out! Kids were baking rocky road, shortbread and scones over the weekend, that didn't help, and more cake at a friend's house yesterday too Blush
