Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

What is a BFP please ?
It's a Big Fat Positive from POAS Grin ... So congratulations DinoSnores! Flowers

LilyJoAndMe · 31/01/2014 19:07

Aha - I went and looked up POAS- You Monkey Errol.
But contrats to Dino Grin.

zedzedzed · 31/01/2014 19:43

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! Dino's got a BFP!!!! Huzzah!

Seeya back here when the time is right, healthy, happy munching to you meantime! XXX

NFD roast chicken dinner, skin on and delicious but all weighed so I don't lose track...I was really, really tempted to finish all the honey, onion, chilli and fennel roasted baby potatoes and whole garlic cloves...so good...but the olive oil and my planned pud would tip me up to close to my TDEE and that'd be the 2nd close shave this week...so I've had only 2 extra wee tatties and I've stopped. YAY!

Am having my planned drinkie now while deciding what to do with all the leftovers we are accumulating these days.

Well done to all (mental) Friday Fasters, easy does it my NFD compadres...we can also have it tomorrow too...when we're not full and there's a whole day's TDEE to fill.

MazzleDazzle · 31/01/2014 20:22

Congrats Dino! flowers. Hope all goes well.

zed those potatoes sound amazing!

TalkinPeace · 31/01/2014 20:22

Dinosnores
Before you give up fasting and exercise, bear in mind that the fitter and stronger you can be at delivery, the easier it will go.
There is good evidence now that it can be beneficial, and a big trial is underway
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-west-wales-20982641

if you can keep your weight stable and your health up, all will be well
(I did bodypump and pilates till overdue with DC2 and my cousins managed to put on minimal weight ...)
BUT
see what your quack says too Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 20:25

LillyJo I wrote about avoiding osteoporosis in the OP on the 52ExerciseThread

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 20:27

Flowers to DinoSnores !!
She's the 2nd recently. Maybe we should put a link to our 52 thread on the ttc thread
Hmm

BsshBossh · 31/01/2014 20:38

Woooohooo Dino! Many congratulations Thanks

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 20:39

I've closed the kitchen on this FD.
You're right, Tip, Friday is sometimes a difficult day; I actually felt hungry all day and then everybody demanding results before the weekend gave me a splitting headache.
However, Satan's zero-cal grated bollock fluff pulled me through
Smile >
Friday is my training rest day, so I'm trying to make it a regular FD.

Mondays are my strict low carb shake FD, so I allow myself some leeway on the 2nd FD if I need it. Today was 650, which is ok with my high TDEE.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 31/01/2014 20:41

Shock congratulations to dino I spent a lot of time on the conception boards last year. Really pleased for you.

eat my dd had a regression on the old potty training front. Similar to yours poo was fine but not so good with wee. I kept any fuss at accidents to a minimum and quite literally made a song and dance of it whenever she went to to loo and had dry knickers. She's pretty much cracked it now but it took a while.

My favourite seeing incident was when driving back from the supermarket

Dd "I need a wee"
Me "ok I'll pull over in one minute"
Dd "it's ok I'm pretending my car seat is a toliet" Angry

TalkinPeace · 31/01/2014 20:45

Bigchoc you're not a mum so a good "observer"
but I think that the track record for women losing weight / getting pregnant on thses threads is pretty darned astounding
which may go to show that making the body "work" on food may give it a kick in lots of ways

and it may well be that keeping going through pregnancy will be OK
I'm a gym bunny - all of the instrucors teach to 8 months plus and those of us known at the gym are allowed to keep working out right through ... a model frind did spin till overdue and was back on photoshoots within 9 weeks ....

Megrim · 31/01/2014 20:48

zed can you come round to my house and cook tea please? Your dinners sound waaaaaay better than mine.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2014 20:55

Probably not a good idea to do fasting if you're prone to hyperemesis though.

zedzedzed · 31/01/2014 21:02

Mmmm mazzle they're grrrrreat! Slightly less fat/cals than regular roasties as you only drizzle with the olive oil/honey/chilli/salt/fennel seeds, so they crisp up and the onions and bashed garlic cloves go all caramel-y and they're not sitting in an inch of goose fat/sunflower oil. Yum.

Disappointed with my bought Gu vanilla cheesecake, 300cals of blah. I wonder if I could make a yummy one for less...

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 21:07

Toffee Any ideas on improving the cheesecake for Zed ?

Megrim · 31/01/2014 21:09

Did you see the Horizon programme on Fat vs Sugar? Cheesecake, being half fat and half sugar, is the work of the devil and should be avoided at all costs. Even worse than diet fizzy pop.

zedzedzed · 31/01/2014 21:11

Grin thanks megrim but I guess that's how I ended up here! Not junk food, just waaaaaay too much of a good thing!

postmanpatscat · 31/01/2014 21:11

Well done all on SVs and NSVs, more proof (as if we needed it) that 5:2 works. A colleague asked me today 'Are you still doing your diet?" and I said I haven't fasted in three weeks and I ate 12 jaffa cakes last night but I'm still staying within a couple of pounds of my new 'normal' weight and have been for the last six months. Only three weeks now til my 5:2 anniversary!

Massive congrats to dino, hope all goes well for you. Such an exciting time!

zedzedzed · 31/01/2014 21:14

megrim Satan is my pal and he says I can have the cake AND eat it too...but only tomorrow...and only if I put it in to MFP and stay under my TDEE! Satan's a bugger.

TalkinPeace · 31/01/2014 21:17

a dear swimming friend of mine had an unexpected breast biopsy this week after a scan.
they told her to keep exercising and stay with fasting even as chemo kicks in
nuff said

zedzedzed · 31/01/2014 21:18

Good idea BCF 8tofffe* will have good cheesecake up her sleevies. But none of that low fat cheese pap; that's not my bag...man. Full fat yumminess but in tiny portions as I'd rather have a little of the good stuff than a mountain of crud these days.

Off to google the cals in mascarpone and digestives.

zedzedzed · 31/01/2014 21:20

ooops, toffee

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 21:22

I do a disgracefully lazy no-bake no-base cheesecake:

  • 175g tub of 5% fat plain Philly
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice (from a bottle, of course !)
  • 1/2 teasp pure vanilla powder
  • 3 tbsp Splenda ^^

I just bung all the ingredients in a jug and mix it all up with a stick mixer.

-optionally, sprinkle over 3 tbsp of ground almonds plus 1/2 teasp cinammon powder for a topping.

Put in fridge for 30 mins
Then eat directly out of the jug, or use it as pancake filling

Cancer Treatment and Fasting
Fasting is being increasingly investigated to help people deal with chemo side effects, or even to boost the working of chemo or other cancer medications:
