Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Sorry TDEE not TFEE.

felttippens · 30/01/2014 23:05

Hi can I join in? Started today !

Managed nothing to eat until 5:30pm but drank water And tea with skimmed milk

Was so starving by the time I ate think I overdid the cals a bit - adds upto 650 cals

Is that terrible for first FD? Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 30/01/2014 23:08

I've had 3 delicious NFDs, around TDEE. I'm quite looking forward to my next FD, which shall be either tomorrow or Saturday.
This WOL is so flexible Smile
Tomorrow, I will have zero cals up to 5 pm, then decide if I want early supper in a superb restaurant near work. if so, Saturday will be my FD.

Good luck to any FDers tomorrow

BigChocFrenzy · 30/01/2014 23:10

Well done, Treading, that's an excellent start. Holding out until supper is our recommended plan. We also think there are health benefits in that long fasting period.

felttippens · 30/01/2014 23:15

I've got mfp set to 1876 for my tdee does that sound about right? I'm 5ft 6 and 12st 13

woodchuck · 30/01/2014 23:23

Thanks cheshire. MFP has set my TDEE at 1700 to maintain my weight. I never go past this (even last Saturday when I had dinner out and wine). Most NFDs my intake is 1400-1500.

I am sending dh out for some new scales that might be more accurate and will also measure body fat (a bad workman always blames his tools!)

DorisAllTheDay · 31/01/2014 00:13

Mazzle, I can't believe you sat in a chippy watching your kids eat and stuck to the black coffee. I call that a pretty impressive NSV. Woodchuck, that must feel pretty rubbish. I haven't been doing this for long enough to have any words of wisdom, but hopefully one of the longer-termers will be able to help. Hopeful, you sound like you're doing really well, congratulations. And congratulations, Jobyloo, Felix and Errol and all other fasters for making it through your FD. Toffee, I come from a family which messed up my eating no end - my mother was a compulsive and secret eater, and it was a constant struggle to work at not passing on my hang-ups to my two DDs (now in their 20s). I think it sounds like you are doing the most fantastic job, getting your children to love and feel relaxed about food. I know just how hard that is for those of us for whom food is an issue. You rock!

My day ended better than it began. After the bagel situation I thought I was headed for a day of high-cal, high-carb grazing. But I got myself back on track, and also walked all the way home (4 miles) instead of getting the bus halfway which is what I usually do. And to cap it all, when I entered today's food into MFP I found I'd overestimated my calorie intake - and when I add in the extra walking calories I've come in about 300 calories under TDEE, which I'm happy with. Another FD tomorrow, and hopefully that will see off the excesses of the first part of the week.

Peplum41 · 31/01/2014 00:42

Hi baloosticka your poor little boy, must've been really ill, and a big worry for you. Glad he's better. Must be a tough chap fighting off malaria and typhoid. How is your 5:2 ing these days?

Those with scales that are going up and down. They do, bouncing scales used to be a frequent topic on these threads. What I've noticed is the lowest number you want to see soon becomes the higher number you can't wait to see the back of. Patience my friends. Ride the bounces out into smaller clothing.

BsshBossh · 31/01/2014 04:52

Toffee your DC sound like they eat a lot more healthier than most kids their age. That's quite an achievement. Well done!

zedzedzed · 31/01/2014 08:00

Morning all!

NFD here...planning roast chicken and roast tatties with greens and a wee pud tonight, and maybe even a drink!

Think I will keep it light the rest of today as my last NFD was too close to my (huge) TDEE for comfort and I'm working on making sure I've always got at least a 7000cal deficit per wk:
(2x 500cal FDs plus 4xNFDs at 10-20% under TDEE...plus 1 splurgey day)

I'm hoping this deficit will keep a steady (albeit theoretical) 2lbs dropping, week on week.

Have had to move bra fastening in another one, a very crap NSV as it's arse fat we want rid of; the boobs were good as they were thanks!

Good luck all you crazy Friday fasters, NFD munchers; enjoy and keep it real over the weekend...I look at the maths when I feel all splurgy... boring but it helps me to keep the faith.

Southeastdweller · 31/01/2014 08:15

mazzle I'm seriously impressed with that you sat in the chippy yesterday just supping on black coffee whilst your kids ate those goodies in front of you. Do you think you would have been able to do that pre-5:2?

eatriskier How are you feeling today?

Bssh Glad the both of you are getting better. It's lovely having someone to take care of you isn't it. By the way, there's a new cake shop opening in Marylebone high street today that I thought you'd be interested in. Here

tiggermummy70 · 31/01/2014 08:19

Morning everyone,

Glad you were all talking about baking yesterday it reminded me I was supposed to be making a cake for my boss. 50 today, we've toned down our plans as he lost his mum suddenly at beginning of month and he's not really celebrating. Nice looking coffee sponge with a little coffee icing. Smile

Glad to say my numbers are going down. Very close to getting below 40% body fat and the amount to go to reach my target is finally less than I have to loose. Still another 3 weeks Monday until I can start to switch on to 5:2 properly. Sad
Have a good day 5:2ers

zedzedzed · 31/01/2014 08:28

Well done tiger, that must be great, less to go than has gone, I can't wait for that! Sorry tiger I missed why you're waiting to do 5:2, was it BF a little one or are you doing 4:3 or something?

Lilliput · 31/01/2014 08:53

Another pound off and squeezed myself into size 10 jeans.

Jobyloo · 31/01/2014 08:55

Morning all
NFD here just need to hold it together over the weekend. zzz nice tip about keeping the maths focus. peplum thanks for that about the bouncing scales, it's good to know. I now have officially switched to weekly weighing after 2nd FD of the week..OMG have had to put the scales on top of the wardrobe because I can't trust myself not to hop on and off all the bloody time. This will be a hard habit to break but I just don't want to be dictated to by numbers.

hopeful that's 2 great NSV's! Just shows the health benefits of fasting as well as letting the body do it's repair work! Know what you mean about feeling slimmer although the scales have shown minimal movement for the last 2 weeks. Lost 0.25lb last week and 0.75lb this week but happy with 9lbs in total since NYD.

Tiger well done, what a great place to be.

Have a fab day all, off to bake a banana loaf Cake

Jobyloo · 31/01/2014 09:07

Ooh nice one Lilli would love to get into size 10's Wink

Treading great result for your first FD. It does get easier and I for one thought I would be the last one to say that!

woodchuck stick with it a bit longer! Maybe be scales will help, but what about having a splurge day to throw your body off track and give it a shake up a bit. I'm new to this so maybe not the best person to comment, but have seen posts on here where peeps haven't been losing as quickly if they haven't eaten most of their TDEE. I guess everyone's different, try not to get too down which I know is easier said than done. The bouncing numbers on the scales is one of the reasons I've gone for weekly weighing from now on.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2014 09:10

weekly weight check, 58.9 so half a kilo off from last week which is perfect. Smile TBH I'd be a bit worried if it was more given that I'm small and also trying to increase muscle. DH has lost over half a stone at this point too - he's doing calorie counting and (I think) two days lower but not really fasting, I think that may be best for him given the number of tablets he has to take. He's also doing well with the gym - he watched something about whether people are exercise responders and reckons he is which helps the motivation. Smile

Those of you quoting fat % - how are you measuring this? A long time ago DH got a contraption but I wasn't too convinced by it... maybe should check if its still lurking somewhere because I'd be interested to know.

treading - brilliant first FD!

BsshBossh · 31/01/2014 09:18

Morning all. I've lost 3.2 lbs this week but as I've been ill and generally not eating much I'm not going to record my loss. Basically today I'm 2.4 lbs below goal weight (GW = 125 lbs; CW = 122.6 lbs) but won't declare "Goal!" until I've recovered and I'm eating normally again. I might not fast next week at all just to get my eating back to normal.

BsshBossh · 31/01/2014 09:20

Southeast thanks for the heads up on the new Marylebone cake shop. It all looks heavenly! Can't wait to sample their goodies.

Well done today's losers.

MazzleDazzle · 31/01/2014 09:43

No, SouthEast, I would have never have managed it before 5:2. I think that knowing I can have it tomorrow makes things so much easier. Likewise, if I go overboard I know I can make up for it on my next FD.

I don't worry about food, I don't binge. Everything just feels so much easier! I've also been using Paul McKenna's 'Freedom From Emotional Eating' CD & DVD, though not religiously.

In my freezer just now I have two lots of baking. I have never frozen anything I've ever baked in my life. Words cannot get across how enormous an achievement this is for me! Even as a child I would think nothing of baking a cake and eating the whole lot Blush.

TreadingWater that does sound right. I'm a similarish BMI to you and my TDEE is pretty close to that. You could try using this online calculator, which I think is more accurate than MFP. I've found that I get the best results if I...

Don't factor in exercise i.e. don't eat more cals just because you've worked out
Aim for 20% below TDEE on most NFD
On NFD skip breakfast to save some cals
Don't worry if you go over your TDEE, at the weekend say

Good luck!

MazzleDazzle · 31/01/2014 09:46

Well done everyone with NSVs and SVs who are, I am pleased to say, far too numerous to name individually! (Round of applause)

wood are you one of those people who have yoyo dieted? Apologies for asking, I've just lost track of who anyone is anymore!

bssh hope you and your DD are feeling better

Haven't got a clue what is going on with DD. She's completely regressed. Just before christmas she got a certificate from nursery as she was doing so well at toilet training and was barely having accidents at all. The last couple of weeks its almost as if she needs to be in nappies again and I have no clue what could have caused it, except she knows full well what she is doing. Its not just at home, its at MILs and Nursery too. So today I'm going back to making her sit on the loo every 30 mins or so regardless of whether she is showing signs of needing to go. Seems worse when we give her underwear, she's been dry/using the loo all morning until I gave her knickers and then she instantly wee-ed everywhere. The poo thing is a whole different world in that she wants to see what she is doing so she gets off the potty mid going. So now the potty is gone.

I had a terrible nights sleep last night due to coughing, snoring (DHs) and sweating (bloody thyroid - well we think). Don't feel like I've been hit repetitively in the face today so that's a bonus, but I do have both DC with no respite today. Ultimately I feel too tired to deal with the onslaught of weemageddon!

Megrim · 31/01/2014 10:07

Errol you can get "body analyser" bathroom scales that you can put in sex / age / height / weight and they will calculate BMI, body fat and body water levels. The cheaper versions probably aren't that accurate, the more expensive ones can also measure muscle mass - like this one.
