Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Wow! What amazing NSV and SV's! bows down

My FD yesterday was my hardest yet, I was too tired and drained from a cold bug that it ended up being a mini fast at

LilyJoAndMe · 31/01/2014 13:55

Glad to hear you're on the mend Eat.

LilyJoAndMe · 31/01/2014 13:58

Thanks for the answer BigChoc and Errol and Biscuit. It's lovely to be congratulated.

I suppose it's true that I'll need to enjoy it whilst it lasts and not get too despondant if I slow down again. Thanks for reminding me. That has been a big stumbling block for me in the past.

About the exercise , I am really pleased as well to be able to see muscles developing under my flab. One of the things that I want to work towards too is halting osteoporosis.

As a youngster I watched on as one of my grandparents just became more and more shrivelled up and broke more and more bones as she grew older. I don't want anything like this to happen to me and that's one of the big reasons I'm exercising.

I've read lots of stuff on your exercise thread BCF and I believe that I need to work gradually to doing more and more impact exercises to help my bones. Is that right ?

Believing it so , I'm carefully moving towards that because I'm having to be careful about my knees.

I'll hunt down TIP's advice on the January shred thread about knees Errol- thanks for the suggestion.

LilyJoAndMe · 31/01/2014 13:59

Go for it on Sunday Biscuits Smile.

womblesofwestminster · 31/01/2014 14:04

I'm fasting today. Finding it very hard though, as AF is due. Drinking plenty of flavoured water.

LilyJoAndMe · 31/01/2014 14:32

You can do it Womble Smile.
Keep drinking and busy - and remember 'you can have it tomorrow '. Good Luck.

Eatriskier · 31/01/2014 14:33

Just after I posted last dh called and said he would get me some chocolate from charbonel et Walker on his way home. This would be mega Grin inducing if it weren't for the fact that ds quietly nipped behind me, got onto the sofa, grabbed my coffee and poured it into my mac book. I am so Angry at myself for not keeping my eye on the ball and dh because he let's the kids play on the sofa so they think the nearby shelves are full of toys for them. Very grateful the coffee was cold as otherwise the damage to ds's legs would have been bad, which has makes me more Angry Angry Angry Angry at myself.

womblesofwestminster · 31/01/2014 14:42

Thanks LilyJoAndMe Damn hormones. Do you find that you're extra hungry when your period is due? I feel intense hunger for like - a week before my period arrives. Grrrrr

MazzleDazzle · 31/01/2014 15:01

Eat, just smile and say "Never mind. We all have accidents sometimes!", which is true! Sometimes kids take a step back in their progress, but they all get there in the end. Putting her on the potty every 30 mins if she's happy enough to go, sounds like a great idea. I know its hard, but try not to upset yourself over it, or upset her...this too shall pass!

So, after 4 weeks of my new exercise regime, I have just had my body analysed at my gym. I have increased my muscle mass, increased my body water percentage, lowered my body fat and lost 30cm from my body and just under 10lb in weight! In four weeks! I am delighted. Fitness test is on Monday as there was no time for it today. Really looking forward to doing it as I know I've improved. Anyone struggling to shift the pounds through eating alone, should look at increasing or modifying their exercise, if they are able to...I lost double the weight I did the previous month, when I did no exercise other than walking.

Wombles, snap! 7 days of ravenous hunger and nothing satisfies me!

womblesofwestminster · 31/01/2014 15:36

Still muddling along on raspberry water and diet pepsi.

How are you guys doing? (if fasting today).

Eatriskier · 31/01/2014 15:55

errol I'm glad I don't have a dog now. That must have been awful

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2014 16:13

Eat - just glad it wasn't a bigger dog! And at that stage I was working full-time from home, we had a nanny who was absolutely brilliant at clearing up after both the miscreants. And TBF on the dog, he was great at cleaning up under the high chair/tea-table and once a small no2 accident.

Lily, what I've read about exercise and osteo suggests:
•Strength training exercises
•Weight-bearing aerobic activities
•Flexibility exercises
•Stability and balance exercises

(I think the latter may be particularly relevant if you already have weak bones for obvious reasons). The 'weight bearing' can include impact exercise but I'm not sure if it's necessary or better than no-impact weight bearing (eg using an elliptical trainer).

DinoSnores · 31/01/2014 16:25

Just wanted to report in as I have paused the 5:2 fasting at the moment. I got a BFP last week so won't fast by choice - although once my usual hyperemesis starts, I'll be fasting by default as I try to force food down despite the vomiting and nausea! Will hopefully be back here this time next year if things go well...

wombles, I find hot drinks are a bit better for the hunger pangs. I would just wonder whether the artificial sweeteners in the flavoured water are stimulating your taste buds and hunger, making it a bit more difficult. Remember though, tomorrow you can have whatever you've really wanted today - and tomorrow, weirdly, you probably won't want it!

woodchuck · 31/01/2014 16:27

Thanks for your comments eatriskier and joby. I have never dieted at all before, with the exception of a bit of MFP calorie counting last year, which was more about giving me an awareness of portion size than losing weight IYSWIM.

I am so interested in the long term health benefits of this WOE I am going to continue and will hopefully see some change the longer I go. I work in health improvement and am a big believer in prevention rather than reaction. My weight has been slowly creeping up a couple of pounds each year. I don't want to be taken by surprise that I am suddenly 40 and significantly overweight with all of the associated health problems, or as those foxy doctors on the Horizon Fat VS Sugar show earlier this week described it "sleepwalking into obesity".

Interesting that there is an argument for making sure I fill out my TDEE on non-fast days to make my FD more effective. Does anyone else do this? How do you find it?

I have just had half a Twirl in celebration Grin

womblesofwestminster · 31/01/2014 16:52

DinoSnores you're scientifically correct of course, but I like how few cals there is in diet pepsi. I also like that it makes me feel bloated, giving the illusion of having consumed something.

DorisAllTheDay · 31/01/2014 16:54

Hi wombles. I'm fasting today and it's one of my hardest so far. I've already had close to 200 calories, and I'm planning to try Toffee's savoury rice for tea tonight, so I'll be a little over 500 so long as I don't give in and have anything else. I'm trying not to have my evening meal before 6.00 at the earliest, and nearer to 7.00 if I can manage it. 6.00 still feels like a loooooong way away. I'm going to make another cup of tea now with the tiniest splash of milk in it. Someone upthread suggested measuring out however many calories-worth of milk you want as your daily allowance at the start of the day and then not exceeding it, and that's what I've been doing. I reckon I've got enough for another three cups, four if I'm really sparing with the milk.

woodchuck, I've been 'banking' calories and trying not to eat my full TDEE every NFD to lose weight faster/have the occasional blow-out. I've not been massively under, but about 200 or 300 calories when I can manage it. Not sure if this is a good thing or not - any advice, anyone?

Mazzle, those are amazing results. 30cm lost in four weeks is stunning. Can you explain to me the significance of an increase in body water percentage? Good luck with the fitness test - it sounds like you can expect some more good news on Monday.

womblesofwestminster · 31/01/2014 17:34

I've had nothing so far and I can feel the keytones on my tongue. Going to have a low GI beef stew for supper and then have an early night.

How do you guys find sleep on a fast day?

DorisAllTheDay · 31/01/2014 17:45

I slept really badly after my first few FDs, wombles - it was very annoying because I wanted nothing more than a few hours' oblivion when I couldn't think about food and being hungry. Two things have helped. First, leaving my main calorie intake until later in the day, hence trying to wait until 7.00 for tea if I possibly can. Second, going for a really long walk as late as possible in the evening. Someone explained upthread that your body goes into hunter-readiness mode when you're hungry - you get super-alert so that when the gazelle goes bounding by you're on hand to net it and eat it! So eating later (not being so hungry at bedtime) and trying to tire myself out physically have helped.

TalkinPeace · 31/01/2014 18:10

A long day today - three hours of Local Government Pensions is enough for anybody - but the last of my overdue clients has paid his bill, tax returns are all done so now its time for Wine
I'm wondering how many Mumsnetters I'll meet tomorrow when I'm selling books Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 18:24

Just about to leave work, but you gabby talkative bunch might use up the thread before I'm online again, so ......

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@*

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 18:26

Tip When we get to 1990 messages, please fire off some quick posts to fill it up,
e.g. artificial sweeteners are Satan's grated bollocks

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2014 18:35

Mmmm, sounds a bit like devilled kidneys...oh, were you trying to put us off?Grin

Just had dinner to suit my NFD and DHs calorie-counting - 500 cals worth of salad (olive oil and balsamic dressing), tuna pan-fried in light olive oil and mostly butter, served on couscous with the pan juices poured over and topped with roasted red pepper and grilled courgette. Black pepper and lemon wedge, plus olives and capers for me. Not bad though I say it myself!

TalkinPeace · 31/01/2014 18:43

Bigchoc
DH got his Public liability renewal through this week ...
his business description was described as "Presenter and Demon"
Grin

still cannot work out how people fast on a Friday

LilyJoAndMe · 31/01/2014 18:56

Great info re osteoporosis Errol - cheers :) . By the way your dinner sounds delish.

Mazzle - excellent results there !

Woodchuck I like to eat under my TDEE some days and then go over 1 day a week - usually at the week-end.

Womble - to help me sleep well after a FD I have a herbal tea - lime or verbena- just before I fall asleep.

What is a BFP please ?

MazzleDazzle · 31/01/2014 18:58

Doris many people just aren't getting enough water, but thanks to everyone on here who reminds me to DRINK! I am now fully hydrated, hence the rise in water percentage. I'm wildly guessing here, but I think the more water we have in our bodies the easier it is to flush out all the yucky stuff, inc. excess blubber!
