Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Mazzle - well done for sitting patiently in the chippy. And also for freezing uour baking too. I love doing that with uncooked scone mixture and getting out just enough to make a few freshly baked scones at a later date. Did you get your water back on ?
Don't apologise gracehol. I appreciated reading your post when you were getting it off your chest. Personally I admire that you have the guts to get it out there instead of letting it get out of proportion in your head. Can you have a calmer day today - just a thought before you turn your back on the week as a whole ?

LilyJoAndMe · 31/01/2014 10:32

Woodchuck,
I have been doing 5:2 for a month too. At first I lost about 7lbs quickly and then I stopped. The scales started to go up too. I felt concerned about it and wrote about it on the last 5:2 thread. I even wondered if people might think I was not being honest with myself or something like that.
Anyhow, I realise that in fact I was eating loads of vegetables but my body was not eliminating them very quickly. It seemed to stock up on the fibre for a few days and, of course, that fibre weighed quite a bit.
I stuck to it and very gradually my weight's coming down. This week I've lost nearly 2lbs which has put a smile on my face Smile .

MelanieCheeks · 31/01/2014 10:33

Body fat % is notoriously very difficult to measure accurately - so even if you do get scales that give a reading (mine are the Weight Watchers ones, bought in tesco), take those numbers as a rough guide only.

I've had 2 good FDs this week, which is an improvement! Plus I've lost the few extra pounds that were hovering around since Christmas.

I was off work yesterday and I don't usuaully like fasting when at home. But while shopping (I know!) I spotted a 300g tray of prawns reduced to 75 p. At 210 cals for the whole lot, I went about making them the basis of my meals for the day. For lunch I had some on a bed of rocket with a few cherry tomatoes, and a pot of grapefruit segments in juice, with a few slivers of sushi ginger garnish. Very refreshing and tasty for about 150 cals. For dinner I made a tomato sauce and served the prawns in that over slim noodles - around 200 cals.

(I will be putting these recipes in a blog and link to that in the recipes thread)

Is Toffee coming out to play soon ?

Bumblebeejumble · 31/01/2014 10:37

Thought I was supposed to be fasting today, but realised I did Sunday and Tuesday, so no need! Will go for a tdee-20% day I think.

eatriskier can't be any help, I'm afraid, as potty training is a (gross) mystery to me. One of mine took one week, at age 2, with only 3 accidents since then (about 10 months). DS is seven, has had more accidents than his 3-y-o sister in the last 10 months. So you have my sympathy!

Baloostika · 31/01/2014 10:38

Thank u guys for the love shown. I'm ending my four weeks spiritual fast on Sunday. I'll take a break on Monday and stat my usual 5:2 routine. Good luck to all fasters and congrats to all NSV and SV recorders. Have a great weekend everybody. [Smile]

almostthereagain · 31/01/2014 11:22

eat how old is she? I can't remember if it was mine or my neice or nephew but remember a similar situation. Potty training was abandoned, went back to nappies & didn't make a fuss. Very soon, child was desperate to have big pants on & never looked back. All the stress & extra attention gained from the 'accidents' Hmm just seemed to make things worse. Good luckSmile

DorisAllTheDay · 31/01/2014 12:17

Eatriskier, try not to worry too much about DD. Development often isn't linear, and they appear to go backwards for a bit before surging forwards again. Chances are it's nothing serious - just keep on with the toilet training and give it a couple of weeks to see if she gets over this bout of curiosity. If not, it may be worth going to your GP just to check there's nothing physical.

Well done all SVs and non-SVs. grace, I know this sounds trite, but beating yourself up about not doing well is the surest way to get derailed. So yes, write this week off and start again next week. Eating too much doesn't make you a bad person - people do much, much shittier things than have a midnight snack. No need to feel bad, just get back on the wagon and have another go. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not finding this at all an easy WOE to stick to. It's hard. And if you've managed to fast until midnight you've done very well, even if you've not managed the full 36 hours every time.

Talking of which, FD today. Hours and hours to go before I can eat. Sad I think today's going to be a hard one, I've been aware of hunger pangs for the last two hours.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 12:23

Errol The Body Fat calculator on the Exercise Thread OP is pretty good (+/-3% which is probably more accurate than commercial BF scales)
The US navy use it.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 12:24

Size 10 jeans - Great NSV, Lilli !

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 12:40

Exercise thread OP also has healthy body fat % ranges at different ages.

LilyJoAndMe · 31/01/2014 12:47

Yesterday I had my second FD of the week. I stopped at just under 400cals as I just wasn't hungry - hihi .
I read about Jillan Michaels up thread. I've being doing this for about 3 weeks now and did some more this am. I'm feeling much fitter- can walk quickly up the stairs at work now whereas before Christmas I was huffing and puffing.
I need to take care of my knees right now though - I pushed myself a bit hard on that score over the last couple of days. So , instead of putting more effort into the knee stuff I'm going easier there and then really speeding up some of the cardio exercises. I'm happy with that as a solution right now.

All the best to all- especially to FDers today.

LilyJoAndMe · 31/01/2014 12:51

Really pleased - my scales are in kilos and I've just worked out that in fact I've lost 11lbs since the beginning of January Grin. And that's despite getting stuck for nearly two weeks - watching the scales dithering up and down Smile.

Eatriskier · 31/01/2014 13:05

Thanks for the tips all. DD has just turned 3. DH does sometimes have a go when she has accidents so he's been firmly told off again for that, though that always explained to me why she was more accident prone at ours than nursery and MILs but she's being just as terrible there now too. Also, quite thankfully, she's brilliant at number 2s - straight to the loo for those - its just wee that is the main issue. The 30 min schedule and no undies seems to be helping today, only one small accident but she was engrossed in a jigsaw.

Unfortunately for me DS and DD have decided on different sleep schedules so no sneaky nap time here. Thankfully its an NFD! Definitely too ill to consider Wine tonight. I must be worse than I thought Hmm

Hope fasts are going well today and well done all losers

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 13:22

11lb is excellent in a month, LilyJo Smile
Don't be disappointed if the loss slows down a bit now. With patience, you will achieve your goals in a healthy, sustainable way

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 13:24

Eat Do give yourself a rest from FDs, until you feel 100%.
Also, that weemageddon sounds a pain and must mean extra work.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2014 13:26

Lily - fantastic. And do be careful with the knees - modify/swap moves if they're causing/exacerbating problems. TiP dropped into the January Shred thread with some knee advice if you want to hunt that down.

MorrisZapp · 31/01/2014 13:28

I'm aiming to lose a stone by June! Slooooowly does it.

My DS is newly toilet trained, yay! He was 3.2 when we finally did it. We didn't bother with a potty, just used the toilet. Wait til they're ready is my mantra! Felt bloody good chucking the dreaded nappy bag in the bin.

Does it count as a NSV? :)

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2014 13:30

Eat, sympathies with the weemageddon. My DD was late getting the hang of it, and when she was at the nappies off stage and having accidents, our dog (previous model) decided that meant it was OK for him to wee in the house too - we had to get new sofa cushions!

Eatriskier · 31/01/2014 13:31

bigchoc no fast planned until monday, which will definitely be put off if I still feel rotten. though eating to TDEE may be tough as I don't really fancy much except I really want some naice chocolate. there is no naice chocolate in the house, we have chocolate but not anything that I would consider worthy enough. I may put a call into DH later and make him pick me up something.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 13:41

Eat Ideas to ramp up to TDEE:

  • Cheese or peanut butter on toast is very comforting
  • Also cheese fondue or fritters with rolls, slices of apple
  • Macaroni cheese
  • Avocado with chicken or salmon, as sandwich or salad
  • Add coconut milk, nuts to stir-fry or curry.
BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 13:42

Morris It's only an NSV if the nappies you are chucking away are your own.
Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2014 13:44

Oh, Eat, Hummus is very good, too
