The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.
Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

elrglad you're feeling a bit more positive. Here's that pasta, dunno how to link to recipe thread, sorry:

Half a packet of lean pork mince,a finely chopped small onion, 2tsp fennel seeds, salt, half tsp chilli flakes, some chopped fresh sage, squeeze of honey, 3 cloves garlic, form into balls and chill. (I've sometimes cheated with Tesco Finest pork, honey, fennel sausages chopped and sauteed as they're pretty good)

Basic red sauce (sauteed onion in 3tsp olive oil, chopped toms x3 tins, mushrooms, 1tbsp tomato puree, loads of garlic, splash of balsamic vinegar, seasalt, black pepper, bit more chilli, cook for about 30 mins, add water as it reduces. Add half a broccoli head in florets once it's off the heat.

Let cool. Wait till tomorrow and it'll be even better (and hopefully a NFD). Add pork balls (unsealed saves on oil and makes them softer) and cook for a further 20-30 mins on low heat, serve stirred through 500g spaghetti, serves 5 (850cals pp) I have just 50g pasta and a big salad so it's under 500cals pp but still a bit heavy for a FD.

Freezes (minus pasta) really well so I batch cook...plus DS loves it and I sneak in any old veggies from the bottom of the fridge).

Dontbe. Yes I missed that. Phew. The idea of butter and mint was horrid. Interested in vanilla mint though.

Betsy. No I don't think he does.

Grin Sadly I'm not like the real Mrs Florrick and thankfully DH is nothing like Mr Florrick!! Grin Can't wait for it to be back on. Oh tomorrow I think. Wine At the ready!

ELR. No problem. I can be your faux Swedish friend. I've lived in the UK so long now I'm a bit of a plastic scandi anyway. Grin Happy to meet.

MrsF - I didn't link to a blog but I do have a self titled (but written by TiP where I post recipes, randomly and by request.

I have inputted my planned dinner, given myself 2 portions of salad to go with my fish and it has come in at 118 calories.Shock. That can't be enough, and what should I have with it as I don't want to starve myself but I also don't want to set off the munchies. I am already mentally allowing myself a spoonful of mash once I have served up the kids.

I had a bit of a panic today when I realised I had to do this WOE forever but I think I will be okay.

DH and I would have liked more children but the midwife said she wouldn't normally pass comment but said we really should stop. I had one miscarriage, then miscarried a twin before coming very close to scar rupture (pushed too well in some ways but thankfully was quick enough as DS2 was at risk) and both of us nearly died, plus I always get PND so that scared DH and he went and got snipped.

toffee was it you that said your period crept up on you last week? Mine has just done the same Shock usually I get a good week of irrationality in before it hits! It might explain why I let DTD1 annoy me so much on Monday though.

hi to everyone, FDers and NFDers alike and hugs to those who need them (mrsf, ELR in particular)

good FD so far, on about 370 and off out for a couple of hours now with DTs, with no opportunity to eat.

Poor Megrim hope they've been their usual welcoming selves over there, introduced you to the Northern delights and really hope you don't get trench foot (I do love the sunshine and lack of getting drowned every day from head to toe down here, but I really miss everything else from home).

Northern Delights???? I remember being presented with a rowie for breakfast after I'd had DS2 in the Matty. I'd never had one before and rapidly came to the conclusion that the two main ingredients must have been lard and salt (I was right).

And the home of the deep fried Mars bar is only just down the coast ...

Hugs to ELR.
Zed - pasta dish sounds yum.
Hope all on FD have had a successful day.
Tonight I tried that slim rice with my curry and veg. Most filling food on an FD I have tried. Definitely going to give the slim noodles a go now.

Now for my dilemma.. On 450 cals at the moment, so which to sacrifice - my mini milk or my hot choc? Decisions decisions !

Yeah, towittowooooo curve. I have a fitwit-nitwit DH too so pthrrrrpt!

Well done fuckwittery maybe you can work your way down to just below your TDEE slowly if you discover you're not losing, and save your grub till night time on a FD to make things easier?

Here's some calorie maths: I've eaten 19,756 cals in the last 16 days, sounds a lot, felt like loads. 19,756 cals divided by 16 days is only about 1,235 cals per day. No WAY would I have enjoyed that 'diet' the way I've enjoyed this new woe.

If I'd eaten at my TDEE for 16 days that would've been 37,760 cals, so I've a deficit of 18,004 cals. If I divide that by the 3,500 cals you need to drop to lose 1lb in weight......I should've lost about 5lbs in 16 days. I'd take that.

So, does that mean I can I have another cupcake now please Mum?

Successful FD7 coming to a close. Didn't think it'd happen after waking up hungry and accidentally eating those 3 Ryvita about 11am, but it happened!!!

Couldn't have done it without all of you today, really pulled me through (plus the dread of having to re-attempt tomorrow if it went wrong!)

ThanksThanksThanks

Thankfully managed a successful FD too (403 cals) although had a real wobble at 4pm, so made myself an egg white omelette which took the edge off for all of 2 seconds then my head was in the fridge. Managed to pull my head out and refocus because I didn't want the hours I'd already put in go to waste. Not sure if I'm going to do another one this week, thinking about maybe Sunday. Just feels like a long time to go until next Monday. Also alcohol will wander back in come the 1st Feb and that's when I really need to get my act together if I'm going to be a fitbit come summer Wink...seriously interested in a fitbit so if anyone's got one I'd be interested too. There's a new one coming out soon that I've got my eye on.

Agree with don'tbe it's coming on here and checking in/ lurking that's really helped today. Thanks guys!
