The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Delurking to join in... (grin)

Have lost around a stone and a half very slowly over last couple of years, mostly through doing lots more exercise and being more careful with my food but have been on a hideous plateau for months and months now. I seem to be losing and regaining the same 7 lbs, and cannot seem to get under 11 stone (would like to be 9 stone 10ish).

I really need to acknowledge and ACT ON the fact that my diet is not what it should be, and have read the book, seen the Horizon programme, tried a couple of the recipes but as yet not committed to actually starting 5:2....Virtual kick up the arse required, please!

I have seen my lovely friend shrink before my eyes after a year on 5:2 - dropped 2 dress sizes - and she swears by it.

So, please - advice on getting started and just some general wisdom and encouragement would be lovely!

Foxsticks · 22/01/2014 08:47

Thanks Betsy, I think the earliest I can POAS is Friday. I won't fast again until I know for sure I'm not, but will definitely update!

Deviant porridge sounds good;, where can I find it!

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 09:06

Britabroad - you sound like me when I started this (a year ago)! - You're in the right place. Go and read the Inspirations thead - that should give the resolve to get started.

Read the OP and other links too then ask anything you need to know on this thread - there's usually someone around to advise/support/give out virtual bumkicks!

You can start tomorrow: skip breakfast; soup for lunch; salmon, salad and veg for dinner. Loads of tea, coffee and water = fast day done. Easy Grin

mscnile · 22/01/2014 09:33

welcome britabroad as betsy says - just skip breakfast and have a light late lunch, light supper and you've done it! Try to do it on a busy day would be my other tip, that way you're too busy to think about food!

Congrats lubey that's great progress!

fox I get more thirsty on 5:2 than I do usually, but do let us know if its exciting news!

I've started my FD with a 2 mile run, am out from about 12 and busy this evening so should manage a good sub 500 day today. I"m going to delay my shower until the warmth from the run has worn off so I can warm up again without in involving calories!

Good luck other wednesday fasters!

mscnile · 22/01/2014 09:33

Sorry, far too many ! in that post Blush

RavenousRunner · 22/01/2014 09:44

Bah, sleepless night due to worrying about work and DH tossing and turning means I am a VERY GRUMPY LADY this morning. Bad run didn't help. Humph. Good thing it's not a FD! The challenge will be not comfort eating - I know it'll only make me feel worse so that will be my mantra.

Recruitment evening where I have to be charming to loads of strangers may derail this plan. Roll on 6:30 and the Wine

RavenousRunner · 22/01/2014 09:46

Toffee I think BoyCat may need a blog detailing his adventures, or a children's book: 'We're going on a mouse hunt. It's going to be a big one! We're not scared'.

I would probably burst into tears if I were brought a baby mouse. Could be worse though, DH's cat used to catch huge river rats and bring them in alive. My MIL has never recovered.

lubeybooby · 22/01/2014 09:49

Thanks all :o

a joyous NFD for me today

ELR · 22/01/2014 09:51

Morning all, haven't caught up on the thread properly will do so in a minute but just wanted to thank everyone for there hugs and sympathy and thank goodness I'm finally warm!! Heating got fixed on Monday night thank goodness.
Did a fast on Monday but think I ended coming in at about 800 had left over paella for tea which was about 500 cals just couldn't be bothered to think about a low cal dinner. Ate mindfully yesterday and will do the same today.
Has anybody tried the cauliflower rice? I did it yesterday with some curried lamb and it was divine, will def be having it on tomorrow's fast day. I didn't do the posh version just blitzed in food processor then steamed in microwave and seasoned with salt and pepper.

So pissed off at the moment think my thyroid is playing up again, feeling so tired, had 9 hours sleep last night and woke up feeling tired and my forearms are killing(possible carpal tunnel).
My neck and shoulder is killing me and the chiropractor is costing a fortune and doesn't seem to be an improvement and to cap it all off I've got planter fasciitis have had for around 14months and that's killing me too!! I'm only 36 and feel so old!! It's just crap waking up in a morning and starting the day in pain!!
Sorry about the epic rant, strangely feel a little better for off loading it all!!

BsshBossh · 22/01/2014 09:54

Oh ELR you poor thing Sad. Do pain killers help?

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 22/01/2014 10:07

dottiest I missed the bit in your posts about your stomach muscles still being separated. Sad

hopeful I used to love body pump. I will be getting back into it when dd is at preschool 3 days a week. Already preparing myself for the horrendous muscle ache after the first session.

Yesterday's fast day came in at 850 cals, so not great but ok. Think I will have to have another fast day tomorrow.

vvviola · 22/01/2014 10:08

I think DH thinks he's missing out on something with me being home with the kids all day.

For a second day this week he 's decided he's going to work from home so he can take DD1 and me out to lunch. But I was planning to have tomorrow as a FD Sad

I haven't told him that I'm doing 5:2 just yet as I wanted to get established with it first - he tries to be helpful but ends up accidentally making things difficult or making me feel scrutinised.

So I need to see how I can manage even a mini-fast tomorrow.

Maybe salad when we go out, and then v v light supper (plan had been chicken noodle soup for lunch and then poached salmon with salad for dinner)

How dare he be sociable and want to spend time with us Wink

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 22/01/2014 10:10

You poor thing erl rant away, I always feel better after a good rant. Hope you feel better soon

ELR · 22/01/2014 10:12

Thanks bssh they help a little I think but not loads can't take too many ibuprofen as I'm anemic and they stop iron absorption, can't take asprin as they thin the blood and I have really heavy periods so that jus takes it worse and paracetamol doesn't help much! I'm a sorry state of affairs really aren't I!!
Doctor has sent me for blood tests but I haven't gone yet, I'm putting it off, he gave me the request slips in November!! Retesting for all and sundry but mainly thyroid and to check my iron levels I usually have to go every 6 months but I hate and the waiting is around 2-3 hours so I've just been avoiding going, I know I need to go.......

ELR · 22/01/2014 10:13

And thanks whenshewasbad

Dawndonnaagain · 22/01/2014 10:16

Hello.
I've just come off medication, so I'm trying this again. I was doing fine last time, but a combination of needing steriods and other medication which is guaranteed to cause weight gain made life difficult. I did Friday and yesterday, but I'm aiming to do Monday and Thursday and see how I go with that.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/01/2014 10:48

Morning all - just about to get my normal NFD brekkie - didn't feel hungry till now.

BritabroadinAsia · 22/01/2014 10:48

Thanks for the tips Betsy and mscnile - actually hadn't thought about skipping breakfast, very conditioned to eat that! But could well be easier so will give it a go... and yes, definitely right about staying busy. Can trough away for hours if I'm bored.

Do you find that non-consecutive days work best?

mscnile · 22/01/2014 10:55

brit non consecutive days work well for me and most others here I think. I no what you mean about breakfast, it felt 'wrong' to skip it but now I find that the longer I can leave it before eating on a FD, the better I manage - once I start I can't stop!

ELR sorry about your aches and pains, sounds grim. How you manage to focus on fasting as well I don't know! You know you need to get those bloods done, shall we chivvy you?

mscnile · 22/01/2014 10:56

I know - I can spell, honest!

annielewis · 22/01/2014 11:14

Oh my GOD!!!! I cannot get my head back in to gear! Someone give me a kick up the arse and help me!!!!!

Have had a few failed FDs lately - and no successful ones! Sad

I really want to get back on track as I ham so near being 10 stone something and I desperately want to crack on and shift the flab again!

Anyone got any tips for getting back on track? I was doing soooo well before christmas and want to get back there but every day there seems to be something that mucks it up admittedly today it was my arse of a husband and me being pissed off and eating breakfast before I remembered its meant to be another FD attempt

Sorry for the me me me whinge fest! Hope the rest of you are doing marvellously and can give me some much needed inspiration!!!!

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 11:33

Just dive in Annie! You KNOW You can do it, we know you can do it. Get rid of any junk food in the house and get your fast day staples in. If you 'fail' a fast then make it a 16:8 day and try for a proper fast tomorrow. Either way you'll be doing your body some favours and getting your head back in the right space to get back on track.

Consider that a big fat support kick up the arse!

britabroad I usually do Monday and Thursday. Almost everyone seems to do Monday so these threads are super busy then!

Jobyloo · 22/01/2014 11:33

Annie you only need to get one good day under your belt and that will help your motivation and determination. You can do it, you've done it beforeSmile Ok so you've had breakfast, if you want today to be a FD just miss out lunch and have a light supper. Or if you really can't today and I hate it when I fall out with DP it puts me all out of kilter so wouldn't blame you. Then just plan a FD menu, the day you're doing it and then stick to it.

FD's are flexible so don't beat yourself up, this is a WOL & life sometimes just gets in the way. Focus on what you have achieved rather than the failures because that will just make you more miserable. Go and read the inspiration threads and remind yourself why you want to do this. Sending you a (((hug))) because it sounds like you need one. You can do this, it just takes one day at a time Smile

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 11:36

Talking of new threads, I'll put a new one up later - if this one happens to fill up when I'm out then look for number 37 on the 5:2/fasting page after 4pm.

I think this one will hold out till then Grin

almostthereagain · 22/01/2014 11:38

I'm newly back to it annie having been dragging my feet so have a kick from me Grin
ELR I need to do the bloods thing too, had my forms same amount of time as you, lets commit to doing it by the end of next week? How about trying a pain gel like voltarol, not sure if that's any better with other issues. Stretching helps my pain a lot. Even though I know it makes me feel better I get into the mode of putting it off as pain makes me grumpy & tired. I sympathiseSad
FD here for me, woke up STARVING but feel fine now. Plan to put off eating as long as poss then trying (sorry forget whose suggestion it was) tinned toms, spinach & cannellini bean combo. Hoping for pre Christmas weight weigh in post F tomorrow, fingers xed!
