The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.
Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Yeah, wood does usually follow woo.

I shall be staying away from The Maldives then!

Hope you get some relief soon elr
It puts my totm cupcake frenzy into some perspective and reminds me how far I've come (and many others here I suspect) just to be healthy enough to try this IF deal.

Am eyeing up leftover toddler lunch now...I am not a bin. A bin full of pig swill. Yup, that's done it.

MrsFlorrick · 22/01/2014 14:31

Timeto. Grin "Erects". Very good.

I've now put two and two together and made myself hugely paranoid that DH wants more DC. (Fear)

Need to talk to him later. I was reasonably sure we agreed no more (DS appalling sleeping should've put anyone off).

Zedzed. Be wary of romantic holidays. Wink

We go to the Indian Ocean a lot because of diving. Or rather used to be pre DC. I think this is our 9th trip to Maldives.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/01/2014 14:42

Why on Earth would MrF want more children?! Hmm He doesn't do much with the ones he has iirc Sad.

MrsFlorrick · 22/01/2014 14:48

Toffee. I don't think he does. But I suddenly started to feel paranoid.

Anyway he has mentioned more than once that 2 is a good number for us as we don't have any family close by to help.

Wink

Toffee was it you who link that blog recipes thing yesterday? It's bloody brilliant!!! Thanks Thanks

zedzedzed · 22/01/2014 14:51

I might've liked a wee surprise-in-my-40s-3rd-bub...but no way do I want to be pregnant again, which is a bit of a conundrum...any offers? DH doesn't want any more so I guess we're done.

I don't think we'll be going on any exotic holidays till after the menopause hits anyway so perhaps I'll be safe.

Legs/fingers crossed till then.

Breadandwine · 22/01/2014 14:58

((( MrsF ))) We men don't know the half of it don't know a tenth of what some women have to go through giving birth.

Huge respect for you and what you've achieved!

Tell your DH you do not want to go through that again! Tell him that the world doesn't need any more children. Tell him anything - but make sure you tell him NO!

MrsFlorrick · 22/01/2014 15:12

B&w. Thanks
I love this thread. I posted to support ELR and now I'm getting hugs. GrinGrin

ELR · 22/01/2014 15:13

Thanks for all the support guys, got off my sorry arse and went shopping, the cure to everything in my book!! Stuck my fitbit on just before I left and pleased to say I did 5000 steps while shopping and even though my foot is killing abit more now, I do feel better for getting out and about.
almostthere ok will promise to get them done by end of next week!
tip thanks for the Pilates tip was doing a weekly class before Christmas and quite enjoyed it. timetopassgo the class I was doing was at a Pilates/yoga centre with maybe max 8 people but usually there's only 4/5 each week the lady is really nice too. The reason I haven't gone back is it is £10 a class and I was thinking of joining a gym instead then I could swim and do body balance but at the moment even driving the car is making my wrists hurt!
mrsF thanks for sharing your story it does give me hope and makes me realise there are much worse cases than mine. I may just pm you one of these days especially as we are so close, and if you are from Sweden I will definitely as I have a Norwegian friend, a Danish friend and a Finnish(not technically scandi I know)friend so only need a Dane and I'll the full set!!Grin

The thing is I look absolutely fine because I dress well and wear make up everyday and I'm quite a chatty person everyone just assumes you are 100% ok and sometimes you just really aren't! Sharing it all on here is a definite life saver! So thanks again everyone xxxxxxx

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 22/01/2014 15:34

Just had a buttermint tea, yummmmmmmm!

The only thing keeping me going this fast day and stopping me from snacking is that I really don't want to go through this again this week! Anyone else?

MrsFlorrick · 22/01/2014 16:00

ELR. You have a Danish friend now. Me. Grin

MrsFlorrick · 22/01/2014 16:03

What's butter mint tea? Please tell me that mint and dairy butter isn't involved....

shumway · 22/01/2014 16:06

Do you find that your nearest and dearest try to feed you up on your non-fast days? I'm experiencing that at the moment. Sad

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 22/01/2014 16:12

Mrs F you must have missed Monday's discussion about it. It's a Twinning Sensations one which is peppermint tea plus a hint of vanilla, making it slightly creamy and luxurious! No butter involved fortunately Smile

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 16:13

I think the Neanderthal MrF likes to keep the gorgeous mrsF barefoot and pregnant :( Keep those legs closed in the Maldives Mrs!

(btw - I've recently discovered the joys of The Good Wife - so now I envision the stunning Julianna Margulies when I see you on here MrsF Grin - talking of which I think I can squeeze in an episode before getting on with chores...)

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 16:14

shumway the trick is to get the nearest and dearest fasting too - solves those issues!

ELR · 22/01/2014 16:18

mrsF I think its a mint tea that is a little creamy tasting. I had a quick scan in the tea section in waitrose earlier but couldn't see it. It's actually a swede i needed not a Dane that was a typo but hey you can never have enough Danish friends!
I'm just having a lovely cup of ovaltine then I'm going to make super delux bolognaise sauce and a sticky toffee pudding bought some extra thick single cream to have with it too can't wait! Then it's a fast day tomorrow today's all about yummy food. DH just sent me an email with details of a spa day that he's booked for us, so feeling loved! He doesn't usually get me surprises. It's his birthday on Sunday and our wedding anniversary better get out quick and get him a present! This time last year we had just checked into our hotel in NYC for his 40th somehow a present just won't be the same!!

zedzedzed · 22/01/2014 16:20

There's love in the thread today hums 'can you feel the love tonight' while stirring NFD fennel pork and tomato sauce for pasta...remembering to take out tiny salmon fillets for FD tomorrow...feeling slightly less love now having remembered there are cupcakes left and I can only eat them the day AFTER tomorrow. (sad)

Glad don't be likes the buttermint though!

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 16:28

Ok folks, I have now popped up a new thread but please finish this one up before migrating over en masse Grin x

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 22/01/2014 16:30

mrsf wow having kids really did a number on your body, really inspiring how you got over it. Only thing I had was spd, that was bloody agony but corrected itself 3 weeks after birth.

erl good plan going shopping, I think I might use that as motivation. It's so much easier to by clothes when you are slim.

vvviola · 22/01/2014 16:31

Can't remember who said it, but I definitely will be telling DH about 5:2, as I really want him to do it - for health and weight benefits (his father died of heart issues in his early 60s and DH is a carbon copy of him), but until I can show him that it works/is possible there's no point (I'm a read-the-science type girl, he's a see-the-results type bloke).

Although, considering it's 5:30am, I've been woken 6 times by the DC tonight, I suspect resisting the carbs will be a struggle again today.

Southeastdweller · 22/01/2014 16:32

Oh I'm so cheesed off not to have found butternut tea despite trawling round four supermarkets - if anyone in the London area knows where I can get some please let me know!

ELR · 22/01/2014 16:32

zzz that sounds yummy I love fennel and pork, care to share??

TimeToPassGo · 22/01/2014 16:35

ELR I promise you it will be worth spending the money on a couple of one to one sessions with a physio who does pilates. If you have existing injuries / pains it is really important to go to someone who really understands anatomy and can adapt the exercises for you. Also they can look at you and change your form by half a centimetre - and suddenly it's like a different exercise altogether! :)

Southeastdweller · 22/01/2014 16:36

vvviola If you don't mind him knowing what you post on here then tell him to get on here and read the Inspirational thread as some chaps have posted our stories on there, includuing myself.
