The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

doris (and toffee and talkin too)

www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/866/opendoc/198735

It's pretty common during and after child birth...and as my 2nd monster was 12lbs I guess I had it coming. There's an exercise here (in link) that's about as far as you should go till they're re-knitted (re-knat!). But if it's just general um...saggage musculus, then I guess like everything, else muscle-related, you build up slowly and don't torture yourself or you'll give up!

The reason I like Davina's power of Three (3x30mins) is she gives you two options for each ab section, easy and not so easy, so you can work up and not feel you've failed.

Personally, I mute Davina now and just have the music track option on!

TalkinPeace · 21/01/2014 21:44

zedzed
i did bodypump and pilates until I was a week overdue with DC2 - so my abs pinged back into place, but yes, the sooner you can get working them again the better

curveballs · 21/01/2014 21:49

Wow zed, 12lb? That's got to smart a bit!

almostthereagain · 21/01/2014 21:50

Dottie I'm not doing shred although I have done it before with good results, its a 30 day challenge that works you up fairly gradually from what I can tell. Sort of c25k for tummies I think. Mine are 10 & 12 now but I really remember the shock of how weak I was after they were born. I also had very little energy but found walking as fast as I could built up a bit of strength & def gave me energy too even when I didn't feel like it. I know it's hard to get any speed past a dawdle with 2 though as the bigger one always wants to be out of the pushchair inspecting everything! You'll be back to dancing soon enough.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/01/2014 22:01

Dottie, I'm doing the shred for the 3rd time - there's modified versions of quite a lot of the moves and if you need a few seconds breather that's ok - so its not as tough as the name makes it sound. The first level is on youtube if you want to take a look.

zedzedzed · 21/01/2014 22:05

Yes curve it was a bit ouchie, (very sadly, at 43 feckin weeks and after about a 6 days of lavender and clary hypnobirthing at home, I got to 9cm and still had to transfer to hospital and ended up with another c-section, boooooooo. But at least The Lady Is Still Available to Lunch this way, as in retrospect I don't really fancy pushing a 12lb-er out).

Talkin my hat is off to you. I was trying for an HBAC so had to stay pretty mobile, but pumping would've been beyond me as I was Titanic and humungoid bloomin baby was lying on a nerve! More ouchie.

MazzleDazzle · 21/01/2014 22:13

LO FD today consisting of 1 x Dulce Gusto skinny cappuccino, 1 x diet Pepsi, 1 x green tea and water. Also did a food shop at TESCO and resisted all temptations. The wonderful bread I bought can wait until tomorrow.

No exercise at all today. Have a class tomorrow morning though.

Boiler man did not arrive as promised today, so heating and hot water is till temperamental. Was out of the house most of today though, so didn't affect me too much.

Started an art class today and I've signed up for a 10K all terrain obstacle course (I've only just started exercising after a 3 year break and I'm still 'obese' according to BMI!). Trying to fill my life with lots of positive things - mumsnet being one of them! I'm also hoping that I will become strong enough to overcome the negative aspects of my life.

I bought Mosley & Spencer's 'The Fast Diet' & McKenna's 'Freedom From Emotional Eating' today in WHSmith as they were BOGO half price. Feeling empowered!

zed I can't think of a better way to spend 15 cals! Everyone knows that the batter tastes better than the cake, or maybe that's just my baking skills Blush!

Thank you for the quick bread recipe B&W! Now I really have no excuse!

As for the nothing happened sit ups Dotty? I know that feeling! When it happened to me, I couldn't believe it. I used to be one of the top sit-uppers in my class. 2 c-sections later, I'm the worst. For now!

Off to bed, so "Goodnight".

I shall dream of all the wonderful things I can eat tomorrow!

zedzedzed · 21/01/2014 22:15

PS Today I have eaten 500cals of homemade cupcakes. This is my first adventure into proper carbs and sugar on an NFD, I'm well under my TDEE still as I knew I'd have to have one of each flavour (salted coffee is pretty damn fine btw). I've enjoyed them, but feel a bit grotty and sluggish. Am strangely looking forward to my FD Thurs...it's kind of ...addictive. Like your body craves the FDs as much as your brain craves cupcakes!

Night all, thanks and good luck tomorrow. X

ErrolTheDragon · 21/01/2014 22:21

Wow... a thread about weight loss where people can happily talk about cupcakes, chocolate and bread recipes! Smile

MazzleDazzle · 21/01/2014 22:22

zed we share so much shittiness! As well as having a similar situation with our parents Sad, I had an attempted at home hypnobirth and ended up with a very overdue emergency c-section! Besides that, we are both Scottish, which isn't shitty.

Hopefully, we will both end up on the motivational thread after having phenomenal success with this WOL emoticon.

MazzleDazzle · 21/01/2014 22:24

Was meant to read [optimistic emoticon]!

zedzedzed · 21/01/2014 22:27

Shite, mazzle you and I can say shite to each other...being Sweaty Socks n aw that. Mon then Mazza, geeza haun wi aw this 5:2 hingy eh? Lay aff ae the sausage suppers an Bru an swally nuthin but good shite fae now oan.

Sorry. Best go to bed now.

MorrisZapp · 21/01/2014 22:36

I wouldn't advise anybody to lie down cold and attempt to do sit ups. I do mine at the end of my workout (body attack/ body pump), and I can do quite a lot but I'm very warm and flexible by that point.

I know people have good reasons for doing home workouts, but if you can, gym classes are always going to push you further and harder, ime.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/01/2014 23:55

It is always best to warm up before exercise, to prepare the muscular & cardiovascular system and help avoid injury.

I adore abs and can do them anytime. They are the only type of training where a middle-aged bag like me can beat really fit young blokes on equal terms. But I didn't have kids, so I'll shut up now !

hopefulgum · 22/01/2014 00:02

All this talk of sit-ups, body attack and body pump has me feeling decidedly tiredGrin I'm excited about a long walk on the beach. I used to get so sore from bodypump, even after months of doing it, that I gave up. I got sick of it hurting to walk up stairs, all the time. I know weights are very good for you, but these days I prefer to lift my own body weight doing yogaSmileIt seems to hurt me a lot less.

Today will be my third attempt at a fast day (sigh) this week. I know we don't talk about "failing", but after two attempts (and, actually, it was circumstances that screwed it up) I feel a bit desperate for my FD to work today! I think it may be a little bit addictive: I really want to achieve two FD's a week because I know it makes me feel good, helps me control my appetite, and I'm loving the lost inches results...

However, I have to take DS to a birthday party at the beach, at lunch time, so I think my will power may be tested yet again. I have thawed some vegie soup, which I can't really eat at the beach, but I might eat it before we go,so that I don't feel overly hungry.

Going for a long walk now, will try to do a few sprints in there too, which should help suppress my appetite, right?

BigChocFrenzy · 22/01/2014 00:21

Hopeful It is really difficult to do FDs when you have social occasions to attend. I either postpone /skip FDs then, or fast all day and go for a mini-FD. You didn't fail before; you were just putting the FD on hold for a better opportunity.
Smile
Good luck today.

OP posts:
vvviola · 22/01/2014 00:23

Is it possible to have NSV after only one FD and two failures deferred FDs?

Just made the DC their lunch, and I'd usually eat bread and butter while doing it, then make myself a sandwich. But I didn't feel hungry perhaps something to do with coffee and cake with a friend this morning so I didn't. I'll have something later when DD2 naps if I feel hungry, but I think even the attempted FDs have shown me how much mindless eating and eating "because it's that time" I do.

Breadandwine · 22/01/2014 00:31

CheshireSplat looks like you fell through the net - sorry about that! Blush

Welcome to this wonderful WOL!

Sounds like you've got this sussed! About your 135 calories - bit late now, probably, but a couple of squares of dark chocolate come to just over 100! Grin

vvv It doesn't take a lot for us to realise just how we put on weight in the first place, does it? And now you've got the tools to deal with it! Smile

lubeybooby · 22/01/2014 03:05

4lb loss! woop :o

Not2bObvious · 22/01/2014 05:39

Well done Lubey, over a quarter of a stone. That's excellent. Up early to put finishing touches to work stuff, if my laptop ever boots upAngry Have my workout gear ready to sling on so I can try squeeze in a Davina 15 min workout or 2 in before shower/pack/flight. Not sure what to aim for today Confused Depends on where the team chose for dinner I guess, prob be Indian - I can find something tomatoey that won't break the waistband bank. Mini FD tomorrow then. Have a lovely day y'all!

CheshireSplat · 22/01/2014 07:50

Thanks breadandwine for the chocolate idea. You are good at helping out us newbies! I had 200 ml of hot full-fat milk and it was delicious!!!! FDs don't normally go that easily (in my short experience) and I tend to find the second one of the week harder than the first so it'll be interesting to see how it goes tomorrow!

I second zed's point about this WOE being addictive. This thread is the same! If I spent all the time doing some exercise that I do following this thread I'd be halfway there! However, I am clenching like never before!

Foxsticks · 22/01/2014 08:10

Hi, I just started 5:2 last week and did my first fast day on Thursday and second yesterday. Both went ok, it wasn't anywhere near as awful as I thought. I've had a raging thirst since Friday even when not fasting and have also been really tired. Is this normal?
I
Coincidentally these are also the signs I get when pregnant, I don't know if I should get my hopes up or if its a 5:2 thing!

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 08:27

Yoga would be a good way to ease into using all the muscle groups again, including coaxing those stomach muscle back to life.

Also, when I did couch to 5k a couple of years ago (having never been a runner of any sort) I noticed that my stomach muscles would ache a bit after even a brief run so they were being activated by the running, but in a low impact sort of way.

I had zero stomach muscle ability after having huge babies so it's nice to have found them again, albeit under a (now small) layer of squish :)

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 08:31

Well done lubey :)

Great to hear you've found fasting ok fox! If you're thirsty, keep drinking - could be the fasting as you need to drink loads more to replace all the water in the food you haven't eaten. Tiredness I suspect has more to do with January than fasting! Let us know if you POAS though :) And obviously you should not be fasting or calorie restricting whilst pregnant of course.

CinammonGirl · 22/01/2014 08:35

NFD here and I just broke fast with the deviant porridge - oh dear god, whoever suggested that (sorry I can't remember who posted about it) thank you thank you thank you! Delicious is not the word :)
