Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

zedzedzed - hang in there! I have been trying on and off to lose weight for 1 year 6 months and have only lost 2 stone iirc. You can do this! I am happy it has been so slow tbh as it is more likely to stay off.

WipsGlitter · 09/01/2014 14:03

Fasted on Tuesday, not too hard. Weighed in the next morning (yesterday) had dropped 6lbs, weighed in this morning - seem to have put it all back on again!!

ImABadGirl · 09/01/2014 14:04

zed first of all well done for getting on the scales, now you know it'll only go one way.....down.

I've lost 7 lb in this first week of fasting so you can too, you just have to stick with it and remember the phrase

'I can have it tomorrow'

You also have lots of support on here, we're all with you Smile

zedzedzed · 09/01/2014 14:08

It's so stupid but I just can't stop crying. It's only a number and I've already started to deal with it by starting this WOE....but it sucks, it just bloody sucks and there's no quick fix. It's going to be so hard not to do the 'starve myself all the time thing to try to get a jump start on it', even though I know it only makes things worse, very scared of eating over 2000cals when trying to lose weight... I just want to fast forward a year! Covered in snot now. Pity party here, bring your own miso soup. x

zedzedzed · 09/01/2014 14:09

Oh thanks all....more snot...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Not2bObvious · 09/01/2014 14:17

Calling off the fast for today. Too miserable to continue, and decided to take advantage of this WOL's flexibility. It's been a 16:8 with over an hours exercise so still not too shabby.
I wish I liked soup, I think that's what pushed me over the edge! I have homemade soup for lunch and I thought I'd cry if I had to eat it, drama llama hereGrin

TheRaniOfYawn · 09/01/2014 14:23

zzz, it sounds as though you might have a lot if muscle. I am 5 foot 6 so a lot shorter than you and when I was a size 18 I weighed under 180lb. In your situation, I think that scales might not be all that appropriate for goal setting. Body fat measured properly, or waist circumference might be a better thing to consider because it sounds as though you would have a high BMI even when slim.

123rd · 09/01/2014 14:36

Great minds think alike erol!
Zzzzz everyone says its better to lose the weight slower and it stays off. But I know its shit if you want results that you can notice.
Is everyone weighing themselves? I don't own scales and they don't have them at the gym so I could pop to boots or somewhere but I'm going on "wobbly" factorWink when my bum doesn't wobble whilst I brush my teeth I will be a happy girl!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 09/01/2014 14:42

Errol black sugarless tea and coffee are free. Too low to count.

ZZZ now! You can't sue me or whatevs if this doesn't happen!...but...... I think largely (excuse pun Wink ) the more you have to lose, the quicker it comes off at the start, so I doubt you will only see 1lb every week.

I started 5:2 with 4 stone to lose. In 3mths I'd lost 1st stone. First 5lbs came off in 3fd (I started on a thurs and didn't weigh til following fri - my usual weigh day). Since then it has been either -1lb, stall (still success), or occasionally after a stall I would lose a couple. But that is still a stone! And it goes so quickly once you're into it. At least it's January, imagine how much difference you could make by spring let alone summer??!!

Just go for it woman! We're all right behind you. At least you are on right road now. DON'T get off it!

Take all of your measurements NOW!!! You will shrink much faster than the scales say.

Chin up girl! Blow your nose or you'll end up with shiny cheeks Grin and just get through one week at a time.

(gets out megaphone)... YOU CAN DO THIS!

Thanks Thanks

Eatriskier · 09/01/2014 14:45

zed

don't panic. everyone here is making very good points.

when I started this I was 209lb with a BMI of 35, and I was busting out of size 20s! So the fact you're in 18s is to your benefit.

1lb a week is an average and its more common for obese and overweight people to lose quicker. So whilst everyone says you may only lose at that rate, its so people don't think its some massive quick fix.

This is meant to be slow and sustainable and you will learn through doing this the tools you need to keep that weight off once you have lost it. That is really a million times better than losing the weight very quickly then just as quickly regaining it and more because you have leant nothing.

Also, until you try you will never know if you're a tortoise or a sprinter.

And, as rani says scales are not the be all and end all. Definitely take your measurements around waist and hips (and other places like thighs and arms if you want). The times you don't see much movement on the scales you may see big movements there.

zedzedzed · 09/01/2014 14:46

123 I only weighed myself this once to calculate my Total Daily Energy Expenditure thingy, I think you have to get that right in order to work out how much to eat on non fasting days, (if you eat too little, like a low cal/crash diet, your body goes into starvation mode and you don't lose consistently and feel deprived and eat entire cheeses for a snack, and if you go way above over the course of a week, even with two fasts, you won't lose either. So I think you gotta weigh yourself once!)

But I'm going with 4 pairs of descending jeans instead of scales (may pop back to the doc's waiting room scales in 6wks or so if I feel brave)...have just got size 16 jeans out and tried 'em on...not even ONTO bum...so a fair few fasts before I try those on again!

Thanks for all the support gals.

TheBitchesOfWeestick · 09/01/2014 14:46

Five pages already? I'll never keep up. Still, all that typing must burn a few calories...right?

I can feel myself leaning towards becoming a zealot about this way of eating. NFD today and I'm doing fine, not especially hungry at all. Had a big bowl of porridge for breakfast, packet of Monster Munch on the way to soft play, slice of quiche en route to town, cheese salad sandwich with mustard and mayo just now. Feel quite stuffed and still have over 1000 cals to play with thanks to the several hours of walking with toddler in pushchair that I've done so far today.

One of the best things about this for me, so far (and I'm genuinely sorry for the overshare here), is the massive reduction in farting! All last year I had bad bouts of bloating, wind and just felt like such a disgusting human being. This week, I feel like my normal self again :) :) :) I hadn't thought much about the resting your digestion aspect of 5:2, but it's a total bonus.

Off to do school run, but here's my stats before I forget (again):

Height: 5'3"
Weight: 10st7 I think (scales are a bit rubbish)
BMI: 26
TDEE: 1800ish

Goal is to reach at least 9st5 - I used to be 8-8.5st as a young whippersnapper, but not sure that would look so good on me these days. My weight naturally went down to 9-9.5st after DD was born and it was a good fit, so something around there would be nice :)

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2014 14:48

Errol black sugarless tea and coffee are free. Too low to count.
Yes, I know.... but disgusting IMO.Grin I need a decent amount of milk, more than a 'splash'. A bit Envy of people who can take their drinks black!

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2014 14:51

zzz - the jeans sound like a great way to see your progress! Meanwhile you've probably expelled a few ounces of snot ... though that's probably not the ideal way to lose weight.

zedzedzed · 09/01/2014 14:53

Oh thanks so much everyone...good to know there were a couple of +200lbs who've had success...had no idea I was even IN that shite club! Have mopped up snot and got the babies up from naps and my wee boy just said 'you're pretty mummy...do you want my car?' more snot!!!

Still scared of the 2264cals, not that I mind eating it! Just used to crappy 1200 diets...should I really eat that much??? Will I cock it up/start starvation if I eat 1800 say?

BsshBossh · 09/01/2014 14:53

zedzed well done for braving the scales and realising you can eat loads and still lose weight :) If it's any consolation, Feb 2012 I had a BMI of 36; nearly 2 years later (2 years that whizzed by!) I have a BMI of 21. My photos (though not yet updated) are in my profile. And it took eatriskier less than a year to lose her 80 lbs. You can do it.

zedzedzed · 09/01/2014 14:59

WOW! Bsssh You look hot-hot-hot, you must be so proud of yourself. Yes, I think I look about your size now or just a tad slimmer (on the left one, natch) soooo good to see what you've achieved...and I already stalked eatriskier yesterday...when I thought I too 'only' had 80lbs to lose. Amazing accomplishments! Thanks.

NotAsTired · 09/01/2014 15:00

OK, I'm back after having had a good long break. I think I last contributed on thread 30? I didn't manage any 5:2 since end of November but I have done lots of 16:8s.

First fast day of the year today. Not doing too badly, lots of water and a couple of mugs of tea.

ImABadGirl · 09/01/2014 15:02

eat day for me today and I've had jacket spud with beans and having chicken fajitas for tea, also had 2 roses chocolates from the tin at work (normally would have had a huge handful) this woe has really shown me portion control, banana for snack earlier.

Might try a 24 hours fast tomorrow depending on how I'm feeling, I really do think eating triggers my want to stuff as much in me as possible as I don't feel hungry until I eat on fast days...

madhairday · 09/01/2014 15:22

I'd like to join if that's OK?

I started the 5:2 on Monday and fasted Monday and today (although not doing so well as ill and need some energy). My downfall is carbs. I'm veggie and really struggle with low carb meals. I like a big stir fry veg meal but like noodles/rice with it...find it hard to find good recipes for a veggie trying to go lower on carbs.

Do you low carb all the time or just on fast days?

I also struggle with exercise due to disability, but weight has gone up a lot lately and am determined to get it back down again.

RavenousRunner · 09/01/2014 15:22

Harder to subsist on hot drinks when there's a tin full of lovely shortbread in the office kitchen...I'm going to have one tomorrow. Plus have treats planned for weekend - dinner out and party on Saturday, doing Greek-style goat roast on Sunday, making rice krispy squares with younger son (and then sending them off with him to a friend's so I can only have a few!). Long run scheduled so it shouldn't do too much damage before Monday's FD.

I can have it tomorrow is my supreme mantra now!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 09/01/2014 15:30

Sorry Errol thought you meant basic cals! All depends on how milky/sweet you like it really! I have small tsp sugar in my BLACK coffee so I count each one as 15 cals. 3 of them a day's my limit. Get caffeine rage otherwise! Grin

Weigh out one mugs worth of tea/coffee milk - stare at it so you burn the image to your eyeballs, work out cals, then you'll never need to measure again! Same for sugar.

Saves faffing with measuring total allowances out each day.

Vague recollection of my size mug tea with milk and sugar being 30 cals.

Then again, since starting this I have managed to ditch the milk in my coffee and have shaved quantities off my sugar gradually.

Oh and please NO apologising for oversharing people!!
We love a good overshare round these parts makes rest of us feel better about ours Wink

Can NEVER share enough!!!! Grin

Dotty342kids · 09/01/2014 15:32

Hey there zedzedzed just want to join in the encouragement. It's horrid when you suddenly have the moment of "oh god, do I really weigh that much / look like that" and we've all been there!

I've lost 16lbs in just under a year and it really doesn't feel like a year! This way of eating is so sustainable and so comfortable that the time whizzes past and you won't feel like you're on a diet, as with so many other things you (and we) have probably tried in the past.

Who was it said about the farting? Well I never had that particular problem Grin but certainly experience less "bloat" now that I'm a regular faster. It's as though my body just needs those breaks from food to resettle and empty itself. Over Christmas the dreaded bloat definitely returned and it was horrid.
The temporary hunger of fast days plus the satisfaction of eating your 500 cals is sooooo much nicer Smile

mummytowillow · 09/01/2014 15:50

I weighed in and lost 3lb am I allowed to say I expected more

Third fast day today and I could eat my arm! I've worked out I've been eating too many calories I worked out TDEE as 1970 but should be 1900 which over 5 days has added up.

Onwards and upwards I say, enjoying it so far as I know I can eat well tomorrow x

zedzedzed · 09/01/2014 15:59

Hey, what the Hell happened here...I did some snotty/self-pitying hoovering, I come back and we're on farts?? I'm shocked and appalled.

And fat.

Did I mention that already? POOR ME! I ATE ALL THE PIES!

Am now going to add up all today's cals and work out what my TDEE of 2264 cals looks like, meal-wise. Anyone think that I could eat less than my TDEE without triggering famine mode? Or is alternate day fasting better? Um...quicker? Panicking about the two years it'll take me to get skinny? Who me? FAAAAART!
