Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

zed I'm doing ADF and am finding it ok but then I'm an all or nothing person, I eat my TDEE on eat days and find if I have cals left over I have a piece of fruit, my TDEE is 1977 so not much lower than yours

I even have chocolate on eat days Grin

zed I quite often didn't eat TDEE whilst I was losing, but then I also wasn't too far from it (within 100-200). This still meant I had a very large difference between FD and NFD. As my weight dropped and my TDEE dropped the deficit did disappear somewhat obviously! Don't eat if you're not hungry but don't deprive yourself either. And remember its an average thing over a week, so where you may find yourself not wanting to eat near TDEE one day you may find yourself wanting something extra on another one, and it will probably average out.

Ok people, talk to me about eggs. I can't remember the last time I have eaten an egg (as I am very fussy) unless is came in cake form. But I'm getting intrigued by them now. Anyone able to describe the taste to me?

zed some people do lose quite quickly on 5:2, I was 14 stone when I started and lost fast. It will happen eventually.

I'm feeling bloated and horrid as my period is overdue (no chance I'm pregnant though!). I'm having a FD despite that, and despite having a really really busy evening tonight. I normally go to bed early on FDs. Feeling a bit grumpy about my 10stone 7 plateau, it's been a few weeks now.

Can people bombard me with their best plateau busting tips?

madhairday I low carb most of the time, but it absolutely isn't compulsory. I do it because grains make me bloated, so I feel better when I don't eat them/eat them rarely.

zed advise starting off with 5:2, you can always up to 4:3 if you ever plateau! And if you're really scared about eating up to your TDEE then I reckon you could aim for 2000 and that way there's a little bit of leeway for extra things if needed but your body won't suddenly think "I'm starving" and cling on to every last calorie either. ...

Golly gosh. Lots of newcomers. Welcome.

A weekly thought on how to plan meals including fast days .....

Monday : 500 calories
Tuesday : TDEE less 10%
Wednesday : TDEE less 10%
Thursday : 500 calories
Friday : TDEE
Saturday : whatever you fancy but in the region of TDEE (Wine is often involved)
Sunday : TDEE

the two batches of "less 10%" make the saturday guilt free

Ok. Ok. Stop panicking. See how it goes on 5:2 at 2000, maybe do 4:3 if it's just not happening. Got it. Gotta be better than repellent SlimShite or Fat-free-Fecking-Flavourless-Life or Wait and Watch or whatever.

God, thanks so much everyone, thank God I found 5:2 and this thread before I weighed-in or I'd be standing on a precipice over a gully of fondue right now.

Zed I reckon you'll lose quickly to start with so don't stress about the time factor 1lb a week average. I started out 2 and a bit years ago at BMI 36, now I'm at 23 - the thing is the weight will come off and you never look back because you'll have all the tools to keep it off. It won't be like all the other times you've lost and gained again. If you keep up with it then it never needs to go back on.

I think aiming for 2000 on nfds sounds sensible too.

We're all here with you and will be cheering you on all the way :)

The support on these threads doesn't waver - and as you can see it's busy! There's usually someone around.

Plus you're already really great at fasting! You're already on your way.

madhairday I don't avoid all carbs on fast days, though I tend to steer clear of pasta and rice. I sometimes have beans on toast for my dinner. I tend to have a bean chilli wrapped in a tortilla, or a stew with sweet potatoes and butternut squash. Potatoes are good too, I think it is unfair that they are lumped in with carbs all the time. They are a vegetable after all. I for one do not find that eating potatoes in a curry for instance makes me hungrier, I find they fill be up nicely. The real secret to potatoes is make sure you weigh them. You cannot trust a recipe that gives you a calorie content based on one large potato. Large could mean anything.

eatriskier I can't believe you don't know what an egg tastes like. I can't really describe is as it tastes like, well an egg.

My advice would be to try a little scrambled egg, cooked in butter. Do not over cook it though, just keep stiring it until the texture starts to change, then take it off the heat and stir a bit more. Dried out egg is a bit rubbery.

I don't really eat eggs much on fast days, as i think they taste best cooked in butter or slathered in mayonnaise.

eatriskier wins the prize for most random/impossible to answer question of the day!

Describe what an egg tastes like

Egg tastes like egg, nothing else tastes like an egg except another egg. It's texture can be anything from fluffy to silky-like to dry and crumbly depending on how you cook it.

Perhaps try an omelette? Do you like melted cheese? Sprinkle some cheese on the omelette while it's cooking.

Oh damn, making myself hungry!

TDEEs are NOT set in stone - they are rough estimations. The actual amount you burn each day differs wildly.

So, Mummytowillow, 70 cals difference is neither here nor there. You wont be able to weigh out and eat foods to that level of accuracy.

ZZZ start with 2000 if that makes more sense to you. And take your time. Give it a month before assessing.

Oh Thursday, sometimes you are a hard fast day - been too 'good' this week so now I'm hungry hungry hungry!

Only 1hr15 minutes till supper :)

I usually end up going over a bit 500 on Thursdays (not that I actually calorie count properly, but it's usually more than my Monday version.)

My lunch soup was not of the low calorie variety either - plenty of chicken stock and untrimmed bacon went into it.

Some days are just harder than others, even though I've been doing this for a year! (nearly!)

Have I broken the internet with that question? Genuinely I don't remember what they taste like, just that I didn't like them. Having said that I didn't like most things and now i have killed my taste buds with booze I can tolerate and even like some things! I think I shall try some scrambled at some point, and if I still don't like I'll palm it off on DD who is a veritable dustbin!

eatriskier Um...why don't you know what eggs taste like??

You know that sulphurous bad fart eggy smell? Well they DON't taste like that. Poached softly in swirling hot water, on brown toast with butter and seasalt...yum. The yolks taste like meatless protein, very intensely creamy and slightly burnt flavour.

Have added today's careful but yummy cals (before I knew I had 2264 to play with, or 2000 if I'm saving 10% for wknd booze) So my marmitey toast brekkie, chicken salad sarnie, coffees, hot choc and including potential dinner of steak, mushroom (cooked in butter!) peashoot salad, yoghurt pud and a whiskey...I'd still have 550 left of 2000. That's mad.

Chocolate buttons it is then!

Good point tip I do have egg fried rice from time to time, so they can't be horrendous! I've probably had them in other dishes too without properly realising it.

zed I haven't had them since I was a kid. A long long time ago in a universe far far away. And they're one of those things I haven't gotten round to re-trying as an adult.

I'm getting more adventurous in my old age Wink

I love boiled eggs done only for about 5 minutes, so they're set but not all chalky and dry (the way my mum made them - she boiled them for 15 minutes!), with Maldon and lots of pepper. It's the only kind of just-egg egg my sons will eat, and they can both put away 3 at one go if I don't stop them. It's worth getting nice organic ones if you're eating them plain, they have lovely orange yolks and are just that bit yummier - maybe because they're fresher?

I really want a boiled egg now...more water. I have to go to the loo every 30 minutes, hope my supervisor doesn't think I have a UTI (or that I'm snorting cocaine).

Hello again everyone,

Second FD today- banana for breakfast, slimasoup with 3 crackerbreads for lunch and a low fat ready meal (280 cal) for dinner. Actually feeling fine! peckish but not as desperate as my first fast day!

zedzedzed i was shocked too when i saw my scales- i had double the amount i thought i needed to lose! but any loss is better than a gain, and i am feeling so good after only 2 FDs! I find the day after my FD i feel super alert- its great. I have also started gillian mitchells 30 day shred DVD- i am so so so unfit so it is killing me (not doing it on FDs) but I have heard great reviews from friends and that it really helps to boost weight loss (as well as toning up!) Its only 20 mins per session so I have no excuse not to do it when I get in from work before dinner!

Hope you are all doing well and the scales are heading in the right direction!

xx
