Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Fasting today and I have just realised that the meal planned for tonight is baked potatoes which is a bit more carb heavy than I would normally choose on a fd. Any good ideas for toppings? I've got around 450 cals for dinner. Back up plan is to have tuna mayo and a big salad but I want something hot. Hmmm... Tuna mayo, big salad and soup is probably doable on those calories, isn't it?

Another Thursday faster here ....

Wedding / Engagement rings too big
My original wedding ring is so loose it just falls off if I straighten my fingers.
losing it on Lyme Regis beach while feeding the gulls and then finding it again was a memorable afternoon
So DH bought me another simple gold ring that is two sizes smaller to hold it on.
Cheaper than resizing and a permanent memento of how fat my fingers were.

Rani I'd have cottage cheese with chilli seeds.

Morris I use unsweetened almond milk, super-healthy. it has about 35 cals per 100ml, so I count a splash as 5 cals. Waitrose do this.

Unsweetened soya milk has only 30 cals per 100ml, but some warn against it, specially for those vulnerable to breast cancer. I gave it up.

Holland & Barratt have rice milk and oat milk, which are healthy, but have a few more carbs and cals.

On NFDs, I find oat cream goes very well with stewed rhubarb.

Just had my soup. OMG it was delicious and so decadent when I had stirred some spare double cream through it. In it was white and red onions, mushrooms, lardons, celery, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, parsnips and swede. So nice. With it I had some home made tomato, cheese and basil bread. Delicious.

Having just got back from Sainsburys with my ready meal for tonight... why do all the low calorie ready meals feature a dollop of carb? They're still on the low-fat idea.... what I want on FDs is something I can bung in the microwave which is lots of veg, some protein and a yummy sauce but not the rice or noodles. Does anyone do something like that?

Milk - for some reason up till this week I'd been overestimating the calorie content in the amount of milk I have in tea. I'm delighted by this as I'm a white tea addict! Skimmed is 35 cals per 100ml, so if you use ~30 mls per mug that's ~10 cals.

Waitrose have some ready meals with sweet potato as the carb and the M&S feel fuller longer does have carbs but less than most.

Errol, see if you can locate the "Look what we found!" sachets - they're in a black pouch. They are things like chicken tikka, chilli, meatballs etc in a sauce, but without the rice/ pasta/ potato bit. usually about 200-300 cals a pack.

thanks...I thought of the M&S ones but most of those are (IIRC) a bit too big for my FD - over the 400 cal mark.

Seems to me there's a gap in the market!

My older two aren't really fans of soup though DD will eat Heinz tomato. It is my baby (aged 8) who loves soup and will always try it. I am hoping they will have some of the bread with the chicken casserole tonight and I won't do rice with it in the hope they will want a carb.

And you should have no trouble preparing from fresh, woman!! With guns like yours would be piece of cake to peel the buggers (though maybe you'd want to cook this first before shoving down your gullet). No excuses....you're just being..LAZY!! ... (runs and hides amongst technical cooking equipment BC will never find)

It goes in the oven. Surely even you can manage closing the door first to prevent a squashy ceiling????.... hmmm perhaps not Hmm

Hi - signing in :)

Only on 2nd FD ever today. Did 7.30 pm Monday - 7.30 pm Tuesday on hot water and lemon with no problems.

Struggling a tiny bit today but I'm less busy - never sat still on Tuesday but wok is quieter so I'm noticing more.

I think this will be better in the long run though rather than spreading the calories out over the day as I'd be licking DH's plate of an evening - I'd rather fast completely then have a normalish dinner.

I'm on my 4th mug of lemon water... roll on tea time!

oh, I just meant whether you happened to have something appropriate soup-wise you could sub for the porridge according to Bigchocs suggestion. Because if you didn't then prob better to stick to what you had rather than derailing your first day. Smile But that's bye the bye now.

AAAAAAAAAAARGH!

Just back from dreaded first time in many years weigh in (only so I know my TDEE thingy). It's even WORSE than my worst fears.

I'm 5ft10 and weigh..........248lbs.

Gulp. Holy crap. That's 17st10 or 112.6kg and a BMI of 35.6 (well into the obese camp).

That would be a hellish total of 103lbs/7stone/47k I need to lose. Which, at 1lb a wk will take 2yrs.

Wellity-fuckity-crud. Am pretty teary-eyed and trembly as I feel so ashamed I let this happen. I'm only a size 18, I wanted to drop 3 dress sizes...I had no idea I would be sooooo gigantically heavy.

BUT on the plus-sized-side...apparently I'm allowed 2264cals on NFDs. That sounds mentally much.

Gulp.

I'm on my 3rd fd today. And the days have been ok. Having a 75 cal yog and satsuma for"lunch" but felt abit shaky after cycling home from work so thought I'd make myself a knorr stock pot drink 10 cals, two spring onions chopped up and it's really nice. A tiny bit salty so I do keep adding more hot water to the mug to dilute it. But defo worth a go.

I got some miso sachets for the first time today - not bad, makes a nice change from marigold - needed more water than it said else too salty but that's fine.

zzz Total sympathy, there's nothing worse than when the scales smack you in the face. If your clothes still fit it can be hard to notice (I blame at least a stone on bloody jeans with stretch in them). On the positive side if you're still a size 18 you probably have a good lot of muscle as well.

2 years does sound long, but imagine getting to the end of those two years and being the same size or having put on more. Even though it takes time you'll feel happier straightaway knowing you've got control and are getting healthier.

Bit of an x-post with 123 - that's the trouble with stock-cube type drinks, isn't it? The marigold I use is the lower salt one and even that's pretty salty! But extra hot water is no bad thing.
