Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I have 116 calories left. Any suggestions for what I can have later that won't set off the munchies?

I am so proud of myself. I did a FD!

Chocupid · 13/01/2014 19:05

Well done toffee I failed miserably today will have to do tomorow

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 13/01/2014 19:09

Hi

I haven't read any of the threads yet but will try and catch up once the DC are in bed.

I need to lose a couple of stone, at least, and somebody suggested the 5:2 plan. I must admit that I did dismiss it at first but have a holiday booked for August (first holiday abroad since October 2001!) so really need to crack on with doing something!

I have looked on the fast diet website and used their calculator. My BMI is 43.4, my BMR is 1252 and my TDEE is 1941. I don't do much exercise at the moment but will start walking everywhere while the DC are at school and I have the 30 day shred DVD, somewhere!

It feels like a huge task!

frenchfancy · 13/01/2014 19:12

Well done toffee. I would use the leftover cals on a milky drink to help you sleep.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 13/01/2014 19:13

Only just catching up

betsy thank you for the reminders to clench always good to get a reminder
bigchoc well done really inspirational
earslaps good advice re drink water. I know I don't drink enough on fast days. Which is sooooo stupid when breast feeding. Thanks for the reminder. Tomorrow is a fast day.

I'm planning to take dd swimming for the first time in 18 months (very bad mummy). I haven't shaved my legs in almost 3 months Blush so I'll need to tackle that issue before getting back in the water.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 13/01/2014 19:15

toffee well done in the fd. Not sure what you should have later, milky drink would be right up my street.

Geckos48 · 13/01/2014 19:19

Weighed myself this morning. 115 which isn't bad considering the complete junk food fest that was yesterday. Fasting Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday of this week.

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2014 19:33

AmeliaTopping
Welcome aboard. I think you have mistyped your BMI as its out of kilter with your TDEE ...
BUT, start tomorrow
read the tips and hints thread as its chock full of ideas
these threads are incredibly supportive - not just about food but also all of the mental issues that have led to food becoming part of the problem.

Toffee/Sausage
Old cat brought us a whole pound of raw sausages once, stolen from a neighbours kitchen counter
another night was two slices of doner kebab meat
and then the burger - stolen from a BBQ which meant treatment of his burned paws afterwards

CinammonGirl · 13/01/2014 19:34

Hi all, just wanted to join the thread! I'm new to this and my first fast day will be tomorrow. Feeling pretty good that this will be what cracks it for me - have been stuck in a cycle of crap eating since my DD was born almost three years ago and have about 4 stone to lose. Have tried unsuccessfully multiple times but I'm feeling good about this. I have a spin bike so have been spinning three mornings a week while DD is at playgroup and have roped DH into doing a yoga DVD with me tonight :) My plan for tomorrow having read the other advice threads is to skip breakfast, drink lots of hot water and lemon, try to save my calories for dinner (but have carrot sticks and houmous on standby if I need a little something) - dinner will be a roast red pepper with cous cous and a small amount of feta cheese. Wish me luck!

Not2bObvious · 13/01/2014 19:36

Well done Monday fasters, Tuesdays nfd is in sight!! I don't want to obsess too much in case I crack at the final hurdle but I think I'm in good enough shape to get through!
I have around 80 cals which I think I'll spend on a nice galaxy hot chocolate. Might help me sleep, do struggle a little on fd's.
Amelia if you adopt this WOL, you won't recognise yourself come August! Just take it one fast day at a time.
WasWondering I hope you see the results you want but like every plan I think you do have to give it a few weeks before changing to something else. Unless you enjoy lie carbing. Best of luck for a good week

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 19:37

chocupid - never feel you failed. You just changed the day you fast!

Milky drink not really cutting it Sad. I wanted something hard but actually I might not have anything at all.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 19:38

79 calories in case anyone wants to know.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 13/01/2014 19:40

Hi all!

Bread and wine, I was hospitalised with a kidney infection too before Xmas, yours must have been a nasty one, poor thing!

1st fast day of the week today went fine, I was cold too, but I think the temperature dropped loads down here today anyway (south west).

Didn't help I was working in a room with a broken radiator! So I drunk bucketloads of green and herbal tea - I couldn't bring myself to drink cold water!

Had a fab dinner - Patrick holford low gl chickpea curry with quinoa and loads of salad!

Going to do 16:8 tomorrow and count my kcals, finding it hard to find time for breakfast anyway as my commute is really long at the moment.

Do you all count exercise kcals on nfds? I plan to go for a run tomorrow. I know you're not supposed to count exercise kcals on FDs.

Jimjamatron · 13/01/2014 19:48

Hello! Can I join in too? I was watching a few threads ago and following 5:2. All was going quite well but I have just got out of the habit...have given myself a kick up the bum and will do a fast tomorrow. Hoping it's not too bad- I have been eating a lot of sugar/junk recently an always find a fast hard after eating rubbish. I realise this is my body trying to tell me something.

Anyway plan is tomorrow to just have herbal tea until As late in the day as possible then Might have salsa baked eggs for tea and some salad. Will save some cals for a milky coffee as a treat. Am actually looking forward to feeling empty. I feel proper grim and bloated today.

Good luck anyone fasting tomorrow. I am going Togo and read the thread from the beginning now- you are an inspirational lot!

Sorry about any typos etc. I can't work out how to preview on my phone.

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 19:55

Well done Toffeeeee !!!
I have followed you all the way today. And it has really made my day that you've managed your FD.
Well done

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 19:56

Well done Bigchoc too .

BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2014 19:57

Everyone, thanks for all the support, old & new 5:2 pals; it's what makes it possible to change bad habits.
Flowers Smile
Cuckoo: Our double act helps me a lot, but um, I'm easily old enough to be your Mum. So, I'll have the [proud face] when you do your 1st BigGirl press-up.

Betsy My name has grown on me. I remain greedy and I shall continue to enjoy sweet treats, but: in much smaller quantities, less often and only truly delicious ones.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2014 19:59

Toffee, well done on the FD [big chocolatey pat on the back]
Maybe BoyCat could 5:2 no-mouse days ?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 20:11

Thank you LilyJoandMe.

Thank you BCF.

I have told the cats they need a 7:0 no mice days. DH just told BoyCat to stop stock piling mice. He ignored DH.

I think my heart took about 2 hours to go back to normal. I see mice everywhere Hmm.

devoncreamtea · 13/01/2014 20:13

Hi all - newish person here too, don't manage to post often as have 4 small ones - but try to keep up with thread! Had failed fd today - sister in law very kindly sent over a slice of her birthday cake and I just could not resist it. Bah. Anyway, this eve did first go of 30 day shred - ahhhhh!! wobbly legs! Anyone else done it? I am not sure I will be able to fit it in everyday though....had rather a shock on the cales this morn as finally bought some - 11st 3!! - I thought I was about 10 ish! (am 5'3) - so actually have more like 3 stone to lose...better do something about my will power.

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2014 20:14

To all those starting 5:2 for the first time : welcome aboard

to all those restarting it after having become lazy last year - consider yourselves firmly kicked up the bum to get into shape in 2014

drink more water ...... while clenching Grin

turkeybaby · 13/01/2014 20:16

I've just finished my first fast day and feeling really good about it. After a couple of false starts over xmas (stupid time to start) i've started properly today.

I had - cup of tea, couple of grapes from dc's breakfast, coffee, banana, food doctor cuppa soup - with quinoa very filling - then just had 2 corn on the cobs with a little bit of butter for dinner.

And i feel fine! Not hungry.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 20:16

Do I have 2 lindor balls, just one or none? I would have none and feel really good but I need to make sure I eat enough. Is it fine to not eat the 500 on FD as long as I eat TDEE the others? I know I should know this Blush.

curveballs · 13/01/2014 20:19

Would really love it if my ds would kindly just go to sleep - been dreaming about dinner from the moment I finished my soup at lunch, and still I wait Hmm

BetsyBell · 13/01/2014 20:21

toffs It's fine to eat less than 500 :)

Is it possible to only eat 2 lindor balls? Not for me it isn't
