Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Just done the calculation again and it does appear that I have done something wrong!

I will put it all here so it makes a bit more sense.

Sex Female
Age 34
Height 5' 3.5"
Weight 11st 12.5lbs
Activity level Moderately active - 30 day shred and C25K (hopefully)

BMI 28.7
BMR 1442
TDEE 2236

I have no idea what I did wrong last time Blush

I would ideally like to get down to around 10st, possibly slightly less but would be happy with that.

I am going to start tomorrow but am at college in the evening so will try and do the first fast day on Thursday.

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 20:31

curve I have the solution...EAT THE KID!

I would; mine got very short bedtime stories tonight as there was a bowl of FD soup calling me loudly.

curveballs · 13/01/2014 20:35

Zzz his arm is looking very tempting lol

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 13/01/2014 20:36

curve zed getting a kids to sleep is just infuriating. We haven't quite cracked getting dd to stay asleep Sad

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 20:41

BetsyBell - I would be fine just eating two. Question is whether I should.

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 20:44

Luckily mine do sleep well, it's just that like curve they are starting to look all chubbly and delicious by 7pm on FDs...maybe just a small one, steamed with some lemongrass...or feck it just dip them both in Toffee's Lindors and be done with it!

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 20:48

Poor when she was It's enough to make you demented eh? We messed up with 1st DS and it took ages to sort him out, but by 9 months hard graft we'd done it; we took no prisoners when DD was born and she's been an angel. Please don't throw your Miso at me, I deserve a break after her horrendous birth!

frenchfancy · 13/01/2014 20:49

Don't do it toffee. It will spike your blood sugar and make you feel hungry just as you go to bed.

CJMommy · 13/01/2014 20:52

Hi folks

Really sorry that I can't keep up with this thread so haven't read back. However, just marking my place to say

Week One
x 2 FD's = x1 SV ..........3.5lbs off Grin

Just completed my third FD and pleased to say that I've come in at just under 500cals. As you all say, I can have it tomorrow!!

Good luck everyone!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 20:57

Thanks frenchfancy. Good advice and I will take it. I do feel like I want something but I doubt there is anything with low enough calories. Mmm, a banana?

Well done CJMmmy!

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 20:59

Cool cjmummy well done to ya!

mscnile · 13/01/2014 21:18

FD finished on 400 cals. I'm working away tomorrow, will have two hours there and back in car which used to be snacktastic, will be taking water and fruit instead... NFD so that at least is allowed!

Now will try to catch up with all your news...

TheBitchesOfWeestick · 13/01/2014 21:21

Welcome to all the new 5:2ers :) AmeliaTopping great name - When The Dragons Came is a firm favourite in this house Grin

Well, I never thought I'd say this but I have genuinely breezed through my FD today Shock Have walked lots, played with DD, had fun with DS after school, had a mate round with her little one, even been to a playgroup and not been remotely interested in the biscuits. This has never happened before!

Had a tin of soup for lunch and made a gorgeous veg chilli for dinner. Off to bed fairly soon but I do feel so different to the last time I (very half-heartedly) tried this WOE. Then, I hated it, felt deprived, had no energy and developed long lasting headaches after each fast day. Now, it just seems...normal.

What a difference one's headspace makes :)

curveballs · 13/01/2014 21:21

Food glorious food - was well worth the wait. Even if it was the strangest combination I have ever had - veg curry with a scrambled egg. Strangely worked though!

Well done CJMummy Smile

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 21:24

Catching up before I go to sleep . Wanting to know if Toffee is happy with her FD ?
Hope everyone else on FD has managed ok today. It's been lovely reading you.

Coveredinweetabix · 13/01/2014 21:28

BigChoc - congrats! That's brilliant.

MrsF - I hope your DD had a better day. They also gave my DD the wrong antibiotics when she had a UTI. The wrong ones were vile and did nothing to help her. So frustrating.

WhenSheWas - I've had two bad sleepers. DC2 is 19mths and slept through for three weeks before Xmas and then started teething again and went all out of kilter. He's slept through for the past couple of nights and I feel like a woman transformed.

Successful FD here. Still having to have my 4pm snack rather than just lunch but that snack is now down to about 60cals rather than 100cals.

Hello newbies! Some of you are posting excellent early losses. For those that aren't, hang in there. In the first two months, I lost something like 4lbs but then lost another 6 in the following month.

LilyJoAndMe · 13/01/2014 21:28

Well done msnile, curve and bitches,
Still waiting for Toffee check- in ...

Peplum41 · 13/01/2014 21:33

Oh good, just noticed the time, successful FD, feels great to be back after enforced week off.

chocupid hope your next fast is a goody.

amelia sounds better. I was wondering whether you'd miss typed your bmi, or whether you were really really short and about 30 stone! That's not so bad, you're the same height and weight as me, but I've lost 2 stone.

I decided to clean kitchen floor and early bed with a book once I got to the last post. I'm not pulling the fridge out though, toffee. Last time I did I found some blueberries and a Rolo! (plus all the usual grime)

dotty much as part of me would love dh to cook rst dinners, millionare shortbread and baked Alaska, I would be VAST. His culinary skills are stretched by a fried egg and he can't wash up to save his life. He's good at getting the fire going and car stuff though, which I'm useless at.

turkeybaby · 13/01/2014 21:35

Reading through this and can't work out what SV is...?

Its all such good inspiration i'm glad i've started

curveballs · 13/01/2014 21:39

Turkeybaby it is scale victory. It took me a while and then I noticed there is a key at the title of the thread

turkeybaby · 13/01/2014 21:40

Aaaahhhhh thx ;)

Chocupid · 13/01/2014 21:46

Thanks Toffee and peplum will try again tomorow.
Looks like its me and you cinnamongirl

Impressed with all you successful fasters today, it does help to reset everything again when you get one under your belt.

Seems like ages since I did 2 good ones in a week, so the belly is creeping back Blush could do with sleeping through tomorow Grin

Peplum41 · 13/01/2014 21:46

Hi lilyjo, you feeling a bit better? It's mad how obsessed you get with people you don't even know isn't it?

Well done mscnile, cj and curve. Good story bitches, glad you have given it another try, hopefully it will encourage others.

Loads of fab posts today, wish Id read about exercise in fasted state before tea though.

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2014 21:47

Scale Victories = the number heading where you want it to go
Non Scale Victories = fitting back into small clothes or unexpected compliments or succeeding at a form of exercise
or just having a great day

Peplum41 · 13/01/2014 21:53

chocupid the fasts I do after my night shifts usually go well. The others do not, and some days you embrace the empty feeling, others its a chore. What do you think stuffed it up for you?

Procrastination of kitchen floor cleaning happening now.
