The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

hecan I deliberately plan at least one NFD per week when I go several hundred over TDEE. It helps keep a high TDEE, enables me to enjoy social occasions and generally lets me slob out is good for my mental well-being.
I compensate by going lower on other NFDs.

Yesterday, I only had 1800 cals (600 below) with no starches or fruit.
Today will be 2600- I had a huge fried steak and wedges, plus a chicken mixed salad, small breakfast and planned tea.
Saturday or Sunday will have 3000 cals (so Monday is part of a 36-40 hr FD)
etc

btw: Most people don't need to count NFD cals, but I decided to start, because I am so greedy eat too much on NFDs if I don't.

Papayasoup · 08/01/2014 13:48

elfina I had terrible trouble sleeping when I first started. It took a few weeks for it to pass but it did and sleep, or lack thereof due to DD, has been normal ever since.
I also echo the recommendations to drink more.

To those getting headaches could this be due to cutting out carbs - on top of dehydration or caffeine withdrawal? I know that when I've gone carb free my first few days are always very headachy. Funnily enough now I'm low carb several days during the week and don't get any of those feelings.
I think it is because my body has settled into a good and more nutritious rhythm

Papayasoup · 08/01/2014 13:52

2nd fast day of the week done although might be closer to 700 but I'm happy with that. I think that is the maintaining routine I am slipping into, either one 500 day and 1 1000 day or 2 in the 6-800 range. I'll see over the next few weeks if it works although I probably want to go 2-3lbs lower first to fully shift Christmas, holiday effect but I'm not stressing it

Farewelltoarms · 08/01/2014 14:02

To anyone who is sad about not having lost any weight over Christmas…
I put on 5lb!

And that is from weighing myself on Christmas eve so it doesn't even include the 2 lb that I put in the run up of extreme drinking. In about 9 days I put on that amount of weight. And being in my 40s, it no longer seems the case that weight quickly put on is weight quickly lost.

I'm 5'7 and had gone from 10.13 (Easter) to 9.12, then up to about 10.3 post summer holidays, down to about 9.13 (on a good day) and am now 10.6. I'm still very pro the diet as 10.6 is a lot less than I was a year ago, but it's a bit depressing that I never seem to get to the maintenance phase.

This week I'm doing three fasts, not because of the fasts so much, more to reduce the NFDs.

And yes sometimes I have trouble sleeping on fast days. I make sure I wear v thick bed socks and drink lots of water at about 6pm (i.e. not leave my hydration until too late).

cathyandclaire · 08/01/2014 14:10

Day 2 here. Swanned effortlessly through first fast day on Monday probably still digesting take-away curry from the night before really didn't need to eat before 7pm but today I want to gnaw off my arm. Had gallons of coffee ( I can't give it up, so I need to save some calories for the milk) and just resorted to a few large tablespoons little 0% Greek Yog with some berries. It's going to be a loooooong afternoon.

EarSlaps · 08/01/2014 14:25

Mmmmmmmm, just had New Covent Garden Goan Chicken and Lentil soup- only 154 calories for half a carton and seriously filling. I didn't even have a full portion and feel very happy. I'd highly recommend it.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 14:30

Hmm, just musing after reading BCF's post. I never go over TDEE and never stuff my face. Is that where I am going wrong??

Sophiste · 08/01/2014 14:32

Earslaps I love soup for a FD lunch. Have just had my Pret a Manger Butternut Squash & Sage soup from their "Soup-er Healthy" range. Just 104 cals per pot, warming and delicious.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 14:40

toffee Why not try it for a couple of weeks. See if it shakes things up a bit, knocks you of the weight plateau, or you might just prefer the variety anyway.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 14:43

But don't eat 3000 cals - a mad gym bunny like me probably has a higher TDEE (2400) than you. Try adding 20% on one NFD and compensating on another NFD or two.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 14:51

I had planned on weighing myself tomorrow so should I wait until after them to stuff my face,BCF?

I am sure it isn't helping that mostly I am not counting calories and have no real clue what I am eating. I am guessing it I sunder as I rarely have breakfast, lunch has been soup for quite a lot of this week and then dinner is pretty healthy. I did have some Kendal mint cake last night though Smile. Maybe I will have some of the apple cake I made later.

Elfina · 08/01/2014 15:33

Thanks chaps. Haven't eaten but I feel very very shaky...was much easier on monday (first FD). Any ideas why this might be?

TalkinPeace · 08/01/2014 15:46

Elfina
In all honesty - your body had no idea what you were doing to in on Monday. Today it knows. Wink

Elfina · 08/01/2014 15:49

Does anyone ever faint?

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 16:03

Elfina You can eat something - you've got 500 calories at your disposal - use some of them :)

TalkinPeace · 08/01/2014 16:09

it is better to make it a 750 calorie "mini fast" than to feel ill

mscnile · 08/01/2014 16:20

Been out all day, now I have a brief window home alone before everyone else gets in, had to have a biscuit when I got in, but apart from that have only had water and coffee (with a splash of milk) since 7pm yesterday. Will have soup in about an hour.

Toffee - I go over TDEE every weekend, both days... perhaps you do need to binge a bit?

Elfina - I don't usually feel faint but today had a headache driving home, dehydration I think.

I do have trouble sleeping after FD (can't remember who asked that!) - partly through being cold (a hot water bottle helps!)

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 16:22

I agree with Tip - even eating 1000 calories is still a marked reduction of a normal days eating.

Work your way down to 500 calories - it's doesn't matter how long it takes to achieve this! Days, weeks, months - it's all good.

We are making changes for life here, not looking for quick fixes.

No one should need to be feeling shaky and ill.

Elfina · 08/01/2014 16:29

Hmm, I wonder why I am then :-( I may call it quits for today, I guess I can try again tomorrow. Bit disappointed as I've basically done no work from feeling horrendous, and now I've probably got to go through it all again tomorrow, so it wasn't even worth it :(

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 16:33

Elfina Why don't you have a bit to eat now, along with a large drink, a small dinner later and then you've still done a fast day. Don't do another one tomorrow. Leave it until Friday or next Monday.

TalkinPeace · 08/01/2014 16:36

Toffee Maybe the magic trick bit is to make sure you partake of a TDEE's worth of alcohol at the weekend .... that's my secret Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 16:38

Binge enjoyers, talk to me. Are you eating beyond hunger? [thick emoticon} Having learnt to eat when hungry and stop when not I am Confused about how that will help sort me out.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 16:42

I wouldn't mind a buttered crumpet right now. Veg soup planned at 7pm plus 1 sprout from the kid's tea Grin.

Eatriskier · 08/01/2014 16:43

drools at the thought of a buttered crumpet

mscnile · 08/01/2014 16:44

mmm buttered crumpets I can have some one tomorrow though Grin

TIP I also drink my TDEE in alcohol every weekend, works for me!
