The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I'm in at about 700 today. Still a fast as far as I am concerned Smile.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 19:37

Bitches (see, toffee, I'm doing it too)
I am totally addicted to all nut butters: pnut, almond, cashew, hazelnut.
Sometimes I eat nut butters out of the jar - and then fall in it, after the spoon.
Even worse than whole nuts, which one at least must chew.

I love any nut butter with banana and cinammon on toast, mmm.

btw: Our 5:2 deviant porridge and deviant rice pud contain pnut butter.

A small alert for you all, in case I am not here when this one runs out:

There's a new thread ready and waiting here.

Please finish this one first :)

Elfina · 08/01/2014 19:52

choc perhaps it is the running. I ran the worst, most painful 5k of my life today Hmm

I'm still breast feeding DD. I didn't think it would make any difference as she's 14 months and at nursery all day, but she does feed through the night.

I'm recovering from shingles, too. Can you not fast when you're getting over a virus? I would have thought it would help you recover, I.e., enhancing cell repair, etc.

Ergh. Well, I have a hot chocolate now. Never mind, will chalk this week up to experience and try not to beat myself up. Marathon, not a sprint...

DottiestDoris · 08/01/2014 19:54

Toffee, actually cheese is incredibly good for you. I'm new to this but would definitely think it's a sensible calorie topper-upper. Yes, it has highish levels of fat and salt, although these depend on milk type (cow, goat or sheep etc) and whether it's hard or soft, but the calcium and vitamins are also in high levels. If you buy decent (not low fat) cheese I reckon you can it eat with a clear conscience. Like all things, it's moderation! Enjoy!

Elfina, have you survived?

DottiestDoris · 08/01/2014 19:55

Oop, cross post Elfina

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 08/01/2014 19:55

i can't keep up with you lot Shock

curveballs · 08/01/2014 19:59

Hi. Thought I would join this group, I have been reading this thread for a couple of days and I believe it is really going to help me on FD's.
I had my first ever FD on Monday, and found it surprisingly less difficult than I was expecting, that's not to say that my second one tomorrow is going to be as easy.
I have a fair bit of weight to lose. Managed to lose over 2 stone last year for my wedding by doing the Atkins diet, but as soon as I stopped I started piling the weight back on again. Now back to exactly the same weight I was pre-Atkins. Really believe this is the way forward and determined this time that the weight will stay off for good. Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 20:03

I love cheese and currently have tonnes in the fridge due to DH buying me 2 cheese hampers and being too ill over Christmas to eat it!

I am looking forward to a toasted crumpet, butter and cheese tomorrow.

mscnile · 08/01/2014 20:06

elfina be kind to yourself, recovering from shingles and breast feeding are tough enough! never mind running and fasting too!

bcf yay for the return of deviant porridge!

bitches (I think, I lose track!) I'm a peanut addict, but not of the buttered variety.

I'm on 400ish now, might have a crumpet, but will probably save it for tomorrow. That's my 2 FDs done for this week, I feel much better for them and am looking forward to the next 4 NFDs!

zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 20:07

mmmmmmmmm cheeeeeeese! I got a ceramic thingy from Santa that you roast a whole Camembert in...then dip toasted bread into the goo....I wonder how much of my TDEE a whole Camembert is, I don't think I can have that tomorrow!

mscnile · 08/01/2014 20:07

Welcome curveballls

toffee I'll save my crumpet for tomorrow with you

MazzleDazzle · 08/01/2014 20:08

Welcome curveballs and well done on your first successful fast day. It is easier than you expect, isn't it?

Hope the second one goes just as well! Keep us posted.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 08/01/2014 20:09

zed i've eaten baked camembert on NFDs, it's what else you've eaten that day that counts Wink

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 20:11

Now you have said that, mscnile I will be good and not have it earlier Grin.

zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 20:17

OMG leastaccomplished I love this WOE! Bring on the NFDs...though a whole cheese would need a whole baguette, and then I really would be lost!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 08/01/2014 20:20

maybe a whole baguette might be pushing it, but some, with salad and raw peppers to dip as well as the bread - why not!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 08/01/2014 20:20

Elfina Thanks and ouch to the shingles you poor love!

It could well help with cell repair but suspect it's early days for that. Your body is dealing with a lot at mo so not surprising you've struggled a bit. Enjoy your hot choc and make sure you do have something extra if feel the need. This doesn't/isn't/shouldn't feel punishing, and would make it feel very hard to sustain longterm.

Quite right on the whole marathon not sprint. If that really is how you feel, then I think you will do just fine on this woe/wol. We all have our different stories but as another newbie was saying earlier (so sorry I can't scroll back at mo and there are few new names!) we are all different, and yet somehow the same with this wol!

On that note... Well Done! to all new starters. If you have made any inroads it all counts. You will get there, and for most (at least ones who post = my disclaimer), it does get easier. So keep at it!

Biscuits how is the job??? (whispers... p.s am pm-ing you my address. Bagsy first dibs on ice-cream take homes!) Wink

How you feeling?, and well done on fasting through your first week! I salute you (salutes)

curveballs · 08/01/2014 20:31

Thanks mscnile and MazzleDazzle for the welcome Smile

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 08/01/2014 20:32

Zedzedzed - it was zzz wot said it! Just went back and had a look.

Feeling slightly bleurgh here! Might've been bit premature after Xmas blow outs to eat quite so much tonight. My 'I am full' indicator doesn't seem to have reactivated itself yet!

Am belching and groaning like a right wotsit here whilst eyeballing the chocolates

Come back 5:2 - save me from myself! Grin

zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 20:32

Hiya curve I'm brand new too, first fast today...welcome, and woo-hoo!

curveballs · 08/01/2014 20:37

How have you found your first fast zedzedzed? Good luckSmile

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 20:45

Elfina and other BFers: Official advice is to do 1000 cal FDs, not 500. You are also recovering from shingles, so not wonder you feel grotty !

Some BFers can manage 750, but that is the lower limit and only when completely healthy.
So, you must use your full 1000 cals for now.
Later, when you are fully recovered from shingles, then IFF you feel good on 1000-cal FDs, you can gradually try coming down to 750.

zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 20:47

curve it's been fine all day, am a bit hungry now I've actually eaten though!(must be all this cheese talk). Am most worried about non-fast days though, keeping under control yes, but more about not eating enough and sabotaging the whole thing! How've you found NFDs?

MrsBungle · 08/01/2014 21:04

Hello everyone :). Can I join?
I did my first fd on Monday and it was ok although I did 600 calories instead of 500. I'm on a fd again today and have had 490 calories. I'm feeling very motivated so far!
