The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

eatriskier I did stalk your photos already! WOW! That's amazing! What's ridiculous is that I've done this before, I've been an 8 and a 20 and everything in between, many times. But I've never been a 10/12 for 5yrs say. That's what I really want, to nail this, finally, longterm, so my daughter never sees this struggle and just learns to eat till she's full and run till she's tired, y'know?

RavenousRunner · 08/01/2014 09:22

Happy I stayed down again today, despite having to go out to lunch for work again yesterday (mushroom ragu with polenta, yummmm). Had a miserable run this morning though - 2 miles into 5 I thought I might have to pack it in. I'd forgotten how not eating many carbs at dinner is great on the scales but miserable on my stamina!

Finding this harder than last time because I have so little ability to plan things out - I loved getting everything sorted on MFP the day before, and as I was doing all the shopping and cooking I knew what was coming. DH does the weekday cooking now, and though he does healthy things it's hard to plan when I don't know what's coming. I would choose difference lunches etc if I knew I was having pasta for dinner rather than fish and salad. Perhaps it's good though as it keeps me from getting too manic...anyone else in a similar situation?

(And no, he won't plan ahead of time and tell me - dinners seem to depend on what catches his eye in the shops after the school run!)

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 09:33

Zed I'm excited for you because I think this could be a life changing experience for you. No more crash and burn! Let's get you healthy Grin

FWIW this is the only time in my life I've been intentionally slim through healthy means - teen years were full of disordered eating, early 20s were full of food intolerances (entirely due to previous awful habits I'm sure) - slim then but ill all the time, horrible. Mid to late twenties I was in a better place food wise but then babies took up a few years with the usual ravages to your body they bring plus weight gain and loss, then weight on again. 2 years ago I took control, realised I'd become medically obese, not just a bit overweight. I decided I was in charge of my body and I wanted it to be healthy - so I started eating mindfully and healthily, moving around a lot more. 1 year ago I discovered 5:2 and I've never looked back - it just fits.

For the most part I eat clean - mostly home made, natural food as possible - I avoid foods with unintelligible ingredients lists! If I want a sweet baked treat then I make something delicious for the family to share.

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 09:38

Ravenousrunner Do I have the trauma of someone else cooking for me all week? Sadly no!!! Grin

Ok, what I would do if I did happen to have this dilemma, for example, pasta twice - just have a smaller portion of the pasta in the evening - loads up on the veggies/salad and sauce but less of the carbs.

Would that work?

Or just eat food at lunchtimes that I know he won't cook?

RavenousRunner · 08/01/2014 09:45

It is really nice having him cook, but since I did all the cooking for 13 years I am having a hard time ceding control of the kitchen (everything is put away in the wrong place! This isn't the hummus the kids like!).

The good thing is he serves salad with everything so I can always just eat that - salmon twice the other day was a bit much. It's more not knowing how many calories are in anything that I find difficult - hoping I can learn to be mindful and just stop when I'm full, but that can be a slippery slope...aiming for no seconds on NFDs generally unless they're veggies which I think should help.

It's amazing how quickly the self-control falls back into place once you get off the overeating roller coaster.

BetsyBell · 08/01/2014 09:51

ravenous I totally understand - I enjoy the control (and prefer my own cooking!). Yes if you can stick to 1 helping of carbs, 1 helping of protein and as much green stuff as you like and you'll be fine.

It might be (as a ravenous runner) that you do need to have seconds of carbs and protein, but wait and think about it rather than mindless scoffing - better to have more of the good stuff at meal time rather than falling into late evening snack attacks!

zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 10:08

Thanks betsyb it's funny how everyone's story is different and yet the same.
Yeah, I love to cook too, and I love to eat, obviously! I'm not super-crunchy but I always cook from scratch with the best I can afford and just occasional shortcuts, but I don't buy readymeals or much processed or diet food as I don't like the taste (plus all the nasties).
I'm less a busy working girl eating crayfish Pret on the go and more a Nigella Lawson, at home with the babies, baking bread, roasting beef, plenty of olive oil, loads of green veggies...drool. So pretty healthy choices really, but but since moving in with my partner and having these bloomin babies, moderation and portion control have gone out the window...I feel like we're always celebrating something!
So that's where the starving myself comes in, because I don't like dull food, I'd rather have nothing...and eat it tomorrow.
Yes, it is exciting, because it feels like this might, finally, be a good fit. Chubby-fingers crossed!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 10:10

Feeling Blush now for moaning. Thanks everyone.

I am feeling a bit Sad. Heard today my son had broken a child's toy. Parent fine with it. I told him off. She said I shouldn't have as it is done. I always feel like I need to be seen to be disciplining the kids when I hear they are naughty though and now feel like I have got that wrong as well. His little face looked so confused and that is the last thing I said to him before school Sad.

I really need to learn not to let things get to me so much. I feel inadequate and I always have.

Feeling hungry but trying to fast today.

About to make dorset apple cake as requested by DS2 yesterday so hopefully he will enjoy that.

Good luck to everyone fasting today and those on NFD, enjoy!

muffins · 08/01/2014 10:35

Zed good luck, I too am trying to regain my figure after 3 babies.

FD here today, feeling fine, 2 hrs til lunch, just had a nice cup of tea. Caved and got on the scales this morning, 11.2.0 so 2.2lbs down from Sunday yay, going to try and not weigh again til Sunday now.

Hope everyone else is doing ok today

muffins · 08/01/2014 10:37

Toffee I hate the guilt of parenting sometimes, rest assured that your DS will have forgotten all about it when he comes home. Doesn't make you feel any better though I know. Hugs.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 10:55

Thank you very much muffins. Flowers I really appreciate your post.

I am doing what I do best when sad or upset or stressed and I cook. Dorset apple cake in oven, potatoes boiling for DH's Cheese and Potato Pie and I have got a recipe for a chocolate and vanilla cake type thing to make tomorrow.

frenchfancy · 08/01/2014 11:39

Good summary blog post here especially for those new to 5:2.

ImABadGirl · 08/01/2014 11:43

FD for me and feeling good, my 16 hrs is up at 1230 but going to wait until I'm hungry, I have vegetable soup waiting for me, I feel so much better now my mind is in the right place Smile

hecandtob · 08/01/2014 11:59

Hello - I'm a newbie. Started this last week. FD on Thurs, then this Monday and tomorrow. FIndind the FDs pretty OK.
Unfortunately, went out last night and had one too many glasses of wine which I know I shouldn't because then I feel like demolishing a bag or two of the DC's choc buttons when I get in, which I did!! so cross with myself... No self control!
ANyway, my question is this... is this redeemable? I went over my TDEE by 400 cals! Can I just cut back today's normal eating day's total by 400 cals? will that work? Or should I make today a FD?
Help... don't want to fail at this.

Elfina · 08/01/2014 12:15

Does anyone have difficulty sleeping on FD nights?

hopefulgum · 08/01/2014 12:42

Thankyou for that link Frenchfancy, I just printed a bunch of her recipes which I can't wait to try.

frenchfancy · 08/01/2014 12:42

hecan If yesterday was not a FD then it isn't an issue. Think of your TDEE as being an average over your 5 NFDs. And even then it is only an ideal, if you go a bit over you haven't failed.

When I first started 5:2 I didn't even count on non fast days. Concentrate on your FDs and relax the rest of the time. That is the beauty of this WOE and why it is sustainable long term.

Elfina · 08/01/2014 12:56

Talk to me people - am struggling! Have been for a run this morning, and am fasting. Really struggling. All I can think about is smoked mackerel and my headache, and I have work to do. Urgh!

PoshPaula · 08/01/2014 13:03

elfina yes I have trouble sleeping after a FD.

Southeastdweller · 08/01/2014 13:07

elfina Get some low cal drinks inside you quickly and remember:

you can have it tomorrow

TalkinPeace · 08/01/2014 13:14

Elfina
lots of fluids - if needs be a large glass of skimmed milk - stuff all calories, but enough to get your system rehydrated

dehydration is a really common problem for people starting out fasting

actually scratch that - dehydration is a really common problem
lots of people drink too little and thus eat too much

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 13:17

Toffee You are a great Mum, always cooking incredible food, washing clothes, cleaning up after them (and that's just for the cats !)
Don't take things so seriously, just do your best and move on.

Also, you managed to achieve SWATH (Same Weight After The Holidays), well done !
Was this the 1st year recently that you managed that ? It was for me and I am really chuffed, so give yourself a pat on the back.

Don't under-rate yourself or your achievements, Toffee.

TimeToPassGo · 08/01/2014 13:29

Doing a kind of hybrid WW / FD today! Low points is the plan so I have plenty for the weekend.

I know I'm not doing a pure 5:2 diet at the minute but it is really helpful having lost the fear of hunger. And the WW is helping me avoid the feeding frenzies in the evening. So far I've lost 4lbs! Definitely first week loss and all that but hoping I can find a middle way until I get a grip on the portion sizes and evening munchies.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 13:35

BigChocFrenzy - I am certain it is the first time I have been the SWATH as before and I can see that I am maintaining really but what stresses me is I managed to put 2 stone on without noticing so I don't want to do that again.

I have hoovered all downstairs, tided out the bureau and games/art cupboard. Put some activity books in the car for DD and DS2 to do. Had a chat with BoyCat who had a lot to say to me but I have no idea what though I did have to tell him to stop scratching at my carpet and not to wipe wet dirty paws on me. Crumbs. He is on my bed! He had better have had a bath. Done the aforementioned cooking, 2 wash and drier loads and not emptied the dishwasher that has finished.
