The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

The crumpet was got out of the freezer last night so I doubt it is that yummy tbh. You're not missing much.

Hello again

Well I managed my first fast day. Managed somewhere in the region of 500 calories. One wheatbix with milk lunch and fish and salad for dinner. Plus tea with milk. Did get headache so must try to drink more water. I have not pigged out today either which is strange. See what happens when I put the children to bed. Allot of evening munchies here although if I am honest that is down to loneliness and boredom.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 17:21

Don't be lonely or bored, MrsPear. Talk to us and paint your nails.

farrowandballs · 08/01/2014 17:26

sHi all sorry about my terrible posts last night I am not good on my phone! Wanted to say a big thanks for the motivational comments. And wow at TIP's photos! Amazing and so inspiring. On second fast today. Broke fast with a grilled chicken thigh at 2.30pm cos was ravenous and have made a big pot if veg soup to keep me going til bed.
I found it difficult to eat yesterday in my NFD. Had a boiled egg for breakfast and then forgot to eat again until tea time. Only managed about a thousand calories altogether so am going to make a special effort tomorrow to eat my requirement. Ia it normal not to feel hungry on NFDs?
Really enjoying this thread. So supportive and encouraging. I'm feeling excited and confident about the long term possibilities of this way of eating!

farrowandballs · 08/01/2014 17:36

Wow just seen eatriskier's photos too! Aghhhh so excited!

One of the interesting aspects of this WOE is that once you get the hang of portion control and two fast days,
on the other five days
all those processed "healthy" foods can stay in the supermarket where they belong.

Its DHs birthday today so for lunch he really craved what he had for lunch when we first met 30 years ago .....
slabs of white bread, butter, 1/4 lb applewood smoked cheddar, branston pickle and a big bag of crisps

because fasting is tomorrow

and I'm currently drinking champagne while he plays minecraft with DS
before we have pork bellies and home made chips (and side salad) for supper

once you are in the habit of eating one or two small meals a day and one good sized one washed down with wine at weekends hitting TDEE is not a problem Wink

TalkinPeace · 08/01/2014 18:06

PS : as many of you know I live in south Hampshire
if you live within range and have kids between 4 and 14 (or are a science kid at heart), PM me Wink

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 18:10

TiP - I have had some applewood cheddar this week. How funny.

I just don't feeling hungry. A couple of mouthfuls and then I have had enough. I feel like I would have to eat when I am not hungry which goes against all I have learnt Confused.

I am having veg soup (again) for dinner but might go mad and grate some cheese on it. Even with my 1 sprout and 5 chips earlier I am sure I must be under 500 for a FD.

RavenousRunner · 08/01/2014 18:13

Elfina did you say you'd run this morning? I never, ever run on a FD as I feel awful, and in the way that makes me think I'm not properly refuelling my body rather than just wanting to eat biscuits. One stress on your body per day is enough IMHO. I try to do some yoga and walk a fair amount on FDs, but if I run I need to get some nutrition in or not only do I feel miserable, my running the next day will be seriously affected.

If you're feeling that bad have a piece of wholemeal toast with peanut butter or some fruit and yogurt, and don't worry about it!

TalkinPeace · 08/01/2014 18:14

Toffee
If you are not hungry, don't eat
BUT
make what you do have that little bit more gastronomic and richer
to make more of a differential between FD and NFD
so, parmesan shavings andor cubes of ham into soup, or salad with vinaigrette on the side

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 18:18

I am definitely having cheese on my soup then! If I could have been bothered I could have fried off some pancetta too but I have spent loads of time in the kitchen today and just want to sit on my bum, eat my soup and watch tv. I am making more soup tomorrow and will pick a cream of xxx one I think. I also might make some bread. Yum.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 18:40

Elfina I did 800 cal FDs for the first 3 months and even then felt very hungry. However, I now find sub-500 cals very easy.
Why not aim for 800 for your next FD, especially if you exercise too - I train intensively 5-6 days per week, so I think that is why it took me so long at the beginning.

Just ease into it would be my recommendation.

Not2bObvious · 08/01/2014 18:49

Applewood cheese....drool, all I ever have in my fridge is reduced cheddarSad I can't have nice cheeses, too tempting. I need to eat more nice food on nfds, still trying to be good since I gained those pesky 6.6 pounds in a month. FD tomorrow and I'll be honest I'm not looking forward to it. But hey ho, it's 1 day and then Friday I might just treat myself to some nice cheese, push the boat out!
Hoping for a good WI Friday, that blasted new scales better get on my side or it's for the high jump!! I can imagine bringing it back to the shop and they asking what's wrong with, and me saying I don't like it's attitudeWink

BigChocFrenzy · 08/01/2014 18:49

Toffee Those of us who save 10-20% extra cals for 1 or 2 days per week aren't binging, just having indulgent meals: olive oil, cheese, chorizo, cream, nuts, choc are delicious, but calorie bombs that should be planned carefully.
i think Bssh, Betsy, Tip save cals for the weekend, but it is definitely not for everyone, as you must compensate for that 10-20% elsewhere.

Also those who like Wine (one of the few vices i don't have) can easily rack up the grape cals.

TheBitchesOfWeestick · 08/01/2014 18:52

Second fast day over, although probably closer to 600 than 500 as I awarded myself a couple of licks of peanut butter while making the kids' toast. BUT I did manage to resist the kids' toast, which is a marvel in itself - toast and peanut butter is like crack to me. And I did quite a bit of walking with pushchair today, so hopefully things will balance out.

Actually do feel sated now. Hooray! Was certainly hungry all day (and MrsPearI can relate to the boredom too, it's illuminating how bored I get without the prospect of eating nice food...I love my DC but being at home with small children is pretty tedious sometimes). However, all day I kept myself going with the thought that (a) I can eat it tomorrow (b) if I go off piste now, I will have suffered being hungry earlier in the day for nothing and (c) my jeans already feel a tad more comfortable (might be wishful thinking but what the hey!)

A few more details about my story, since I've been so inspired by everyone else's: this is as much about the health benefits as weight loss for me, as there is type 2 diabetes in my family and I had gestational diabetes during last pregnancy. Added to that, my youngest cousin has inoperable bowel cancer and her oncologist has recommended that first cousins be screened as a precaution. Awaiting my appointment for bumcam has made me reflect that I really, really want to be around for my children and hopefully one day my grandchildren, not to mention wanting to live my life to the fullest. So I need to do everything I can to make it happen.

Also, I want to look good naked again Grin

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 08/01/2014 18:55

Toffee sorry if this has been suggested/no good, but have you thought about trying 6:1 for a bit?? Might help get things moving plus it might help increase your appetite again.

I find myself wondering about the same problem sometimes because my appetite is so much smaller on nfd. I don't calorie count though so can't say where I'm at regards intake, however I have been continuing to lose so I'm not concerned yet. I never deprive myself/feel deprived. I also seem to manage overindulging on the weekends so it may be averaging out any weekly deficit.

You maintained over Xmas - Congratulations!! As dd would say... that is Epic! Grin

I however managed to gain 7 lbs. Did first fd in 3 wks yesterday. Sneaky glimpse at scales this morning -3lbs.

So am celebrating tonight with shish kebab and chips with all the extras! Grin

Fd again tomorrow. Love this woe!

Headaches/Insomnia -
I had both. They went after few weeks. DRINK WATER until it's coming out your ears!

Seriously - it is the secret key to this, and any weight loss. Also helps get rid of hunger too, as an added bonus!

I have had trouble sleeping this past week. Headaches starting up again as well. I only had my first fd yesterday though, but have been gradually reducing the crap/booze since last week (by no means perfectly!). So I think if it is diet related - then it isn't necessarily a 5:2 issue, more a withdrawal from the wrong stuff issue. Combined with dehydration......so.....

DRINK WATER

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 08/01/2014 19:05

Well done mrspear I'm on a fast day too. Am 90 cals under allowance so far so need to maintain the willpower this evening

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 08/01/2014 19:11

Bitches -
a) there are a lot of peanut crack addicts on here, you are in good company!
b) the biggest difference I think most of us notice are clothes/measurements related. Much more so than numbers on scales, which is why measuring is such a good idea at start. Not that I did! Though am tempted to now anyway. (I've got 3 stone still to lose)
c) Good Luck with bum cam!! Keep us posted.

Has anyone out there seen the foxy MrsF recently?? Where are ya? You fasting? Or have we lost you under a mountain of cheese and pepper nuts??? XXX

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 19:14

Thanks everyone. I have had my soup with some lovely cheese on top. I have had that soup 4 times this week and still not bored with it. Good job really. I do drink lots but I think I just aren't eating enough calories. The 6:1 idea really cheered me up as I just want to stuff my face for the fun of it but I am not hungry and just can't start eating when not hungry. You are all too good. You have broken me!! Grin. 41 years of food issues and you sort me in months but maybe too well!

I fasted Sun/Mon for 26 hours, then today did 16 hours without food and ate at 1pm and 6.45pm. So is that my fasts for the week but doesn't mean I can now eat all the left over Christmas goodies or the yet to be opened goodies? No, not interested. See. Broken. Grin.

If I have not lost at least one pound tomorrow morning I will stuff my face all day and be sad. I still love to cook and bake but just can't get excited about a big plate of food anymore Confused.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 08/01/2014 19:17

Just thought I'd check in as it's been a couple of days. In the middle of 3 NFDs today. Went to pizza hut for lunch then I managed a 6 mile run. I wasn't going to have anything else today, but I was really hungry so had some egg on toast.

Work is going well, but there is a huge canteen that sells the loveliest looking meals. I might treat myself on the odd occasion. Tomorrow I will have to buy something as I haven't enough pack up things in. I am going to have chicken Caesar salad so I hope it won't be too many calories. It is another NFD though so it doesn't matter too much. I am still managing 16:8s during my NFDs and drinking plenty of water. That along with my swimming and running I've been doing should help not to gain too much. My weight has been low since my last FD on Monday. Will see on my official WI day on Sunday how well this week has gone.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 19:19
zedzedzed · 08/01/2014 19:26

Well...I did it! Very first fast day today, nothing to eat since last night (a low fat hot choc at 9pm) then just 3 coffees, a tea, water and a tsp of crunchy peanut butter (BitchesOfWee I am a pnb junkie too).
And now that the babes are in bed I'm having wholemeal bread, 1tsp light Lurpak and 1 slice smoked salmon with black pepper and coriander. It all adds up to 300cals, so I may or may not have toast and marmite and a low fat hot choc later. Not the most nutritionally balanced FD meal (I wasn't prepared for this and had nothing in the house...will be making soup next time), but hey, I DID IT! 'I can have it tomorrow' makes me grin with glee!
Looking forward to a regular day tomorrow and my first scary weigh-in to determine that TDEE...still can't decide whether to allow scales back into my home or just pop to Boots once a month...don't think I could resist hopping on all the time if they were here.

MazzleDazzle · 08/01/2014 19:32

Had below 500 cal FD yest.

Roughly 1700 cals today and an intense workout class this morning. There are mirrored walls and God, what an incredible bulk! My body is huge! I think I'm in denial as to what I actually look like. To be faced with the puffing, panting, red faced reality was pretty grim. [shame] Made me realise what a long way I have to go.

Toffee I too am trying to have a contrast between fasting and feasting, but as you say, when you're trying to avoid junk, drinking more fluids and not snacking, it can be difficult. I managed to boost my cal intake today with a handful of nuts and a milky drink. Been invited out for lunch tomorrow, if I can do it I'll aim for less than 500 cals and make it a FD, otherwise if i can't resist a pud I'll wait til Fri. Depends how I feel. Love the flexibility this WOL offers.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/01/2014 19:35

DH and I used to love cheese and crackers as an evening snack but haven't had it since doing this WOE. I am not sure they would count as a good calorie increase item!
