The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks for all the lovely comments about my story Smile

BennetGirl Congrats on your achievement, I'm really happy for you.

NFD for me and just had my 143rd mince pie of the month thus far Blush. It was from Gail's Bakery, which was recently marked by the Observer as the top rated mince pie so of course I had to see if they were right and yes it was lovely (Bssh - you know you need to go there and get one, if you already haven't...).

MariaRossa · 18/12/2013 14:18

Congratulations Bennet! Your post reminded me of something I've been thinking about recently, namely, when do you stop thinking of yourself as fat? I had a couple of NSVs last week: when doing the stretching/relaxation bit at the end of my exercise class, I became aware that I fit comfortably within the confines of my exercise mat. So what, you may ask? Well, I recall when I used to overlap, and my arms went on the floor! Blush The next day a colleague on maternity leave came in to show off her baby and couldn't get over how much weight I've lost, claiming I was half the size. I'm assuming baby hormones are affecting her eyesight, but sweet of her to say it! These things caused me to stand in front of my mirror and try to objectively assess whether or not I'd still call myself fat (self-obsessed, or what?) DP kindly said, "No, maybe still just a bit rounded." But it made me wonder, what do any of our superslimmers say - who've gone from Substantial to Slinky? Do you look at yourselves and think, "Yes, I'm slim" or is it still in your heads as "Slim for me?" Do you still feel fat in your heads?

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 18/12/2013 14:25

Even though Ive not been on these threads for long I am 1.5 stone (possibly even more) lighter than I was 2 years ago.

I still see myself as chunky or podgy. Ive never thought of myself as fat. Then again I always had issues regarding my belly and looking pregnant even when I was a size 8/10 in my late teens. Wish I had embraced it a bit more then.

TheRaniOfYawn · 18/12/2013 14:25

NFD for me today. I am still in shock about how well this is going and wondering why I spent such s long time thinking that 5:2 was a crazy fad when so far it has seen fast melting of me with virtually no effort. I am assuming that the weight loss will slow down soon and that I'll start finding the fasting harder, but I'm just enjoying this for the time being.

Scales victory for the time being is that at the start of the month I was hovering between 171 and 172lb with 35% body fat on the highly inaccurate body fat measuring scales. Today I weighed 163lb and my body fat was down to 33.5.

NSVs are that I have spent the day pulling my jeans back up and, more significantly, that I am feeling so much more relaxed about food. I was planning on having some chicken chicken and veg soup for lunch but I bought some really nice wow bread for making bread sauce and I almost didn't buy it because I would only be tempted to eat it. But I bought it, and I had a slice of delicious bread and butter with my soup, and I enjoyed it and then I didn't eat any more.

I feel as though the fasts seem to reset my body so that I can eat stiff that used to give me cravings, but that doing without them for a day reminds me that I can cope fine without those foods. I am finding am amazing new ability to eat less healthy foods in moderation if I feel like eating them. It feels like a wonderful freedom.

Tomorrow will be a FD, and expecting PMS to kick in so it might well be challenging. But I've got in some tins of Waitrose minestrone as recommended on the tips thread so I can have lunch if I'm desperate.

ELR · 18/12/2013 14:27

mrsflorrick I alwYs buy Abel and cole meat it really is good quality. Usually get a large chicken from them instead of a turkey at Christmas.
tip you are right about Aldwych one being fab for people watching. I often take DD as a treat we love their mini sliders too.
Just broken my fast with some homemade carrot and coriander soup, chucked in a handful of prawns for good measure too!

Southeastdweller · 18/12/2013 14:27

I agree that EarSlaps is looking great too.

TheRaniOfYawn · 18/12/2013 14:28

And I forgot to say Wooohoooooo! To Bennett.

TalkinPeace · 18/12/2013 15:26

mariarossa
we are programmed to be self critical about our appearance because we are a competitive species.

I look at pictures of myself and see the flabby bits under my arms
(swimming muscles) and the manky tummy.
Other people see a size 8 person "built like a teenager" !
I hate pictures of myself
but know that I look good to others

the best way to look at yourself is to go out for a walk and get one of those accidental 'reflection in a shop window' glances - only then will you see what others see

also, compare yourself with this site

NICE DRESS

and I love the fact that most of us are taking these pics in kids rooms or corridors rather than in our own glamorous boudoirs!

DinoSnores · 18/12/2013 16:01

No time to write anything but just needed to share that I am sooooo hungry! Dinner with the children in an hour though.

MrsFlorrick · 18/12/2013 16:05

ELR. Excellent. I will have a go at some A&C meat. We do have two excellent butchers locally who do organic although they are often sold out. And Waitrose organic beef is v good. Waitrose organic chicken not so much tends to be tough and stringy.

BetsyJingleBells · 18/12/2013 16:08

No apologies for waffling please!

Right, now I've said that just need to quickly vent in non-IF related topic

ARRRGGGGHHHHHHH
Day from hell, then argument with DC1 on way home about road safety after he ran into the road without looking. He normally goes home on his own and is normally sensible but lets face it, it only takes one car… so he ran off, with me having to be shouty ineffective mum behind him. We have a massive argument at home with me sending him off to his room. Now been aurally assaulted with 1Xtra blasting through the floorboards and Nintendo from DS2.
Again: arrrrrghrghrghrghgrhg

Ok, rant over, feel better now. I have at least not shouted about the crappy noise (though I guess this is a taste of things to come…)

Just waiting for shit neighbour to complain about the noise, now that will be fun

Wow! What a lovely thread catch up I've just had since this morning!

Love all of the NSV, 5:2 reflections and especially to BennetGirl!!!! Well Done you - can't imagine how chuffed you must be feeling right now Xmas Grin

I hope you stay with the thread. You will be FANTASTIC motivation next year for the post summer hols kick start. Your story will be just what is needed for those of us who no doubt fall off wagon during hols, or for those starting to think ahead to Xmas and goals just as you did this year!

My fd is still questionable as of this moment in time.

Can tell something had changed again after my last few weeks of easy fasts. So far today - which is first change as I'm normally strictly evening!- has been peanut chunky kitkat, big sq of 70% choc in an attempt to satisfy cocoa craving before eating the bulkier milk stuff, didn't work!, mini bake well and couple of mini stollen.
Xmas Grin

I'm on a generous 500 right now!!!!!!!

And my womb, belly, energy levels are implying tom due earlier than 28th. Be interesting to see what happens as been getting earlier every mth recently.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 18/12/2013 16:20

Betsy Brew Cake
Hate it when the little blighters do that!! Bad Ds scaring Mum like that!

Sympathies on the music front.

We had some very very VERY distressing news last wk.

Can't even bring myself to say it!

.....but as I'm typing Xmas Wink........

(whispers and winces)

Dd said she likes One Direction!

I honestly thought more of her than that! She's just back from school. Can't even bear to look at her!!

BetsyJingleBells · 18/12/2013 16:28

Oh good grief turkey you must disown her at once!

Grin

He's stopped now - just needed his 10 minutes of calm down time, glad I allowed him it without moaning about the music.

Loud music/bad taste = not life threatening
Running under a car = life threatening.

Picking yer battles and all that.

I really want to eat LOADS of food. Luckily nothing I have actually appeals to me (not even the tunnocks caramel wafer bars I know are in the cupboard).

What I actually want is a much nicer version of the school xmas lunch I had today, where the veg is not watery and the pigs in blankets are not cold.

Still, I hear there's some kind of event next week involving exactly that kind of food Grin

Cup of tea I think.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 18/12/2013 16:46

Hi all

Apologies but you have all been so chatty there is no way I can read it all and remember it enough to comment Blush.

Well done to everyone though for all your various successes.

Special Flowers for MrsF for not eating your house weight in chocolate what your twatty husband was being twatty. HUGE NSV that.

New house rule here - when we go out the mouse catchers are shut in the utility room and will be allowed the kitchen too if nothing out that they will cause havoc with.

Busy day here. Made mince pies then made mincemeat and apple ring. Has rested so will go in the oven later. Friend visited then out to take DD to her physio.

Had nothing to eat all day. Bought sausages for tea by accident and while I would rather have the sweet potato that is looking at me baked in the oven DH will want sausages so I was thinking I will be over at about 700. Have half prepared sliced potatoes to bake with the sausages so not sure now. Could cook all the sausages and give half to DH and I have the potato and just not worry about the sliced ones. I really fancy the sweet potato as the thought of the sausages does not appeal. Have AF pain and just want natural clean food.

Funny you talking about kale. Randomly stopped at the farm shop and have bought some Kale! Was going to stick it in the microwave. If the general consensus is I should have the Sweet Potato I will have Kale with it.

ELR · 18/12/2013 17:02

toffee I'd go for the sweet potato with a big dollop of sour cream/creme fraiche/natural yogurt and some Tabasco. Yum yum!
Just had a lovely cup of bouillon with chilli flakes.
Not sure what to have for tea, I've only got about 200cals left. May do a large salad and a two egg omelet or has anybody got any other more interesting ideas?

MinnieBar · 18/12/2013 17:12

Hello all, some fab stories on here. Xmas Smile I only started yesterday (but, no time like the present) and because I didn't plan it, but just kind of jumped in feet first and we had some roast potatoes that needed eating up I 'only' managed 650 cals. But for me, a comfort/emotional/habitual eater, that's unheard of and from reading the tips thread it seems that's ok to start with.

It was hard, and at 9 pm I felt ravenous but a) I thought about the tips that said 'being hungry won't kill you' b) I thought about what I could eat the next day and c) I had a mug of hot squash. Which is probably as bad as diet soft drinks, but it did the trick.

A couple of questions, if that's ok!

  • I'm giving blood tomorrow - I'm guessing it wouldn't be advisable to fast on the same day?
  • Has anyone tried those 'diet noodles'?
7 cals for 100g. I can't help but think that they either taste like crap, or are full of crap Xmas Grin
ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 18/12/2013 17:16

ELR - the potato is in the oven, baking. NSV for me that I realised it really does not mean I have to have the sausages just because DH will want them and if the sliced potatoes go to waste it does not matter.

Nothing in to go with the potato other than different cheeses or butter but tbh sweet potato is so delicious I will just have it plain I think. Have salad cream and mayo but maybe too high in calories? Need to put SP in MFP to see how many are actually in it.

MinnieBar - would say don't fast on blood giving days purely because I gave blood once after no breakfast and fainted Blush.

rubbishfamily333 · 18/12/2013 17:18

Evening all, it's good to see that the thread is still alive WinkWink

Well after my weekend of eating and drinking I was back up to 10.3 then this morning after my fast back down to 10.0.2 GrinGrinGrin I guess I still have a chance of being 9 something before Christmas Grin

Also when I went out on the weekend I wore some leggings with leather patches on them, last time I tried them on my belly looked massive so I changed into something else! This time they looked good, so I felt really good going out.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 18/12/2013 17:20

welcome in Minnie

I wouldn't eat those magic noodles, i saw them a few weeks ago on sale, and the cost was enough to put me off.
no idea what's in them, but it can't be great, can it?

one of my favourite 300 cal meals is a smoked salmon portion pan-fried in it's own fats with a massive green salad dressed with lime juice mixed with honey, if you're fasting for health benefits as well as weight lost, to me it makes more sense to eat 'pure' foods (i know there's a proper name for it) rather than processed. maximum goodness from your calories then.

Xmas2013MN8353 · 18/12/2013 17:25

That does make sense, but (one of!) my problems is that I really, really don't like salad. As in, I can't eat it because I'd gag. So I'll have to find other alternatives - the cauli rice sounds nice.

MinnieBar · 18/12/2013 17:25

Oops. Name change fail!

TalkinPeace · 18/12/2013 17:50
