Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks everyone for the kind words about my dress. I confess it's actually a tube skirt that I've pulled up into a mini boobtube dress mainly for the benefit of DH!
Got on scales this morning after a normal day and I'm 10.st 7lb so pleased with that as it's 3.5lb less than Monday morning!
I'm fasting today as going here with dd after school tomorrow

WOW! ELR - lucky husband! You look amazing!!

(wolf whistles spraying mince pie crumbs everywhere)

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 18/12/2013 10:22

NFD here too - FD will be tomorrow.

I really did stuff my face last night - crisps (DH had bought some, damn him!) and a few advent sweets. How do you avoid the binge thing the day after the fast? Or is this just part of letting go of the diet mentality ('I must eat it all NOW!')?

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 18/12/2013 10:24

ELR love the dress! And also love the look of that tea - take me, take me! :o

BsshBossh · 18/12/2013 10:38

sweetie you're not taking over the thread - we all do our fair share of that Wink. All we're saying is take it easy, keep it simple, go back to the basics of 5:2 or just return to 5:2 when your baby is older.
ELR you look fantabulous! And that Afternoon Tea looks wonderful - I'll have to bear it in mind for when DD is a bit older... How civilised!
somewhere maintenance sounds like a good idea under the circumstances.
niggle much of the evidence of the negative effects of fasting on women come from ADF - fasting every other day - not 5:2.
Biscuits loving your different TDEEs; very sensible.
MrsF we are all pissed off with you Angry.

Right, back to me Grin. Mince pies are my downfall. That's all I have to say Blush.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 18/12/2013 11:45

On 13th September I went to see the nurse about gynae probs, and she weighed me.

I was in denial about how much i really weighed, although i knew it was too much

i was 13st 13lbs - i was only 13st 6lbs the week before i had 9lbs DD, 6years previously Shock

Around the same time, SPB started a thread challenging MNers to lose 2stone by christmas, and since I'd already been lurking on these threads, and read up on 5:2, i was then shocked into giving it a go

I'd also admitted to myself at the start of the summer holidays that i was rapidly losing fitness. I won't blame DD, but her SN makes it difficult to be physically active, she has ASD and some times cannot cope with activities out of the home. I used that part of her disability as an excuse for me sitting on my arse, or baking and eating cake.

So i decided to dust off the 30 day Shred and did that for 40 days. I have no idea if i lost weight then, because i was still shovelling cake and crisps in eating far too much food and didn't weigh myself at all.

I was talking about our sedentary lifestyle with DH, and he started the c25k programme at the same time i re-started the Shred. Then I thought if he can do it (older than me) then so can I.

To cut a long and boring story short, I have lost weight by fasting 5:2, with a couple of LOF thrown in if i felt a plateau coming, I exercise 3/4 times a week by either doing a L2 shred session or run 5k and i feel amazing!

Still having gynae probs, and will probably need hysterectomy in new year, but losing weight will help me recover faster, and help me in the long term too.

I totally love the health benefits of LOF, and since my younger sister has developed diabetes aged 41, my dad had a triple heart by-pass aged 63, i needed to do something to help me NOT contract these life-limiting conditions. The way I was going, I was a sitting target (quite literally sitting), and hope now I'm on the road to a healthier middle age

Bliley, that was long Blush

can you tell i'm proud of myself?

Xmas Wink Xmas Grin

EarSlaps · 18/12/2013 11:49

Well done Bennett- I hope we're going to see your full story on the inspirations thread soon then.

Southeast- loved your story too. It's amazing what a difference this WOL makes to your relationship with food. I think just knowing that nothing is forbidden makes you more likely to take the healthy option. Frenzies are carefully planned events rather than guilty secrets (well, mostly but we all have our days Grin).

Just saw a friend at our school carol service who's been doing 5:2, she looks great and is doing really well on it.

I'm now going to do another Jillian workout- just two more then I'll have completed Six Week Six Pack. Then I'm going to try kale chips- I have kale, I have oil, I have seasonings I have spare pants on standby.

EarSlaps · 18/12/2013 11:52

Ooh, xposts Bennett- going to have a read before I start my workout.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 18/12/2013 11:55

i'm aiming for the next 21 lbs, but since i've got a head start, only 20lbs to go!

i'll still be 'overweight' but i have large frame (wrists measurements/feet etc) and that is what i'll be happy at, clothes size 10/12 i reckon

when i've done that, i'll post on the 'inspirations' thread Xmas Wink

BsshBossh · 18/12/2013 11:56

Bennet that's such an inspiring post, please go post on the Inspirations thread so your story doesn't get lost.

BsshBossh · 18/12/2013 11:56

Whoops X-posted with you Bennet.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 18/12/2013 11:57

really, bssh i haven't finished yet, i'm still fat Xmas Grin

DinoSnores · 18/12/2013 12:04

bennet, well done! That's amazing!

EarSlaps · 18/12/2013 12:49

Bennet- you are not 'fat'! You are over half way to goal- concentrate on how far you have come, not how far you have to go. There may be struggles, plateaus, fast days that turn into feast days and stubborn bits of fat that just won't go, but in the long run you will get there. You are now eating right and have the tools to be healthy for life. Think of how much fitter, stronger and better you feel now than before and focus on that, rather than feeling 'fat'.

What you have done so far is inspirational- you made the choice to turn your life around and you are doing brilliantly.

This goes for all the rest of you too Smile.

MrsFlorrick · 18/12/2013 12:58

Hello everyone.

Bennett. Well done!! Congrats. What an achievement!!!

Turkey. Thanks Thanks. Grin I stuck to my FD yesterday and didn't go down for treats after my encounter with drunken arse.
He was oblivious this am. Grr.

Had a total mare this morning. DD and DS were due to sing carols at the church with school. DD vomits all over kitchen so clearly I can't take her. Disney Dad is long gone. A
And I have all the presents for the various teachers and TA from EVERYONE!! Aaaaaahhhh.

So cleaned DD off stuck DC in car drove to school like a maniac. Left vomity DC in car watching my phone and iPad. Whilst I legged it in and present-bombed various teachers and threw cards at DCs little friends (and their parents) and legged it back to car and drove like a maniac to get home before more vomiting occurred.

Argh. I then had to text as many parents as I could to let them know that I hadn't made off with the Xmas collections and had already dropped it all off!! Ffs.

So today is a nFD and I've only just had something. Sounds virtuous? Eh no. I had a whole tray full of Waitrose crispy cheese bites from their party food selection. And yes it was worth half my TDEE to eat those Wink

MrsFlorrick · 18/12/2013 13:02

Somewhere. In glad I am not alone in hating pissed male rambling!!

You have made me feel more reasonable.

Bssh. Thanks Thanks for helping me be pissed off. Obv this has now turned into being cheesed off after Waitrose party food frenzy....

Dino. A&C are excellent. No complaints. I find their veg better than Waitrose organic. I dont buy their meat. It's more expensive than most organic meats out there. However I hear quality is exceptional. Have you tried their meat?

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 18/12/2013 13:25

Bennet That is a true inspirational story. Its making me even more determined I can do this in the new year. In fact Im going to aim to lose a stone by June which should also be a dress size making me a size 12 just in time for my holidays will probably come back a 14, but hey ho

South I read your story on the inspirational thread too. I really connected with the part where you said it took you so long to start because you thought you were ok just being 'only' chubby which is what I am now. I have a BMI of 25.6 so just in the overweight category (in fact if I was an inch taller Id be in the healthy range for my weight) and Ive been putting off losing weight, after all there are much bigger people than me about. However I realise that I really need to lose a stone or so to really put me in the healthy area. Just wish DH would think the same. He is currently complaining that he has just eaten too much. He actually said he felt a bit sick. Though I know he will eat just as much another time. Ive just chatted with him and he just doesn't care. His words "I just dont see the point of not enjoying my food" He doesn't believe me when I say that with this WOE you can enjoy your food.

Sorry went off on a tangent then about DH's weight. I wish he'd want to lose weight too. It would be so much easier, especially as he cooks and some of our evening meals aren't exactly the healthiest. Nothing I can say will change his mind though. I dont want anyone to tell me what to say to him because he doesn't want to do anything about it. He is an adult so it needs to be down to him. Just wish he thought the same.

And yet again I get carried away and waffle on. Sorry.

Still sticking to 16:8 today and on course for 1500 cals today providing I stay away from the biscuit tin

MrsFlorrick · 18/12/2013 13:32

Biscuits. 16:8 at 1500 cals is great!!

Technically I was 16;8 today however I ate 900 cals worth of Waitrose cheese bites and a further 400 cals worth of bhalzen Zum Fest (German Xmas) biscuits. Plus my two coffees (small home made skim lattes) that's 1500 cals right there and all consumed in the last 45 mins Shock

That said its a NFD and that was a frenzy!!

If I had a sensible omelette as was my original plan, I'd be on track for the same. Hmm
