Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

So I seem to be a lower weight than what I thought I would be. I've weighed myself on the days when I could and have stayed around 10 stone 12lbs so I'm pleased with that.

Just been managing 16:8s all week and I haven't even tried. I was just too busy. I've also been to Parkrun this morning which I didn't really want to do, but so glad I did I feel so much better for it. Ill never be as fast as Mo (obviously), but I like to be under 28 mins.

Well done bssh

Now the plan is to have today off as normal for a Saturday and back to 16:8 from tomorrow with possibly a mini fast on Tuesday before it all begins properly in the new year. I want to be 9 something by June when I go on my holiday.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 28/12/2013 11:03

Hope you fee l better soon Toffee

DinoSnores · 28/12/2013 11:58

Well done bssh and biscuits!

Get well soon, toffee.

Lovely day here so hope everyone is getting some sunshine!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 28/12/2013 12:02

Go Bssh!!!

I've also weighed in and lost over the last week. Don't know how, I went a bit more nuts on all fronts than I thought I would (but definitely far better than I would have before). Oh well, could someone just pass the leftover xmas pudding. Many thanks!

melanie I'd avoid the Davina hoop for now. Even the other one on the argo site may be too light to start with (although is a far better diameter).

BuggarMeGently · 28/12/2013 13:29

Hi guys! Can I join please? Over the last 20 years I've been 5 stone, 15 stone and everywhere in between. I haven't read all the threads, though?

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 28/12/2013 13:45

Well done eat

Hi and welcome Bugger

MelanieCheeks · 28/12/2013 13:52

Have bought the weighted one from Argos - it's much bigger than I expected! But it seems to be easy enough to get it going, in either direction. Just need somewhere to store it....

BuggarMeGently · 28/12/2013 13:52

I don't think I'll have trouble fasting, but I have a question...

My Expenditure thing says I should be on less than 2000 cals a day...does that mean I should reduce my FD cals accordingly? Like 400-450? I'm a bit thick...sorry!!

MelanieCheeks · 28/12/2013 13:53

And where are my manners? Weclome aboard Buggar, and any other newbies who've joined us. You'll find us a freindly and supportive gang ;-)

MelanieCheeks · 28/12/2013 13:54

I wouldn't get too caught up in the Maths. It's all approximations anyway. Start with 500 and see how you go.

BuggarMeGently · 28/12/2013 13:56

Grin I ain't been called buggar since I was a kid!!

Breadandwine · 28/12/2013 14:32

You can get called all sorts on here! Smile

Well done, BuggarMeGently, this is the start of something big!

Oops, I didn't put that very well! Maybe what I meant was that you'll soon be a little buggar! Grin

Hi mttum glad to see you're still in the zone, as it were!

I was just over 9st last week - and I'm just over 9st this morning!

Mission accomplished!

But if I'd have piled the weight on, I have the tools to shift it as fast as it accumulates.

We all do on this WOL! Grin

Going to be super fit this coming year! I received a 3kg kettle bell for Xmas - and a weighted, studded, hula hoop! That was in response to a throwaway remark I made to my wife, several months ago - I said I wouldn't mind being able to hula hoop. So here we are! Any hints and tips gratefully received!

BigChoc do you have a recommended YouTube clip on kettle bell exercises, by any chance?

BuggarMeGently · 28/12/2013 14:47

when I get down to 13 stone I'm going to nc to this! It all seems very saunting...around the 7.5 stone mark is healthy for me...so I've got almost half my body weight to lose Blush but you lovely ladies are sooo motivating! I figure if I can lose just 5lb a month, I can be 5st lighter by this time next year. Any other shortarses here??

ChristmasPudding6 · 28/12/2013 14:57

Welcome Buggar I'm sure u will love this WOE once you get into it. Don't get too overly hung up on numbers. They are just a guidance and its more about the overall weekly deficit and change in general eating habits (no snacking, healthier choices, going without the odd meal) that makes the real difference.

Well done Eat on ur loss. How amazing is that!?

And B&W another great example of how to maintain despite eating all the lovely heavy rich food on offer at this time of year. And I'm sure you haven't found yourself missing out or deprived.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 28/12/2013 15:02

Hi all. Sheepishly checking in. Feel rotten after the festive season though might be a bug Sad More later.

BuggarMeGently · 28/12/2013 15:07

Veree tempted to bring my first fast day forward to tomorrow...have any of you ladies had quite a bit to lose like me? DH doing a cheeseboard at the mo...may have just a little of each depending on how many eaches there are.

ChubbyKitty · 28/12/2013 15:48

I'm planning to start this in the new yearSmile slightly nervous about it all.

BuggarMeGently · 28/12/2013 16:06

Me too, Chubby /ffs that's even worse than "buggar"...sorry!) but it does get easier apparantly.

BsshBossh · 28/12/2013 16:24

Well done on losses & maintaining Biscuits, Eatriskier, Breadandwine and anyone else I've missed.

Welcome Buggar & Chubby (name changes in order soon I'm sure!).

BsshBossh · 28/12/2013 16:28

Buggar I've lost nearly 6 stones in 2 years. I lost the first 3 stones doing daily calorie counting at 15 % below TDEE, then have been losing the last 3 stones on 5:2 only. You can do it! But it took me 2 years, not 1 and that included a 4 month stall.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 28/12/2013 16:40

Welcome BMG and all newbies.

Had 2 hours at PIL. Wiped out now. I had my flu jab. DH did not. Next year he will pay for one. I am bored with being will now. Soup and baguette for tea once I feel I can eat.

BuggarMeGently · 28/12/2013 16:58

Ah bssh...I may be setting my goals a little high then.

What would be classed as an NSV??

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 28/12/2013 17:14

Hello everyone, nice to see some new faces

Just popped in to report how great this WOE is, I had pizza, olives, bread, butter, chocolates and buckets a few glasses of wine and port on christmas Eve.

champagne, croissants, cauli cheese with roast potatoes and buttery vegetable, mince pies and more chocolate plus crisps on christmas day along with more wine and even a bottle of cider

On boxing day I skipped breakfast and had jacket potato with full fat coleslaw, a pudding that came in at over 1000 cals, more wine and then cheese and biscuits for supper.

Really had a great feast, beautiful food but probably 2/3 of the portion size I would have eaten this time last year.

And I maintained Xmas Grin

Still the same as last weigh in []

BetsyJingleBells · 28/12/2013 17:22

Although eatriskier did lose 5 stone in 6 months Buggarmegently! So it is possible... Grin

Hello to you and chubbykitty - don't be scared just jump in! It's easy - you just skip brekkie, have a small/carb free lunch and a small dinner, no snacks, LOADS of coffee/tea/water/whatever.

Avoid sugar, bread, pasta etc - make you want to eat more and don't fill you up much.

Soups and stews are brilliant - lots of veg and protein, just don't eat with mash!

And remember YOU CAN EAT IT TOMORROW!

Mazzledazzle · 28/12/2013 17:29

Hi folks. After a bit of lurking I'm taking the plunge and committing myself to this new WOE.

Have been yoyoing since I was 16. I'm over-weight because I have a sugar addiction and I'm an emotional eater. That said, my eating habits have improved considerably compared to the old days when I'd inhale whole packets of biscuits, cakes and chocolate

In order to have a healthy BMI (just) I need to be 11st 7lb. I've managed to lose 9lb in the last month mostly by using the Weight Watchers's app, but I've still 2 st 7lb to lose. Since the 20th Dec. I've managed 3 fast days and today I'm 16:8. I know I'd continue to lose on WW, but I'm really impressed by the health benefits of fasting. Currently I'm paying £10 per month as an online WW member. Going to bite the bullet and stop the direct debit. I'm strangely attached to the app! Might download MFP instead.
