Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Welcome turkeybaby. You sound very well-prepared and motivated! Good on ya :)

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 27/12/2013 12:12

Bssh, Betsy I'm fasting too. I ate more over the hols on NFDs, but ADF stopped any gain. So, IF brought a great improvement over last Christmas, which was one long junk gorge.
Xmas Smile
Bssh 0.4 lb is just a brief wee, so you have maintained. Well done, sounds like an NSV !
You have maintained without the need for extra FDs, so better discipline than I on NFDs.

Betsy You are right, leave Choc Frenzies to the pros - feel free to pass over your choc!
I couldn't handle your inventive cocktails, though, so you have the expert training there; I hardly ever drink even one small glass of plain wine.

It is interesting that those of you who have lost a few stone report on a shrunken stomach capacity. I suspect you have also changed your metabolism radically. That is an important health NSV.
Hmm

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 27/12/2013 12:14

Toffee You sound poorly and in need of a rest. You really shouldn't attempt any chores, or your recovery will take longer. Do take care of yourself.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 27/12/2013 12:20

Welcome turkeybaby.
You sound very determined and prepared. You are so right; fat around the tum is the unhealthiest sort, but it should soon reduce on 5:2.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 27/12/2013 12:48

Anyone else struggling a little with fasting today? nothing to do with diving into the chocolates last night

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/12/2013 12:59

BigChoc - you are right. I am wiped out. Just tried do a jigsaw and even that is too much for me Sad. Kids are being neglected and on computer too much. I have something in my eye I can't get out and I am seriously unimpressed I am ill. Now I can ds2 shouting and moaning about a sibling. DS1 announced earlier it feels like we haven't had Christmas as we haven't been to the in laws. Utterly pissed off with him. Lovely food all day at Christmas, loads of presents, free rein to do what they want but all rubbish as no grand parents SadAngry.

TalkinPeace · 27/12/2013 13:47

Kids are being neglected and on computer too much
PAH
In the old days they would have retreated to their rooms with whatever book they had been given, or lego kit or toy soldiers or craft kit involving glue that does not come out of carpets

I was thinking back to when I was a kid and I interacted MUCH less with my parents than my kids do with me - laptops are great - each can do their own thing but in the same room ....

Have blitzed the house today, was going to fast but then saw the home made sausage rolls.
Time to brave the shops. Only Waitrose admittedly. Wish me luck !

PS - am not going near the Gym till after New Year and I do not own a set of scales but I know that my muffin top has inflated. Oh well. It'll go Xmas Grin

BetsyJingleBells · 27/12/2013 14:42

None left bigchoc Grin

I've been checking out my old food diary spreadsheets and I reckon I eat somewhere around 30-50% less these days than I used to. I have also made myself hungry - nothing like a big list of tasty foods to make the stomach growl on a fast day!

Interesting point about changing our metabolism through weight loss - might have to investigate if there's any journal articles on the subject…

Ditto here about family interaction tip & toffee - we're all on different devices but we are in the same room and occasionally even talking to each other! (Although I have retreated upstairs to read quietly but seem to have accidentally brought my laptop with me - oops).

The kids are absolutely loving the extended games/computer time - punctuated by an occasional family meal or board game. The horrible weather is a great excuse for us to veg out and enjoy our free time. We all need a rest.

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 14:45

eatriskier oh yes, fasting is very hard today. We still have guests and the kitchen table is laden still with goodies. Even the festive biscuits are open to all - not even its cover is on Shock. To top it off DH is planning a calorie laden goose pie tonight and the Christmas cake he laboured over needs eating. So tonight I will not be counting calories. I've just returned from a 2 hour brisk route (on my own) and am now having a black coffee. I will try and hold out until at least 5 pm and make today a Fast 5 day.

Come on fasters, we can do it!

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 14:48

*brisk walk

Not2bObvious · 27/12/2013 14:50

Managed a run, oh ok then a walk interspersed with the occasional jog this morning. Fasted til 11ambut then felt nearly unwell with hunger so had a little cheese/crackers. About to tuck into salted cod dish now, it's going to be a tdee day me thinks. Feel like a heifer though, looking forward to getting back to routine next week, too hard while away. Making the best choices I can while still enjoying it, no point treating this like a diet and ignoring the lovely food on offer but don't need the snacks/chocs/crisps for the next few days. Happy Friday all

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 27/12/2013 15:43

Betsy Biology is not my field, but I've tried to condense several papers I've read:

Fat and Metabolism

The scientific consensus since about 1995 is that body fat is highly active tissue which secretes hormones (e.g. leptin, adiponectin) and microphages (which cause inflammation) directly into the bloodstream. These substances can significantly affect metabolism & weight and increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some cancers.
E.g ref and ref

Visceral fat is more dangerous than subcutaneous - a study found that liposuction removing up to 20lb of the latter did not improve health indicators. Visceral fat needs to be reduced by exercise and a calorie deficit, preferably both together.

OK, maybe more than you wanted to know. I'm off to the gym now, to hopefully reduce some visceral fat !
Xmas Smile

mollysfolly · 27/12/2013 16:42

Brilliant! The best entry on this thread in 16 months!

Emmabryant123 · 27/12/2013 17:05

Well I didn't fast but havnt over eaten either.
I had two slices cheese on toast at 10am. (Been wanting cheese all Xmas but havnt made room for it)
Dinner just now cold gammon, fried left over mash and fried eggs.
Full up.
Craving something sweet but having a coffee instead, may have a dr pepper zero later.

BetsyJingleBells · 27/12/2013 17:36

Thanks for that bigchoc - enjoy the gym - I shall be reading about adipokines!

Fasting has been ok today - I'm not sure what the total cals will be as I'm heating up leftovers for dinner, and may have had a small piece of (homemade, no icing, packed with fruit) cake. So a mini fast at best, but no chocolate and will avoid booze, and all the goddamn salty snacks my DH just went out and bought to go with the, also just purchased, interesting beer selection.

Evening.

Sounds like you've all had an indulgent festive Christmas.

Despite scoffing for Britain (and several Smaller EU nations) my weight has remained stubbornly between 158lbs and 160lbs. Grin

Something to be said for my 10 week stall. I've not gained despite everything.

Back to JM Ripped in 30 workouts once my cold finally decided to depart (well over due!)

Earslaps Envy of your JM box set!

Bigchoc. You're a kindle frenzier!!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/12/2013 17:45

I hate being ill Sad.

The reason I am miffed about my kids being computer addicts is when you do tell them they can't go on them they kick off at times. DS1 and DD have their own lap tops so go on when they want and DS2 moans it isn't fair as he has to ask to go on the computer. I know it is their holiday too but I have said no more screens after tea. DD and DS2 have trouble sleeping as it is and I am not sure late on a screen helps. I am also conscious of not doing enough with them so they just go back to the easy option.

Hope to make it to PIL tomorrow though won't stay long as everything tires me out.

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 17:57

Toffee is the no screens after tea a consistent or an ad hoc rule?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/12/2013 18:05

Just done it for the last couple of days or so as they have been on them more with it being holidays and DH and I not well.

mttum · 27/12/2013 18:14

Hi everyone, just checking in to say a belated merry Christmas and happy new year to all. Haven't been on the thread for a couple of months, been rather a turbulent time emotionally. Tbh quite glad Christmas is over so I can drop the "jolly" mask and start to look forward to the future.

On the bright side, weight has been fairly stable at around 13 st. (For those of you who don't know me, I'm a 6 ft tall man, so that's pretty good for me.)

All the best to all of you, and in look forward to contributing more in 2014.

ChristmasPudding6 · 27/12/2013 18:17

FD been easy enough so far. We headed off for PILs around midday so spent most of afternoon in car. Kids ate haribo but I wasn't even tempted by the smell.

Now it's been 19hours of LOF and prob not eating for a few hours yet so if I don't overdo the left over turkey and jacket potato then I should probably not be too far away from 500cals. Just need to keep away from any puddings!!!
Feel good to know I can still do it and I'm looking forward to the SV when I shift these temporary lbs.

Emmabryant123 · 27/12/2013 18:19

Oh also bought my self a food flask today.
So first fast day back at work I can have a tin of soup (116 cals) this one is.
And maybe by something for dinner that night like a low cal ready meal etc

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 18:20

mttum welcome back. May 2014 be better for you Thanks. Well done for maintaining.

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 18:21

I'm still LOFing away. 20 hrs so far. I can smell the goose pie and it smells good. Will definitely be a > 500 cal FD today :)

ChristmasPudding6 · 27/12/2013 18:22

Toffee I hope you feel better soon. We banned any TV or iPads for week and then it drifted into several. We were doing well on it and tbh didn't miss it. And kids stopped nagging after a few days. It was only when we all started getting ill that we fell into the habit again. It's fine while they are occupied by these things but I find their behaviour changes for the worst in between games/tv.

I guess it also depends on ages. Mine are 6,5 and 3.

Gosh, reading those ages back is rather worrying that they have issues like this so young! Eeeek
