Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Had a mini-fast today. LOF at home/travelling until dinner at my PILs with whom we are staying for a few days, so I'll have had more than 500 kcals but still less than I would have had otherwise. They are definitely not big eaters so I won't be overindulging while here.

lady/*wonderful - my BMI was just over 24 when I started a few weeks ago and I've lost 2.6kg since last Monday (4 fasts done now, 11 days in). I don't find the fasts difficult as long as I keep myself occupied. Unless you are on diabetes medication, your blood sugar won't go low either. It might feel similar to when someone's does, but it will still be normal. I find drinking lots of water/tea helps if I do get hungry as often it is actually thirst I am experiencing.

DinoSnores · 26/12/2013 22:47

Aargh, bodged lady/wonderful - should both be highlighted now!

Hello everyone. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. Twas a huge success here, the in-laws loved the spread I put on and DH was very grateful for the effort I went to. And I had a lovely cruisey rest day yesterday, though I have to admit I didn't really know what to do with myself after being so busy for so longHmm, which lead to some mindless eating and regret. I do hope I can sort that out over time, it is one thing I really don't like about myself, and know it is key to helping me become healthy and fit.

There were so many leftovers from Christmas, and I couldn't resist having an ice-cream sundae with three flavours of ice-cream, topping and crushed malteasers. After I ate it I thought to myself,"It wasn't all that good was it? I wish I hadn't eaten it". It is something I must work on.

I am planning a fast day today, but I will be easy on myself if I can't manage it as we are going to the beach with DH's extended family for a picnic. I have to bake a ham for it this morning, and I just don't know how I'll resist it! Actually, I will just remind myself that I can have it tomorrow. I know I will feel better for fasting, as I felt a bit uncomfortable yesterday after the big meal at Christmas, then more of the same yesterday. I will take some carrot sticks and celery sticks in case I feel the need to be nibbling something. I am feeling rather bloated and chunky, so that is incentive enough.

The fact that so many on this thread and everywhere else have had great results with their weight and health keeps me motivated to keep going.

Toffee, sorry to hear you have been ill. I hope you are on the mend.

positively9something · 26/12/2013 23:04

So I only fasted once this week but I havt madly overdone it, I'm sure I have been over tdee everyday but I havnt been greedy! I'm thinking about going to the gym tomorrow

Well done to all fasters

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 26/12/2013 23:11

Just popping on to say hi. Sorry I can't go back through thread as on my phone because im at my parents. Had my mum whining about me not eating as much as she thought I would, but im stuffed after being at MILs all day. I did tell my mum too we wouldn't be wanting food. Oh well.

Without even trying I've just had 2 days of 16:8 as I've just been far too busy in the mornings to eat anything, its been gone 2PM before I've eaten. No idea on my weight though, hopefully im still 10 something.

Anyway will catch up later, back home tomorrow with my new kindle so will be able to get on better with a larger screen. Hope everyone is having or has had a good Christmas.

ChristmasPudding6 · 26/12/2013 23:55

Been looking up Kindles. All ur talk has made me realise I miss reading and could do with a handy portable device I can use when I'm out and about waiting for kids and stuff. Which ones do u guys have? And is kindle the best e reader?

Re food. Polished off half a tub of celebrations just because I could. Tomorrow mini FD. Like Dino I'm travelling to in laws so will hold off eating til dinner. V stuffed right now. Other half of box will be eaten on NY eve!

Welcome newbies. Get stuck into this thread. Great for support and keeping u on track. I was BMI 24 when I began. Now I'm nearly 21. Yippee! (I'm talking BMI, u don't actually get any younger on this plan though there are some more mature ones around who might claim differently!). Good luck and well done for starting already.

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 07:16

Morning all. My official Friday weigh-in today and have only managed one fast this Christmas week and.... I've only put on 0.4 lbs!!!

Will fast today but may eat a normal meal tonight as some of our houseguests might be staying on an extra day.

Right, will catch up on thread now.

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 07:37

BigChoc, Betsy you fasting today then?

TIP I'd say that is a "cheesy" NSV Grin.

ladybranston good luck on your trip and your snacks sound yummy.

whatawonderfulworld welcome. The fasts definitely get easier over time. I used to get a bit irritable/short-tempered during my early fasts but that's rarely the case these days.

Welcome claretandamberforever.

ChristmasPudding6 I've had three Kindles - the keyboard one, the touch, and for Christmas this week I got a Paperwhite. The latter is my favourite because I can read in the dark without disturbing DH if I wake at night. The brighter pages also feel more book-like cf to the dull grey of the touch.

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 27/12/2013 07:58

Morning all! Haven't had much luck with internet whilst away since Christmas Eve, but leaving for home today, so will be back on the straight and narrow with a lot more mindfulness and a lot less booze...

Congrats to all for svs and nsvs and commiserations to those who are poorly and put upon

Welcome wonderful, claret and ladybranston - I love this WOE but don't post as often as others, I can't keep up!

Now to pack up and tart the long trek north!

BetsyJingleBells · 27/12/2013 08:12

Yup, fasting today bssh. I'm already at the point where I've forgotten about mindful eating/drinking and am not enjoying what's going in - my stomach is too small to fit it all in! Felt very ill last night and was close to vomming it all up.

So feeling a bit better this morning but definitely need a day off. I really need some kind of exercise - have barely moved for 3 days (as predicted!)

A fast day will put me back in control and help see off the calorific damage.

I shouldn't do choc frenzies - next time I'll leave that to the experts!

I have been good with the cheese though - just a little here and there, enough to enjoy but not over doing it. A small victory perhaps Wink

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 08:34

This was my first Christmas ever when I didn't stuff myself. I skipped breakfast every day and ate normal portions. I don't think I felt bloated or stuffed once. I was definitely eating mindfully. I think I've turned a very sharp corner in my eating habits and I'm entering 2014 a very chuffed, very proud woman.

claretandamberforever · 27/12/2013 08:44

Whoops, sorry I didn't introduce myself, how rude Grin

Well I am 38 and I've been on an "on-a-diet-off-a-diet" diet since I was 22. I am now almost five stone heavier since I started that diet.

In those 16 years I have tried calorie counting, weight watchers, slimming world and several total meal replacement diets. The TMR diets work brilliantly and I can stick to them but the weight just piles straight back on plus more afterwards.

I have no idea what normal eating means. I love food and eating has just become a hobby. I eat all the time even when I am not hungry. I stick to diets for a few weeks until I get bored then go off on an eating frenzy. I just seem to have no sticking power for diets. I can't bear the thought of having to go back to classes, they are just so boring and long. I also get upset easily if I have had a 'good' week yet gained/maintained because there are always women there who've lost and come out with the "I don't deserve that, I was out drinking all Saturday day and finished off the night with a curry" etc etc... I can't do that.

So that's why 5:2 suits me, as even I can manage to be strict for two days a week. I just need to stick at the plan for longer than a few weeks and look up on it as a new lifestyle choice.

BetsyJingleBells · 27/12/2013 08:46

I was close bssh - the crap chocolate (not bought by me but gifts from work) was what dunnit! Up until then I've been doing one big lovely meal a day, a modest cheese plate later, perhaps a bit of nice cake, and feeling brilliant on it.

There was no need for adding half a chocolate orange into the mix. There were good chocolates too but they got wasted in a frenzy after I was hopped up on cheap choc sugar.

I expect the lashings of wine may have played a part too of course...

On dear. Stepped on scales today to see myself 6lb up on last week!!! FD for me today!!!

Thanks for recommendation on kindle Bssh I think that was the one I was secretly planning on.

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 09:26

claretandamber if you manage to stick to 5:2 then, over time, you'll find your appetite has naturally re-set itself: you'll learn what true physical hunger feels like as opposed to mental/emotional hunger; you'll be better able to recognise your full/satisfied switch; your stomach will physically shrink so you'll not actually be able to eat as much as you want to without feeling bloated/sick.

I've lost nearly 6 stones in 2 year: the first 3 stones on calorie counting (where I learned what normal portion sizes actually were); the next 3 stones this year on 5:2. 5:2 has certainly been the best method for losing weight, and the health benefits keep me motivated.

Stick with us, keep checking in here and you'll do fine!

ChristmasPudding6 · 27/12/2013 09:32

Oops double post!?!? I think the excess pounds have dulled my senses.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 27/12/2013 10:15

I've chosen the kindle fire hd as its also a tablet so can access the internet via WiFi. Not downloaded any books yet and never used an ereader before so not sure if its the best for reading yet, but will find out later.

Still sticking to 16:8 today.

Now for my drive home up the A1.

BetsyJingleBells · 27/12/2013 10:17

Hi Claret - you seem to have a very close relationship with your scales… now this WOE can be as disappointing as other diets in terms of scale readings not appearing to reflect your eating activities that week so can I recommend taking some measurements (waist, hips, bust, neck, thighs, arms etc) as there will often be a physical change in shape but no change in weight.

bssh I meant to say congratulations on your achievement of mindful eating over xmas, very impressive Smile

postmanpatsreindeer · 27/12/2013 10:18

Morning all

pudding you have the tools to shift that so no worries Smile

I am now suffering from Kindle envy...I have the keyboard one from about three years ago and really can't justify a replacement Sad

Welcome claret and good luck with 5:2, plenty of support here and no judgement or crowing!

BetsyJingleBells · 27/12/2013 10:22

I still read books Shock I'm not even a luddite but I love actual books Grin. However, my new years resolution is to spend less time staring at screens and more time with nose in a book. My reading levels have been shocking during term time (tiredness-related) and I have a huge pile of new books to plough through Grin Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/12/2013 11:06

Tip - I had some stilton last night, was very nice.

Well done Bssh. NSV.

Wanted to fast today but not allowed as still poorly. Still haven't made it to PIL. BIL hasn't made it down either due to the weather. DCs disappointed but we can't risk giving it to PIL who are obviously much older than us.

I am exhausted. Even doing one housework job wipes me out.

Loaded in todays weight onto HappyScale and it says I have gained. I am a bit disappointed but not too surprised. Not sure how HS works tbh to give the average for the week but maybe it will all become clear after a week.

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 11:50

I still read normal books - this Christmas I was given hardbacks of both Donna Tartt and Jhumpa Lahiri's new novels (The Goldfinch is all consuming and wonderful, by the way). Both DH and I collect first edition hardbacks of our favourite contemporary writers. But I love Kindles for their portability and the Paperwhite is very good for middle of the night reading. I've got an iPad with Kindle app on but reading too long on it strains my eyes; no such strain with the normal e-reader.

BsshBossh · 27/12/2013 11:55

Hope you feel better soon Toffee. I don't have illness as an excuse but am already contemplating giving up on my FD today (still so much yummy Christmas goodness in the house, including some very delicious Neal's Yard cheeses which would be criminal to go to waste). Maybe try not to eat until 4pm to get in an 18 hour fast then eat normally but moderately thereafter...

turkeybaby · 27/12/2013 11:55

today is my first fast day - been well planned ahead and i've been watching these threads for ages in preparation. feeling very motivated. there is only one way this is going.. :)

I'm 11st6lbs, 5'5" and i'd like to get down to 10st. i put on all my fat around my middle and i was asked if i was preggers the other day! time to lose some weight!

have come on here for inspiration. i'm have only had herbal tea and water so far today. i plan to have veg soup for lunch then rice and veg for dinner.
