Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Afternoon and merry christmas everyone

I'm very much looking forwards to LOFD tomorrow

To think I used to eat like I have done for the past few days ALL THE TIME!

I think I've cracked the mind-set now, the food was good, but far too much

TalkinPeace · 26/12/2013 16:06

Hi there Ladybranston and welcome. I was born in NYC.
I've only been to the Berkshires in the summer, bet its beatiful at this time of year.
NO Snacking.
Look out the window and see what you can see.
Spot trees and birds and deer and cheesy lights and bad driving ... the time will fly

BennetGirl
Isn't it funny - the "full" feeling is no longer nice!
Its nice to enjoy a meal, but its also nice to feel empty and ready for one in between.

Emmabryant123 · 26/12/2013 16:34

Definite mini fast tomorrow for me.
Tomorrows dinner is left over gammon, chips and fried egg, nicely under 1000 cal hopefully and the only thing I'm eating tomorrow.
Today we had:
One slice toast peanut butter and jam
Half a banana
Choc and biscuit with coffee
Pigs in blanket and mini sausage rolls
Beef, gammon, mash, veg, Yorkies.
Having Xmas pud and custard in a bit but don't plan anything for after that.
Have had a bit of booze to.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 26/12/2013 17:27

I am a very lucky lady and my in laws gave all really treated me with clothes vouchers this year. Hit up the sales this morning. So whoever it was on a previous thread who said about buying jeans slightly too tight as they stretch had better be right or I'm coming after them Grin

Hope everyone has had a great time. More partying tonight. Then fasting tomorrow. And more partying Saturday. Then return to normal. I like normal

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 26/12/2013 17:37

TiP most definitely, the looking forward to a meal is more of the pleasure of eating now, no longer eating through habit linked to the time of day

BsshBossh · 26/12/2013 18:11

Welcome lady.

Well it's been a wonderful Christmas. FD tomorrow I hope. We'll see...

BsshBossh · 26/12/2013 18:11

Any other fasters tomorrow?

whatawonderfulworld · 26/12/2013 18:19

Hello, may I join you all please? I'm hoping to start 5:2 for New Years (once hols over and guests leave Dec. 31).

I don't have a huge amount to lose but enough that my clothes don't fit properly anymore and I haven't the budget or desire to buy a new wardrobe! I am the heaviest I've ever been and I'm not able to drop 10lbs or so like I used to be able to with little effort. It seems stuck to me, despite my attempt at calorie counting. Christmas has not been helpful.

I think 5:2 would suit me, I hope so anyway. Bit nervous about mood swings though as I know I can get rather unpleasant when blood sugar is low. Have young DC, not great sleep, and need my energy as well! Off to read tips thread to see if either of those happen to be common concerns.

Is the first fast really hard?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/12/2013 18:32

Welcome lady and whatawonderfulworld. You will get loads of support from ideas from everyone on this thread.

I planned to fast tomorrow but may male it to PIL if DH and I are better. Kids desperate to see them and BIL and partner are hoping to come too. Just have to see.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/12/2013 18:33

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 26/12/2013 18:53

Amazingly, I cooked today, without redecorating / exploding my kitchen:
baked green thai salmon (prepared by the deli, naturally) with chips and 3 baked red peppers.
This was followed by deviant porridge, rice pud, 85% Lindt, a huge bag of MWed popcorna and a shake.
Also, yummy kale crackers, with dips. I hope my tum tolerates more kale than MrsF's, because they were too delic to enjoy in moderation.

Bssh My tum needs a break, so I'm FDing too tomorrow - zero cals until 6pm, making 22 hrs with fasted training, after which I may eat in my favourite restaurant if I'm not too lazy I bike into town through the rain.
Anyone else FDing ?

Also, has anyone had any seasonal postcard snow yet or just this grot ?

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 26/12/2013 18:55

Welcome to our WOL, Lady and Wonderful. You'll find lots of support here.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 26/12/2013 18:58

Toffee Best not to fast if you're germy. Just have as much nourishing soup and stew as your bod requests.

Not2bObvious · 26/12/2013 19:08

Been lurking myself over the last few days, away from home and internet access sketchy at best. Feeling very puffy/bloated at the minute and badly in need of a light day after the last few days. I'm allowing myself today to be piggy this evening, Indian on the way Xmas Grin but off for a run weather permitting in the morning. Fasting isn't going to be possible but a cut back on the choc/crisps/white bread/wine and a serious increase in water intake will be the plan.
Welcome newcomers, you won't regret starting this WOL, it works so well.

ladybranston · 26/12/2013 19:20

Just got back from Whole Foods - provisions for long bus ride include a quinoa salad (160) and a delicious looking small organic pink lady apple (89), small tub of marinated butter beans (150) and a small organic apple sauce (60). Is is me or does it look like a massive heap of food :)??

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/12/2013 19:25

I can't face food. Fridge stuffed with lovely cheeses as DH bought me TWO cheese and chutney hampers and I don't feel hungry Sad. Throat is sore. I am tired. At least DH is off work for a few days.

ladybranston · 26/12/2013 19:36

thank you obvs :) i am excited about this. Was a previously very in-shape person (still not really overweight now) until i tore my ACL this summer. Had to put all my weightlifting and spinning on hold, and am feeling the loss of my muscles/trimness. hopefully this WOL will help me stay slim until i get clearance to return to the gym...

EarSlaps · 26/12/2013 20:25

Welcome lady and wonderful.

Wonderful- I have a 4yo with a faulty wake up function (5.30-7.30 is usual), and a 19mo who wakes up repeatedly through the night and was bf when I started this. I haven't found it too hard, and adding in exercise too has given me so much more energy. I don't get much more grumpy on FDs, children's dinner time can be hard so if i'm struggling I either eat my dinner with them or prepare myself a small plate of lo cal veg I can sit and eat with them.

Yes, I found the first fast hard. The day itself was ok but I couldn't sleep well that night and woke up feeling pretty terrible. But fine since then. I think your body just needs to learn to burn fat. I was the ultimate low blood sugar grump before this too, but I never seem to get that feeling anymore.

TalkinPeace · 26/12/2013 20:36

whatawonderfulworld
Bit nervous about mood swings though as I know I can get rather unpleasant when blood sugar is low.
Ah but its much simpler than that.
When you get into the habit of eating when you need to and using your reserves, your blood sugar never shoots up so it cannot crash ....

What those of us who are used to fasting have found is that your body learns to regulate the whole sugar / insulin system much, much better
so coping with general tiredness becomes less extreme.

Toffee
For the first Christmas EVER I am struggling to get through my Christmas cheese collection.
I have never, ever had the "full swich" kick in with cheese before.
Its rather odd.
But probably good for me Xmas Grin

postmanpatsreindeer · 26/12/2013 20:57

Welcome lady and wonderful you've come to the right place! I had a BMI of 24 when I started this so you don't need to have loads of weight to lose to succeed (it's about 19.5 now and I've been maintaining easily for six months).

toffee hope you're soon feeling better.

I just had xmas dinner no. 2 (so that's the leftovers used up now!)

claretandamberforever · 26/12/2013 21:03

joining.

Fattest I have ever been in my whole life right now!

managed a fast day today. Next one Monday.

TalkinPeace · 26/12/2013 21:07

Welcome Claret
tell us a bit about yourself and welcome to the Thursday / Monday crew Xmas Smile

BetsyJingleBells · 26/12/2013 22:25

Right. I'm joining the tasters tomorrow. Feel horribly uncomfortably full and can't handle it at all. Body is in turmoil - need a day off!

Putting this here as a reminder for when I've forgotten how awful this is tomorrow - I have a very short term memory when it comes to food Grin

BetsyJingleBells · 26/12/2013 22:28

No tasting tomorrow please Wink
