Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

-You do all the work and the fat bloke with the suit gets all the credit.

To all those who worked hard to make a wonderful Christmas:
Time to chill and put your feet up.

Woohoo I got a Kindle Paperwhite. I will hibernate with it (kindred spirit BigChoc) in my bedroom when it gets too noisy for me in the house.

TalkinPeace · 25/12/2013 17:29

Question?
What did we do on Chirstmas day before broadband wifi

a) retreat to our beds with books we had been given
b) retreat to the few open pubs wearing clothes we had been given
c) play board games with the family and defer the arguments
d) drink to oblivion and snore it off while the kids play lego upstairs

so actually, screen time is for the good

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 25/12/2013 17:56

Sad Bought DS2 a photo jigsaw making kit, he was really pleased and straight away chose a photo. Except I had bought a refill kit and we don't actually have the machine we need Sad.

Looked on ebay and waiting to hear if what is being sold is what we need or what we already have.

What an idiot.

TalkinPeace · 25/12/2013 18:06

not an idiot
just not creating instant gratification

we gave each of our teens £100 in cash elaborately wrapped in many boxes and layers of paper
they now have to decide how to spend it
which is fascinating to watsch ....

postmanpatsreindeer · 25/12/2013 18:48

merry Christmas all!

Hope you've all had lovely gifts, hardworking families so you've shared the workload, and definitely a day off fasting! I went without breakfast and lunch and didn't have a massive dinner but I kept my energy levels up with a few biscuits and Quality Street Xmas Grin

bigchoc another one here suffering from gym withdrawal symptoms! Ours is closed tomorrow too so if it stays dry I will go out for a run.

EarSlaps · 25/12/2013 18:55

Ooh, ate so much I feel rather bloated but it was worth it! Roast pork was fantastic, goose fat roasties, red cabbage, stuffing etc. plus all the booze. Oh well, if I gain it will come off again after a couple of fasts I hope!

Got a new Jillian Michaels box set so looking forward to some new workouts. Hiding in a dark bedroom at the moment while boys play with granny and grandad. Must be time for some more booze soon Smile.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 25/12/2013 20:50

Postman Galeforce winds & rain here, with uprooted trees. "Daylight" is very murky. I hope you have more sensible running weather.

I cancelled my walks and my trip to the big city, to avoid an uprooted / battered BigChoc. The only decent restaurant nearby closes on public hols , so tomorrow I'll attempt cooking and prepare to scrape off the ceiling again.
Hmm
I've Kindled madly and done lovely online shops, but just as well the gym reopens tomorrow, or I'd be rattling my cage.
I need to hammer a punchbag; too much peace and goodwill around and WTF do they have to close everything down !
Xmas Smile

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 25/12/2013 21:05

Wayhay Bssh That present will change your life and enhance your me-time. However, you'll need to keep wiping off the choc fingermarks. I can deduce the last week's menu from mine.
Xmas Smile
Toffee You produced masses of delicious food and lots of presents for everyone, while also coping with poorly folk. It's absolutely normal on Christmas day to be madly hunting batteries, control consoles and all the other items one hadn't realised these blasted gadgets need.

ChristmasPudding6 · 25/12/2013 21:25

I hope everyone had a good Christmas in the end despite the power cut, storm damaged houses, poorly relatives, annoying relatives and ungrateful kids of all ages.

Thankfully we ended up having a rather chilled out stress free day with only a brief stroppy kids moment.

Yay they are all in bed now. They slept downstairs last night and were up at 5.15am!!!! The first thing I heard was "I can't believe we didn't hear that!" My husband had put the fireplace grill in the floor which if pushed down by Santa would have made an almighty bang and they were sleeping right next to it, camera at the ready had they been awake still. So sweet how they are young enough to believe in it all.

Lunch was delicious. Turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets, bread sauce, Brussels, carrots, parsnips, peas. Ate well but did stop when felt full. Nobody ate dessert until after our afternoon walk. Then back home and we started on Heston's stollen which as so more ish we nearly polished the whole lot off between two.

Now eating GU pud watching criminal minds.

Forgot about kindles. I will be putting an order in for my birthday I think. I'm sure by then there will be another super duper improved version of sorts. They update all these gadgets so quickly I can't even hope to keep up! Miss books. Not done as much reading recently as I should.

And thanks BigChoc for the laughs today in your posts!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 25/12/2013 21:31

I have just been watching the cat roll around in cat nip and play with some Christmas paper.

Kids in bed.

Going to watch 24 with DH now while eating Pringles.

FD on Friday.

ELR · 26/12/2013 09:25

Morning all, hope everyone had a fab day yesterday. I'm still feeling full from yesterday's dinner. We are having a big Boxing Day bubble and squeak breakfast, well brunch really at 11.30 with all the left over veg. Db has just tried to get me to make it for 10 o'clock as they have friends arriving around 10.30 but I've put my foot down as there is no way I could eat it anytime soon and as I'm making it for 13 of us I don't feel to guilty I have just said their friends will have to eat with us!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/12/2013 10:15

Keep your distance. I have germs Sad. DH not much better, me much worse, DS1 seems okay. Had to cancel going to PIL again though might say come to us for an hour if they keep their distance as don't want them to be ill but kids really want to see them. I think we should wait really until we are better.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 26/12/2013 11:08

Toffee Just rest and get well again.

Emmabryant123 · 26/12/2013 11:09

Morning all.
Hope everyone had a fab Xmas.I rather over indulged yesterday and over night have put on two pounds :O obviously not fat but its still shocking to see it.
Menu yesterday was:
9:00am: two cups tea
10:30am:
Breakfast- porridge made with semi skimmed milk, topped with chopped banana, raisins, almonds, Brazil nuts and peanuts. One cup home made coffee.
11:30-12:00- mini frozen sausage rolls about six with a beer
Several more drinks (glass of wine, another glass of wine, Buck's Fizz)
2:30: one milk tray choc.
4:00pm: roast beef, goose fat roast pots, roast parsnips, pigs in blanket, Yorkers, carrots, sprouts and broccoli and gravy. Glass of champers
5:00pm: two mince pies and custard
7-10pm: several choccies about five celebrations, a couple biscuits, about 10 Ferraro rochers, handful Pringles n dip, several cadburies milk tray and a couple choc liquers. Three more glasses of wine.

Today so far:
One slice peanut butter and jam on toast. Tea
Half of daughters banana.
One biscuit and one choc with coffee :O
Roast beef, gammon nd trimmings later, don't plan on eating anything until it and don't plan a dessert today so should be tdee hopefully.
Tomorrow fasting until dinner which is meat, mash n pickles but not counting calories just one meal.

In a way can't wait till jan 2nd to so a lof till 6:30pm then 500 cal dinner. Probably gonna get my self a ready meal or carton of soup for that day.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 26/12/2013 11:11

ELR You have the perfect Boxing Day brunch, very healthy, yummy and gives the tum a rest. Lucky friends !

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 26/12/2013 11:21

Emma Sounds like gastronomic delight !

Don't worry, 2lb overnight is nothing. After a Choc Frenzy I can "gain" 5 lb in a day, but I have learnt to follow with a zero-cal FD, which "loses" almost all of it. The remainder goes if the following NFD is sub-TDEE.

So, I'm sure all 5:2ers will be back on track by mid-Jan. Enjoy the hols !
Xmas Smile

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 26/12/2013 11:58

I am a terrible patient. It makes me cross as I am not good at sitting still and don't like the waste of time when ill. DH has said he will do all the feeding of kids today. They will be happy as he's doing them fish fingers and chips. Hopefully they will get fruit too but I am not stressing about it. All the kids are thin and eat loads of veg and fruit. Should have bought 2 boxes of Lemsip the other day.

ladybranston · 26/12/2013 14:04

hello everyone, I'm a lurker who would love to join in if I may? I just started the 5:2 at the beginning of the week, so today is only my second fast day. I am English (grew up in Sussex) although I live in NYC, so no boxing day temptation here. I am heading out to the Berkshires on a loooonnng bus ride this afternoon and hoping that I can survive. Usually a bus ride requires a lot of snacks to avoid boredom and car sickness. Any tips much appreciated!
