Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Breadandwine · 24/12/2013 15:37

Have the grandchildren (3 of) staying, so spent the morning teaching 8-yr-old GS how to play chess (and beating my son) in between making my EVOO brioche for my haggis en croute and supervising 8-yr-old and a friend making some bread rolls.

Prepared the haggis last night and cooked it this morning. Half of it is safely wrapped up in 2 small brioche parcels and is presently proving.

DS has made a last-minute dash to Morrison's - when he comes back and the bread's finished baking, we're off to the local with some friends for a couple of hours.

We've asked the womenfolk if they'd like to come, too, but they've politely declined!

Love the name change, positive! Fits you much better than the old one!

Cheers, everyone, have a good one! Xmas Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/12/2013 17:12

Moan alert. No need to read.

Been cooking all morning.
Just fed kids light tea as cba to cook and they will get loads tomorrow.
Kids being arses. DD not. Boys are. DH said excited about Christmas. I want to know what is their excuses for crap behaviour and awful table manners rest of the year.
Kids ate food I was going to have with dh before our treat dinner later.
DH poorly so won't be nice enjoyable meal I had planned.
pissed off as dh makes me feel like I am the one in the wrong even though he says not but is suppose it is because I know I am a shit parent and have no clue what I am doing
no room in fridge for choc log
no room in fridge to cool my one alcoholic bottle I wanted
dishwasher been on 3 times and needs another 2 loads doing
washing needs folding
call for help, always dd, never ds1.

BsshBossh · 24/12/2013 17:47

postmanpatsreindeer · 24/12/2013 17:47

Hope the boys shape up for you. It's not too late to cancel their Christmas!

BsshBossh · 24/12/2013 17:50

Just hit me in the head like a brick: 2014 is the year I reach and have to maintain goal weight. Wow, what an adventure maintenance will be! I'm a little bit excited and a little bit nervous... At least I won't be alone < love this thread and will be in good maintenance company>

TalkinPeace · 24/12/2013 17:52

Toffee
We have moved all of the spare milk / fruit juice / cheese / salami into the shed in a waitrose bag : it will be fine at 4 degrees out there for a couple of days
leaves space for the 'soon' stuff in the fridge
all of the vacuum sealed meat is out there too as its fine for at least a day or three

veg into canvas shopping bags - exclude light
or fruit
will be fine in the cool for days

sorry your DH is ill, but lets be honest, nobody slept well last night.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/12/2013 18:06

I think I will be okay getting everything in the fridge. 3 boxes are out for our dinner and I will take everything out and pack it better.

I am just fed up for DH. Every Christmas one of us is ill and I really wanted him to have a lovely time this year.

I have realised my bad mood is last day of period come down that seems to be the way for me now Confused. Just had some dairy milk and now enjoying some lambrini. Still feel like a shit mum though. Kids don't listen. I must nag them too much.

Emmabryant123 · 24/12/2013 18:27

Urgh.
Eaten to much.
Had weetabix and banana at 10am
And a gingerbread latte abiut 8am from Starbucks and dd's had hot chocs and cakes for breakfast lol.
Lunch time- Chinese buffet restaurant - little bits of noodles, rice, beef in black bean, chicken curry, dish of salad (coleslaw, lettuce, toms, cucumber, hard boiled egg), bean sprouts, mini spring roll, mini samosa, new potatoes.
Just now warmed mince pie and cream, three quality streets and four celebrations and two bottles of stella. Feel so fat and bloated?! Roll on 2nd jan and a fast.!

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 24/12/2013 18:31

Welcome Positive !
That's an excellent choice of name that suits your 5:2 success.

Toffee Glad your DD is helping. But your cats ! I thought boy cats and girl cats didn't fight.
Hmm
MrsF Nice and slim in your leather jeans pic.
When I'm in leather, I always like to have a whip and a handcuffed hunk.
Xmas Grin
I'm happy eating simpler fare, more time to Kindle for a lazy woman
I gave up wine back in NNN and don't miss it. I drink lots of Cranberry light juice - only 80 cals for a litre carton, so more cals for Choc !
Xmas Smile

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/12/2013 19:24

No one told my two! GirlCat put BoyCat into the vet a few weeks ago. He is the one forever jumping on her and yowling. It is horrible to hear. She has half his size and it worries me. Both are "done." She growls at him to warn him off a lot.

MrsFlorrick · 24/12/2013 19:57

Bigchoc Grin. Your taste in "accessories" is very good. Sadly I don't currently have time for hunks in handcuffs Wink

More cals for choc eh. Nice going. I may take that up. I used to drink loads of cranberry before DC came along. May get into that again. Grin

Toffee (((((Christmas hugs))))))
I want you to feel xmassy and cheery my friend Sad

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments. Smile

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/12/2013 21:30

Flowers MrsF. I just set up Christmas so much as all mine, bar one, as a kid were shit so I want it to be amazing for my children as well as me. But I have normal kids who are fighting loads, rude to me and make me feel like they aren't happy with what they have even though I know they are. DH is ill. I don't want to go to PIL and I am tired and fat.

ChristmasPudding6 · 24/12/2013 22:09

Merry Christmas for tomorrow everyone. Had a couple of gluehweins a few glasses of wine and feeling a happy tipsy.

Kids sleeping downstairs on the sofa bed tonight by the Christmas tree, DS2 has his camera at the ready to catch a shot of Santa when he arrives ;) ha ha. They have just put out the glittery reindeer food on the lawn to light the path to our house. They should be asleep soon. We got them a new film to watch whilst we've been doing last minute wrapping and it has serve us well with a few uninterrupted hours.

DH stuffing turkey as I type. So glad he does all that mucky stuff. It's really not my thing! But love eating the cooked outcome. Hoping I will manage to avoid eating in the morning so I can enjoy a good late lunch.

Toffee big hugs. I often feel like that about my parenting skills. But have just started reading that book as recommended earlier (how to talk etc) and its alreadya made my reactions to their annoying fighting habits change. I always find that as soon as I change my reaction the outcome can be so much better. Not perfect mind, but better. I need to read more than chapter 1 to get to a really peaceful household!!!

Anyway I hope the kids don't wake you all too early tomorrow. I shall finish my last glass of wine and try and remember what we wrapped in which paper so I can label them to the correct kids. Oooops

TalkinPeace · 24/12/2013 22:23

OOh, OOh,
he's just left Venice
www.noradsanta.org/

and you know that in the morning you can stall them till he gets to Hawaii ...

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 25/12/2013 00:01

Santa was very cross. It was Christmas Eve and nothing was going right. The elves were complaining about not getting paid overtime. The reindeer had been drinking all afternoon and the sleigh was broken. Santa was furious. ‘I can’t believe it!’ he yells. ‘I’ve got to deliver millions of presents all over the world in just a few hours – all of my reindeer are drunk, the elves are on strike and I don’t even have a Christmas tree! I sent that stupid little angel to find one hours ago! What am I going to do?’ Just then, the little angel opens the front door and steps in from the snowy night, dragging a Christmas tree. ‘Oi fatty!’ she says. ‘Where d’you want me to stick this?’ And thus the tradition of angels atop the Christmas trees came to pass.

Happy Christmasssssss everyone !

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 25/12/2013 02:08

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERBODY

We were without power all day since 2:30am last night! Too tired to moan about crappy cooking/prep catch up during this evening! The brief version includes the words tits and up.

My idea of what would constitute a successful/happy Christmas changed with every hour passed during today.

Am pleased/relieved to say I had a much needed 'Scrooge Christmas Carol' moment though. We escaped any serious damage, but being so rural and an electric only household we had no heating, hot water, hot drinks or anything energy fuelled all day.

I couldn't help but think about all of those poor souls in the Philippines. And a few years back with the Boxing Day Tsunami. Put things into perspective.

Have never gotten over the lottery of life. That being born in one country at a particular point in time determines how much you will suffer in your lifetime. Is so heartbreaking and so unfair.

So tmw (today) I will be savouring the simple things in life. The things that are simple to us, but the impossible for our fellow man/woman/child across the planet.

Will also be raising a glass to my darling big brother who I think of and miss more than ever this time of year. He would've been 38 this month.
Eight years have flown by but fortunately when I close my eyes, your smile, your voice, your smell, your hugs are still there X

As can prob tell been nicking Santas offerings! Plus an extra one or two for me! Also got the old unwanted 4 weekly visitor going on so sorry for the melancholic post.

Night All, hope you have a lovely Christmas xxxx

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 25/12/2013 06:28

IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!!

Merry Christmas to you all. Our first one at home and I'm wracked with the sudden terror that I am going to food poison everyone. Despite the fact I regularly cook large joints of meat and birds anyway. The only difference is that I've never done a roast for lunch before. Why oh why does the mind play tricks on you like this eh?

Now today is not a day for dieting peeps. Eat and drink what you feel like and sod the calorie count. You can have it today for a change. Just leave the stuffing for the bird and pay attention to your fullness indicators.

I shall raise a Wine to you all later.

BetsyJingleBells · 25/12/2013 06:29

Merry Christmas everyone! Some stocking frenzying going on here - kids very happy and now moving on to the sweet/choc eating frenzy phase. I am listening from my lovely bed Smile
