BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hopeful Great that you joined a gym.
I recommend starting with these classes:
-Spin for cardio fitness & fat burning. Easier on the knees than running.
-Pump for body shaping and maintaining lean muscle.

Have a happy holiday, then enjoy your training !
Xmas Grin

Hello people.

I'm FOC-ing up a bit. Fasted Friday, then a 5 am frenzy - 2 choux buns, a muller luxe choc yoghurt and a mince pie. Etc.

Just crazy all Over the place.

poshpaula yy to the feeling fat and heavy. Fasting does make my mood a bit odd but it make me so energetic like I'm weightless. Must be the fat-burning.

hopeful yy to the eating unmindfully when I don't really want it. If I was a single girl with no dependants is be so skinny by now but there are too many needs flying around.

And Xmas is turning out stressy - family shit.

Happy Xmas to all. I will be checking in.

XXXX

ChristmasPudding6 · 24/12/2013 07:58

Well yesterday's FD didn't pan out quite as planned. Let's just call it a mini fast as I did go about 20 hours until I caved in, polished off kids tea (at least it was healthy salmon) but once my appetite had started I agreed to ordering a curry (passanda, it was superb) with naan bread followed by about 10 Fortnum and Masons's chocolates. I still can't get over the fact that DH bought them. Worked out each individual choc costs just over £1!!!! For that I would enjoy a whole bag if cadburys giant choc buttons (only buy them when on offer for £1). Just another example of my inability to stop eating stuff I don't actually enjoy.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 24/12/2013 08:25

Morning all Smile

We have weather damage Sad.

All people are fine though Smile.

Just started making mince pies as the kids ate them all so none left fro Father Christmas Shock. I will also be making a chocolate log and Onion, Chive and Olive Bread. DH and I have M&S treats for dinner after the kids have gone to sleep so probably about 11 we will get to eat HmmGrin.

I know I said I wasn't going to weigh myself but I am doing the average thingy recommended by Dino and I am down a pound.

postmanpatsreindeer · 24/12/2013 08:29

Mmmm giant buttons Xmas Grin

hopeful I'm almost 46 so don't write yourself off yet! I wanted to get to the gym today but DPs boss wouldn't agree to him working from home so I have to look after DSD til he gets back. Gym shuts at 3 so it's unlike I'll get there.

DP did the Xmas food shop last night but I have to go out today to get the bits he couldn't get - like a turkey joint and a Quorn roast! Otherwise we might as well have beans on toast for Xmas dinner Hmm

Papayasoup · 24/12/2013 08:39

b&w thanks for that link which was interesting as I'm a bit of a lazy kneader.

Christmas dinner has been eaten, it is the afternoon of the 24th here and we go on holiday tomorrow. I'm stuffed but it was delicious and actually very nice to just be the 3 of us. Just enough leftovers for bubble before we head to the airport. Someone was beyond excited so the elves visited and left outside the door a present with the rest to arrive with Santa overnight. A long evening of wrapping awaits. But I've already had a few glasses of Wine and we have a movie to watch so hopefully will go quickly. If not possibly sloppily!
Had a cheeky earslap this morning, yum with more planned for tomorrow. And maybe tonight Xmas Grin!

Happy Christmas everyone!

MrsFlorrick · 24/12/2013 08:46

It's Christmas!!!! GrinGrin

Well I know you will all be waiting till
Tomorrow however given I am forrin, I am given to celebrate Christmas today.

Clearly PILs and DH only accept this arrangement because we also celebrate "British" Christmas tomorrow. Wink

So today is a day of roast pork with crackling, slow cooked vanilla rice pudding with flaked almonds and cherry sauce, cinnamon snails, pepper nuts, gloegg (mulled wine) and dancing around the Christmas tree whilst singing.

And tomorrow will be roast turkey with trimmings, Christmas pudding, stocking and opening presents in
The morning. Grin

In this house we do Christmas two ways. Sound good? Erm yes but double duty on the cooking and extra presents so we can open some today as well.

mummyof2girlsx · 24/12/2013 08:57

Happy Christmas Eve! mini fast today then going to enjoy treats later with DH and DC Grin

EarSlaps · 24/12/2013 09:00

Happy Christmas MrsF, can I come round for dinner? Sounds yum Smile. I'll even wash up.

I started the food prep last night- apple sauce, mulled red cabbage and sausage, apple and chestnut stuffing is all ready to go. Then peeling veg and cheese sauce for broccoli and leeks. Plus getting the joint seasoned (we're having pork instead of turkey).

Managed to get out for some exercise- a run with some intervals in- star jumps, high knees, squats, incline push ups and sprints. Feel much more alive now. Also waiting until lunch to eat, so can burn off yesterday's mince pies.

BsshBossh · 24/12/2013 09:02

Merry Christmas MrsF (and anyone else who also celebrates today). Your menu sounds delicious. We also do Christmas two ways (well three ways actually). Here's our menu:

Christmas Eve dinner for 5: roasted cod with sauteed potatoes, chermoula and tomatoes (DH cooks this)

Christmas Day lunch for 6 (we have main meal at lunch so DD can partake and enjoy): roast goose and all trimmings (eg pigs in blankets, brussel sprouts with pancetta, roast potatoes, pickled walnuts), Christmas cake (DH cooks all this; he made the cake too)

Boxing Day lunch for 13: lamb and apricot curry, chickpea and spinach curry, beetroot and paneer curry, chana dal, cardamom rice, raita, chutneys, chapattis, Christmas pudding and fruit salad (this is my and my mum's domain!)

Yum yum yum!

ChristmasPudding6 · 24/12/2013 10:05

My goodness. You are all a marvel in the kitchen department. I'm not a big cook. Do what I have to do to get by, though I do enjoy eating proper food when its made for me. DH is more into it than me. Also we didn't do Christmas at home when I was growing up, so I don't have any traditions, just the ones we are making up as we go along, or carried down through my DH's side. That's prob why I get so stressed as I feel like I don't know how to 'do' Christmas properly IYSWIM.

Anyway I will try and focus on kids and playing with them more than the food. It's really just a roast lunch with a few extra bits on your plate isn't it!?!?

I'm another daily weigher. Whoops. But thankfully I haven't done much damage yet. Still at my lowest point 10st 5lb. As long as I'm not over 10st 7lb on Jan 2nd I will be happy. Another mini fast today and will prob fast or mini fast on way to PIL later this week as it saves worrying about travel food. I will do the same on the way back. Other than that I will be taking a break.

rubbishfamily333 · 24/12/2013 10:12

Well I really feel off the 5:2 wagon yesterday, I didn't fast, eat lunch and dinner and a couple of biscuits then drank a bottle of wine and then eat nearly a whole bag of tortilla chips plain oh well I could have done alot worse before 5:2 so i will give myself a break for now. Christmas is too stressful to fast Confused

TalkinPeace · 24/12/2013 10:31

rubbish
Nah mate - you just moved your fast days .....

ELR
DH went to the school with the windmill ....

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 24/12/2013 10:32

Hi everyone,

Well I've only gone and broke my laptop. I was putting it down and dropped it, now it rattles and doesn't recognise that there is a hard drive there. So I'm back on the iPad, which us nowhere near as good.

Well I'm not fasting, mini fasting or doing 16:8 (though today I'm on the way for a 16:8 - just not going to try as I know I won't stick to it) so I'm only aiming to drink at leas 1.5 litres of water, I'd like it to be 2 litres, but I don't want to set myself up for a fall. Back to 16:8 on Sunday and maybe a couple of mini fasts.

I start work on the 6th Jan now so will have my first fast then.

If I don't come back on here hope you all have a wonderful Christmas.

Sorry for no personals, I find the iPad far harder than using a laptop or PC.

rubbishfamily333 · 24/12/2013 10:35

Talkin - maybe I did just move my fast day Wink but not sure when I can got it in this week now.

But on the much much much brighter side I am now 9 something GrinGrin 9.13.8 to be exact but it means I have hit my goal of 9 something for Xmas Wink well that is something to keep me motivated

rubbishfamily333 · 24/12/2013 10:36

Biscuits - enjoy Grin hope you have a wonderful Christmas

MrsFlorrick · 24/12/2013 10:41

Thanks everyone! Merry Christmas to all of you too.

Easlaps. If you're washing up, you're welcome to come and have both Xmas dinners Grin

My vanilla rice pud is well under way. Next stop is red cabbage, apple sauce, cider gravy (first stage) and scoring and salting the pork crackling.

But not until later. It's a Christmas dinner so we won't be having it until early evening. Normally you'd have it in the evening but the DC can't stay up that late to wait for dinner. And you'd do presents afterwards but web are doing them before because the DC are so young. Don't want them to be over tired before "British Christmas" tomorrow.

Hope you all survived the storm ok. We are in a huge 200 year old house. We had water seeping through some of the leaded windows last night not too much so fine.
We lost two small pieces of lead flashing around a chimney stack and an upstand on our roof terrace. So some leakage into master bed room and the second downstairs toilet by the back entrance.

Not bad all things considered.

The bedroom leak trickled down the chimney breast/stack inside but its exposed brick so no damage at all. It's dry now.

Back door toilet has a little peeling paint to will need one wall repainting.

Still with such an old house and leaded windows, we were worried the storm might shatter some of the leaded panes as the are not all that robust. We have had many repaired and refurbished but we have 23 massive windows in this house so its a long, ongoing and expensive task.

MrsFlorrick · 24/12/2013 10:54

Just had a neighbour round. They live in a modern house built 5 years ago at the end of our private road.
They have a flat roof section at the top of their house and the roof is a leaded one.

A third of their leaded roof came down last night and is laying on top of another neighbours car!Shock
Plus they have had ceilings come down as the rain came straight in once most of their roof disappeared. Sad
I feel so bad for them. It's Christmas. I have enough food so I invited them but they are going to a posh central London hotel after their insurance co have finished assessing and a temp roof covering installed.

And DH was complaining about living in a very old house this am! We didn't even have any tile slippage just two small 30 cm of flashing bent out of shape.

I've not checked the basement though Shock. We've got a well down there and I suppose I should brave it and check whether we are under water. Hate going in the basement. Find basements scary. Wibble.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 24/12/2013 11:00

Well done on your SV, Rubbish, especially achieving it despite all the Xmas temptations.

I forgot the sprouts!!!

Never mind, I can improvise with some frozen onions and lardons I have in.

DH poorly, currently trying to warm up in the bath. My choc log looks pretty good and I am now making lunch.

The cats have been fighting, one is hiding in a bag. DS2 is being naughty too.

postmanpatsreindeer · 24/12/2013 12:21

Well done rubbish who clearly is not rubbish at all even if her family are!

Merry Christmas MrsF and papaya and anyone else who's had a head start!

After a successful trip to Sainsbury's, I am off to make Grandma's red cabbage and pot au chocolate for tomorrow's dinner (but DP doesn't want my dessert so he is having the highly processed artificial crap dessert he bought in Tesco last night Hmm
