Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Toffee. WineWineWine For you.
Take 10mins and go and sit by yourself. I find the basement or utility are the only ones I can keep the DC out of so I sometimes hide there for just a few moments to reboot.

It's so tough when they are naughty and don't listen. It can drive you up the wall in ways folk without DC cannot possibly imagine.

We are all here for you. Thanks

And as for weight. If you don't look at the numbers on the scale just to see a pattern emerging or to see every day how far you've come - don't weigh daily. Weightloss doesn't work like that.

I read somewhere that what you ate last wee (as in 7 days prior) affects you current weight. Not what you ate yesterday or day before (that comes to haunt you a week later).

That's why you should only weigh daily if you find it interesting to see a pattern or if it reminds you how far you've come.

TheRaniOfYawn · 23/12/2013 16:09

I'm sorting down with a cup of Pukka vanilla chai which is lovely and warming. I've only had herbal tea and a mug of bouillon so far since 7pm yesterday. Dinner tonight will be a mushroom omelette, green beans with garlic, lemon juice and olive oil and a big salad.

I've been making bread sauce and watching as everyone else has lots of delicious things to nibble, so today has been a bit harder than usual. But I will get to eat nice nibbles tomorrow.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 23/12/2013 16:17

PostmanPat Great to see such energy, 20 km yesterday and 35 km in the week. I expect Miss (Tip) will give you a permission slip to skip today's FD !
Hmm

Good idea to minimise kitchen time to spend more time with her.
I'm minimising k.t. to spend quality time with myself, Kindle and My sprouted date cheesy bread.
Also, I refuse to scrape off food from the kitchen ceiling at Christmas.

Right, off to the gym now; their Espresso is so much better than my Nescafe version and releases energy for spin.

Thank you everyone for your kind messages and thoughtful advice.

Just got back from DD and DS2 osteopath appointments and a quick dash in ASDA. DS1 rang me to see where I was as scared of the wind Sad. I had changed my mind and let him stay at home while we went out as he had redeemed himself by making DD and DS2's lunch without me asking, loading and putting on the dishwasher and emptying the washer. I think he is obviously capable of doing more but is it fair to ask him to do those things for DD and DS2?

BoyCat just beat up GirlCat [sa]d. Is horrible to see. GirlCat once bit him necessitating trip to the vet and antibiotics. He had to be kept in for 3 days too.

I have fasted all day. Just had 2 left over small roast potatoes and a thin parsnip. What was so annoying is i only had them because i found them in the fridge when getting the kids yogurt out. Having baked sweet potato and cottage cheese for dinner at 7. Please tell them that is a fast day?? Does it leave me any room for anything else?[hopeful emoticon]

Will bear in mind your bedroom tidying advice TiP and implement it when necessary.

BsshBossh · 23/12/2013 16:35

BigChoc yes still FDing. Plan on LOFing until dinner then eat a small portion of my mum's egg curry in tomato sauce.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 16:50

Dino - I know nothing about apps but I do have an iphone. Is that something I could download or is it just for ipads?

I love how everyone is just getting on with things, not getting too upset if a fast doesn't go to plan and not feeling they have failed.

Merry Christmas to you too Southeastdweller.

I am not going to weigh myself at all before Christmas now and will just worry about it later. I have already seen that even when I allow myself to stuff my face it doesn't happen.

Just told the kids what I expect from them and what I don't like. I had barely finished my next breath before they repeated what I had asked them not to do Hmm.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 16:58

Just told kids about the bedroom tidying notices. DD said she will keep her room tidy. DS1 said do the notice anyway, add some spice to it Hmm. DS2 kept eating.

TalkinPeace · 23/12/2013 17:04

Toffee
definitely counts as most of a fast

FFS the weather is VILE out there - lets all stay warm and burn calories on bracing walks when its safe to.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 23/12/2013 17:12

Very busy day here, just perfect to keep me from eating the mince pies and snow bites in the kitchen! DCs presents unwrapped, a bit of shopping done. Popped into a charity shop and picked up a skirt. Delighted that it not only fit, but was labelled wrong - The hanger said small but I now own and fit into an item of size 6 clothing (from Jane Norman too, not renowned for generous sizing).

On the downside I had to pick up some deodorant - though I'm not sweaty I've noticed the Sure I'm using just isn't lasting. DH says maybe I just smell more now Hmm.

For anyone switching off over Xmas - have a great one.

Also, totally second what tip says. Stay inside now unless you can avoid it. Really awful out there.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 23/12/2013 17:13

The DCs presents have been wrapped I mean...

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 23/12/2013 17:25

Just enjoying a pre-training shake, my first cals in 18hrs.
Well, I was enjoying until I read about Betsy's Festive Thai soup.
Xmas Envy
No, I can't have it tomorrow: food never tastes as good scraped from my ceiling. You are all such good cooks, whereas I am just a good eater and kitchen redecorator !

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 23/12/2013 17:41

Godawful weather here too. I switched on the battery assistance for my eBike, or battling against that wind would have knackered me too much to train; that kind of training is no fun, the wind always wins.

Eat I read that late on FDs we burn ketones - Atkins, which uses ketosis, can cause smellier breath & sweat.

Food Thoughts

  • Betsy: Lead me not into temptation over food. I can too easily find the way myself.
  • I never eat more than I can lift

BetsyJingleBells · 23/12/2013 17:51

Sorry bigchoc - I won't tell you about the 'Nutty Bubbles' cocktail I just invented then…

Or the cinnamon snail dough that's proving…

TBH it's Christmas, what the heckins are you all doing fasting anyway????

Xmas Grin (will be Xmas Blush in January when I'm the only one bemoaning massive weight increase.)

DH muttered as he was eating the Thai soup "I am so lucky"

Yup, he is. Good man for acknowledging it.

The thai soup would be a suitable fast day meal - coconut is calorific yes but everything is chicken & veg - didn't bother with noodles or anything - waste of calories!

toffeeThat is definitely a fast day. Surely no more now until after Christmas?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 20:09

Is it still a fast day? Have had a piece of home made chocolate loaf.

Ds2 WILL NOT go to sleep. Lovely that DS1 and DD are playing a game together but why do they have to be so loud???

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 23/12/2013 20:43

Another morale boost yesterday at the gym: two women in the changing room said spontaneously that I had lost 10-14 lb the last couple of months. Both astonished when I said only about 4 lb.
Hmm
I know my bod is tighter everywhere. Especially my bum, thighs, calves are trimmer than I have ever managed; my hips just

I have got a waist Shock.

toffee, just had a look and the app can be used on the iPhone as well. I like it, but I am a bit of a geek and like numbers and charts and graphs!

postmanpat, 37km in a week isn't bad at all! Well done!

bigchoc, do you have before and after photos of yourself to admire for the times you are getting frustrated with slow weight loss? You must be looking great.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 21:09

Fab! Thanks. I take a look.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 21:12

Dino - I am installing it now. Any tips for using it as I have only downloaded one app before, which I haven't used yet?

BsshBossh · 23/12/2013 21:30

FD completed. 22 hour LOF. Feel great! Won't do fast tomorrow though will try and eat mindfully and moderately. Next scheduled FD on Friday.

Hello everyone and Happy Christmas Eve! It's Christmas Eve here, and DS3 jumped out of bed at 5 am, exclaiming,"Woohoo, it is Christmas tomorrow!". He is 5 and so excited about Christmas! Much more so than last year. It has been a bit of a shambles keeping the "santa" gifts separate and hidden. My DD wrapped them all, and then he found them hidden in my room. So she had to wrap them all again in another paper!

I had a lovely day yesterday, went to town, did some last minute gift shopping, had hair done and didn't get home until about 4. In that time I had had three pieces of toast and an atkins bar. If I had just skipped lunch instead of eating it when I got home, I probably could have had a mini fast. I really don't know why I ate a late lunch when I could have waited until dinner,as I didn't feel all that hungry. But then I was a total piglet and ate dinner, plus dessert!!Shock!! Oh well, never mind, I will fast on Friday!

Like others on the thread, I too have had weigh in disappointments. I thought weighing in the morning after a FD would show results, but that was clearly misguided, however, the loss does seem to turn up later in the week. I have decided to make Friday morning the weigh in day instead of Mondays (because after a weekend doesn't seem like a good time). However, I will not weigh in this Friday, after the eating Frenzy that is Christmas. I shall wait a week.

Wow, some people are champion exercisers on this thread. I really admire super fit people. I love swimming, so can do long distances and actually enjoy it, but running and me just don't seem to get along. I tried the couch to 5k last summer and my knees really didn't like it. I guess being this heavy is hard on the knees and being this old too doesn't help! I will stick with the swimming, but I know I need to add in something that is weight bearing - weights, yoga or something else. I recently joined a gym, but that was mainly to use the pool. I will look into going to some of the classes in the new year. Perhaps a weights class?

Well, I must get away from the computer and get into super organised mode - still so much to do for tomorrow...still feeling slightly resentful annoyed with my SIL and MIL for insisting suggesting we host Christmas. Then telling us not to go to too much troubleXmas Angry As if I could have all the family over without scrubbing the house from top to bottom, have the garden immaculate and all the food ready and delicious. I wish I didn't care and could just run the hoover over and be done with it, but alas, I am just not built that way. At least I know the house will be clean and I will enjoy it for a few hours days.

ThanksXmas Grin Merry Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Christmas Xmas GrinThanks

PoshPaula · 23/12/2013 22:46

Hi folks I am checking in. I have opted out of fasting for the two weeks I am off work over Christmas. I am already feeling heavy and a little bit miserable about myself as a result. But I know I am not able to fast when I am off work, at home with the kids and am cooking for England. Anyone else feel the same way?
