The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Not fasting today, will just skip breakfast instead (would say 16:8 but had mince pice at 9.30pm and can't wait until 1.30pm for lunch when you have small children). Had a nice cup of green tea this morning, will just have another herbal tea in a mo.

(((((Toffee))))) hope Christmas goes ok with your little terrors. I hate it when I get all shouty at the boys, it's horrible. Sounds like they're doing what they're supposed to. Have you read 'how to talk so kids will listen'? There is also one especially for teens. I love it, and often go back to reread when we get into a bit of a shouting rut. Calm definitely gets the best results with mine and stops my stress levels rising too much too.

We're away for Xmas. I did pack my workout gear but no idea if I'll manage much or any!

Not2bObvious · 23/12/2013 10:45

Kids can be the devil incarnate, no doubt Toffee*, I think you dealt with the situation v well. Hope the day goes smooth from here.
Well I have spent the last 2.5 hours packing as we are away for Xmas so I had to pack all the Santa stuff, and realised v quickly we have a luggage problem Xmas Confused so much as it killed me, booked in another bag on the flight. It's either that or take all the presents out of their boxes. Really annoying thing as on the way home, we'll have tonnes of space! Oh well I'll just have to buy lots of new clothes Xmas Wink
Attempting a 16:8, already feel hideously bloated which will be v enjoyable on a flight later on, not! Trying the strong coffee trick, see will it help the situation..ahem

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 11:09

Turkey - having a holiday at home is a really good way at looking at things.

Thanks MrsF. I have just finished TOTM and I had hoped that would bring me down. I have had 2-3 weeks before where I stayed the same or was up and down 2-3lbs and then suddenly lost. I haven't been calorie counting as I cook from scratch so much without always weighing things so find it hard to count but I would be very surprised if I am over TDEE. Having said that, I don't know what it is now I have lost a bit.

Won't be there for me when I tell you I smacked DS2. Harder than I would have wanted as well Sad. Did it as fed up of him doing what he has been told not too many times. He is doing what he has been asked to do now but it is a very slow process.

I haven't read How To Talk for ages. I have tried many times but can't get my head around it all and can't remember the tips.

DS1 just asked to go to PIL. I can't be bothered to take him to be honest so I said I would think about it. We are seeing them Christmas day, that is enough. Plus too much to do and taking him back and forth is not how I want to spend my day. If I just say no he will be not happy and has already said can he ring and ask. I have a problem saying no as I just get questions why and sometimes I just want to say because I said so!

BetsyJingleBells · 23/12/2013 11:36

Checking in! I'm not fasting but I've not been eating much (yet) - keeping it to 1 or 2 meals a day, plus cheese, plus cocktails. Definitely feel like I've put on some extra poundage already but no way I'm weighing in until the new year. That's just a world of pain I'm happy to ignore for a while!

Seem to be stocking up on interesting liqueurs. So far have discovered that cointreau mixed with hazelnut liqueur is divine. Just got some Chambord (raspberry) with which I'll definitely be drinking ChamChams! (Well ChamPro as I've got prosecco in, but that sounds a tad too much like SanPro to be a delicious drink!)

After skim reading poor toffee's post up there I'm very pleased that my own DS1 has made a decision that he's going to be nice to DS2, and thus the house is calm, fun and festive.

Isn't it odd how one person can massively affect the mood of a whole household? DS1 has always been like that. I suppose DH's mood affects us all too, though he's usually pretty cheerful.

Speculoos biscuit baking today! Family gifts to everyone from the children.

Making cinnamon snails/earslaps too - want them for breakfast tomorrow so wondering whether I should make them to dough stage tonight and leave it proving in the fridge overnight or not? Or should I bake them this evening and warm them tomorrow morning? Any tips mrsF (I'm following your recipe) or earslaps?

Ooh, may have spoken too soon about DS1. Turns out he's In.A.Grump.

Wow I'm trying to fast today but I already feel hungry Shock

I am still 10.0.2 so if I do manage to fast today that means I could possibly hit my goal of 9 something

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 23/12/2013 11:50

So this morning I weight myself and was 10 stone 12.6lbs. Good considering what Ive eaten this weekend. Not really in the right frame of mind at the moment. Had an early breakfast so thats 16:8 and a mini fast out of the running now Sad I know in Jan I can pull it down by the 5:2, but I just want to be fairly good until then. Im rubbish at this right now. Will next week be better? Once the Christmas films have ended and Christmas has finished I might be able to get back into 16:8 or have a couple of mini fasts before New Year. Then my first time in a long time I will fast on 2nd Jan then every Monday and Thursday after that.

We realised this morning that we didn't have enough nappies for DD2 so had to pop to the supermarket. DH suggested we should go for breakfast on the way which we did. So that's where my rather large early breakfast has come from, but I shall not eat now till tea at about 6. As we're not going anywhere tomorrow I might be able to do a 16:8. Though as its DD1s birthday on Wednesday we always give her a birthday tea on Christmas eve and this year she has asked if we can go to Maccy D's. We've not been for a couple of months so we are probably due a treat. So tomorrow (if I can stick to it) 200 calories throughout the day then come tea time just let loose until Friday.

I would rather not start the New Year in the 11 stones area. Will see the damage on Saturday and try to get it down a bit before New Year. Thats my plan anyway. Ive not done this properly for a month yet and I first started in October or so. I need more willpower and motivation. Its got up and gone and that's the thing that's getting me down now. I will NOT be a failure. I refuse to. Perhaps I should just make it my aim to drink 1.5 litres of water for the next couple of days. I can do that.

Will have a catch up with the thread now. You all talk far too much Grin

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/12/2013 11:56

Morning everyone, fasting today, and so far so good

Not planning LOF but will see how i fare, having the family round tomorrow for pizza and silly films so could do with not eating today Xmas Confused

Have been out for short run too, my cheeks are windburnt flushed with energy but it was too stormy for me to last long, one gust almost had me in the lake!

Will read the rest of the thread later, DD needs me now

Good luck fasters

EarSlaps · 23/12/2013 12:08

Betsy- I find 20 seconds in the microwave freshens the earslaps up beautifully. Means you can do all the hard work tonight and enjoy tomorrow. They also freeze really well, just let them cool and then put them in the freezer. Then you can just defrost and warm in the microwave.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 23/12/2013 12:12

Just read the thread (kind of - I skimmed it really)

I feel better knowing that other people are eating more than they would like to as well. Although a bit Envy that some are mananging double fasts Shock maybe next year once Ive been doing the 5:2 properly for a year.

I could do with going for a run, but the rain is just hammering it down and that would be no fun for anyone. Tomorrow's meant to be clearer I think I will try to go out tomorrow morning for a few miles (4 or 5 depending which route I feel like) Or I could stick Jillian on later. Thats a good idea and very tempting. I only have 30 day shred and haven't done it since I bought it before we moved (we moved in March 2012) Blush so now thinking of that is it really a good idea? Plus the dog just jumps around me and gets in my way.

I need to put my scales away, but like MrsF I weigh myself everyday. On a Sunday I work out my average for the week. I have a little chart showing heaviest, lowest and average weight that week. A little obsessive really I know, but I never trust the scales anyway so feel that working out an average gives me a better idea of how much Im losing/gaining. After all a couple of pound up could just be a toilet trip or bloating.

Im looking forward to the 2nd Jan too Emma. I know all I need is a good FD to give me my mojo back and keep me motivated. With this sort of thing the more you do it, the easier it is to be motivated. Once you lose that motivation (like I have again) its hard to get it again.

Turkey Good to hear you enjoyed your panto. Ive not been to one for years. The DC's have been with school so I haven't bothered. I should do it next year.

Toffee (((((hugs))))) to you, hope you are feeling better with the legal stuff you mentioned.

Right Im off for some water.

TalkinPeace · 23/12/2013 12:26

Hi all.
Taking a break from processing a VAT return so popped in here.

(((( Toffee ))))
Do not do the room thing in the run up to Christmas.
Save it for the weekend before the start of term but do feel free to read them this

Dear kids
My imaginary friend Tip gets her kids to not fight and keep their rooms tidy with the threat of this - and she thinks I should do it to you ...
Day 1 - a sign on your bedroom door giving two day warning of room tidying
Day 2 - second warning
Day 3 - while you are out I will remove EVERYTHING from your rooms that is not put away where it goes. You may never see it again.
Now my darling children, do you want that to happen to you or do you promise to behave for the next week

I'm used to being used as the ogre by clients - lets see if it works on your kids Xmas Grin

TalkinPeace · 23/12/2013 12:26

PS
Its too dark, windy, rainy and generally foul to fast so I am having a small sarnie prepared by DH for lunch.
Back to the VAT and tax returns.
Happy Yule.

Laska42 · 23/12/2013 12:40

Hi all, as lots of us (like me) are going into our 2nd season of Christmas on 5:2 I've started a surviving the festive season Hints thread here do come contribute - even if its your first 5:2 Christmas Xmas Grin

BetsyJingleBells · 23/12/2013 12:58

earslaps Hmm, no microwave but I'll bet a few minutes in my oven will do the job too. I will do them tonight :)

OP posts:
rubbishfamily333 · 23/12/2013 12:59

Well I'm not going to fast now Hmm I'm in too much of a bad mood Hmm

Laska42 · 23/12/2013 13:10

rubbishfamily333. come on, Girl, you can do it! Isn't 9st something worth it for Christmas ?

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 23/12/2013 13:34

Toffee
Extra big hugs (({})) that you have all those legal & newspaper worries, especially this time of year.
Sad
Your DCs probably act up more than they otherwise would, because they can sense you are stressed. However, they may be too young for you to ask for their consideration.
Your cats just sound like feline hooligans, but I expect you love them too !

I feel so sorry for you, but feel free to vent all you want on this thread, because we are here to support each other.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 23/12/2013 13:45

Scales:
For several years, I have noted my daily weight, food intake (without cal count) and exercise, as part of my exercise diary. However, I am a scientist who likes numbers, so they have no emotional effect on me.

Toffee You're stressed by daily wiins - maybe you could weigh every 2 weeks ? If you wear clothes that fit reasonably, you would soon notice if you gain weight, so no danger of missing that.

I'm FDing today, zero cals so far, but I'm spinning this evening, so I may have a shake before / after.
Toffee, Bssh Are you still up for this FD ?

Laska Thanks for the link to the Xmas survivor tips.
I put on a stone last Nov-Jan, so I'm ADFing all December. Maintaining easily so far. I'll read what others are doing there.

DinoSnores · 23/12/2013 14:14

I am another scientist, so I weigh myself every day and it doesn't have much emotional effect. I like the Happy Scales iPad app that smooths all the measurements out for you so those daily ups and downs are balanced out. I think someone mentioned the Libra app for Android but I didn't like the look of it as much, or indeed the adverts for Friends with Benefits dating at the bottom!

Anyway, I had FDs on Monday and Wednesday and compared to last Monday, I have lost 1.4kg so I am pleased with that. Today is another fast day and it is miserable and cold outside so I am finding it a bit more difficult!

postmanpatsreindeer · 23/12/2013 14:21

dino that's a great loss! When I was aiming to lose, not maintain, I was a daily weigher too. I just do 1-2 times a week now. I've been v steady for the last month despite my indulgences. I must have had four Costa hot chocolates in the last week, although I do ask for skinny without cream! I've also run 37km, that probably helps too Hmm.

postmanpatsreindeer · 23/12/2013 14:21

PS The 37km was just in the last week!

Emmabryant123 · 23/12/2013 15:11

It's so hard this time of year to,
Just going to the shops and seeing everything.
Well today is a 16:8 for me,
Ate plain porridge made with semi skimmed milk and chopped banana at 11:45am.
Dinner about 5 is:
Pizza, garlic bread, onion rings, salad bits and pickles and coleslaw.
Not going to calculate calories can't be bothered but I don't reckon I'll be over tdee. I'll have two slices pizza, four onion rings, two pieces garlic bread and lots of salad!

Southeastdweller · 23/12/2013 15:18

Just in Starbucks now having a skinny hot choc before going to my family home for a few days. I'll be without internet access whilst I'm there so I wanted to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and to your families Xmas Smile

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/12/2013 15:21

Well done Dino, that's a great result!

MrsFlorrick · 23/12/2013 15:44

Betsy make them and reheat tomorrow. Dough proving overnight rarely works for me. It tends to end up like ciabatta.
