The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm with you, Bssh! Started already - in that I finished eating at 8 tonight, and I won't eat again until dinner tomorrow. Might make that a low-cal meal, not decided yet.

Possibly same again on Tuesday - but I'm very flexible!

Earslaps well done with your 4-year-old - I blame the parents, you know! Smile

His writing is still quite poor and school are going to work really hard on it next term with him. But tbh I think it's more that his writing level is so far behind his reading level rather than that it is bad compared to the other children.

Hope the school doesn't make a big issue out of this - 4 yrs old is very young, after all!

I wonder if my "Writing game", which I developed for pre-school children could be adapted for your son?

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 22/12/2013 21:21

Fasting tomorrow here too. I think its going to be a proper one rather than a mini one.

Exhausted after my trip to see DF. Everything seemed very positive today thankfully, though still not sure if he will be out by Christmas. He was desperate to know if we'd still come and see him just after Christmas as we'd originally planned, but I told him that was a decision to be made nearer the time depending on how he felt. He wants to see the DCs badly but was very happy to hear DD cried that she couldn't come to see him (as bad as that sounds - but you know what I mean).

And in other news - its blooming' freezing init? Proper brass monkeys and all that… Not sure if thermals are going to cut it tomorrow. Is it possible to double thermal?

Breadandwine · 22/12/2013 22:11

Glad you've got some good news to report, Eat!

Hope he makes it out for Xmas and that his GC get to see him soon!

BsshBossh · 22/12/2013 22:50

Breadandwine I'm considering fasting Tuesday also. It'd be my first ever back-to-back. DH is baking fish for the Christmas Eve evening meal and guest are busy all day doing various things so I might be able to get away with a Tuesday FD or mini FD if I feel like it. We'll see.

Definitely a Monday FD though. See you all tomorrow for check-ins.

ChristmasPudding6 · 22/12/2013 23:08

Well done for keeping the thread busy this weekend. I've had a few NFDs and been a right grumpy pain the a**e to my whole family. Must be TOTM. Hate this feeling and the effects on everyone else but short of curling up in bed and having a good cry to myself (which I did do at some point) I don't know how to escape these ferocious mood swings Sad

Thankfully I felt almost human and humane today and enjoyed a trip into London with obligatory visit to Fortnum & Masons and DH bought me a lovely cashmere jumper from the Burlington arcade. Plus we all enjoyed a few family games now that the boys are getting the hang of playing properly. Just a shame it'll be another year before DD can join in without causing havoc.

I shall be joining you on an FD tomorrow. Likely to be 36 hour v low cal (LOF). Last one before Xmas and trip to inlaws.

Thanks B&W for two great links. Exercises and kids writing. DS2 was born end of August so is slow with the fine motor skills and hates trying anything he can't do well, like writing!!! To have something that'll make it more fun will be great. Thankfully he seems to be doing well in school in general.

Eat I'm so pleased to hear ur DF is doing well and I'm glad u have been able to get things off your chest with ur mum. I hope things will get better with ur family politics.

Turkey, MrsF and BigChoc thanks for bringing a smile to my face with your chatter when I was feeling down.

Fingers crossed I'm over the worst of my down time so that I can actually enjoy Xmas day and give my kids fond memories (rather than the "I hate Christmas" vibe I've been shouting these last few days!! I feel so guilty!!!)

hopefulgum · 22/12/2013 23:11

Eat, glad to hear your DF is improving. I hope it all goes well and you can see him after Christmas with the children.

Yesterday's fast day went really well. It was much easier than doing it when I am working. I thought it would be the other way around, but because I was so busy, I hardly noticed how hungry I was (until about 4 pm, when my stomach started to growl, even though I had a plateful of vegies for lunch).

I dug up some new potatoes from the vegie patch, so although I usually don't eat white potatoes I made an exception, and boy was it worth it! Also had a piece of fish and other vege and was very full after dinner. Amazing!

I am starting to feel a bit less stressed and more relaxed about Christmas.

Dh has finally got off his lazy arse and spent all day yesterday organising and tidying outside, getting ready for all the family coming on Christmas day. I actually miscounted, and it is 21 for lunch (still huge!).

I have ordered all the food online - I can't bear the thought of stepping into a supermarket, and the house is tidied and ready. Now it is a matter of waiting for all the food to arrive tomorrow and preparing most of it on Christmas morning. We are having salads and roast meats. DH is in charge of the meat and I am doing the salads.

Yesterday was quite warm and after spending a couple of hours weeding the garden I took my two youngest kids to the beach and had a body surf. It was just what I needed. Getting knocked around in the waves certainly knocks the tension out of me.

I was going to do another fast day today, but instead have decided to do it on Friday. I think my body will need a break from food by then.
The hardest thing about Christmas will be keeping within TDEE. Who am I kidding, it just isn't going to happen is it??Xmas Grin

Somewhere thanks for the recipe. I have printed it out and plan to make it for Christmas morning. I am gluten intolerant, so that recipe will be perfect. I often use coconut flour and coconut oil too. The only ingredients I don't have are the soya flour (which I really don't like, so I may substitute another GF flour) and the rice syrup (which I will pick up today). I think it will make a special Christmas breakfast for me when everyone else is having croissants.

Just curious, on your fast days, do you have a small lunch, or go all day until dinner with only drinks?

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 22/12/2013 23:13

Blimey Bssh, you are keen. You've motivated me too: I'm not sure I want a 2nd double FD within a week, so I'll make Tuesday a mini-FD.

We're either mad or very keen 52ers.
Xmas Smile
Anyone else doubling up ?

EarSlaps · 22/12/2013 23:29

Thanks B&W, he might like that. I'll give it a try.

Papayasoup · 23/12/2013 00:01

Morning!
eat glad to hear DF is doing better

hopeful good you've managed to escape the Christmas stress and get out and enjoy the surf and being with DC

mrsf I am envious of all the cooking you have been doing. I put together a batch of earslaps and they were delicious although I need to work on my technique a little. After having eaten about 3 on Saturday I've packed them up in the freezer for Christmas morning. I love pepper nuts, not dissimilar to speculoos that we eat, of which I have a good stockpile left from st Nicolas's visit earlier this month. Slowly working my way through it!

I rather overrate this weekend. Saturday was Christmas biscuits, ear slaps and a Thai takeaway I wasn't even hungry for. Needless to say felt a bit bleugh yesterday morning. Sunday was a bit more restrained but we went to a Christmas open house at friends and I wasn't drinking as driving but nibbled all throughout the afternoon, lasagne, sausage rolls, crisps, cheese, the lot! However as I didn't drink much all weekend the scales weren't as bad as they could have been this morning.
Today I'm trying LO mini-fast until tonight and then we have a Christmas party. It's my last morning in the office before 2 weeks off, hurrah, and then I've got the gym and getting my hair done so I'll be nice and busy so should be doable. Got my first cup of tea on the go already!
Tomorrow I'll try a mini fast until we sit down to our Christmas lunch, so actually it'll be more of a 16:8. And then that's it until Jan 6th

MrsFlorrick · 23/12/2013 00:43

Papaya. Grin
Yes pepper nuts are of a similar vein to speculoos. Also nice. As are German lebkuchen. Yum yum.

Bad time of year for healthy and moderate eating eh.

Ended today on 1280 cals!Shock Quite something considering I didn't eat until dinner at 7:30.

Slow cooked beef pie with creamed spinach beans and kale crisps followed by 2 ear slaps and a load of pepper nuts. Ear slaps and pepper nuts undid my Impromptu FD completely Grin

Trying to sleep but DS keeps shouting for me and DH is snoring so loudly the house is shaking.

Good luck to all the fasters tomorrow. I suspect I won't be fasting as we are having people over in the afternoon for tea and Earslaps and PILs with their 6 meals a day will make temptation hard to resist.

I will try to stay off the ear slaps given that MFP has my recipe in at 360 cals per earslap! Wow! I could easily eat 4 or 5 so that would be my TDEE used up for the day.... Perhaps I shouldn't have handed that recipe out for them. It will all be my fault if you're not all SWOTH. ConfusedConfused

Papayasoup · 23/12/2013 02:15

Oof, to the calorie bomb that are ear slaps. But they are so good that they are worth it and so much fun to make with DD. She loves helping in the kitchen and is actually becoming a real help. She was kneading like a true little trooper!

TheRaniOfYawn · 23/12/2013 07:04

Morning all. Checking in for a fast day today.

Eat, I'm glad that things are looking good for your dad.

I've had a lovely weekend. My dad came to visit on Saturday and we went to see Father Christmas and eat Tudor mince pies at the local museum before going home and playing lots of board games. Yesterday we had an open house and saw lots of friends. I suspected I exceeded my TDEE from scoffing mince pies, Christmas biscuits, peppermint bark and mulled apple juice.

My 4 year old godson has apparently come down with a vomiting bug since leaving our house so I am really hoping he hasn't infected us all.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 07:49

Morning

Sorry to be moaning Minnie today but I need a hug. Been talking to DH about my legal stuff and I just feel so sad, worried, scared about it all. DH has also warned me about yet more related stuff in the media so I can't watch the news or read the paper today. Both things I like to do as I wanted to be a journalist as a kid.

Then I weighed myself and am 11 stone 5lbs. I can't understand what is going on and wonder if I should just stop weighing myself but then what if I put loads on without realising and not just 3lbs. I had no clue I had put 2 stone on after I got ill. I need to understand the best time of the WOL to weigh myself to maximise the chance of some weight off. I still need and want to lose a bit more.

Eat glad to hear your dad is feeling better and I hope everyone gets to see him soon.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 07:50

TiP - I am planning on putting the tidy your room note on the kids doors today, remind me what I am supposed to write as I feel empty of brains today.

Not2bObvious · 23/12/2013 08:06

Toffee Monday wi's are always dodgy. You couldn't/didn't gain 3 lbs, it's just fluid & undigested food after the weekend. If fluctuations are likely to derail/upset you then for this week (let's face it this will be a big food week) yes absolutely put the scales away and do not visit it until Christmas is over, normal eating is resumed and you have 2 good fasts under your belt. That's my plan, my own scales is glaring at me from the corner of my room but uh uh not going near it cause I know the weekend will weigh heavy and it'll put me in a fouler.
Very sorry you're suffering from stress from your situation. Not sure what that is but obviously it's v distressing. If you had time, could you try some mindful techniques? Some breathing exercise? I'd love to gave better suggestions but my main thought would be this should be a lovely few days for family, kids love it (and the big kids in us too) Focus on that rather than anything else maybe? Feel better and (((hugs))))

Not2bObvious · 23/12/2013 08:13

Oh and I wouldn't engage in combat with kids today, if any things bound to bring you down that'll be it. Day for choosing your battles as I think if I remember the tidy your room notes being like an eviction notice for un-homed possessions Xmas Grin but if I've got it wrong sorry Tip. I could be confusing it with my version which is roaring at them that if doesn't find a home I'm binning it.
I'd attempt "ok honeys lets all do a tidy ten " set the timer, make a competition with a prize...possibly sweets, yep shameless briber over here!

Coveredinweetabix · 23/12/2013 08:44

I'm just popping in to wish you all a Merry Christmas. I'll be back in the NY for more fasting as I want to lose another stone plus whatever I gain over the festive period (usually half a stone or so).
For those of you who are sticking to this WOE over the next few days, well done! My own will power has slipped somewhat given how laden the cupboards are and I may have just had a Cadbury mini roll with clotted cream on top as a sort of pudding to breakfast. Actually, all in this household may end up fasting as I've got my online order scheduled to be delivered this evening and the forecast is atrocious.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 09:24

Not2b - thank you, I will fast today as much as possible and then not weigh at all until much later.

DS1 is being obnoxious. Shouted at his younger brother so I took his lap top off him. He then slammed his door so I went in to take his iPod off him. I asked for it - he had hidden it - so he called his brother an idiot and then threw the iPod at me. It hit my arm and it really hurt. I came off the phone to DH to find DS1 in my room and telling me he had just giving himself Calpol. I said under no circumstances was he to give himself medicine and he said no one was taking any notice of him. He wasn't very well Saturday night but seemed fine yesterday if a little tired. I have moved all the medicine from the kitchen cupboard. At least he took the right dose and not too much.

I decided against the notes and have just told the kids what is expected of them. DD and DS2 stopped the attitude and are now doing their rooms. DS1 acted as above but is now doing his room after I found him chilling on his bed reading.

Seems a long time until I can eat. NSV thought. Found a sweet when tidying and normally I would have just eaten it but I am not a dustbin so it is on the side.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 23/12/2013 09:36

Mornin!

Panto was fab. I laughed my head off. Got told off by dd for laughing too much at one point but I had the real giggles. Best show like that I've been to.

Am going to be busy all day again but am lurking when get chance.

Possible fd for me today. Will see how it goes.

Tbh - I haven't had a holiday home or abroad since 2008 so taking this period as a chance to unwind and switch off. Obviously would love to incorporate 5:2 into that, but in the spirit of true switching off I am just going with the flow each day. If I gain - I'll sort it out in New Year when I am back from holiday.

Hope you're all well and starting to enjoy the festivities. For us cooks it's 50/50 work and play isn't it. Or is that 70/30?! Anyway trying to get my military operation cooking plan into motion to minimise kitchen time tmw and wed and spend it with dd as a family instead.

Goodluck fasters !!

Emmabryant123 · 23/12/2013 09:52

Morning all.
Have not managed a fast for over a month now and have decided will be back in the new year.
I am actually looking forward to jan 2nd in some ways (first day back at work and not taking any food in with me) as silly as it sounds I'm looking forward to it...
Merry Xmas to all on this thread.
My tummy hurts after yesterday,
Breakfast- jam on toast
Dinner- cottage pie and veg with a 2nd un needed helping
Pud- crumble and custard
Urgh. Woke up an hour ago have only had some orange juice and a cuppa tea with semi skimmed no sugar but not even hungry so may just be a one meal today (pizza n garlic bread for dinner I think today)
Well done to everyone on here managing to fast still over this festive period.

postmanpatsreindeer · 23/12/2013 10:01

Morning all! Good luck today's fasters, I'm not joining you. Ran 20km yesterday (12.4 miles) so that has taken care of my excesses for a few days.

Hope the weather isn't too bad for you all, the kids and DH's behave themselves and Santa is generous to you x

rubbishfamily333 · 23/12/2013 10:11

Turkey - if you are doing 16:8 and sticking to tdee are you hoping to loose weight or maintain?

MrsFlorrick · 23/12/2013 10:21

Toffee ((((hugs))))).
We are here for you!!! Also over the festive period.

Breadandwine · 23/12/2013 10:35

Kudos to your DD, Papaya! My grandson also loves kneading - here he is in action.

MrsFlorrick · 23/12/2013 10:38

Oh and toffee. Re "weight gain".
I've not eaten over TDEE since last Wednesday. I had full 24 hrs LOF Thursday and ended on 600ish cals. LOF Friday till evening and then 1500ish cals. Saturday was 1200ish cals. Yesterday was my impromptu LOF till dinner time which ended at just under 1200 cals

And despite this I'm 159lbs this am. For the last 8 weeks I have been stuck between 158 low and 160lbs high.

But no I've not put weight on over weekend. I didn't ahem "go" yesterday so that's my "extra" pound BlushBlush

Anyway you catch my drift.

I've mentioned before that I weigh daily. It's to keep me on the straight and narrow.

You see an interesting pattern emerging too. And you don't generally see a massive whoosh of weighloss day after a FD, its generally several days later.

And for me TOMT arrives Boxing Day so I'm currently looking bloated (grrrr. Hormones!!!!).

So I've still got my last few lBS to lose and as you can see, we are weight twins Grin.

I've not done any exercise (as in JM workouts) in the last 7 days. I didn't want to do HIIT with a cold. Just didn't fancy doing strength training either (lazy arse).

Restarting my JM Ripped in 30 on 27 and 27 is most def absolutely a FD with LOF as long as I can manage!!

Toffee my friend. Stay calm. You will lose the weight. It's annoying to stall and bob around on the same lbs for a long time (I should know) but it will come.

For me when it comes I will
Finally reach goal. So a big something to aim for!!!

(Hands round calorie free ear slaps and pepper nuts a mulled Wine)
