Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning All!

Just popping in to say hi. We're off to panto soon.

Oh yes we are!

Rubbish supposed to still stick to tdee. The two main points of a 16:8 are: a longer fasting period since you last ate (16 hrs) and the idea that within only an 8 hour period you may be less tempted to eat so much. Sticking to tdee or just under.

BigChoc Milk carton Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin

Thought I'd just share that although I have been stepping into Christmas quite enthusiastically on food and drink front, I have been making it a real mission to keep my water intake very high.

This is definitely working it's magic. The only days I have felt bleurgh and very bloated are those when I didn't drink as much. This is especially helpful when drinking alcohol. If at home, get a jug of water and keep glugging it back. Didn't spoil my enjoyment of wine last night one bit and this morning I'm fresh as Daisy, flat as pancake (the good way Xmas Grin ) and tmi my motions have been flowing wonderfully!
Neither speeding to the exit point, or Sunday driving.
Feel beautifully light and empty.
Could also still be drunk Xmas Grin hah! NO! Am sober as. Just bigging up the water.
Oh and with glasses I have those tall practically pint sized. So it is several litres a day.

MrsF good luck today with fil. Enjoy Dh in good parent for pil mode!

Eat hope all goes/going well with Df. Best wishes to you all Thanks

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 22/12/2013 10:55

Oooh you lot have been chattering a bit last night didn't you.

Well had a hell of a lot yesterday. A few cheeky drinks and even more food. Back to 16:8 today until Wednesday. Tomorrow Im going to do a mini fast too. Was going to do one today as well too, but I dont think I can stick to under 1000 cals as my dinner is 700 cals then we have cake. So 16:8 and mindfull eating it is.

22 for Christmas Shock Good luck Hopeful.

Enjoy the panto Turkey

rubbish Ive been doing 16:8 for a week or so now. I was trying to stick to low calorie, but it was just stressing me out. I am also so hopeful about this WOL now so the same about trying not to go too mad most days. Looking forward to my first fast on 2nd Jan and the beginning of 5:2 properly.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 22/12/2013 11:25

good news. ish. df was well enough and with it enough to text me this morning. looks like Hes come through the worst of his latest set back. fingers crossed for no more set backs. I'm off to see him in a bit.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 22/12/2013 11:31

eat That's good to know, hope he continues to improve

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 11:49

Back from Waitrose. Spent more than expected but got everything on the list except my wine. While waiting to go in a man banged on the door as it was 9.34 and he was told they would open at 9.30. I told him not to bang on the door as it was rude. I think people were Shock I had said something to him but I was annoyed. Shops do not have to open early for browsing so be grateful for anything extra if it happens. The shop opened at 9.45. It was all civilised and I rushed around fairly quickly so I didn't get stuck as I preferred that to taking longer, buying more things and then getting stuck at the till for ages.

One quick run into Asda tomorrow after the kid's osteopath appointments tomorrow and that is it.

I am roasting gammon for lunch today but haven't done as many accompaniments as I normally would do as we are having a roast on Wednesday at home (yum) and another at PIL on Thursday.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 11:50

That is great news, eat.

Not2bObvious · 22/12/2013 12:38

Quick check in, liking the water advice Turkey, badly need some help on the motions, worth a shot! Too much choc/wine is taking its toll and I am exhausted, out last night with friends, not too much drink but very little sleep and I'm shattered. Have fasted since my 2am toast fest so will be breaking that in about an hour with a roast , nom nom. Fantasising about gravy, weirdo!
Good news about your df Eat, must be a relief to have some improvement

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 22/12/2013 12:54

Missed the bit about water. I must say over the last couple of weeks I have tried to drink at least 1.5 litres a day. I have two 1 litre bottles which I fill up and put in the fridge on a night. I try to drink both over the course of the day. So true about water with alcohol to avoid hangovers, I swear by it now especially when I drink wine as Im a real lightweight when it comes to that.

The only problem is the need to go to the toilet every 5 minutes.

TalkinPeace · 22/12/2013 13:09

Eh up all.

Stonehenge : did that a few years back with the kids for Winter Solstice.
It was a fantastic party - lots of folks our ages with their kids
all the kids clambering all over the stones
the brew crew providing cabaret

summer solstice I'll wait till they are a bit older ;-)

chilling today - finally getting round to making and sending out Christmas cards!

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 22/12/2013 15:03

Hey Turkey . Good reminder about drinking lots of water. I tend to forget this on NFDs due to serious concentration on eating.

Enjoy being a dame at the Panto. But no snacking
Xmas Smile

MrsFlorrick · 22/12/2013 17:42

Baked double portion of cinnamon snails. Triple portion of pepper nuts. Slow cooked beef steak chunks with mushroom and onion in mushroom ketchup and that Heston Beef finishing jus to put in a steak pie for us and PILs later.

Hoovered washed floors tidied and did 4 loads of laundry. Phew. I'm utterly exhausted now. It wasn't meant to be a FD but I've had nothing to eat yet so if I eat the beef pie filling and some veg (and some pepper nuts or a glass of Wine) then it will be an FD! Hurrah.

It will help offset the monumental eating which is about to take place!

Still need to full catch up so will be back later.

The house smells amazing. The combo of cinnamon snails and pepper nuts has really revved up the Christmas factor. Grin

It's chriiiiiiiiiiiiiistmaaaaaaaaaas! Merry Christmas one and all on this Thread and to all your families. ThanksWineWine

MrsFlorrick · 22/12/2013 17:57

Eatriskier. Glad to hear your DF is improving. Hope you are ok?! It's hard when close relatives are ill and exhausting when there are family politics on top.

Turkey. Enjoy Panto. Grin

Bigchoc. Been swinging any hunks today??

TIP. If you went to Stonehenge now you'd be disappointed! The stones are all fenced in now. You can only enter from the other side of the motor way. Pay £20 each and go under a tunnel under the M way and be herded around in a fenced off enclosure to "view" the stones. Hmm

Been to a summer solstice at the henge once in my yoof in the early 90s. It was a bit mad. But amusing to watch.

Toffee. How are you??

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 22/12/2013 18:06

Christmas

What if there had been Three Wise Women instead ?

Three wise women would have:
-Asked directions
-Arrived on time
-Helped deliver the baby
-Cleaned the stable
-Made a casserole
-Brought practical gifts
..... And there would be peace on Earth

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 18:17

Hi everyone

I have a poorly DH, 2 rude children who DH strictly disciplined and 2 AWOL cats.

I am fed up. I spend all week looking forward to the weekend to see DH and then Sundays just end up with me in the kitchen all morning cooking and washing and the kids all in their rooms on lap tops. Too tired to do the proper family thing of Sunday board games, etc.

The kids are getting a crack course of certain jobs need doing more than once on some days! And that mummy will teach you naughty words if you don't stop being naughty!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 18:18

Too true BigChoc!! Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 18:19

Sorry MrsF forgot to say hello.

How has your day been?

How is Disney Dad? Hmm.

TalkinPeace · 22/12/2013 18:40

MrsFlorrick
Stonehenge : not at the solstice - they open them at both summer and winter from midnight until 10am
we were there five years ago for the winter one
have not done the summer one for a few years Wink

((((( Toffee )))))
Train your DH to do Sunday lunch .....
I grow and pick the veg and buy all the stuff, he is the roasting king
kids do all of the table etc
all roasts are done long and slow (other than beef) so that today we had time for a game of Monopoly while it was cooking ...

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 22/12/2013 19:07

So today is a write off. Was going for a 16:8, but dinner was late and wasn't even ready for when I wanted to finish eating. Also have cake for later too, which is too nice not to eat. Can't decide if Im upset or not. How much weight can I really put on? a pound, two pounds, a stone Shock. Roll on January.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 19:19

TIP DH would do any cooking I wanted him too but tbh I love to cook and in days gone by chose to do it rather than be with the kids Blush. I was ill in my defence. The kids are all about their lap tops at the moment so getting them out of their rooms is hard but I am going to make an effort to make them as it sometimes feel like 5 people who share a house and not a family Sad.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 22/12/2013 19:26

Toffee I hope your DH is better in time for Xmas.

You sound like Cinderella and you need a rest, so you can enjoy Xmas too. Tomorrow, why not order in pizza or something, so you don't spend the day in the kitchen ? Your DCs would probably enjoy it at as much as your delicious home-cooked meals

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 19:30

I have bought jacket potatoes and fish fingers for the next two days meals for the kids, something light before 2 days of roast dinners. I do love to cook but sometimes the lack of appreciation and having to dream up ideas gets a bit much. I also can't stand it when the kids say they are hungry without just coming out with it and asking for something to eat - out of normal meals times - as if we would ever deny them food. Though DH didn't let DD and DS2 have their lunch with us today due to being very naughty.

I am looking forward to cheese on toast in a bit but can't be bothered to do it.

BsshBossh · 22/12/2013 19:53

Wow, lots of weekend chatting on here. Will try and catch up soon. In the meantime eatriskier glad your DF is a bit better.

Just found out the first of our house guests is arriving tomorrow instead of Tuesday so today has been a bit of a mad rush. Ocado Christmas delivery arrived at 6 but is now sorted into boxes and shoved under the kitchen table to be plundered as and when needed.

I Hoover & dusted the house and DH deep cleaned bathroom & kitchen. We finished all the laundry for all the spare bedding needed.

Phew, this Christmas lark is tiring. Luckily DH is responsible for the Christmas Day meal (goose and all trimmings; he made the Christmas cake too) and I'm responsible for the Boxing Day meal (with a bit of help from my mum - an Indian meal).

Last minute food shopping still needed tomorrow and Tuesday though.

Ate too much cake today so looking forward to tomorrow's FD. Who else is FDing tomorrow?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 20:23

I have had dh get the kids to tidy up the lounge today but haven't planned on a full on clean. Blush.

Tomorrow I will be cleaning.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 20:24

I am fasting tomorrow Bssh.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 22/12/2013 20:45

Bssh, Toffee I'm FDing tomorrow too.
Good luck to us all on resisting the temptations everywhere.
I just succumbed to a Lindt milk chocolate bar, tut.
