Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

TIP. Sild I karry, gravlax sovs etc. and skagen seafood salad.

Various scandi condiments like remoulade, special hot dog mustard etc.

Marzipan from Denmark. Danish cheese.

And best of ground cardemom. It's impossible to get hold of elsewhere and every Danish Xmas baking recipe requires it. And grinding your own from pods is a mare.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 20/12/2013 19:35

So Ive finished my day of eating now.

As I bought cake, Ive also eaten cake so way too many calories, however Ive still stuck to 16:8 and only had 2 meals. Tomorrow I wont be able to stick to 16:8 as its the 1st birthday at my local Parkrun so there will be cake and I will be having a little nibble. That will be before 10 so I will be too early to have a 16:8, but it is Saturday so I'll let myself have that day off (I am exercising quite a bit anyway with Parkrun and I will take the dog for a longer walk too). I am going to have a mini fast on Sunday though and stick to 1000 calories or less. I might have one Monday too - Am I allowed to have mini fasts 2 days in a row?

Envy at MrsF being able to just pop into London when bored. I used to work for a national train company and got free train travel. Me and DH were always getting the train to London. We often did our christmas shopping there. I miss London. My neighbour is taking her DD to London tomorrow Im Envy at her too. I must go back.

Hope everyone is managing to relax and having a good evening.

Hope you've heard from your family eatriskier and your DF is doing much better.

BTW thanks for that link re measurements Betsy I will measure tomorrow and report back.

pandarific · 20/12/2013 19:50

I'm struggling. Eaten all my calories for today and am now really wistfully aware of the mince pies, artisan crisps, cheeeeeeese in the next room.

No. NO. I'm not that hungry, I just want to eat the delicious food. And I will be glad I did it tomorrow. strong

BsshBossh · 20/12/2013 20:02

panda remind yourself you can have it tomorrow.

peplum41 · 20/12/2013 20:06

Just blasted 200 cals on exercise bike at gym. Don't usually manage much on FD, but found that reading this thread whilst peddling makes it fly by. I know bcf has probably just dropped a hunk in horror. Just doing thighs. In your face peplum belly!

Hugs to eats, who always manages to put a humorous spin on a wee disaster. Hope df is well soon.

talkin what's the deal with this spare cat of yours. Always happy to talk cat.

pandarific · 20/12/2013 20:32

Yup - tomorrow!

BetsyJingleBells · 20/12/2013 21:08

I'm very excited - I've just found a new thing for January. I've jsut signed up for a taekwondo class just for women run by someone who sounds (via email) exactly like our beloved bigchoc!

Never done martial arts but always fancied it and this is run locally which means I've got no excuse not to get motivated on a dark winter's evening.

I also just 'invented' a cointreau and prosecco cocktail which in no way has had any impact whatsoever on my good mood right now Grin

Coming out the other side of my hideous hangover, thank God! I am officially on my holidays yahXmas Grin
Don't know about you guys are but it's like the end of the world weather wise here, torrential rain, gale force winds, a nice for fire and hair of the dog wine. Didn't do too bad in the food front considering the state I've been in but taking advice from earlier, I kept v busy and as a result had 2 lovely family visits, although I forgot to share my chocolatesXmas Blush
5 more sleeps!!!!

Not2bObvious · 20/12/2013 21:20

Betsy well Jel about the tae Keon do, I would frickin love that! I get stupidly excited doing Davina's kickboxing, it's my fav aerobic activity!! And I am living the sound of your Cointreau drinky, I think I would christen that a Cointreau'y Mary/Merry (depends on your accent)

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 20/12/2013 21:21

Betsy That Taekwondo sounds really exciting. I fancy doing one of those bootcamp programs, but they are too expensive for me. You've inspired me to have a look around to see if there's something similar in my area on a night (about 8ish would be ideal)

TheRaniOfYawn · 20/12/2013 21:32

Taekwondo sounds great. I did it for a while in my early twenties and it was good fin.have promised myself capoiera classes as a reward for when I get my BMI down to 25.

wildwater · 20/12/2013 21:43

hola todos Smile

I'm doing a proper fast today. Myself & LL mostly do a 24 hr fast twice a week, then have a small meal. I have wandered off the track a little lately, although I seem to be losing weight still anyway. The weather is becoming very hot here - 36 degrees the last few days - and that combined with my new attitude towards food means fairly random South American-style eating.

I had 'cheated' by eating various things with friends on fast days when away from LL! (Empanadas. Icecream.) Today I am 'clean' but haven't done my usual 24 hours without food. At about 2.30pm I ate a raw carrot and half a Granny Smith apple. Later tonight we are having tuna pie with tomato and onion, and salad.

Wishing you all the calmest and most serene Christmas possible Grin

MrsFlorrick · 20/12/2013 21:57

Evening all.

Presents all wrapped. I've just hit the mulled wine. Grin

H is annoyed. The smell of the mulled stuff offends him Hmm

I'm also tucking into a bunch of bhalzen biscuits. Damn they are good!!!

I LoF from 5:30pm last night until 6pm tonight. So far I've had some Waitrose cheese bites (again) and some biscuits and the mulled wine.

It could have been another full FD but I've headed down the road of Christmas biscuits and mulled stuff. More cheese is called for.... Grin

Bigchoc. Are you on a frenzy tonight too??

Bootcamp sounds great Betsy. I need some bootcamp in my life. Grin

somewherebecomingrain · 20/12/2013 21:57

Fast day went well but after dp phoned up and threatened a drunk invasion I Caved and ate a slice of low carb-ish blueberry and apple cake.

Let me tell you the story of this cake.

Have given up on sugar substitutes - just used smaller amounts of sugar, and brown rice syrup which is pure glucose therefore better according to Lustig, he of the fructose-is-bad lecture.

The low carbness was all in the flour - ground almond, coconut and soya.

And did not stint on the fat. 250 g butter/coconut oil.

Anyway, one slice and boom - full!

Plus, it was delicious.

Sorry to me, me, me.

ELR · 20/12/2013 21:59

mrsF been trying to get hold of ground cardamom for ages as so sick of grinding my own! Totally forgot about the scandi kitchen? Do you like those crispy onions you can get to put on those lovely sausage/hotdogs?

MrsFlorrick · 20/12/2013 22:09

ELR. Yep. I get the onions. Lots of 'em. And they still have plenty of ground cardamom in stock.

hopefulgum · 20/12/2013 22:56

Wow, so much happens on this thread I can hardly keep up. I feel a bit like a "blow-in" as you all seem to know each other so well. I do hope it is okay to join in.

Well, after my two FD's I let it rip a bit with food yesterday. Bloody hell! It was our last day of work before the long summer break. Thank god it is now holidays. I am so exhausted!

Anyway, the first thing I did when I got into work was make a cup of tea and crack open the Lindt Christmas bells (wish I hadn't!), then there was a special morning tea (they got a gluten-free orange cake in especially for me as I can't eat the normal Christmas fare. The fruit cake looked lovely...sigh...). Then there was a special end of year curry lunch, then I came home, and though not at all hungry, ate an ice-cream (which to be honest, I didn't enjoy at all), and to top it off, after eating dinner, DH and I polished off a small box of chocs while watching a movie!

I actually didn't enjoy all the sweet stuff and wonder why I kept eating it? I know I eat when I am tired. It's a stupid reflex I have cultivated over the years, from the misguided belief that if I am tired I need energy. Of course, what I really need is rest/sleep, but my mind tells me otherwise. This is something I really need to reset. I was also pre-menstrual, felt pretty flat and sad yesterday, so that didn't help.

I feel much, much better this morning, as AF turned up (after leading me astray for a couple of days, making me think that maybe I was pregnant-been ttc for about 4 and a half years, but almost ready to give up).

I am finding that I am actually looking forward to the next fast day. It is almost like a "cleansing". I know that after the crazy Christmas indulgences I will get back on track to a healthy diet on my NFD's which I think will help with weight loss.

eatriskier, sorry to hear that your DF is ill and that the witches coven are being so nasty. I can totally relate, although it isn't my sister who is a witch, it is my mother. But that's a whole other story!

It is Saturday morning here so I am off to the farmer's market for some lovely fresh strawberries and cherries for Christmas lunch, then a lovely long swim before coming home to tackle the big clean up in preparation for Christmas. Xmas Grin

hopefulgum · 20/12/2013 22:56

somewherebecomingrain, that cake sounds very nice. Recipe???

BetsyJingleBells · 20/12/2013 23:10

hopefulgum last day of school here too and i got given a fair bit of chocolate of which I've eaten too much and haven't actually enjoyed. It was like I was trying to recapture when that would have been enjoyable or something. And yes, I'm absolutely exhausted too so I'm guessing that had a lot to do with it. I don't usually have that stuff in the house.

Oh and don't be shy about joining in, we are just a chatty bunch and everyone's welcome! Grin

BsshBossh · 20/12/2013 23:11

ground cardamoms - most Indian stores sell it. We get ours from Turnpike Lane.

BsshBossh · 20/12/2013 23:15

Ground cardamom goes very well in a rich, spicy lamb curry too.

MrsFlorrick · 20/12/2013 23:17

Bssh. Oooh. Excellent. I did try three local Indian shops here before my Xmas baking began but they don't stock.

When I lived up your way in Islington our local corner shop stocked massive bags of it.

Perhaps if I went to Crystal Palace or ventured to Croydon I may find a more "authentic" Indian shop than Beckenham Grin

MrsFlorrick · 20/12/2013 23:18

Bssh. Any recipes in the curry department you care to share?? Pleaaaaaase.

Massive curry fans in this house so anything you know will be much appreciated. Grin

Papayasoup · 20/12/2013 23:28

I've not managed any fasts this week but did do 16:8 most days. Between my birthday, a cold and Christmas drinks it just didn't seem possible. Apart from Friday I've been good so actually still maintaining. Realistically I won't be back to fasting until January. We are off on holiday just after Christmas so I'll be eating normally but as we are mainly self-catering it won't be too excessive. Be interesting to see what the damage will be when I'm back.

I have to admit that I'm glad Christmas madness will be limited. We aren't going home, I can't face the jetlag again and the flights are all so expensive. I prefer to go home over summer. This is also our opportunity to have a holiday just the 3 of us which I am really looking forward to. DD is exhausted as am I having had a lot of work travel since September. We are all ready for a break from the daily grind! And I love a cheeky summer holiday in winter Xmas Grin!

Sorry an epic me, me, me post! Well done all the looser, plateau busters this week and fasting despite the start of Christmas craziness! It also sounds like at DCs are ready for their holidays!
