Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

OMG OMG OMG why did no one tell me before? I am having my first ever cup of Bovril since I was a child. It is so nice! I am fasting - just accidentally had 2 olives, a mini fancy cheese thing and a piece of chicken - and I am cold and Bovril is going to be my saviour I think on hard days. I am not beating myself up about the mini eats as I am the same weight as I was 2 weeks ago and the lowest I have been since having dc3. Does anyone know the calories in a Bovril or how many are allowed in a FD when you want to have dinner? Also, DS2 just had a taste and loved it. Is it okay for kids to have? (I am so fussy about their diet.)

ChristmasPudding6 · 20/12/2013 13:17

Never tried bovril. I always think it looks like it will taste like marmite. I'm intrigued now.

BsshBossh · 20/12/2013 13:25

Toffee how many teaspoons are you using per mug?

Well, I can well and truly say I'm over custard creams and bourbon biscuits. Interesting lunch, I must say (I'd skipped breakfast for this strange very temporary biscuit craving) Hmm

somewherebecomingrain · 20/12/2013 13:54

So I'm down but not out. Having one of those easy peasy fasts you get after skipping a few.

Not proper 5:2 but it feels good and right. I sort of know i will make it.

Hugs to all.

somewherebecomingrain · 20/12/2013 13:57

Hugs eatriskier so sorry xxx hope fd rallies and members grow up xx

somewherebecomingrain · 20/12/2013 13:58

Family members I mean

somewherebecomingrain · 20/12/2013 13:59

Sorry DF. Spell check made it fd xx

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 20/12/2013 14:11

Thanks all. After my whinge on here and to a few RL friends I've calmed down a bit. Obviously DF was over the worst when he had a go at DM this morning! Not sure if he is still in HDU though, but DM has promised to phone the house tonight and let me or DH know what's going on. Though DF is able to text (unlike DM who really doesn't do technology) and I'm guessing his silence means he is probably still morphined to the max and he will likely let me know when he is moved himself. Haven't told DM how angry I am yet, she has enough on her plate but as soon as DF is recovering decently I will. I'm not letting that witches coven alienate me any more than they've succeeded in doing already. But we were due to miss a birthday party so we could see my DPs and Aunt - original day changed to accommodate aunt. Beginning to wonder why my kids should miss out on the fun of a party for the sake of someone who doesn't have any common decency.

Didn't hit the chocolate though, and even better - I avoided the Wine (until later of course, then I'll hit it with a vengeance!)

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 20/12/2013 14:13

But in non crappy family and TMI related info, I've just survived a wee-mageddon. Not DD this time, she had managed to do everything in the potty. But decided to leave the gate open for DS who promptly picked the potty up covering himself and the bathroom floor in the rather quantify contents. That just made my day Xmas Hmm

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 20/12/2013 14:15

That's not meant to be quantify. Something meaning large in quantity was what I was after. Auto-correct and my addled brain have now conspired to make me not even understand myself.

MrsFlorrick · 20/12/2013 14:18

Bovril has 10cals per teaspoon which is circa what you use for a cup of the stuff.

It's beefy in taste like beef consommé not marmitey in the least.

Im normally not a fan of things like that but I really do rate cups of bovril on a FD particularly during LOF. So much more satisfying than tea coffee.

Eatriskier. Sorry to hear about your DF and family situation. Families can drive you insane. Mine are like a bad Ingmar Bergman effort. Proper Nordic Noir!! Wink

DH actually felt sorry for me with my bad cold last night and has taken day off work. And fair play he has looked after DC all day today. I had a massive lie in and a shower in peace. Feel reviewed despite the rivers of snot. Grin

MrsFlorrick · 20/12/2013 14:20

Oh eatriskier. ((((Hugs)))) wee-gate sounds awful!

My DS likes to remove clothing and nappy and then wee a small puddle on the floor and stamp in it Hmm. I blame Peppa Pig!!!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/12/2013 15:32

Bssh - 1 teaspoon.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/12/2013 15:37

My laptop is on a go slow so missed all about pee antics. Oh dear. I don't miss the potty days though tbh we only had it for a few days as I moved them on to the loo PDQ so the toilet didn't become a big scary thing.

BsshBossh · 20/12/2013 15:43

Hugs to you eatriskier and to your DF of course.
Hurrah to MrF!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/12/2013 16:03

I am not joining in with the hurrahing for MrF. Least he can do after all the previous actions.

Hope you feel better soon MrsF.

TalkinPeace · 20/12/2013 16:12

(((( eatriskier ))))
family politics are awful aren't they.
We are not seeing ANY family over Christmas.
DH has none other than his unspeakable brother
the bits of mine that I like are coming for lunch afterwards
we have best friends coming for New Year
and hopefully I'll see my Dad next summer

my house smells of baking pastry as we have people coming round later
and my extra cat is slowly starting to come to life
so life is OK
then again teenagers with smartphones and wifi are very peaceful things

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 20/12/2013 16:17

Just had the mother of all tantrum here. DD1 has got a birthday present off her best friend which she opened at school. Its one of those crafty things with lots and lots of little pieces. Of course she wants to play with it now and of course Id rather it was a time when we had a more time so have said no. So now she is not coming down for her tea and we will never see her again Hmm She's 5 going on 16. I think we've missed 10 years somewhere. Its only going to get worse isn't it?

Glad your DH is doing something right MrsF

We have the potty training to come in 2014. DD2 is 2 so going to attempt it in summer. The joys.

I feel so full today and not eaten much. I went out shopping to 3 shops this morning so didn't get back till lunch and was really hungry by the time I finally sat down for my sandwich. Now Im just bloated even though I finished my lunch by over 3 hours ago.

Good news is that Ive wrapped up all the presents so that's one less job to do. Now I fancy wine as I feel that Christmas is beginning. Though will hold off as I never drink on a Friday and dont like drinking alone (DH doesn't drink much either - we tend to have a few on a Saturday)

BetsyJingleBells · 20/12/2013 16:31

I hit the staffroom snacks today. Enjoyable at the time but now have a raging headache. Sugar really isn't my friend.

Hugs to eats for family shite and pissaggedon.

Get well soon MrsF - although do milk it if it's getting some results with mrF Grin

I have some stock cooking, reminds me of childhood Christmasses :)

MrsFlorrick
I see woman flu lasting, ooh, until June Xmas Wink

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/12/2013 16:48

Kids not happy that I wanted to stop at Asda on the way back from getting DS1 from school. I didn't give in as I am sick of having to go out twice as much just so they don't have to cope with the hardship that is a food shop. I get the third degree as to which shop it is and if it is a big shop. All happy to eat the food and quick to moan if something they want isn't in Hmm. DS1 even made comments about how much was in my basket when it was supposed to be a small shop.

The point of ^ was I picked up ready meals for DH and I as I wanted a night off from cooking and I could see the calorie total. Haven't had a ready meal for ages.

And the cats are fighting again.

DH home - yay!

BsshBossh · 20/12/2013 17:08

Toffee what ready meals did you buy?

MrsFlorrick · 20/12/2013 17:09

I got bore this afternoon. Got up and went into central London to the Scandinavian Kitchen in Great Titchfield st to stock up on a few Xmas foods from home (that nobody else likes Wink).

So now en route home laden with goodies.

I though DH might be annoyed as he had taken tge day off but he didn't bat an eye lid.

I honestly wasn't really well enough to go but its last chance before Xmas.

TIP woman flu till June GrinGrin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/12/2013 17:53

Bssh - I got DH sweet and sour chicken and mine was a vegetable ratatouille type meal. It was very nice but I will have to try hard not to eat again.

MrsF - he shouldn't bat an eyelid. He has been a twat lately but even without that you should be able to go out while he looks after his own children.

TalkinPeace · 20/12/2013 17:56
