Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Miscalculated: up by 0.6 lbs! A gain but a minor gain. Grin.

Not2bObvious · 20/12/2013 07:46

Bssh I wouldn't even bother registering .6, sure that's just a poo or a decent wee! I'm scared to step on my scales after my night out. It's safe to say I am a tad delicate this morning, sinuses are bunged up and my heads thumping but delighted with myself that I kept away from the cigarettes which is a victory. As a reformed ex smoker, I'd gotten into a nasty smoke while on the p* habit. My dh hates smoking (as do I when I'm sober) so I'd then spend the next 12 hours trying to hide the fact I looked/smelled/spoke like Bet Lynch!
Oh gooooodddddddd how am I supposed to work this morning!!!

ChristmasPudding6 · 20/12/2013 08:10

Not2 hope your recovery is swift and above all hope you had a good night.

My kids seems to have started off the morning where we left off last night. Why I am already shouting at 8am!!?!?? Must dig out my Kalms. Turkey I think you are right. There must be something in the air. Above all I think they are fed up of waiting for the elusive presents that Santa will eventually bring. 3 1/2 weeks is a long time to a child from start of advent calendars to the big day.

I had thought of blocking all chimneys so FC couldn't get in but I like the broken glass on roof top more!!! Our elf on the shelf has already been AWOL for 2 days this month before I made DC write an apology note for being horrid to each other (at least it incorporated hand writing practise which I was secretly proud of).

Right must face the music. It sounds like they might actually be getting on again. Downside is that when they get on, they tend to be doing something they shouldn't!!!

ChristmasPudding6 · 20/12/2013 08:12

Bssh I've also gain 0.6 ish this week but I can feel its prob sitting in my bowels!!! I'm sure it'll shift later.
As long as I can still be this weight in 2 weeks time it'll be a victory.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 20/12/2013 08:14

...... NOT2BE... Congratulations on the not smoking!!! Hope you feel better soon. Brew Xmas Grin at least it's Friday! Next name change should be NotBetLynch in honour of overcoming one of the hardest challenges for ex smoker!

Bssh Xmas Sad oh! .......then Xmas Grin phew!! Have another mince pie luv!

Peplum it is funny how we create these mental pictures of each other isn't it!

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 20/12/2013 08:15

Good night then Not2b Grin Hope the hangover lifts soon. I always find hangovers clear quicker if I am busy, its when I slob out due to a hangover it hangs around. Good luck with work.

So I want a bikini body by summer. I go on holiday on 2nd June so by then. Im thinking of Planks in Jan to start off. I still go out running and the 5:2 should see me to a good start.

Still excited about my NSV last night. I know its only water so its not like I managed to fit into a size 12 jeans or anything (my aim), but its definately a step in the right direction.

peplum I always assume everyone is female on here, but I just assume that everyone is like me. Early to mid 30's with DCs, but of course that's not true. Infact its bizarre to me that there are real people on the other side of the messages Im reading Hmm

With all the messages last night, my questions got missed so I hope no-one minds if I ask again. I want to measure myself, but Im not sure exactly where to measure. So basically what do I measure?

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 20/12/2013 08:18

ChristmasPud apparently there is an app where you can get FC to phone your child! They say their name and everything! Tempting!!

Just get fed up of being fed up with them, don't you!

BetsyJingleBells · 20/12/2013 08:34

Biscuits Measure your waist (at narrowest point), hips (at widest point so includes your bum), chest, arms, thighs, neck. Can also do wrists, ankles and where ever you like. this is useful

The waist to hip ratio measurements are narrowest point and widest point.

Just have to say to those struggling with recalcitrant/argumentative/ungrateful children...I have 30 of them to deal with!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/12/2013 08:55

Morning all!

I have no idea why but I decided to weigh myself today.

06.12.13 - 11 stone 3lbs.
About 3 days ago I was 11 stone 5lbs.
Today 11 stone 3.2lbs.

Fasted Monday and have eaten since but not calorie counted and not stuffed my face more than some chocolate on Tuesday (medicinal) and about 6 squares yesterday.

I am thinking the weigh ins prove that one day of going over does not equal weight on but I can't quite get my head around what is going on. There doesn't seem to be a constant rhyme or reason to what happens when I fast properly and when I have days of not fasting properly or eating the right amount n TDEE.

11 stone 2lbs is the top end of my normal weight range. Bottom end appears to be about 8 stone 12. That isn't going to be happening ever.

DS2 has discovered Moshi Monsters are on at the cinema. DD will not want to go so I have given DH the wonderful news that he will be taking DS2! Grin.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/12/2013 08:59

Shock southeastdweller is a boy?!?!?!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 20/12/2013 09:32

talking of recalcitrant kids, I have two adult ones that have me in tears at mo. they're my sister and aunt. my df had an op yesterday and lost a lot if blood, it took hours to stabilise him and he is in high dependency at the moment. I know this because my df texted me and realised yet again no one had told me one of my parents were seriously ill. my dm could only manage a quick call to my aunt. my aunt and sister love to play divide and conquer games, and a seriously ill family member is the perfect breeding ground. aunt called sister. both decided not to let me know. df went ape at dm this morning (somewhat unfairly as she didn't realise I hadn't been contacted again).

cycling between sadness and extreme anger.

ELR · 20/12/2013 09:51

eastskyThanks
toffee Xmas Grin at delivery ing that news to your husband! ha ha!

ELR · 20/12/2013 09:55

First day if the holidays for me and already kids are driving me mad. Dd has spent the last 30mins dancing around with a tambourine!!! And ds has just tried to kill her as she has broken one of his houses on Minecraft.
And the delightful man i call Dh has gone back to bed!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/12/2013 09:58

Eatriskier - I am sorry your father is ill and some family members are behaving abominably.

ELR - Hmm Get your H up fgs. Cheeky bugger.

ELR · 20/12/2013 10:02

For anyone that's interested I've posted a picture of the afternoon tea I took dd to yesterday. It's a bit small sorry.

ChristmasPudding6 · 20/12/2013 10:07

((((Eat)))) best wishes winging their way to you. I hope DF is well again soon.

Can't believe ur aunt and sister behaved like that!!! Angry

ELR · 20/12/2013 10:09

Toffee I should really but haven't got the heart it's his first day off he's usual up and out by 8am every morning and first lie in for ages. We are going to cornwall tomorrow and he will be driving too, I may just be all sergeant major in a bit though as will need to start packing.
bssh that is hardly a gain really! Was it you that posted the kind of recipe for prawn and spinach curry sometime in the summer? If so I'm having it for tea tonight it's become a FD and NFD fave for me.

ChristmasPudding6 · 20/12/2013 10:09

ELR. Mmmmm. Thankfully it's NFD for me today. Not that my kitchen cupboards contain anything near as delightful. (Sainburys here I come)

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 20/12/2013 10:28

eat so sorry about your df and you not knowing. Hope things improve soon.

So here I am in morrisons and bought cake, 3 cakes to be exact. Though one is DD1s birthday cake as she is 6 on Christmas day. Now I'll gave to eat some cake I shall try not to overdo it though. My own fault, it looked too nice

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/12/2013 10:29

ELR - good call then and tbh I would do the same with my DH. Often I am up at 7 on a Sat/Sun as I can't sleep once I think of the things I want to do but then once he is up he will do anything I ask. Moshi Monsters There They GO!!! Grin.

FD for me. Think I will be okay. Reminding myself no gain this week even though I had chocolate twice so next week my aim is to be 11 stone 2lbs. If I can do that I won't be overweight any more. So pleased not to be obese anymore. It was such a shock when I saw I was and I was in denial tbh as I was so ashamed.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 20/12/2013 10:41

Before I slope off to another Xmas lunch and then a late Xmas dinner out ….

Flowers Flowers Flowers

To all MN mums !!!

I‘ve been reading the horrendous experiences some of you have suffered: health consequences, gest. diabetes, ailnets I've never heard of, scars ……

And don‘t forget the following 20 years of childcare.

Society in general and some of your DHs/DPs in particular just don‘t give you the esteem and status you deserve.

!! You are all flipping heroes !!

Flowers Flowers Flowers

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 20/12/2013 10:41

Eat - know you'll prefer this Wine to this Thanks

So... Wine Wine Wine Wine Wine Wine Wine

F*%#ing families eh! Sorry you are on recieving end of a couple of bitches playing games, when it involves something as serious as your father being ill.

Like to think what goes around, comes around, but unfortunately it never seems to with certain arsewipes of the world!

Hope he gets better soon, and you don't get any further upsets. X

Always Christmas time too isn't it!!

Goodwill and all that! Hmm

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 20/12/2013 10:43

(((((( BigChoc )))))))

Go forth and frenzy my dear!! Cake Xmas Grin x

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 20/12/2013 10:50

Oh and back to scars!
I forgot to mention the bit where in my numb and exhausted from the trauma after 2 days of no sleep (but remember it isn't proper labour yet! Xmas Angry ), a head - other than my freshly born dd - popped up from between my stirruped legs and said " is it ok if I do your stitches, I have to tell you that this would be my first, do you mind???" And me in my delirious state said, and I quote... "Fill your boots!"

Anyone got a time machine?..........
